Noooo! Not Shovey the shovel!

Thank you kindly for the assessment. I am not surprised I am somewhat off on the build. Since I jumped into the game in a rush to replace Hugo way back when, I used his template for a build and never really stopped to review the stats in detail; just built off of them.

I will sit down and make the changes soon. Thanks again!

Dark Archive

Ah, did not catch that you had put three levels of FC into hp instead of skills; that would explain the three skill points off. Most characters I know pick the same choice every level, so I just assumed, sorry, my goof. :)

As for hp, RGM instructed us a few pages back to use the PFS method (1/2HD+1) (April 6th, page 27 of this thread), hence my assessment. Given what I now know about your FC choices, that should put you at 30hp total.

And I concur that it would be folly to rely simply on the programs, full of flaws as they are. For instance, in setting up Madeline's profile I was temporarily stymied by the fact that HeroLab apparently does not allow for making special ammunition in stacks of less than 50, and even when manually input that most of the stack has been "used" it still indicates that weight as if all 50 were there! Eventually just used a custom "quiver" item and set the weight to indicate the actual number of arrows. Digression aside, the point is that I use the program for number-crunching, but then transpose the stats by hand instead of just dumping them so that I can catch idiosyncrasies such as that one.

Madeline, did you see my request for an email? Assuming you wanted the formatting as I posted.

And Valen, maybe if Shovey was a Battle-Shovel (been playing the Penny Arcade CRPGs in which your main character uses a rake and a hoe as weapons...) :P

According to Hero Lab, your skills (as best as I could guess where you put your points) should look as follows before Armor Check Penalty or Encumbrance Pentalty (Skill Name +total bonus(ranks)): Acrobatics +0(0), Appraise +2(0), Bluff +2(0), Climb +0(0), Diplomacy +7(2), Disguise +2(0), Escape Artist +0(0), Fly +0(0), Heal +9(2), Intimidate +2(0), K(arcana)+6(1), K(dungeoneering) +6(1), K(engineering) +6(1), K(geography) +6(1), K(history) +6(1), K(local) +7(2), K(nature) +6(1), K(planes) +6(1), K(religion) +8(3), Perception +7(1), Prof(gravedigger) +8(1), Ride +0(0), Sense Motive +8(1), Spellcraft +9(1), Stealth +0(0), Survival +4(0), Swim +0(0)

Question for clarification, did Hero Lab take into account that since I have the Knowledge Domain, that all Knowledge Skills are class skills?

Also - looks like I am off on KN:Geography; KN:Dungeoneering; KN:Nature; and KN: Planes. Did it include any change on KN: Nobility - which I had listed as well?

Thanks for any help on the matter.

As for the battle-shovel, loved that about PA. I am more reminded of Myth: The Fallen Lords, where the Gravediggers use their shovels as weapons and it turns out they are nigh-immortal members of the Emperors' Royal Guard.

Dark Archive

It did indeed take that into account. Hence any knowledge you put a rank into became 1rank+3class+2Int=6, not the 5 you had previously. Er... guess I forgot K(nobility), but I did spend all your points, which means if you want that one you'll have to move a rank from elsewhere. (Note that while the Knowledge domain makes them all class skills, they are still trained-only, and you still only get the class skill bonus if you have at least one rank in them. Hence your knowledge skills go straigt from unusable to +6 with one rank.)

Never played Myth, might have to look into it.

OK - thanks for the clarification. You are a true scholar! ;-)

As for Myth - it's software/graphics is dated now and it depends on how much you like squad-based tactics in a fantasy game, but the game's lore is quite good. Plus every "episode" of the game's story starts with an interesting intros like this.

OK - have updated. Use the two additional points to increase Con score to 13 - which should now give me a +1 on HP and Fort rolls. With the extra 4 I was under (19 to 23), then adding Con bonus that should take me up an additional 4 (23 to 27). Sound right?

Equipment/Stuff Update. Please note I have tried to compile everything that was found during the course of the adventure. This includes anything on my character sheet, which I will be revising for the level change. Anything that was expended - potions, scrolls, etc. - is not included on this list. Also - anything Creel has/had is not included at this point. As always - please advise if there's anything I missed.

Alexa: (3) Sunrods; (2) Bottles of Oil, Tindertwig, (5) Torches; Potion of Cure Light Wounds; (2) Potion of Cure Moderate Wounds; Potion of Lesser Restoration; Rope of Climbing; Stone of Alarm

Madeline/Smith: (3) Sunrods; Hide from Undead Scroll; (2) Holy Water Vials; All Magic Arrows + Bow ((12) Silver Tipped Arrows; (9) Arrows +1; (5) Ghost Touch Arrows +1; (2) Undead Bane Arrows +1); (2) Bottles of Oil; Tindertwig; (5) Torches; Potion of Lesser Restoration; (2) Potion of Cure Moderate Wounds; Potion of Cure Light Wounds; Masterwork Heavy Crossbow; (10) Bolts +1

Vaghn: (3) Sunrods; Hide from Undead Scroll; (2) Holy Water Vial; (2) Bottles of Oil; Tindertwig; (5) Torches; Potion of Lesser Restoration; Potion of Cure Moderate Wounds; Wand of Hold Person; Moldy Spellbook - Not Identified; Smith's Hammer - Not Identified?

Valen: (2) Sunrod; (2) Bottles of Oil, Tindertwig; (6) Torches; Potion of Lesser Restoration; +1 Heavy Mace; Wand of Cure Light Wounds (7 Charges); (1) Healing Kit; (2) Potion of Cure Moderate Wounds; (2) Potion of Remove Disease; Wand of Lesser Restoration (Charges ??)

Misc/Unclaimed so far: Ring of Keys; (1) Broken Heavy Masterwork Crossbow; 120GP + 500GP - Common Fund?; Axe (masterwork?) from headless skeleton; Leather Satchel. Set of masterwork thieves’ tools; Bronze war medallion from the Shining Crusade, Unframed Taldan painting of Stavian I; Set of a noblewoman’s silver hair clips; Masterwork punching dagger; Pouch containing a dozen masterwork shurikens; Masterwork silver war razor; (6) Suits of Masterwork Chainmail; (6) Suits of Masterwork Studded Leather Armor; (5) Masterwork Longswords; (4) Masterwork Heavy Maces; (120) Crossbow Bolts; Keen Longsword +1; Mithral Dagger +1; Ring of Protection +1

Magical but questionable: Blood-stained Handaxe +1; Collection of holy symbols; Tarnished Silver Flute

For Valen, a suit of the Chainmail is on the list, but otherwise the rest we can discuss. The longsword or dagger isn't my specialty, but seems a waste to sell them.

HP: 28 / 28, Init:+3, Perc:+7,AC:16,Fort:+3,Ref:+4,Will:+3

Now that we've succeeded with the prison. (We have finished this part of the adventure path, yes?) I am quite happy to put the magic bow/arrows and such back into the 'Group party' pool and work out who can use said items better than Madeline or Smith.

Also, I now have access to Hero Lab! (^_^) *Dos little happy dance*

With which I shall poke about and learn such so as to put Madeline and Smith up to 5th level.

Has master Creel sadly left us? Should we seek another member to help our explorations?

Again, congratulations to all and best wishes.

Vaghn will take a suit of mw studded leather. Either Vaghn or Madeline can use the longsword, and anyone will find the dagger handy if we run into something that requires magic/silver weapons. I also seem to recall a magic handaxe with a bonus against headless creatures? Probably too specific to come up often, but hey, magic weapon is magic. I believe only Madeline has the proficiency for that one.

Yep - it's currently under the 'magic but questionable' category, since nobody took it and it was one of the 5 major ghosts' item.

We can probably have the local clerics consecrate it or something. Either way, if it is magic and we are not using it, I say sell it.

All - First, thank you for participating. It's hard to believe this little book has taken us 2 years, 7 months to complete, but we did it. That's more than I think a lot of people can say, especially when it comes to PbP campaigns and adventures - which strike me as fickle things that rarely see it to the end. So, my hat goes off to each of you. You stayed the course and made it!

Given our current rate, however, it is going to take us a long time to complete this AP - approximately 13 years at our current rate. I don't think any of us can dedicate that sort of time, not with any degree of honesty, at least.

That said, you've a lot of gold and treasure, not to mention time spent with these characters. I'd hate to just call it quits if you're all still very much committed. So, I think a serious discussion is in order. Do you proceed to town? Do we retire the AP and move on? Do we push forward and hope for better time? Where do YOU want this to go?

Personally, I like this AP and I'd be happy to continue to run it. If I did, however, I think we'd need to make a few changes, minor tweaks to improve response times and to ensure things go smoothly. Essentially, I'd be assigning each player "table tasks" to make running the rest of the adventure go smoothly. We might also skip ahead at points to save time, too. So, keep that in mind.

Conversely, I'd also be happy to run something set in my world, Rhune: Dawn of Twilight (don't mind the website, I plan to move it over to my company site next year). I'm obviously biased toward the latter and am writing an adventure that will release by the end of the year that I think this group might like. Obviously, you'd get sneak peaks at some of our material, but that's probably not so bad. I would, of course, need to make the maps private, so we'd need to move off of public photo sharing and I'd need to create a private, view-only library of images, as well. There may be other artistic restrictions, as well, stuff I haven't thought of yet - so be mindful of that, too.

In either case, I'd be happy to run something, whether we continue on here or move onto something else. If we do explore the latter, character creation will be a little more detailed, but also more cooperative. I'd also be inviting a friend (maybe two) to join us, as well.

So yeah, just some stuff to think about. If we do continue this campaign, I'd like each of you to think about your "end goals." What would you like to see come to pass to call this campaign a success? Would you want to run through all the books? Or do you have personal goals in mind that, once met, would suffice?

Just some things to think about.

Cheers,
Jaye

Female Human (Varisian(Ustalav)) Druid(Menhir Savant)/4 - Monk/1 HP: 33/36; AC16, T15, FF15; F+7,R+5,W+11; Per +13; Init +3

I am good either way. I really like Alexa and would love to keep going with this. As far as the 31 months goes, really, the first year, before Valen and I joined, was a rotation of characters adding and dropping. As you know, even the original DM dropped. When we joined, I am not sure how much had actually been done, other then one or two attacks by werewolves and a little chatting with the townsfolk.

I think that we can keep going. If you know of someone that is a good player and can consistently post, then it would be great to bring them in. One problem with this campaign is that we are very melee lacking. The main frontline fighter is a druid with 14 Strength, 12 Con and 12 Dex. Heck, with my Wisdom, it would probably be better to take a 1 level dip into Monk to get the +5 to AC and some nice saving throw bumps.

As far as the Rhune campaign goes, I know little of it. I have briefly checked your pages in the past and it appears to be well put together. If it is just the artwork that you are concerned about, one option is to make a google documents account and only allow access to those you grant it to. This is what I do with my Temple of Elemental Evil that I am running since I have no clue what is or is not copyrighted on that any more. By restricting access, I am not legally publishing it. You concern, I assume, is not a copyright issue since you should own the copyright, but rather theft of the work.

So far, I have enjoyed your style. You have generally been very diligent with your posting and add enough color and your own changes to make the dungeon fun (in that cold dark undead way). At the same time, you rarely make massive posts which makes the game easier to follow. I am a culprit of sometime making posts that are way too long, so I know what I am talking about.

In the end, I am good either way. I like your style and want to stick with it. If we continue with the four characters we have, we need a little clearer rules on how long we wait before someone else posts for a character. Also, as you have said, sometimes in these APs, things that are fun on a tabletop can become long and drawn out, especially if it is a task or event in which only one or two players are involved. I have no problem if you were to use narrative to expedite things like this.

Alexa,

Thank you for your input. I think I can bring someone onboard for a melee character, as I know one person who wants to play in my setting again, but who would also probably play in this AP, as well. Let's see where this goes...

Depending on what you allow, the only change for Alexa is that I might consider changing her Nature Bond. I have the Eagle Domain, which seems cool, but so far has been completely useless other than giving me a nice boost to perception. Not sure what I would change to, animal companion or another domain, but I think that either would be better than what I have at this point.

My plan for Madeline is to eventually 'ride' a large eidolon into battle.

Though...that won't be till level nine or so.

I am sorry to be so slow at keeping the character. Now that I have access to Hero-Lab and am seeing other friends play Summoners I feel I'll have a better input into the game.

Madeline,

Assuming we continue, I'd recommend the following two things:

1) While knowing your character IS important, knowing the basics to the game is, as well. If you do have some free time, I'd look over the combat section of the Core Book, specifically at actions in combat (what you can and cannot do), as well as what actions provoke attacks of opportunity, and so on.

Don't be afraid to message me or the other players, either, as time permits. Or, alternately, use the OOC thread to ask technical questions about combat, spells, enemies, whatever. If you're in doubt, ask your fellow players. You'll learn the system better and build more table continuity here. Plus, we're all collectively invested in seeing more people playing smoothly, as it heightens the fun for all of us!!

:)

2) Before you post, read the entries preceding yours thoroughly. Over the last 2+ years, there have been multiple occasions where you've missed obvious things - both statements and questions, by both myself and the other players. It's given me, at times, the feeling that you're only partially interested in the actual campaign, that it is sort of an afterthought. While I'm sure this is not the case, taking just a little more time reviewing prior posts will probably remedy that appearance. Obviously, you've got a great character concept that you're invested in and we all know you're learning here (so there's no need to apologize); let's just step up our collective game this next go around, no matter what or how we proceed.

Cheers,
Jaye

Whew! Several thoughts on this one. The first is thank you for running this and sticking it/being patient with it. Alexa has already mentioned several of the concerns I noticed as a late-comer as well: the multiple changes in group players; the GM switch; I can only imagine what a mess at times. If we can keep our core group and add one or two more consistent players, then I could see us picking up the pace a little better.

One of the major things is combat - since it seemed like it could start and stop at times. I would say the map system worked well when brought into play. I would think we need to have a more rigid system in place; but I know that can also make it tough on posting responses. Maybe a set of guidelines or an action queue that gives some advanced actions in case someone can't post.

I am interested in this AP to continue, and I think that Valen is a character that fits well into that adventure. The question of a melee character addition crossed my mind, and I was considering giving Valen a level or two in fighter if not for his poor strength. Maybe specializing in bows instead to add more ranged damage?
Story-wise, given his simple origins - I think the goal would be to help feel like he's accomplished something - whether the story concludes as the full AP or some truncated version with a slightly less epic win. That aside, it's mostly to try and flesh him out in the story; maybe some kind of further experience related to the church of Pharasma, as I kind of pictured him as being an "unorthodox" cleric.

Rhune certainly looks interesting and I like some of the concepts as laid out in my cursory review of it. Probably, I would change to something different in terms of the style of cleric I would play, as I'm not sure the type of cleric Valen is would work.

On a personal note, I am glad to have finally finished any AP module like this. I have - as both player and GM - never finished one. Thank you for allowing me to join in as a "last-minute" addition and participate.

Dark Archive

Oh my. Well, let's see here. First and foremost, thanks and congratulations to all. I hardly knew what I was getting myself into when I petitioned to be part of an already ongoing PBP game; not surprising, since I've never played a PBP game at all other than this one. It has been a wonderful experience, albeit a bit rough at times with the frequent player dropouts. Still, I was just noticing, as I transferred bookmarks over to my new laptop last week, that the links for this game are right at the top. I'm sure that is a good sign. :) It has been a pleasure gaming with each and all of you, and a few others that I regret had to drop, and I most certainly would like to continue to do so.

In case it has not been obvious, I am more of the heavy RP type of gamer, and so I become personally invested in my characters and their story. Vaghn, that cheeky little chap, is far from finished with his story, so I very much would like to continue it. That would be my first choice.

On the other hand... Rhune seems like a really cool world, and I can think of all sorts of fun that could be had running around in it. So if the consensus is to go that way, I'll bid Vaghn a fond adieu and be happy to continue to play with new characters in a new setting. Of course, part of me cannot help but wonder if we couldn't handle both... >.>

I know I have not always kept up on the posts as well as I would have liked, whether it be due to illness, exams, or every once in a while actually something fun, and for that I do apologize. Still, to all of you, and especially you, Jason, for running things all this time and putting up with my occasional shenanigans, thank you. Games like this are why I love the hobby. Happy Gaming!

Let me look back at Alexa and see whether there is anything that can be played with to make the Eagle Domain feel like it is adding more value. I also like the owl, unfortunately it just seems like a piece of jewelry sitting on my shoulder which is used for color most of the time.

Perhaps messing with some of the spells would make it work. Since we have no ranged fighters, the Aspect of the Eagle has never been used.

Well all, it seems the consensus is to continue along with this AP, so let's move forward! And for the sake of brevity (and quite possibly, my sanity), let's do this:

1) I'm going to allow complete rebuilds of each of your characters, starting at 5th level. You may build these how you like (including changing classes), but I will require you keep at least one level in your original class (and honestly prefer you maintain your original classes, if possible). You'll have 10 days to do this, so take your time if you need to. But please get this done by the 24th.

2) If you anticipate a leave of absence, let us know. If something comes up, let us know. I'm going to also require each person to include a list of motivations and instincts for their character. Their motivations will help me determine their goals in the case of player absence. Their instincts will give me a clear line of execution for these motivations. Please use this character as an example. I want 3-5 "my character always does this..." to work with.

3) From here on out, I'm reverting to basic XP. Leveling according to the ABCD system works, but it requires a lot more work on everyone's end. So, put your characters at 1 XP above the minimum for 5th. And from here on out, I'm going to issue XP as normal, but for the whole group. I'm going to ask Alexa to track it.

4) Valen, you're covering gear. Consider yourself the party treasurer and equipment manager. I apologize. And you're welcome. ;)

5) Vaghn, you're the group's scribe. Please keep track of what the group has done, who they've interacted with, and so on - but for the group. You play the smart academic, this should be right up your alley.

6) Madeline, you're the trainee it appears, so I'm going to ask you to work with each of the other players to learn the characters, how and why they get their bonuses, and so on. I know you're super busy and the rolling shifts makes life difficult - that's why we're going to work together. Post when you can.

7) Let's post once a day if possible, twice if possible. If you cannot, I'll run your characters from your instincts. I will not ghost GM any PCs for more than a week, however. If things go quiet, I'll move on until you guys pick back up. So, politely police yourselves and I'll do my best to tell you a dark, dark game.

8) I'll use the combat maps to speed up combat and continue to post them.

9) I'm going to build code for posting your actions, too. I'm going to ask you to use this code for official, combat related stuff and will hopefully speed up combats. It's going to look something like this (after you remove the spaces):

[b ]This Round[/ b]
[b ]Standard action[/ b] - the thing I want to do.
[b ]Move action[/ b] - the thing I want to do.
[b ]other action[/ b] - swift, immediate, free actions.

[b ]Next Round[/ b]
[b ]Standard action[/ b] - the thing I want to do.
[b ]Move action[/ b] - the thing I want to do.
[b ]other action[/ b] - swift, immediate, free actions.
[b ]alternate action[/ b] - If X happens, I do this instead.

This should allow me to tell a better story by narrating your actions a little better.

10) I've invited my friend Beau to join us. I don't plan to invite anyone else. I'll work his character in at Ravengro, so go there and do things.

That's about it for now. Get to work on those characters! Chop chop! ;)

Cheers,
Jaye

Female Human (Varisian(Ustalav)) Druid(Menhir Savant)/4 - Monk/1 HP: 33/36; AC16, T15, FF15; F+7,R+5,W+11; Per +13; Init +3

Party on. I am sticking with druid. Might switch the domain slightly, but will keep the archetype. Let me think on it and I should have something done in a few days.

As a note, I will be out of town from 11/22 to 11/29. I should have access this entire time, but my posting will not be as frequent as usual due to spending time with my family and several long drives.
