Jordan feels slightly better after a night of sleep. Not well, yet, but some of the debilitating weakness has gone. Regain 1 point of Strength.

Shalelu smiles as Malcolm takes Jordan's meagre backpack, "Spider bites can be nasty and it's a good job you had friends with you. Couple of days rest and you'll be right as a spring day. Huh, I wonder what Ameiko wants. She always did have a taste for the theatrical." The elven ranger shakes her head in mock disapproval.

Edited to account for cross-post with Malcolm...

Spotting Malcolm carrying Jordans pack, Ruhk chuckles.
"You're lucky mate, you only need to carry the pack, I had to carry the wizard."

Well well, look who is with them...it's her...

Rommin gives the urchin two coppers comments "I'm feeling generous, so I'll double what Ameiko offered." Arriving outside the Rusty Dragon, he spots Malcolm, Jordan, Ruhk and Shalelu coming from the other direction, he forces a grim smile.

Shalelu. She gets to wander the lands without being chained here by a promise. As they get closer, Rommin hears the good natured joking amongst them and the forced smile becomes genuine. For a moment, the weight of responsibility lifts again and he holds the door open for the others.

The next day Azmythe looks for Koya. He wants to tell her of his latest adventure. He tells her of the goblins, the map found on the fan, the short trip to the cave, and of the encounter with the honorable servant Tsutami.

Also, at Enoch's insistance, he'll try to spend time with Jordan. Jordan will find him a rather distracted conversationalist. Enoch, however, is very much into the discussion.

Marduzi smiles as Malcolm, Jordan, Ruhk, Shalelu, and Rommin walk into the Rusty Dragon. He's just finishing a tasty breakfast of eggs and bacon spiced with some delicious Tien herb. On the table before him is a huge sack which he raises and then lets fall with the "ching" and "chunk" that only hundreds of coins could make.

If you all want to play out the scene with the sheriff, we can just retcon that last bit. I think we're probably all ready to move on with Ameiko.

Jordan regales Shalelu with the bluff on the rooftops with the goblin chief. He asks his sister, "After I charmed him with my spell, I was unsure how much the spell would influence his actions. What if I brought the goblin chief home following me like the puppy I brought back when I was twelve from the woods? Would I have been allowed to keep him?"

He also tells Shalelu, "Gooney also woke Malcolm up after he fell asleep." He affectionately pets his frog in his pouch.

Female Human (Varisian) Bard 2

Kelistra stayed in the Rusty Dragon after Ameiko left and performed until the wee hours of the morning. Between doling out the occasional tidbit of her recent adventure and Ameiko's sudden departure, Kelistra has an easy time keeping the Dragon's audience entertained. She does not even regret failing to take the time to wash away the dirt and grime of her travels before taking the stage. At least she doesn't until the sounds and smell of Marduzi's breakfast awaken her from where she fell asleep on a tavern bench. "Gah, I totally should have gone home last night," she says. "I think this outfit's rank enough to take on a goblin tribe on its own."

I think someone should also take care of providing a map to the cavern to the glassworks people. For an appropriate fee.

Great idea Kelistra. Probably someone who can actually write (like Jordan once he can pick up a pen again).

Azmythe wrote:

[...]

Koya listens attentively, her gently creased face smiling at Azmythe's tales of adventure, "Very exciting, dear. The most fun I had was trying a new recipe of apple cake. Not quite the same as battling ancient spirits below the skin of the world." She presses another slice of cake on you, and is about to boil the kettle for more herbal tea when one of the ubiquitous urchins appears at the door.

The child say, in tones of great respect, "Mistress Koya? Ameiko asked if you'n' Mister Azmiff 'ere could come to the Dragon. She said it was a bit important."

Koya turns to you with one eyebrow raised, "Well, shall we?"

INTERIOR: The Rusty Dragon. Assembled heroes stand or sit, chatting together and with their friends Shalelu and Koya. Ameiko enters, looking tired and happy.

"My friends, thank you for gathering. I have a story to tell - a recitation if you will - and I have a request. I beg your patience for it."

She clears her throat.

"This morning I finally finished translating the letter that you found for me. When you know what it says, I believe you may guess my request. This is the letter that my grandfather sent to his son, my father."

Ameiko's voice is clear as she declaims from memory the words of her ancestor, transported across the years in ink and parchment.

The Letter wrote:

My son, my heir. You know now that I have kept secrets from you. You were always a perceptive son, and while you may not understand my reasons for secrecy, I hope that you realise it was necessary. Know that I was not angry with you for opening the warding box - I was angry with myself for withholding the truth from you and forcing you to seek out what I should have given you. The words I spoke to you were from anger with myself, and it shames me to think of them now. I write this note as an apology, and to beg you to leave these secrets to history.

The next few days will be the most important I have faced in many years. If our family's enemies have, as I hope, forgotten us, I shall reunite with you and your wife, and I shall reveal the truth to you. But if they still seek the contents of the warding box, I fear that I may not speak to you again. The box holds our family's greatest treasure, so I have returned it to Kortun's care, and it shall remain hidden in the secret third vault under Brinewall Castle - obscured from our enemies, I hope and pray. I will not grant our foes the satisfaction of killing me themselves - if it comes to it let my death, by my own hand, be my final act to protect you, so that our enemies believe our line ended.

I have instructed Tsutami to protect you, and to deliver this letter to you only if I fail to return. If I can, I will reveal all to you myself. If I cannot, this final missive from a father to a son must suffice as an apology in place of an explanation, and you must flee to the south and never return here to Brinewall. If our enemies find what I have hidden, there will be nothing for you. If they do not, they will lie in wait here forever for your return.

I hope to see you again soon, my son. But my heart tells me I will not. I am sorry to have failed you. But I am proud of you, and I know you will survive this old man's shame and make a brave, bright life wherever you settle. You are strong, and must remain so. For if you are reading this and I am gone, know that our enemies will never stop searching for you. That is why, even in this letter entrusted to my most faithful servant, I cannot reveal the full truth."

Ameiko's trained bardic voice ceases, and she looks at you to gauge the effect of her words.

Azmythe happily takes the cake (Enoch makes sure to get his due as well). "Of course. You should hear Kalistra tell the tale. I think she might be gifted by Shelyn." He offers Koya a hand and escorts her to the Rusty Dragon.

Malcolm nods solemnly to Ameiko, then stands.

What do you require of us in light of these words, Mi'Lady? How can we help?

Marduzi nods to Koya and smiles again as the pair make their way into the Rusty Dragon. He listens, intent on Ameiko's words, as she translates the message from her grandfather. From the table where Marduzi sits, he can see Koya also listening and as Ameiko finishes, Niska's words come back to him and answer Malcolm's question. I'm glad I was able to help the Sheriff with the goblins, because it looks like that journey is about to begin. "It's Brinewall isn't it Ameiko? It sounds a little familiar, but I'm afraid I can't place it. Definitely not on the Riddleport to Korvosa route."

"So when do we leave?" He asks and looks earnestly at Ameiko.

"That's deep." Responds Azmythe. "Your grandfather speaks to you from the grave talking about an ancient and horrible family secret. A secret that killed your grandfather and threatens to end your family line, including you. The question is how do you feel?"

When Koya arrives with Azmythe, he calls out to them warmly and waves them over to wait for Ameiko’s presentation.

After the presentation, Rommin’s thoughts swirl with joy at the idea of seeing Brinewall Castle, especially with Ruhk’s comment. Then his face falls in visible disappointment when he catches sight of Koya out of the corner of his eye, and his promise causes the hopes to evaporate as quickly as they materialized.

Jordan looks at his sister, if she is still here, and speaks:
"I am encouraged by the honor and strength of the family ties revealed in this letter. Your ancestors do you proud, Ameiko. Count me in any effort to learn more."

Jordan looks at Ruhk and Malcolm with a smile. "If I am still poisoned, I am sure I can arrange transport."

Ruhk has been sitting still, idly scratching his sides with a curious frown on his face turns to grin at Jordan.
"Oh sure, I'll help out, but this time I'll be carrying you upside down, just so you know."

He then goes back to scratching, looking more and more alarmed.

What IS this strange itch...?

"If you're looking for help finding the warding box, Miss Ame, count me in," Kelistra says shortly after hearing Ameiko's translation. She blushes slightly as she realizes what she's said. Haven't called her 'Miss Ame' since the first time I played a solo in the Dragon.

Some of the tension leaves Ameiko's body as her friends react positively to her news. She tries to answer all of you.

"Yes, Brinewall. It's a good long way north - maybe five hundred miles all told." You can try a Kn (local) check to see if you know anything about Brinewall Castle.

"As to when we leave," Ameiko grins back at Ruhk, "I have a thought. Shalelu, do you know when Sandru is due back from his latest trading venture?"

The tall elven ranger replies, "Soon, within the week. That's an excellent idea, Ameiko."

Ameiko smiles gratefully, and continues, "Kelistra, straight to the point as ever. And Azmythe, always you ask the difficult questions - excited, surprised, relieved, overwhelmed, and grateful."

Koya, sitting quietly until now, looks from Shalelu to Ameiko and back, "Oh, I see. That is a good idea. But you will need a fortune teller, or risk terrible bad luck."

Halvor stands and speaks for the first time, his metallic skin almost reflecting the light of the fire, "If Koya goes, count me in as well. My debt to Koya, for all she has done for me, has yet gone unpaid."

Turning to Jordan, "Never fear, I'll have you to full health by the time we leave."

Ruhk, still scratching furiously grins at Ameiko.
"A whole week? Whatever shall we do to pass the time? I'm sure the more cerebral members of our little band can come up with all sorts of usefull and clever ideas...but we'll need provisions..."

Ruhk then turns to Shalelu.
"And being a hunter I challange you to a contest, we'll see which of us can gather the most provisions for the trip in a week."

If I win maybe I'll impress her a little, and if I lose...well, then I'll get a better messure of her skill...plus getting to hang around her is...nice.

Female Human (Varisian) Bard 2

"Big Bro' will come with us? Yeah, that's a very good idea." Kelistra leans against the tavern wall with a goofy yet happy look on her face.

He smiles and blushes slightly...

Ameiko did not have to look far for the elf, like Kelistra, he ended up sleeping at the tavern.
Slowly the facts discussed around him start to sink in past the raze of the night before.

Quite a long trip Mei. You can count on me too if you require more help.
May you find what you look for friend.

The young mage is excited as he packs up for a 'road trip'.

"Brinewall Castle, doesn't sound like a resort. Well, it is not the destination but the journey." the Varisian muses philisophically

Koya smiles. "Bless. It'll be good to have the company."

Shalelu accepts Ruhk's challenge, "Sure as rain in spring. Do you want to hunt together or separately? Anyone else want in?"

Ameiko glows with relief at your support. She gestures at the carved chest, and at Tsutami's equipment. "Everything that has value to me is contained in the letter, and in your tales of adventure. Everything else, I would like you to take with my thanks. Use it or trade it for equipment that better suits your needs"

Oh well...maybe next time...

"I'll absolutely join the hunt! Our little mission won't ever hurt for fresh food!"

Then, catching Koya out of the corner of his eye, he adds "of course, perhaps we should just go out two at a time. We have to make sure the core of our little force is safe too."

Azmythe never actually agrees to go. When the time comes, though, he'll be there.

Ameiko claps, "So we're decided! I'm so happy to have your help. The road to Brinewall has an unsavory reputation, but I am sure that between us we will rise to the challenge of the journey. I am sure that Sandru will be excited to have a new journey planned out for him already!"

So by my reckoning you need to:

  • divide up the treasure you have found
  • sell what you're not using - ask me if there is any sale prices are unclear
  • make purchases - let me know what you're looking for and I'll tell you if it is available in Sandpoint
  • repair the broken sword of Tsutami
  • address the matter of the glassmaker's crystals
  • settle any other affairs in Sandpoint - don't expect to return very soon

While I need to:

  • answer a few questions on the discussion thread and in PMs
  • reread the rules on caravans to prepare for Sandru's return
  • organise a brief hunting-based skills challenge

Shalelu relaxes as she leads the hunters among you out into the trees of Tickwood. "It's good to be in the woods again. Sandpoint is nice, but so many people."

The Tickwood teems with boar, deer, and plump pheasants perfect for the pot.

Who decided to accompany Shalelu? I have Ruhk, Rommin, and Marduzi - is that everyone? Each of you, tell me what you're hunting, and make a Survival check.

I can look into getting the sword repaired in Marduzi's absence.

GM Will, is Ameiko claiming the items in the chest, or is she turning them over to the group? I think we are assuming she is keeping them as her birthright, but we would need to know for sure before running the numbers on the treasure.

Thank you - well reasoned.

GM Will:
I would like to attempt a Romance check on Ameiko the moment that I deliver the ballad that Kelistra is preparing, along with the sword, if possible. If you are allowing us to play this angle, according to the rules, it says that this check to determine if she has a romantic interest can be attempted once per level. I will make the Sense Motive check before we hit the road.

Malcolm hunts down Kelistra, and approaches her with a serious, and slightly nervous look on his face. It is not a visage that she has ever seen before on Malcolm, not even when faced by foes and outnumbered. It looks like a mixture of fear and uncertainty.

Kelistra, have you had any luck in completing the ballad that I commissioned you to write? I would like to present it to Ameiko before we hit the road. It is very important to me.

Female Human (Varisian) Bard 2

Kelistra regards Malcolm's request and his expression. When he'd approached Kelistra as the crew walked into Sandpoint, it was easy to regard the request for a song as a bit of a joke. But this was different. Malcolm was serious about getting a song written.

Kelistra leads Malcolm to one of the Rusty Dragon's quieter corners before she speaks. "I'm glad we've got a chance to talk about this, Mal. I need to ask you something before I get started. What do you want to say with this song? You heard the song Ameiko was singing when we came to tell her about her family, so you know that she's a great composer. If you want to impress Ameiko, you'll have to do better than hiring a bard to write a song for her. I need to give your words, your thoughts, some polish and set them to music. I'll sing for Ameiko, but I have to sing as you. So, I'll ask it again, what do you want to tell her?"

Male Human (Varisian) Paladin/9 Warrior of the Holy Light/HP: 90/93/AC: 21(22)/CMB: 15/CMD: 27/Init: 2/Perc: 7

He smiles,

I want to tell her of the duel that I fought to recover her family heirlooms. I want to show her that I am worthy of her trust to take up the broken sword and continue to protect her, the heir of her family.

He reddens and speaks quietely,

In confidence, I want to use this ballad as a gift to spark our relationship as I will soon profess my love for her. Even if she spurns my advances, I will still maintain our friendship and guard her life with my own. That, I swear by Abadar's grace.
