Jon watches sombrely as the former paladin strides out to his destruction and he cannot help but feel an admiration for this holy warrior.
He did not flinch or falter as he embraced his end and as the sun destroys the vampire Jon walks forward to stand beside Erek

I don't know if your God will accept him, I don't know if there is even any redemption in the next life but I hope there is he says quietly as he turns away.
Moving back inside Jon helps Markus lay Morbar out on the cold ground and as he looks at his fallen friend he fears the worst, he cannot bring himself to hope he will return.
Despite all Markus power Sebastian didn't.
Stepping back he leaves him to his work and he waits anxiously silently willing the stubborn dwarf back to life.

"What the heck?!" - he roared - "What are you all looking at?! Did someone die or something?!" - the red bearded dwarf kept on growling as he stood up, and stared around at all of them - "So?!"

Boom!!

Jon can't help but laugh out loud as he rushes forward and roughly embraces the dwarf

yes, you did you dullard! Jon says grinning I can't believe you let that thing kill you ! It's not like it was much of a challenge, just a corpse in a can with a couple of fancy blades. And you call yourself a Dwinhack? Shame on you Jon says laughing with relief and joy.

you did well Markus, you brought him back to us. Jon says clapping the priest on the shoulder.

"He'll come back Jon... He's a fighter, He won't want to just give up like that." He says as he finishes up his spell.

Markus online nods as he hears his friend draw a large breath then blows out his normal bravado. "Welcome back Morbar, I knew there was no way of keeping you down." He claps the dwarfs on the back. "It's all done, we destroyed the monster that put you down and the witch too." He looks out on the sunny day. "The fallen paladin that helped us is done to, I have him redemption then he took his own life in the sun."

Erek watches the ritual with interest and smiles when the dwarf stands. The Desnan grows in power. What a sight that is! Never have I seen such a feat performed.

He calls out "Well done Markus!" and moves to shake his hand in respect. "That was a true wonder!"

We just took apart one of the ways creatures, I still don't understands what it was babbling on about but I can't just leave it up to him being insane. He spoke with conviction, there's still so much we don't know about the Whispering Tyrant and what happened with Aroden when he slayed him." He ponders for a moment.

"You all know how much we've been played, we haven't heard from Adivan in ages. No gloating no need to be out friend. Think back to the visions we had at the Desna temple, we've seen it all but the last one."

maybe you are thinking too much Markus. That thing was the Tyrants servant, now I'm no student of history but it would obviously hate Aroden and Iomadae. Jon says
it probably believed everything it was rambling about, fanatics usually do. It doesn't make them true
He pauses and looks around at the others
I don't think there is much else here. We still need to work out the rest of that poem, the one about the carrion crown. It mentions a place...what was it? Damned if I can remember, Davos, you are always writing stuff down. What dos that poem say?
Jon asks as he turns toward the elf

Ponder for a moment and takes out his journal and flicks through few pages "Here could be something, the poem we had from when we fought Vrood does mentions Blood spilt atop the Iron Thorn, maybe some time in a library we could find reference maybe or even the archives at the Palatine Eye"

Eventually the group makes their way out of the Abbey and back to Caliphas.

Morbar is listless over the next few days and Jon and Erek's strength gradually returns to them with the help of Markus' healing.

But aside from some half-truths, the ramblings of a possibly insane undead creature and a vision without detail, the group has little or no leads on where to find Adivion and his recipe for the the Carrion Crown elixir.

Over this period your dreams of Kendra get stronger, all of you share them now. In them it appears as though she is far away or sometimes close and shouting but you cannot hear what she is saying. In your dreams her dark hair is streaked with silver and her eyes glow a piercing blue but she is Kendra Lorrimor nonetheless and it dismays you to think she is out there somewhere.

You begin to explore what means might be open to you to find her or Adivion. Davos favouring research, Markus divination, Cara through diplomacy whilst the others lend a stronger arm but your efforts prove largely fruitless.

Then, on the afternoon of the fifth day, a letter is delivered to your inn.

At first you think it from Adivion, as has been his want these past months. But upon opening, it soon becomes clear that it is from a more unlikely source.

It reads;

It is my understanding that you are responsible for my release from Siervage's custody, and for that you have my thanks. I now make haste to return to my home, but there is one final piece of businessI must attend to. As promised, I will tell you what I know of the Whispering Way and their plans. I leave it up to you to judge the truth of my words, and your next steps.

Upon further study of the sample of the elixir the Whispering Way gave me, it appears that my theory that Prince Orlandi is the cult's target was ill-founded. Instead, I have determined haht the concoction is meant for someone else - Adivion Adrissant himself.

Though to me it appears that the cult does not plan on transforming Adrissant into a lich, however. Rather, it seems they intend to remake him into the most powerful lich the world has ever known - some sort of vessel for the Whispering Tyrant himself. I desire no part in such ill-conceived goals, and urge you to find Adrissant as soon as possible.

At this point, I am convinced the Whispering Way has fled to their greatest stronghold, the fortress-monastery of Renchurch, in the haunted highlands of Virlych's Hungry Mountains, ready to enact the final phase of their plans. Should you decide to venture there in search of them, I wish you good fortune.

Sincerely yours,
Ramoska Arkminos

Markus reads over the letter to himself once then again, his face shifts to anger he then reads it through clenched teeth. "Adivion is beyond insane." Markus seems to start to loose himself. "That bastard! All his mind games all his.. bullshit!" He shouts out, passing the letter on to the others to look at himself.

"All his talk of not wanting anything to do with the way but wanting to save this world... When we find him, nothing will stop be ending him." He shakes with anger. Over the past few nights its become clear to the rest of the group Markus has been getting more irritated as he has gotten less sleep with the dream of Kendra coming stronger and stronger. "The dreams are too much, their a gift.. I have prayed to Desna to give me the power but I feel helpless I can't understand Kendra I can't reach out to her." He holds his head in his hands as he starts to mutter to himself.

Anything from the knowledge rolls?

Renchurch

Nestled among the rough peaks of the western Hungry Mountains, the bladed cathedral of Renchurch has long been the spiritual heart of the Whispering Way.

The fortress-monastery is not only a site of pilgrimage for those seeking to walk the whispered path, but also a protector of relics sacred to the cult and a vault of blasphemous knowledge. Within these unhallowed halls, scholars, monks, and arcanists silently labor to unlock the whispered secrets of the cold embrace of unlife.

Built on the ruins of an ancient Pharasmin abbey, the grounds of the Whispering Way’s most famed retreat look like a horribly decayed mockery of what might have once been beautiful holdings that served the living. The cathedral now hosts a disciplined congregation whose unswerving devotion and loyalty to the cult are somewhat at odds with the self-serving mindset of most Whispering Way adherents.

Renchurch lies about 200 miles from Caliphas

The Hungry Mountains

The Hungry Mountains are one of the largest geographical features in all Ustalav and dominate the southern reaches of the country. The mountain range is so large it encompasses the entire county of Ulcazar and stretches into neighboring Amaans, Ardeal, Caliphas, Versex, and Virlych. The Hungry Mountains have a dark reputation, as its depths harbour several sites of foul repute. These including the Hundred Haunted Vales of the Hungry Mountains and the undead-haunted Ghorcha Pass.

The terrain of Virlych is uninviting at best, and hostile at worst. Anchored to the northwest and southeast by ancient, stunted forests of twisted trees and malevolent creatures, these regions grudgingly give way to the Hungry Mountains, which erupt from the plains like rotten teeth on a cankerous jawbone.

Polluted rivers carve deep valleys throughout the range, draining the melting winter runoff of the highest peaks into churning cisterns of gray water that stink of maggoty rot. Game is scarce, but unnatural creatures thrive in the cursed realm. Fell magics still writhe and pulse across the dead wastes, remnants of Tar-Baphon’s bony death grip on the land that he refuses to relinquish even after centuries of imprisonment. East of the Mesmos and Barrow Run rivers, violent, seemingly malicious weather plagues the Hungry Mountains. West of these rivers, bruise-colored clouds perpetually crown the mountains with sly malevolence, seemingly driven by the imprisoned will of the Whispering Tyrant himself.

Jon reads over the letter and he is not surprised at Ramoskas theory about Adivion.
He knew what kind of man he was.

Adivion is a scheming liar. He may be using the way for his own ends he may be working with them. It doesn't matter, we will pay him back in blood for all he has done Jon says grimly Erek is right, we can show him no mercy, no hesitation. We destroy him and the way.
If that means we have to take them on in their own stronghold ...so be it. We have come too far to cry off now

Markus shares the information he knows on Renchurch and the Hungry Mountains.

"We will get him, we know what needs to be done." He pauses for a moment. "We should get our gear together tomorrow, then we'll teleport to a town close to the cathedral. We'll try and be tactful, but this could be it... We might finally find Kendra there." His voice picks up as the idea of finally finding her picks his spirits up.

Ruwido is the only settlement in the HUngry Mountains of Virlych. It is a hovel-village secreted away where misbegotten, cast out, mad and deformed souls can find a home, hide their faces from the world and find a modicum of peace and acceptance. The village is found on the western hills of the Ghorcha Pass close to the waters of the Barrow Run. The settlement is shunned by practically everyone including patrols from Lastwall and Amaans, while the villagers themselves are suspicious of any strangers approaching.

One of the few regular and trusted visitors to Ruwido is the mute cleric of Desna called Azra.

"It will be a good place to start, they might have heard some rumors or seen anything that could give us an idea of what we face. But they will be untrusting and suspicious of us, we'll do our best to be friendly. Now drink and eat up, this might be the most rest we get for a while for tomorrow we gear up and we'll teleport there."

Jon sits quietly as they talk over the next steps of their plan.
They plan to step into the lions den, hell they plan to place their heads in the lions mouth and he cannot help but long for it, he wants to pay back the way for everything they have done.

our only hope is to take them unawares. If they learn we are comng then we may be walking into a massive trap.
Either way I see no other road before us. I have a few items I want to get and then I am ready to go.
We need to find out as much as we can about their stronghold. Then we hit them hard. We destroy them all.

It's fine to teleport to Ruwido by the way. Markus, can you carry enough people now?

The Final Chapter: Shadows Over Gallowspire

The sun rises over Caliphas, the watery light pouring over spires and edifices of the ancient gothic architecture.

There is fog everywhere, rolling in from Lake Encarthan like a crawling corpse fresh from the grave.

Fog up the bay, where it flows among green aits and meadows of the Devil's Cut; fog down the bay, where it rolls defiled among the tiers of shipping, and the waterside pollutions of the great city.

The misty fingers creep into the cabooses of collier-brigs; fog lying out on the yards, and hovering in the rigging of great ships moored in Traitor's Drop; and thick dew drooping on the gunwales of barges and small boats. As you descend from your rooms into the common room of the Inn you can see the winter in the eyes and hear it in the throats of ancient pensioners, who wheeze by the fireside that burns and crackles brightly in the hearth, even at this early hour.

From your breakfast table you can just about see chance people on the bridges over the canals that run through the city like veins, peeping over the parapets into a nether sky of fog, as if they were up in a balloon, and hanging in the misty clouds.

It is in this grim and wintery scene, that the group begins to plan it's final pursuit of the Whispering Way.

Just setting the scene and leaving it open for some reflection/rp over how far you've come and the things you've seen. Otherwise, we'll move on.

Davos will have to take one person

Markus moves through that tarven to sit with the others, suited up in his usual deep purple robe with a large butterfly emblazoned on the front wrapping around his back, it fades in places and mostly threadbare from long use.

Settling in he calls over to the bar for more water and breakfast. "Eat up well, the road before us is far from over and I don't see it offering us many more mornings like this." He pours water into his cup and takes a long drink. "We have the gods guiding us. I have spent a lot of time this morning praying to Desna to protect us, she will give me the power to light our path."

As the food is brought he quickly cuts into it the think bacon and fatty sausages, scoffing them down as if it was his last meal. "We teleport into Ruwido, that will be where we gather some information. I don't want us going in blind we have stumbled through out all this grasping only the slightest of information. If they can't give us anything we'll move to the temple."

He then looks at each of them, remembering just how far they have come and what each of them has gone through. Remembering the first day they all met, that dark rainy day to see a friend to his grave and now months later all sitting in the inn speaking of the end. "We've all come so far, lost friends and even made new ones. But don't forget we're all in this together. I wont let anyone fall, I wont let anyone be taken away again."

He then takes another large gulp of water."I want to spend a few more minutes today before we leave to speak to Desna again, I need questions asked. I want to ask her about Iomedia.." He looks to Erek. "I want to ask her about the Way about Kendra.. I've always shied away from this power, There have been things i just didnt want to know. But it's time I try, I wanted to ask what each of you thought I should ask. It's a very strained connection, and normally only answered with a yes or a no. I'd like to ask for some advice from you all."

Jam i'd like to cast prognostication - mind looking into that for me.

Pushing away his plate Jon sits back and reaches for the mug of black coffee before him, as his hand reaches for the handle it suddenly turns itself around so it is facing away from him and with a weary sigh he sits forward and turns the mug back toward him.
Some things had not changed.
He was still haunted, the spirits dogged his every step, no matter how powerful he bacame he could not shut them out. Not without drinking....
The urge to drink was always with him, it was like another curse though this one he hoped one day he would beat....if he lived long enough.

Tearing by his mind away from such maudling thoughts Jon drains his mug and refills it swiftly.

dont be afraid Markus, we are long overdue some answers.
I have had little faith in the gods for such a long time. I stopped looking to the gods for help years ago, now I wouldn't know what to ask.
he says as his mind drifts back to his lost family and his fathers secrets whatever answers you get will probably not be the ones you want, even if you get a response. But I hope I am wrong, we could do with the help.
He says as he reaches for some toasted bread, slathering it with honey he chews it slowly

what are you planning on asking Markus?

Scoffing toast into his mouth he finishes writing his letter to the Esoteric Order of the Palpatine Eye, he let's them know they are going for the final push against the way and passes on his a copy of the notes on bloodbrew elixir they found in the cathedral, sealing everything in an envelope for it to be passed onto a messenger.

"Same as Jon, I don't have faith in the Gods even after all I've seen. I'm not sure what you will see we've had visions before from Desna about our path which was pretty cryptic, what you see may give you more unanswered questions."

Erek ventures out into the city to purchase equipment that will help him face the Whispering Way. He wanders the streets and alleys of Caliphas, a grim shadow among the colourful crowds.

He visits many shops and stalls before stumbling upon a tiny store in a narrow lane near the docks. There he finds one of the things he seeks. After haggling for a time he leaves wearing a dark leather coat that shimmers odly and seems almost translucent.

He returns then to a store he visited earlier in the day. A magical emporium selling all sorts of esoteric items from books of lore to robes for mages. There he trades his cloak, his bandolier and some gold for an new black cloak.

A few more stops for more mundane items and then he returns to the inn to eat and sleep.

The following morning he wakes, dresses and joins the others to break their fast. He eats in silence while they talk of how they all met and how far they have come. As he listens he regards them with his inquisitor's eye, sizing them up and examining their strengths Are we few enough to meet this challenge and destroy the Way in their own house? Iomadae please let it be so He speaks then.

"Whatever it was that brought you together matters not now. Nor do the trials and terrors you have faced, except to have tempered you like Stella hardened in a blacksmith's forge. I have served with good men, facing the minions of the pit, but you are great men."
He glances at Cara "Figuratively speaking of course dear lady. I have come to know you as we faced horrors from beyond and the foul undead. If it is left to is few to face this challenge and to stop the Way once and for all then I believe the fate of this world could be in no safer hands. As individuals we ante strong, but together we are greater than the sum of our parts. The gods have seen this and set us this fate. We are the last bastion now. We stand in the doorway and push back the darkness. When we find Adivion we may also find
The Whispering Tyrant. It may be that some of us die that day but we will not falter. We cannot falter."

He falls silent then and when Markus talks of communing with the gods he shrugs "I don't know what to ask. If you can, find out if the Way's fortress is protected by magical means. I have an idea, a ritual that may help us greatly but it relies on the very stones of that place not being warded from magic"

What will you do if you do not like the answers, Markus? Perhaps you should consider whether you are asking the right questions of your deity.

The voice is rich and warm and altogether familiar. Though not altogether welcome.

There are gathered groups of men and women huddled together in the inn, their thin coats and the flames that sputter in the hearth scant protection against the chilling fog.

You look through the crowd for the source of the voice and, to your combined horror, surprise and fury, see Adivion Adrissant seated alone at one of the tables, straight-backed, proper, and ever resplendent.

Why don't we talk? he says, sounding perfectly amiable. Really talk. There's really no need for anything other than that.

He extends a hand, gesturing to the seats around the table.

son of a b~+%+ must pay ! Jon snarls as he stands abruptly, knocking his chair over.
Dragging his sword from its sheath he moves purposefully towards the man who seemingly is behind all of their troubles.
The arrogance and audacity of the man was so utterly galling it took all of jons self control not to unleash hell right here in the midst of the tap room.

The crowd sraggers back in shocked fear as the armed madman draws his blade.

Some cry out in anger, the innkeep - a burly man in his late fifties pulls a leather bound greatclub from beneath the bar and slams it on the bar loud enough for the glasses on the shelf behind him to rattle.

I spent every penny I ever earned to buy this place and I'll be damned if I see it trashed today over whatever your quarrel is. You'd better sheathe that blade, sir, or the guard'll take it from you.

Indeed. agreed Adivion. And after all, what would be the point? This is just a simulcrum anyway. he adds almost sheepishly in a whisper. Why risk an errant sword blow stroking one of these good folk when all i want to do is talk?

Erek glares across the room and says coldly "I have nothing to say to you, apostate, other than to say I will end you and turn your dreams to ash!"

With that he deliberately turns his back on Adivion."[/b]

Jon glances over at the barman and sheathes his blade as he continues to move toward
Adivion.
He now knew what he suspected, Adivion was not really here.
Stopping before him he stoops and looks into the facsimiles eyes.

You want to talk to us you piece of shit? Come do it in person. Jon sneers but that's not your style is it? You are nothing but a god dammned coward. Your end is coming dead man, we'll be seeing you very soon Jon smiles coldly as he strides from the inn.

don't give him the time of day! Don't play his games Jon pulses a thought out to the others as he leaves.

"I want to know what he has to say he's been a worthy foe along the journey and he has enough sense to know he won't be able to parley with us for much longer"

Walking over to the table he pulls up a seat opposite Adivion looking at him coldly, but with admiration for what he has done "You played your game well but you know we are coming for you, so what do you wish to converse about?"

When your welcome is so warm Jon? No, sadly I don't think your disposition is conducive to a friendly discussion.

I think this is better for everyone, don't you? he asks, politely.

Thank you Davos. he says with genuine delight as the elf sits down beside him. Though I would disagree that I am an adversary and it dismays me that you think of me so.

I am trying to save the world. he frowns then. And I am not some megalomaniac when I say that, grand and ludicrous as it sounds even coming from my own mouth. But nonetheless, it seems that so far only I have the vision to see what should be done, I only hope you have the same vision - I know you have.

At first I thought you would be a thorn in my side and so I tried to frighten you off, then as I came to truly respect your abilities when I saw you for myself during the Trial I foolishly thought intimidation might be the answer. But of course you were resolute and it was churlish of me to even try, something I am not proud of.

And so I have been trying to talk to you as one reasoned individual to many. Tell me, what do you think I am trying to achieve, have your struggles led you to the same inevitable conclusion as I?

The way he speaks is so eerily like Petros that it is frightening and you have to remind yourselves that he was a great friend to the professor for many years before his death and he sought his own brand of vengeance on Auren Vrood when the over-zealous Whispering Way agent killed Professor Lorrimor.

Markus didn't move when he heard the all too familiar voice, it hounds him in his sleep enough. But when he finally hears the insane ramblings again he laughs.

"You're insane. Beyond Insane!" He stands and finally turns to look at the smug bastard. "You know what I'll be asking, you know the answers I seek. You still want to play your little games, we arnt your friends we never were." He punctuates the last few words to hit home. "You think you understand it all, you want to save the world and all that... all that bullshit again. I've had it with you, you're just a broken record. Is that fear in your voice? or just another friendly drop in, lonely at the top when you kill everyone that works for you I assume." He taunts the man.

"We don't care about your goals, we dont care about how 'reasonable you claim to be we know who you are, don't lie to us."

"Trying to save the world? From the plague of humanity? he asks in a pressing manner

"Well my thoughts, no doubt you want to resurrect Tar-Baphon to help you achive your goals, using the Way as a tool to accomplish this. But will you embody his spirit? To complete your task 'saving the world' as you put it" he says in a flat tone not a termor emotion in his voice

Why would I do that, Davos? Adivion asks plainly. What possible benefit could there be to releasing that monster and letting his undead legions swarm across the world?

Even the vampires understood how futile that would be.

No. he shakes his head. I intend to destroy Tar-Baphon once and for all - but not before I finish his work, his real work, that he and Aroden collaborated on.

He sees the looks of consternation on your collective faces.

It's true. Hard to believe though it may be. But there was a time that not only did Aroden and the Whispering Tyrant saw eye to eye, but their goals were one and the same - the raising of mankind beyond their paltry forms, to reach their zenith, the peak of their potential.

Their war broke out not because of Aroden's defence of humanity, but simply because their methods differed. I know this is particularly hard for you Erek, as a follower of Iomedae, the Inheritor of Aroden's flock. But I swear to you it is true. But Jon, is it so difficult to believe that the Gods have designs contrary to their altruistic visage?

Pause there for reaction/conversation

"You like to lord over everyone that you know so much, that you just seem to see everything better up there on your ivory throne." Markus continues to stand not moving just staring at the mans he has hated for so long now, the one thought to stop everything he stands for.

"Get to the damned point, we killed a monster of the way spouting nonsense about Aroden, is that what he meant that Aroden worked with the Whispering Tyrant? How did Aroden die? What is the point of all this?!" He barks out.

Adivion smiles warmly and spreads his hands.

Now those are the right kinds of questions, Markus.

More from me later, don't let that stop you reacting in the meantime, this is fun

He shakes his head, more of nothing from the cowardly man infront of him. Kendra." He speaks her name, he lets it float out there for everyone to take it in. "Where is the woman you kidnapped, you then got yourself killed for your whispering way pets to bring you back later simply so we wouldn't think you did it. That all sounds very reasonable to me..." He unleashes his fist as he reaches into his pocket and pulls out a hair ribbon of Kendra's now covered in dried blood. "Where is she. You've done something to her I know it!"

Kendra is safer now than she ever has been before, or will be again for some time. he replies.

She was sick, Markus, deathly so. Genetic and degenerative, the final gift her father gave to her and this time through her blood. From the moment she was born her body began destroying itself and though I know she never mentioned it, her father took her to every priest and witch and faith healer he could find in Ustalav, Osirion and Cheliax. But none of them could help her, none could cure her ailment.

Sometimes there are things that faith and magic cannot heal. he slams his fist down on the table in the first real show of anger you have ever seen him display, even after you have threatened his life. But why should that be? We spend our lives scratching at the hems of the Gods and yet look at the horror that surrounds us every day - children wiped out when demons swarm across the River Kingdoms... he looks pointedly at Erek. ...or when dark forces conspire to condemn innocent lives to death in flames... this time his eyes fall on Jon. ....or when sweet innocents like Kendra are destined to wither like a rose in winter. He looks Markus straight in the eye.

Mankind is better than that. We deserve better than the capricious, spiteful whims of those who deem themselves greater than us.

The world is not ready for what Kendra has become. She is wonderful, and they will hate her for it.
