Male Gnome Cavalier/1

Trig, upon seeing an animal in peril draws his lance and charges on Fergus toward the plant, trying to cut it, "Whoooop, Finally some action!" Fergus barks loudly during the charge, eager to help Shadow.

Dark Archive

Lou notices that the area around the moss is extremely dry, then as he approaches, he detects a strong sweet smell in the air. It reminds him of restful summer days at the inn, but then he is able to shake it off, focusing on the task at hand.

Lou moves forward and begins bashing at the moss-covered bridge, making several indentations in the thick fuzzy carpet of purple and green.

Trig and Fergus please make fort saves for me. DC, as you may have guessed, is 12.

know what?: 1d4 ⇒ 4 know what?: 1d4 ⇒ 4 know what?: 1d4 ⇒ 3

Laurentii (I assume you share this with the party?):
As you watch the moss overgrow and cover the wolf, you can barely recall what it is: Purple Moss. You seem to remember it is vulnerable to fire...

Male Gnome Cavalier/1

Trig: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (5) + 3 = 8
Fergus: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (2) + 5 = 7

Well, crap.

Dark Archive

Sensing the sweet smell of the forest after it rains, Trig & Fergus fall into a deep, deep sleep, and their momentum carries them forward onto the bridge in front of Lou. There, they collapse into a jumbled pile.

Trig's Dream:
You find yourself in a lavishly appointed meeting place. Deep green tapestries hang from the walls and your adoring fans clamor around you. The wise old queen of the gnomes stands at the other end of the hall, awaiting you.

Laurentii stops in his tracks, a few feet behind Lou.

"Fire! Its vulnerable to fire! Do you have anything to help? Alfonso?" he says, quite alarmed.

Not waiting for their answers, he quickly moves his backpack in front of himself by rapidly switching its wait on a single shoulder. Then, he retrieves both his flint and steel and a torch.

Shouldn't we be switching to rounds?

Dark Archive

it is a hazard. it doesn't get a turn. it doesn't have dexterity. fortunately, it takes a while for it to suffocate you. treg and fergus have a bit.

Kirpate takes to the air and describes a high arc bask to Alfonso.

Alfonso considers the one vial of Alchemist's fire he carries before removing his pack and beginning to light a torch.

Once lit a gesture connects a fine black thread between Alfonso and the torch. Alfonso stands and the torch hovers at his shoulder. A word sends the flaming torch towards the bridge, skimming the ground ahead of the sorcerer.

{light torch, cast Mage hand on said torch, direct torch to burn moss free of party members. Range on Mage hand is 25 feet. Alfonso will take care not to come within 15' of moss. Fort save if needed: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (20) + 2 = 22}

Laurentii watches impressed by Alfonso's display of magic while his mind races to try to find what caused some of their companions to head into the moss. Deducing that the moss must be secreting something that influences people's mind, he stays were he is, kneeling with an unlit torch in hands.

"Lou, wait, come back. We do not need someone else to fall pray to this mold."

Dark Archive

With his skill at arcane finesse, Alfonso carefully burns up the moss until it seems to react. As if in a wave, the moss grows up and plunges into the torch, sending both the purple + green plant and the torch over into the creek bed below.

As the plant growth tumbles away, shadow is revealed beneath the carpet of moss. Treg Jegman shakes himself awake immediately, but the two wolves seem content to sleep a might longer.

Shalewen, for her part, seemed terribly distraught over the whole occurrence. You think she was probably paralyzed by second-guessing herself. She visibly recomposes herself, and comes up to put a hand on Alfonso's shoulder gently.

"Thank you... perhaps I am-- I apologize for being so brash earlier."

Stunned but still overly curious, Laurentii carefully approaches the bridge, torch in hand. Partway, he says, absent-mindedly:

"Well done Alfonso..."

Upon the bridge, he looks down into the water, trying to find the moss. It takes only a few seconds for the novelty of the situation wear off. Once it does, he extends a hand to help sir Jegman up and return with him toward the rest of the group.There, he waits for Shalewen to fully regain her composure before speaking.

"That was... surprising. Should we expect anything else like this in the swamp?" he says, himself searching his extensive knowledge for any other hazards that might be found in such an area.

K.Nautre or Geography: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (9) + 9 = 18

"So, is everyone well enough to continue the tracking?" he asks to the others, looking at each of them in turn, looking slighly concerned.

screaching, while bobbing atop Alfonso's head

"He's an ass...He's an ass"

Male Gnome Cavalier/1

Trig wakes up, slightly dizzy and his vision blurred for a few seconds, "Wh-where am I? What-what? Oh? Oh. Well er.. what just happened? I was having the most astounding dream."

When they continue with the walking, Assuming no one has any objections to continue tracking Trig looks up at Alfonso, "Good Sir, I do like your bird. What type is he and from where did you get him? And how does he become a tattoo? "

Dark Archive

Laurentii assumes that other natural threats might lurk ahead. Purple moss certainly seems to thrive in damp or moist areas.

Shalewen approaches the cleared bridge and shakes the two wolves awake. She seems willing to continue tracking ahead for you all. The two wolves seem to revive without any sign of serious harm.

Dark Archive

Assuming you all forge ahead...

You make your way along the path and Shalewen calls a halt before going to scout ahead.
If anyone wants to scout with her, please say so.

After a few minutes she returns. "It is the goblin village ahead." she says, slowly streaming out the words.
"It looks damaged... I did not see any goblins."

"Sounds like some of the greenskins got a tad too excited with their loud toys. I wonder if the Mayor will pay for ear fragments."

"Go make yourself useful inkblot. We'll be on this trail until we reach the village. Find a perch where you can see both the trail-head and the village, watch the place until we get close and then report."

"Kirpate is not a bird, more a side effect. A magical disease runs in my family. Kirpate was part of the cure. Don't worry as far as anyone knows he is not contagious."

Lou listened to the report acting like the experienced adventurer.

hand on his chin he ponders the possible choices that lay before him.

Then with a brilliant flash of inspiration.. lets go investigate that village, if the goblins are not outside, they may be hiding until night time. I heard they can see in the dark.

Lou then starts to head toward the village and when he realizes nobody is following he looks back well?

Dark Archive

Shalewen and shadow prepare to follow Lou, letting him lead closer.

Male Gnome Cavalier/1

Trig nods at Lou, mounting Fergus and drawing his lance.

Dark Archive

This complex of crude old huts connected with wooden catwalks, all are held aloft by thick sturdy beams.

Little more that a village in side, this is a dirty palisade fort set atop a hill of solid ground. A wooden gate in the north palisade wall lies in ruins. A large green pool on the northeastern side breaks the palisade and allows a clearer view into the village's insides.

MAP

Fortunately, having Kirpate overhead improves your understanding of the lay of the land. There seems to be some kind of pit in the front of the complex, and a ruined building right near the pond.

...There appears to be no movement outside of any kind.

"Time to suit up."

Alfonso taps his leather clove and with a word that makes your ears feel full of sludge all the strange man's tattoos expand until he is showing no un-inked skin.

The new ink fades and his skin appears shiny and slick.

{Casting Mage Armor +4 armor for the next two hours.}

{No problem Lou. Have fun at the dinner-thing}

Kirpate returns and reports as instructed.

{Judge a man by his questions rather than his answers.~
Voltaire.
Question one. Could Kirpate see the bottom of the pit just inside the broken gate? Was there water in the pit?
Question two. What is the difference between the solid lines and the dotted lines on the map? Same question with the heavy vs the light lines in the S and SW areas.
Question three. It appears that there is only one fully enclosed building in the village, correct?
Question four. What is that smushed area in the eastern section south of the lake? }
The all important question five. Did Kirpate as an omnivorous insectivore notice a surplus of birds/bugs? I mean if there were bodies anywhere about the black flies, the ants, and the birds that feed on same would be enjoying the buffet. }

"Well if we do not want to get wet, well wetter, it looks like the former front door is the best option. What do you think Lou? Sir Trig?"

{note: Not snubbing the former Shalewen. It just that there is nobody home to talk to. Any luck re: more players?}

Dark Archive

1. It is a muddy pit, with something in the bottom, where a fire took place.
2. Dotted lines denote railings on raised wooden plank walkways. (somehwat ramshackle in appearance.)
3. Each building is probably fully enclosed, but you only can see enough to get a general sense of the layout. With closer inspection, you will get a better sense of where buildings end and begin. Light lines denote probable walls or building seams, but again further inspection will flesh them out into more solid understanding.
4. The ruins of one of the village structures. Partially overgrown.

Male Gnome Cavalier/1

"Hmmm... plans aren't exactly in my sphere of expertise but I do believe there may be more to this then simply goblins, we should tread lightly whatever we do."

Dark Archive

Shalewen adds, "Indeed, goblins are not known for being so silent."

"I suspect someone beat us to the ears. We should see what there is to see before we loose the daylight."

Alfonso bravely indicated the gnome should go first. Assuming Sir Trig agrees the small party makes for the front door. Kirpate flitting from branch keeping over watch between snapping up bugs and small tree frogs.

Dark Archive

I assume Trig goes along with the plan.

1d20: 1d20 ⇒ 11
Kirpate can hear movement within one of the buildings. The party crosses through the threshold unmolested, the scent of charred flesh lingers over the courtyard. Although you are partially covered in shadow, the humid swamp air is nonetheless making it a hot and nasty afternoon for most of you.

"The wall's not much but it is better than being open.

Logic and the distance modifiers on perception say that the sound most likely came from the building closest to the gate. Getting the party in the triangle made by the gate, the pit, and the ladder to that building gives us a decent defensive position for the goblins usual rush-and-mob tactics.

Dark Archive

I keep waiting for players to chime in, but I won't in future. As I am moving house, scanner is out of action for the moment. I'll do what I can to update the map soonest.

You head up a small ladder, and find a filthy empty room up in the watchtower. A small-size shortbow lays on the ground, but it reeks of urine. The windows look out of the tower to the north and east, giving you a view of the ruined gate and the scummy pond.

PerC DC10:

{also, roll call please. Who is still here?}

In the tower.

Yech. A goblin was here but thankfully no longer. If only we had a way to track these greenskins.

Dark Archive

Kirpate the fine familiar who circled the village at low level is able to determine the location several squads of squeaky goblins. Most are located south of you in the village. There are some more to the east. Sorry no map, yet. If we don't hear from the others, I'd be happy to run a solo for you, but I fear we have finally lost their spirits.

Alfonso, are you okay with the others dying, and then you wind up heading back to the road? or would you rather have new entrants meet you here in goblintown?

{Barring any of the others returning (good to hear from you Lou!) I would not be opposed to calling this a false start and hitting the big red reset button and returning this campaign to factory settings. No reason for the new folks to miss anything. We could also ret-con the new folks in. Just assume there were here the whole time and continue from gobboville. I can swing with any call you make boss.

Dark Archive

It was a bloody day, a terrible sight.: 10d20 ⇒ (15, 14, 12, 7, 12, 13, 3, 3, 17, 12) = 108

Alfonso, in spite of his peaceful desire to determine a motive behind the ambushes along the road, faced brutal combat in the village. The party knew where the goblins were, true, but Shalewen and Shadow did not survive the first engagement, and she took a pike to her throat from a scared greenboy. Shadow barred his fangs and dove into the daggers of six goblins himself, mad with the fury of loss. He wrecked carnage, but it was not what she wanted. She tried to say it while she lay there gurgling up her life's blood. She tried to tell him that he should live.

While they were in that first room, a call went out among the villagers, and the other goblins swarmed out of hiding. Fortunately Lou was at the door. He adeptly tripped, dodged and spun among the gang of tribal goblins, and kept the way clear for Alfonso to cast a few prickly surprises.

The chieftain and a few others fled out of the village through the gate during the fighting, and Laurentii and Trig went swiftly after them. They caught the goblins in a ford, and were about to subdue them when a great stalking monster with mandible jaws bearing sharp rows of predatory teeth showed up.

The sucking mud they fought in trapped Laurentii's boots, and the thing's claws rent his flesh until he succumbed. Trig and his companion would not leave, determined to earn their nobility, heedless of the cost. Fergus caught the thing's leg in his powerful Jaws while Trig raised high his weapon, splitting the grey-skinned swamp thing's belly wide and covering everything in the green slime that spewed forth from the monstrosity. The two returned to the village with Laurenti on a makeshift sled behind Fergus.

Lou, who had been hanging his head, turned to Alfonso. Most of the villagers had escaped. Neither of the men wanted to slay the goblins they had found. Still, there were the dead, and a half-ruined village, and then, outside those palisade walls, there was the swamp too. Brinestump. It was a name that did not hold any justice. There was no for such a place.

For his part, the mage had found something interesting. Picking through the detritus of a filthy goblin throne room was nothing to worry about when one came prepared with all the proper spells, after all. There was Tien jewlery, a kind of puzzle box with a brilliant golden wyrm of some kind on it, and then there were the fireworks, a whole wagon load. They were old things, and they bore scratches and filth on most every surface.

He showed the interesting items to Trig, and to Lou.

Pulled from the swamp, they agreed.

And as night fell, the insects began to gather in thick clouds, buzzing and chirping outside the walls of the place.

Pulled from that dark uncharted swamp, so close to home, and yet so full of secrets.
