Elisen Renard |
The found Summon Swarm scroll could be handy here. I don't think either of them could do damage to a bat or rat Swarm which would last as long as I concentrated on it.
Morti Hearthstone |
perhaps Elisen could summon swarm from the other side of the portcullis as a diversion while falric disarms the trap; best case they open the portcullis and we can hit them from two sides? Alternative, I stroll up to the portcullis and attempt a diversion via intimidate.
Barundar Hammerfist |
Barundar gives a curt nod to the offer of the protective spell, keeping his weapon at the ready in anticipation of the combat that is likely coming.
Yeah, a 16 to avoid the aoo does seem unlikely, and getting stuck in a bear trap would not only do damage, but reduce mobility, too. An alternate plan than that is likely the best way to go.

Falric Dawnstriker |
I am trying to understand the plan. You summon a swarm and let's say that they can't harm it. What if they just run away? Then what? And what are you going to do via a portcullis, Morti? Demoralize them? That lasts 1-2 rounds and again, if your check succeeds and they flee? Chasing them down to other rooms with other possible allies does not seem like a good idea. And Barundar, you have a shortbow, you can contribute.
Giant_DM |
FYI: Summon Swarm has a verbal component, which means:
A verbal component is a spoken incantation. To provide a verbal component, you must be able to speak in a strong voice.
Thus, the Perception check to hear the spell as it is being cast will be -5 modified by distance and the wall. Keep in mind that you may lose surprise immediately upon casting and we move on to initiative.
Morti Hearthstone |
right, either plan just a distraction to buy you a round to disarm the trap. Our Cabe has obscuring mist to hide your disarm? Alternately, I use domain power to haste Barundar to jump the trap--but three of us still on the other side. Option 3, I disarm the trap by stepping in it, and any round I can't reach an enemy, I domain haste you or Barundar.
Barundar Hammerfist |
I'd forgotten about Barundar's shortbow, so he does have that available. Not ideal, for sure, but he should be able to contribute to the fight even on the other side of the trap.
Falric Dawnstriker |
Ooh....I like that. Setting off the trap rather than spending one whole round disarming it. Falric has the best Reflex save and AC. He will vanish, set off the trap and hopefully not get caught by it and move into the room. Then Morti hastes Barundar and the rest of you follow. This way Falric can still get his sneak attack and the party can rush in after. Let's do it. Falric will drink his Shield potion and tell everyone to wait for the sound of the trap going off before rushing in.
Morti Hearthstone |
works for me. assuming we proceed:
On Falric's signal, Morti raises a hand in benediction towards Barundar, murmuring, "Angradd propel thi' weapon o' yer justice." -> haste 1 round
Giant_DM |
I agree, let's do this. Only need one thing: Falric's AC when buffed. The trap rules are an attack roll not a Reflex save, but since the halfling is aware of the trap, will roll against his normal AC. Just want to make sure I have it right and since you are casting Vanish and then moving, no going defensive against the trap.
Giant_DM |
Actually, Falric cannot cast Vanish, as that also has a Verbal component. He can stealth his way to the same spot as before and then move down the hallway over the trap, springing the trap and initiative:
Trap attack: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (17) + 10 = 27...Falric nimbly dodges the trap's steel jaws, as it just misses him!
Initiative:
Rogue: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (6) + 3 = 9
Flood Troll: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (12) + 8 = 20
Barundar: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (14) + 2 = 16
Cabe: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (10) + 4 = 14
Elisen: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (12) + 9 = 21
Falric: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (12) + 7 = 19
Morti: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (3) + 4 = 7
Elisen is up!
Elisen Renard |
I know I saw a map Before, but I'll be darned if I can find it.
Elisen moves to the hallway so she can see her enemy and begins casting off her scroll, planning on summoning a Swarm of bats.
Giant_DM |
You are too far Elisen to reach the hallway with the traps from the stairs. You can, however, reach the hallway with the portcullis. You start casting from the scroll. You will have to use a standard action next round to complete the spell.
The troll reacts quickly upon seeing the agile hafling licks his lips and says in Giant, "Glad yer here, I have room for a snack!" and charges at him and pounces, swinging twice with his claws, but he catches nothing but air!
Claw #1: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (7) + 8 = 15
Claw #2: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (4) + 8 = 12
Falric and Cabe are up, since Barundar has to delay to go after Morti.
Falric Dawnstriker |
Falric lifts his foot just time before the bear trap snaps shut on him. He sees the troll approach and he weaves and dodges between its legs and moves over to the flat-footed rogue and stabs him!
15' of movement when using Acrobatics, I should be able to reach:
Acrobatics check to move through troll's square vs. DC of CMD+5: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (16) + 12 = 28
Acrobatics check to move 5' diagonal to the rogue and avoid AoO vs. DC of CMD: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (4) + 12 = 16..add +2 for an 18 (1 use of halfling luck left today)
Attack on FF rogue: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (10) + 8 = 18
Damage: 1d4 + 7 + 1d6 ⇒ (2) + 7 + (6) = 15
Giant_DM |
1. CMD+5=21 (after charging), so first acrobatics check is good
2. CMD after charging = 16, so also good
3. Slice of scimitar is also good!
All legit!
Falric flips his way under the troll's legs and rolls in front of the half-orc rogue and buries his scimitar in his chest, causing a vicious wound. The experienced half-orc still lives, gravely wounded, and recognizes what a dangerous foe the halfling is.
Cabe is up!
Updated Combat Map
Red lines are Falric's Acrobatics move.
Giant_DM |
The troll growls in a tough voice. "Are you hurt, Daktani? Little bastard went right past me."
The half-Orc responds, "Yes, you idiot. I saw that." Holding his wound, Daktani steps back 5' from the halfling, retrieves a pellet from his belt pouch, and drops it at his feet. It explodes releasing a cloud of fog and both he and Falric disappear from sight, obscured by the mist.
Morti casts Haste, Bardundar with 40' of movement can just reach the troll and attack and then Elisen to start Tound 2.
Barundar Hammerfist |
Barundar charges forward into the fray, his dorn dergar swinging rapidly through the air before he brings it crashing down at the troll!
Dorn Dergar Charge: 1d20 + 6 + 2 ⇒ (7) + 6 + 2 = 15
Dorn Dergar Damage: 1d10 + 4 ⇒ (1) + 4 = 5
Giant_DM |
Actually, with the fog cloud covering a 10' radius, it covers the portcullis area and Elisen has no line of sight to anywhere inside the room so no place to summon swarm inside the room, so she either casts it next to her to play with the bats or she scraps the spell and loses it. Her choice.
As for Barundar, didn't you see the map? To reach the troll, you have to go around corners so obviously no charging. The troll dodges the dwarf's awkward blow.
Elisen Renard |
Elisen has to waste the magic from the scroll, knowing she couldn't control the swarm once she summoned it. She throws the empty paper down and moves 30' toward the group, ready to try to help again next round.
Barundar Hammerfist |
Sorry...I didn't look at the map. I posted just as I was laying down to sleep and forgot to check the map before I submitted it. I see now that there was no charging. I'll be more careful in the future.
Morti Hearthstone |
sorry I didn't note up front, but remember that the haste gives Barundar +1 bonus on attack rolls and a +1 dodge bonus to AC until my next turn. Might not have made diff on that attack, but the AC important against the troll.
Giant_DM |
Thanks Morti and no worries Barundar. I just wanted to make sure you had right link. Anyway, that +1 bonus makes a difference as the troll charged so he is -2 AC so the blow hits him!
The troll growls at Barundar and slashes at him twice with its claws, drawing blood once!
Attack: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (4) + 6 = 10
Attack: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (18) + 6 = 24
Damage:1d6 + 3 ⇒ (6) + 3 = 9
Falric and Cabe are up.
Falric Dawnstriker |
Falric can see 5' in the fog so he steps forward 5' and if he can see Daktani, he attacks him using non-lethal damage to capture him.
Attack: 1d20 + 8 - 4 ⇒ (14) + 8 - 4 = 18
Damage: 1d4 + 7 ⇒ (3) + 7 = 10
Miss chance of 20%: 1d100 ⇒ 81
Morti Hearthstone |
Morti moves to follow Barundar, casting daze (dc 13 will negates) on the troll as he rounds the corner.
Barundar Hammerfist |
Barundar tries to take advantage of the flare in the troll's vision by pressing the attack!
Dorn Dergar Attack: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (12) + 6 = 18
Dorn Dergar Damage: 1d10 + 4 ⇒ (9) + 4 = 13
Falric Dawnstriker |
Love a good flank.
With mist gone, Falric moves in to assist Barundar!
Attack: 1d20 + 8 + 2 ⇒ (19) + 8 + 2 = 29...threat
Confirmation: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (15) + 10 = 25
Damage: 2d4 + 14 + 1d6 ⇒ (2, 1) + 14 + (2) = 19
"Finish it off with acid Elly!"
Elisen Renard |
"Keep hitting it," Eli calls out as she moves to the side of the troll and pulls out her vial of alchemist's fire, preparing to use it next round.
Couting this round with last round, Id be a total of 60' moved from my current spot, which should get me troll side.
Giant_DM |
Actually, Elisen, since it so far in negatives after Falric's critical, all it needs to die is one acid splash, so it would be wiser to conserve your alchemist's fire.
Elly splashes the troll with acid and it dies. On the unconscious Daktani, you find:

Falric Dawnstriker |
"Bar, you should have a look at that wound. Anyone know how long someone is knocked out from a shot to the balls? Do we wait to question him or check out the other doors and see what else is down here?"
Elisen Renard |
"If he's going to be out a while, we might as well take a look around this place. We want to Be sure there is nothing else here to sneak up on us.". As she spoke to the boys, Eli looked at the magical items and expertly ascertained their properties.
"There's a Potion of Cure Light Wounds, two potions of Pass Without Trace, and a Belt of Tumbling,"
Falric Dawnstriker |
"I'd like to try on that Belt, if no one minds." He puts on the belt if no one objects.
1d5 ⇒ 4
"Let's try the door closest to us them." Falric opens the western door closest to the sword in the floor.
Perception: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (10) + 7 = 17
