"While I would love to nail this posting on the door of the Iomedae Church, they would probably tear it down as soon as it was put up. The church of Abadar may be a good compromise, he is a god of Law so them disrupting the lawful operations of the Baron would be opposed to their religion."

"I don't think there is a church of Abadar in Longacre," says Cimri, thinking hard. "I suppose I might have missed it, though. I didn't even know there was a temple to Asmodeus until I met Is, here. I thought the church of Iomedae was the only one." She shrugs. "Razelago said he wanted it on the notice post, though, which I'd expect to be much easier in any event."

"It is incorrect to assume that the word 'church' must always be used with respect to a physical building. The term certainly can mean a construct of wood, stone, and mortar, but it can also be used to mean the whole of a group of followers of a specific or pantheon of gods."

"That kinda puts the concept of nailing the decree to the church into a much harsher perspective," says Cimri, going a bit pale and with widened eyes. "Yikes."

For the first time, Ismene finds herself appreciating Envy's unique perspective. "Hah! Wouldn't that be fun? Pinning the decree on the chest of that goody-two-shoes Allomar!" Once her giggling fit subsides, she sighs. "But orders are orders," she says, stepping out of the carriage. With decree in one hand and nail in the other, she confidently strides up to the post. Placing the decree just above head-height, she drives the nail into the post barehanded. "Hear me, hear me," she calls out to the onlookers. "Behold, the will of the Archbaron! Resistance is futile!"

Sister Ismene's theatrics bring all of the bystanders to the post immediately to see what she's talking about. As the knot of onlookers reads, they start to grumble and complain to each other about being treated like prisoners. The exception to the complaining is the rather severe woman who was the first to approach the post and now approaches your group, looking at Ismene specifically.

Knowledge Local DC 10:
This is Doctor Gerya Rohalendi, who runs the town's hospice.

"Excuse me," she says, calmly. "This post leaves out a lot of important information, and renders me fairly confused. I'm a doctor. Will those who break curfew to see to a medical emergency be arrested? Half of Longacre is related in some manner. What does 'family' mean in this context? Is a group gathering at the tavern assisting the establishment in 'the natural course of its business'? How can those from outside the town obtain a writ of passage if they're not allowed into the town in order to visit the notary? Please explain." As she asks her questions the other townspeople make their way over to listen to the exchange as they finish reading the post for themselves. While the woman remains calm, the rest are visibly upset.

The questioning takes some of the wind out of Ismene's sails. She rolls her eyes at the woman, but decides that some clarification probably couldn't hurt. Quickly reading over the decree one more time, she rattles off the answers with confidence. "If you're sanctioned, you're fine. Medical emergencies aren't covered and will be handled case-by-case. By context, family means 'related persons living under the same roof who naturally congregate as a product of normal co-habitation'. Taverns are fine, as long as you're not fostering sedition and rebellion and you're home by curfew. Outside visitors must receive a writ of passage from the House of Fex, obtained elsewhere in the barony." Taking a breath, she raises her hand to stay any further questioning or comments. "Further clarification up to and including contradiction of those provided at this time will be made by the new sheriff once appointed."

When Sister Ismene returns, Muziel offers her a high five. "Nice speech!"

The doctor, if not the other people, seem assuaged by Sister Ismene's comprehensive and legalistic answers. The knot disperses with a minimum of popular muttering as she heads back to the carriage. None of the Allomars made an appearance through the whole thing.

"Yeah," says Cimri. "You make a natural lawyer, Is. Just one stop left, I think. Back to the Ash house to report in, unless anyone has any objections or other plans. "Festus to the Ash House, thank you for your service you have been an excellent driver I must say. " Nikolai fans himself and converses with his comrades. "You're most gracious, sir," acknowledges Festus. He gives a quick once-over to make sure nobody is left behind before the carriage once again springs into motion.

"Not quite, Lust," Cimri corrects Penelope. "We report our job accomplished and get paid before any meeting with the Archbaron is how I remember it."

The trip to the Ash house is slightly longer than it might have had to be, since Festus has to take the longer and more circuitous route through the south gate with the more direct route through the Castle Gate closed, but it's still much faster than it would have been on foot. Once back at the Ash House, you find Razelago waiting for you in his office as usual. Cimri gives an account of the events at the stops along the way.

"Excellent work," says the voice from the shadow behind the paper screen. "I admit I'm impressed by how well you performed at these tasks I've assigned you, so far. In recognition of your zeal and aplomb, I'm happy to inform you that I've increased your promised pay by fifty percent. You'll find it waiting in the usual place. Additionally, Archbaron Fex has agreed to meet you all in person. He's busy this evening, unfortunately, but I will everyone at Scarlet Crown tomorrow at nine, sharp." As ever, he waits to entertain any questions people might wish to ask him before heading downstairs to receive their payment.

Muziel:
The mirror is still where you left it, and the display on the other side of the room is much the same as before, with the mannequin moving or being moved to cast the shadows that supposedly belong to Razelago.

"If you don't want the swag to be recognized around here, I'd suggest Remesiana as the best bet," says Cimri, after thinking about Muziel's question for a moment or two. "That's the closest city I know of, though it would take a few days to get there. Less if you go by the lumber boats or if Nikolai wants to give you a ride." She pauses some more to give it some further thought. "While most people in town are familiar with Louslik, not everyone was close to him, 'cuz he stunk to high heaven. If it's stuff that isn't branded or the brand is removed you might be able to get someone to take it in trade. Maybe ol' whats-her-name, with the cats, or Tealan Ruckleer, who everyone says is a retired war mage."

Taking his time to search the chest and its immediate vicinity, Muziel sees plenty of footprints, which is to be expected since there are seven of you returning to this chest multiple times. As thoroughly as he's searching, however, he comes to realize that there's a vaguely circular patter to the general dust and debris the footprints are disturbing. The pattern is centered on the chest, almost as though something with wings has spent some time hovering over it.

Everyone has the rest of the day and night free, though Nikolai is engaged to perform at the Arch and Lark later. Lastly, upon resting tonight, everyone will level up to 2, but any downtime activities "today" will still be at level 1

Can Muziel tell whether the wings come from a large or small creature? I instinctively wonder if there's an imp involved.

Performance roll for Arch and Lark: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (9) + 10 = 19 Nikolai is a little nervous at first, but soon he performs a compelling gothic epic You and Me and the Rainbows

Muziel:

Muziel Survival: 1d20 ⇒ 11

Muziel can't really infer the size of the creature from the pattern he's spotted. Based on the size of the room, however, he'd put the upper limit on size at 'medium,' any larger and it would probably touch the ground accidentally, and he doesn't think anything smaller than 'tiny' would have the force to make enough of a disturbance in the debris to be noticed. It's not very specific, but it does start to rule out possibilities. Unless the leopard-like creature upstairs is hiding a set of wings really well, it also rules that out as an option.

Cimri snaps her fingers with recognition. "Yeah, that's her," she says, nodding confidently. "She sells potions from home to feed her cats. Or cat? I dunno, they all look like the same cat to me. It gives me the creeps so I don't usually go near there if I can help it. But, if we're going to be on bad terms with the Iomedaens, then we'll probably need to get our healing supplies there instead." She shudders a bit at the thought of going there. "Come to think of it, blacksmith might be another good option for fencing weapons and armor, but only if there aren't any brands on 'em. He and Louslik are pretty close."

Nikolai:

Perform Commission for 19: 1d10 ⇒ 6

Festus is easily able to take Nikolai to a shop that can accomodate his needs. He assures you that this shop is where the Archbaron and the previous mayor got their clothes when they didn't want to go further afield. You are neither disappointed by the quality of the materials, nor the craftsmanship of the tailor who makes it fit exactly.

The performance, later on, is pretty good after the rough start. The Arch and Lark is fairly unpopular in town, but you've cut such a large public image in your recent days in Longacre that a small crowd appears out of curiosity. It's well beyond ordinary local, small-town fare, but you perform it well and it seems the people who turned out came because they were interested in that in the first place. Those that turned up were pleased with the result, and seemed keen on another performance in the future. Madam Cembers pays you the two gold promised, as well as a commission of 6sp on the extra business you brought in, and tells you you're welcome to perform any night you wish. She's not used to having this many customers in a single night, and would like to keep it going.

Earlier, during discussion of selling items.

"Come on now, Cimri. Our boss is a big shadowy thing behind a curtain, and you're scared of a cat lady?" Muziel seems to smirk strangely as he talks about Razelago.

"I'm gonna see if we can get something in trade for these goods from her. Don't want to try the blacksmith unless we have to. Gimme a hand, Cimri." Muziel grabs the crossbow and tapestries. Hopefully Cimri can handle the box of armor. He then heads over to Nisra Wilmore.

After the meeting with Razelago, Ismene returns to the Asmodean temple. She catches hell from Father Nero for shirking her duties in the garden, but a tithe of 50 gold quickly smooths the situation out.

Feeling in a good mood, despite having been banned from her favorite tavern, she decides to take the rest of the afternoon to relax. After a light lunch and a short training session, she lights some incense and draws herself a bath, meditating in the hot water. At this rate, it won't be long before Cim and I can skip town. Watch out Egorian, here I come!

At the Arch and Lark, Ismene eats and drinks her fill while Nikolai performs. The atmosphere is stuffy and the menu seems pretentious, but the food tastes surprisingly good. Even Sarini's performance is more nuanced than she was expecting. Typically, she's never heard the piece he's selected before, but she finds herself drawn in by the rise and fall of his voice. Some of the vocal techniques sound like the sort of thing Sister Josephine would practice, but Ismene never got the hang of it. After the performance, she Nikolai a congratulatory punch on the shoulder. "Good show, old chap," she says, affecting a terrible accent.

When Muziel brings up the topic of the legality of their gathering, Ismene shrugs. "I'd say this falls under the natural course of business for this establishment. Besides, the new sheriff hasn't been appointed yet, and I seem to recall the guards turning in their badges."

Muziel and Cimri, earlier:

"Hey," she says, indignantly, pointing at the Gnome. "I never said I was scared of her. Just that I find her cats creepy." She hefts the box into a decent carrying position before adding, "lead on, little man."

After a decent walk the two of you arrive at what could only be the Wilmore House given Cimri's description of the place. The small, somewhat unkempt yard has white cats all over the place. The fact that each one looks identical to every single one of the others was not an exaggeration, either. Walking up to the front door, Cimri sets the box down and knocks. A few moments later an old lady answers the door with another identical white cat perched on her shoulder.

"What do you need, meow?" asks the cat, causing Cimri to pull a face equal parts horror and confusion. The old lady laughs at her.

"I'm just playing with a bit of ventriloquism, dear," she says, un-reassuringly still through the cat. "But seriously, I was just making a pot of tea. What do you want? Potions, maybe?"

At the Arch and Lark:

"Flattery will get you everywhere, young man," says Madam Cembers, her eyes going wide at the mention of the Archbaron's patronage. "If you can get him to actually come here, I'll throw in a ten gold bonus on top of everything else. That would simply make my year!" She seems hesitant with regard to the Umbres, but the thought of actually having a chance of getting Fex to visit her place has her so excited that she doesn't want to do anything that might jeopardize the opportunity and agrees to your suggestion. "With just one caveat, though. They can have one drink on the house as your special guests, after that someone has to pay for it, whether it be them or you. This is still a business, and I still have to make ends meet, after all."

"Is makes a good point," Cimri says, shrugging in regard to the notion that this gathering might be illegal under the new edicts. "Even if the interpretation is wrong, there's nobody around tonight to enforce it. I'm sure we have to be getting an exemption, what with all this work we've been doing for him. And if we don't... well, I've ignored the law pretty much all my adult life." She gives a sly grin.

Interacting with cat lady

Muziel is also confused for a moment as the cat talks to them, before breaking out into laughter with the old lady. "Hahaha! You should see the look on your face, Cimri! I like your style, Ms. Wilmore. Your cats are pretty, too," he adds, rather liking their white fur. "Are they related to each other? Yes, we're here for potions; mind if we come in?"

Once they have some privacy, Muziel continues. "Anyway, we have some things to trade," he begins, laying out the items they have. "Might not be quite your style, but we'll give you a good deal! You wouldn't happen to have a Wand of Infernal Healing for trade, would ya?"

Muziel is hoping to extract whatever wealth he can from the tapestries, masterwork crossbow, and armor into a Wand of Infernal Healing. I was thinking a partially charged wand, but if that's not available, Muziel has up to 400gp to make up the difference for a fully charged wand.

At the Arch and Lark

Delighted at his recent adventures with this entertaining group of evil-doers Muziel raises a glass in toast. "Here's to some more fun times ahead!"

At the Wilmore House:

Cimri flushes red, embarrassed by her reaction. Mrs. Wilmore just winks at Muziel rather than answering the question about the cats as she waves you in. Cimri rather sourly brings the box in without comment. One of the identical white cats starts to rub up against her leg and she tries, vainly, to shoo it away.

"Wands, eh? asks the cat still perched on her shoulder. "I don't normally deal in wands, they're a bit more than people can usually afford. Give us a minute to have a look-see." She opens up a box in the corner of the room and starts rummaging through it. There's the sound of clinking vials, which suggests most of the contents are probably potions. "Aha!" says the cat triumphantly as the woman pulls out a darkwood stick with veins of a dark, slightly glowing red along the length. "I made this one as a commission from Mayor Wottimir eight years ago, but she never picked it up. I don't normally take trade, but let us see whatcha got." She fusses over the goods, inspecting them. "You got some good stuff, here, we might be able to get some use out of it. The tapestries are nice. Tell ya what, we'll trade ya this unused wand for all this stuff and another ninety gold. Deal?"

At the Arch and Lark:

"Certainly, Sir," says Festus, taking the invitations and slipping them into a pocket. "I shall return, presently." He turns and heads for the exit.

Cimri joins in the toast as well. "Hear, hear!"

Penelope:
Sounds good on the shopping.

"Mayor Wottimir? Who's that? I thought this town didn't have a mayor." Muziel inspects the darkwood stick as if he knew what he was doing. Bluff: 1d20 - 1 ⇒ (13) - 1 = 12 But really, he couldn't tell a wand from a tree branch.

"Deal!" agrees Muziel, after waiting a sufficiently long time. He fishes out one of his recent reward pouches and counts out 90 gold. The way things were going in this town, Muziel was pretty sure they'd be attacked by more than flying hot chili soon enough.

"She was the mayor of Longacre for many years," explains the cat while Muziel pretends to examine the wand. "She disappeared just about eight years ago, which I guess is probably why she never picked up that wand you're holding. The way I heard it, she was murdered by her manservant Festus so he wouldn't have to do so much work. Last I knew he was still hanging aroung the place."

Cimri waits uncomfortably as a second cat starts rubbing up against her other leg. She seems incredibly relieved when Muziel declares the dead reached.

"Excellent," says the cat as the old lady takes a moment to count the money. "Come again, and tell your friends! I have a lot of mouths to feed, you see," she adds as Cimri starts edging for the door.

"Oh, hm . . . is that right," says Muziel as Festus's name comes up. "Why didn't they ever pin the crime on Festus, then? Who did Festus work for between that murder and now?"

Muziel sees that Cimri is eager to leave, so he makes his departure once he gets that answer. "I imagine we'll come by again soon. Always a useful market in potions!" Muziel bids his farewell to the woman and her cats.

Don't want to hold people up, I'm ready for the next day.

"Nobody ever found her, s'far as I can tell," she says through the cat, shrugging. It nearly falls off its perch from the motion, and gives the first genuine meow since your arrival. "So there wasn't exactly any crime to pin, I guess. I hear Festus went right on working for her as though she was alive, and still might be to this day. I dunno. I don't get out much anymore since the gout started flaring up. Ah, to be young again."

Advancing to the next day:

Sharp gables and tall, narrow windows lend Scarlet Crown, the Archbaron's manner just under a mile outside of town to the southeast, an abbey-like quality, as though this were a place for study and solemnity rather than leisure or laughter. A motif of rampant stags with antlers bloody from battle repeats among the iron rooftop finials and upon a crest above the stone entrance. Several guards patrol the grounds, and Halfling slaves scurry about here and there. A Halfling butler greets everyone at the door as they arrive.

"Welcome. You're expected in the master's office. Please remove your footwear and I will escort you there for your meeting with His Lordship."

Penelope in he dress, black tresses piled high, smelling of some flower. Insisting on riding in the cabin of the coach this time, she does a manageable not acting like her normal self, more subdued, less kick you face in. Easy enough to see it's an act, but she's trying. She does better at curtsyes and manners at least.

"I'll bet anyone 10 gold that Razelago doesn't make it to the meeting!" says Muziel with confidence as the carriage approaches Scarlet Crown. The building looks a little depressing to his eyes, though he can't deny that it is impressive.

Having realized he had not bothered to purchase some nicer clothes, Muziel instead made sure that his armor was brightly polished for the event. It did look rather impressive with the shimmer looking like lightning bolts, and maybe the Archbaron would appreciate seeing the gift in use. "Does everyone have to take off their shoes?" he asks, as the butler makes his request. Muziel looks down at the ground to see if the floor is carpeted or if his feet were likely to get cold.

Nikolai takes his footwear off as instructed. He is dressed in his new finery with sash. He is not wearing any weapons or armor out of respect. As he follows the Halfling, Nikolai will look at the pictures and statues displayed to get a feel for what is shown and to make conversation of. Nikolai tries to remember any pertinent information on the art

"What a lovely collection, I think I know a bit about some of these." Nikolai remarks as he looks around.

Ismene gives a low whistle at the sight of Scarlet Crown. "Dour. A little foreboding. I like it!" She fingers the pendant on her necklace as she admires the architecture. Dressed in her formal robes, removing her simple slippers isn't a problem.

As they're escorted to Archbaron Fex's office, she glances at the art on the walls. "I don't know much about art. Sarini, what's with all the naked women?"

oh, Penelope slipped off her newslippers as well.

"Yes, everyone," replies the butler to Muziel.

The floors of the manor are mostly stone, though there are carpet runners through the hallways. Cimri looks like she's about to protest the idea of taking off the shoes as well, but since everyone else is going along with it, so will she. The art on display is fairly banal to Nikolai's trained eye. While indeed nice, it seems to have been chosen to meet an expectation of there being a certain amount of art without any unifying style or taste. The butler leads the group up a set of wide, stone stairs to the second floor, then down a long corridor to a stout black door, currently open.

The inside of the Archbaron's office is appointed in midnight ebony and crimson satin. Towering bookshelves, glassy-eyed taxidermic creatures, and curtained alcoves line the walls. At the far end of the room a large desk and throne-like chair sit beneath a coat of arms displaying the battling, bloody-horned stags of House Fex. Behind the desk a wide window overlooks the manor grounds. Archbaron Fex, a spare-looking man with slick salt-and-pepper hair and a long, thin, waxed mustache stands up from behind the desk as everyone enters. He nods to the Halfling butler, who nods back and swiftly disappears.

"So you're the agents that Razelago has recommended? I can't say you're what I expected, but that might be a boon in days to come. I am Darellus Fex, Archbaron of Longacre. Razelago tells me you're the ones who reported our local priestess's... lack of patriotism. As such, I think you might be well suited for putting an end to the threats to Longacre and the rule of law." He pauses for a moment, looking each one of you over in turn. "If you're amenable, of course."

Penelope looks to the others, waiting for one of the more gracious of our company to go first, then shrugs at their hesitation and smiles, deciding she knows a good bet when it comes calling I am yours, my lord, curtsying deeply.

Muziel reluctantly removes his shoes and trods along with the others. "I'm not a halfling, you know. I don't like going around barefoot everywhere." Muziel mutters quietly, though plainly still loud enough for the butler to hear. He follows along upstairs, staying along the rugs and carpets as much as practical.

Once he's upstairs, though, Muziel's sour mood is quickly transformed. The stuffed creatures and alcoves immediately catch his attention. "That's a nice collection!" says Muziel out of the blue. He pipes up again once the Archbaron is done speaking. "Sure, I'd much rather work for you directly than through Razelago. He has kind of a wooden personality, you know." Muziel grins widely.

"I am amenable indeed Lord Archbaron." Nikolai says with a bow, "A pleasure to meet you finally, I am Nikolai Sarini of house Sarini. I am at your service my Lord Archbaron." Nikolai allows a moment for the others to introduce themselves before he adds

"Speaking of patriotism my lord, I have some ideas on how to improve that. I have currently secured a position at the Arch and Lark, a modest local establishment run by a Madam Cembers. She is very patriotic and has a portrait of yours in her lobby. I shall be performing a series of Chelish classics and I would be ever so grateful if you were to attend, and I know Madam Cembers would as well." Diplomacy: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (18) + 11 = 29
