Go'in out thare? Ballar pokes a thumb towards the portcullis and shrugs a shoulder. 'Course thar was some o'those board'd up rooms an tha stairs lead'n up. Scrunching up his face the dwarf tries to think of which one he'd pick. It's a difficult decision since he intends to compare his choice with what the wizard chooses as a kind of intellectual game. As a bead of sweat forms on his brow Ballar opts for the closest choice and with a nod uses his inside voice to praise his selection, Aye, tha'll be tha most logical... Looking up at Keryth Ballar smiles patiently.

With no time constraints, I might favor completion of the exploration here, but we probably have done enough damage in this reality and the longer we wander the more risk we expose ourselves to. Though if we step into another location, it most assuredly will be occupied with dangers that would cause us concern should we feel the need to rest our wayward selves in the near future, Zae monologues to whomever's benefit. Though we will not be able to completely explore this castle as long as the miracle room constrains our unified front. This way seems the only choice. Zae cracks a sly smile.

Keryth turns to Niversal, From your tone and gesture I can only assume I have given thee offense? Perhaps it is due to the expediency with which I can open doors? My method is quite simple. I'm sure you could learn it, with some practice. You see, I just assume that most portals aren't trapped. It is my experience that most aren't. Especially doors in highly trafficked common areas, or ones that lead to, say, the larder for example. If you use a little common sense and intuition, you can save the painstakingly long searches for the doors that are more likely to be protected by dangerous traps and just open the rest straight away.

Having mostly ignored the conversation the other two are having, he chimes in never the less when Ballar speaks last. Leave? To where? If I remember correctly, the portal that brought us here was one way only. We need to find another to leave. It could be in this castle just as easily as anywhere else. Without a compelling reason to leave, I say we stay here and explore for the time being.

Now, we have the boarded up room and areas still below to explore, but I say we go up and see what's there. Do you wish to give my method a try Niversal? Or shall I lead us up there?

Donna matt'r ta me, so longs we keep ta-geth'r. Wond'rn 'round alone's never good. For a moment Ballar finds himself worrying about the group's unity but thankfully his MMA training has succeeded in knocking most of that nonsense out of him. His thoughts soon drift, reflecting on how he first came to be in the 'Dungeon'. He'd been teleported against his will by an evil wizard. Separated from his group in Varisia the dwarf was fortunate enough to come across another friendly party at the time, but had he turned left instead of right...

Keryth leads the way up the stone stairs to the next floor of the castle keep.

The flight of stone stairs is short, rising only ten feet above the first floor and lead to a wooden floor. There is a feeling of closeness on this floor, and it is warmer.

Immediately at the top of the stairs you come to a complicated arrangement of doors, and one side passageway, which jogs away and to the right. There are four doors all within a few feet of each other, beginning with a door on your left, one directly across from the stairs and two doors on the right.

These doors appear to you to be much newer than the doors you encountered on the first floor. It is not reasonable that the doors simply have weathered less, no, these doors have been installed recently. The doors have handles, and sliding bolts to hold them shut from the outside, but no visible locks. None of the bolts are engaged.

The passage on the right goes north forty feet and ends in two more doors. Both are similar to the four doors at the top of the stairs. it is dark here, but some light can be seen under the door on the left and the doors on the right. There is no light under the door directly across from the top of the stairs.

I will generate a map of the second floor tonight

There isn’t anything else in the room. The bugbear was wearing a leather tunic, not actually a functional piece of a set of leather armor, but something that would have provided some minor protection in a brawl. He had a large mace, and a long knife (tucked into his belt).

A small pouch on the belt of this bugbear holds twelve silver pieces and a shiny green rock.

Niversal flips the door open standing behind the door.

male

Niversal swings open the door, which moves making surprisingly little noise.

A pudgy man, you can’t tell how tall he is, exactly, is on his knees, facing the door.

He has a well trimmed beard, and brownish grey hair, which sticks out from underneath a red stocking cap, which folds over on his head. The hat is old and well worn, showing thread bare holes, and a few loose ends

His clothing is simple, and also well worn, but he wears a very new looking leather apron.

He is gathering bits and pieces of broken glass with a whisk broom into a metal dust pan.

When the door bumps the wall as it swings open, it startles the man and he drops the pan scattering glass on the floor

Oh, good hell, you startled me. Eh, who’s there? Oh my,

He sees the rest of the party through the doorway, though Niversal is trying to hide himself.

He scrambles to his feet, still holding the broom in his right hand, and with his left he brushes off some powder on his apron. He is not tall.

Eh, well, I see you made your way into the castle. Please I mean you no harm. My name is Zanlyn Broyer. I don’t know where you came from, or who you are, but I assure you there is nothing of value in this ruin. If the Bugbears gave you any trouble getting this far, I apologize. The man looks past Ballar, well over him actually, and fixes his eyes on Zae. He continues to stare at her as he tries to answer questions. All the while he tries to tidy up the table in front of him, never doing anything suspicious and always keeping his hands in sight.

”Well, I do research on potions, mostly, some extra work in the area of necromancy now and then, but really there is just no money to be made there. Right now I am trying to find a way to combine the magic of two different potions into one concoction such that there isn’t a risk of a serious mishap. As to payments, if I can trust you to accept them and leave me in peace, I can offer you each a hundred gold pieces, in the local currency, and a potion or two for your troubles, unless you’ve come here for some other reason than idle curiosity. Ballar jabs a finger at the various glassware on the table to imply it is up to them as to which potions they would be interested in. 'Course know'n what brews ya got ta off'r would make it simpl'r. The dwarf bobs his head in the other's direction looking for agreement. As fer ya prroposal, Ballar rolls his 'r's hoping to add a little formality and sophistication to the word, ya've got my attention.

"I have no reason to have any misgivings for anything you just said. Not even the part about working with goblinoids, Zae smiles as she enters the room. She continues, If it were not for the quality bonding time we have gained with each other along our journeying, I would have wished our meeting to have occurred sooner so that we could have avoided any misunderstanding that led to your security being thinned out."

I think for what you are offering, I can already think of a concoction or two that would be handy for future endeavors, we at least owe it to you to hear you out regarding your request. Just so long as your request is lawful and reasonable.

Finally someone with some measure of intelligence to speak with. Perhaps he can point us in the direction of a working portal, Keryth thinks to himself as he waits to hear the offer before mentioning the group's real reason for exploring the castle.

The man seems to blush as Zae enters the room, and some of his confidence is challenged.

Well, I don’t, um, really, have many things brewing right now that, um, well, you might want, I suppose, but. Here I have a few healing potions, um, a very interestingly stable concoction of a potion of gaseous form mixed with a potion of invisibility, that one is a bit strange. Hmm, let me see, a few other less useful potions. I call this one, he lifts a metal flask with a wax sealed cork on the top, Sweetwater. You see you don’t actually drink it, but a few drops added to most other potions will render them inert, completely. It’s very valuable. I’ve only been able to make it twice. You can also add it to poisoned or otherwise contaminated water to make it safe to drink. Anyway, there are a few others here, growth, speed, gaseous form. But, I uh, could try to make something for you, if you have something in mind.

As to my need, well, it turns out that this castle was once occupied by a terrible sort of Baron, a truly evil man. He had, as a hobby, I discovered, the tendency to attack the temples of good people all around this land, which ultimately, I think, was his demise, but anyway, where was I, oh yes, and he would attack temples, kill the priest, and then make off with the statues of the gods of those temples, at least the ones he could cart off with the people who worked under him.

Anyway, so upon first arriving here, when I met the bugbears, who were also exploring the ruin for the first time, a few of them ventured down to the lowest level of this place and after hearing terrible noises, agonizing screams and the sounds of crunching bodies, well, I certainly wasn’t going to try to find out what was down there, and the bugbears refuse to explore it at all. But, I’ve learned, from a sage who lives in the city by the lake to the northeast of here, that there might be a few dangerously enchanted relics, statues and who knows what else, in the basement here, maybe even an otherworldly guardian or two. Now, I don’t have a lot of money, but I do have a small collection of spells, in my spell book, a few scrolls at hand, and I can make potions. If you are interested in the challenge, and not afraid of the risks, I would gladly pay you to make at least one trip into the basement and return with information about what is down there, and your opinion on what can be done to clear it out.
