"I'd bet the longer we are exposed to this, the more likely it will have the same effect on us."
Luke_Parry |
Alright, so, behind door #1...
The mists here congeal into a thick and silvery fog that cools the lungs. Arranged throughout this large hall are exhibits on the funerary traditions of several civilizations, along with preserved corpses arrayed in grim stillness. A giant warrior looms from the haze, his arms crossed at his chest, his helm solemn and still. Beyond lie sarcophagi of varied designs, and a few glass cases wherein withered dead are held upright by rods and string; grim exhibits of long-dead citizens whose fallen empires were erased an age past.
A placard above this hall reads “The Honored Dead” in blood-red calligraphy.
As the party slowly works its way through the serried ranks of the long dead, you cannot suppress a shiver from working its way up your spines...
...suddenly, as one, three corpses smash their way free from their display cases: One is a withered, mummified thing from beneath Osirion’s sands bearing a jeweled scarab on its chest among its spiced wrappings, a scarab seer and warrior-priest of an old Pharaonic age. Another is a hulking skeleton, a towering ancestor of the Kellid race who wields a greatclub fashioned from a mammoth’s ivory tusk. The third is a shrunken, emaciated corpse wrapped in rotten silks, and holding a silvered Qadiran scimitar in its bony fists.
Anashka: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (8) + 1 = 9.

Round One
Alie turns toward the closest undead (Proto-Kellid, I think) and fires off magical bolts of energy, striking the undead in the chest with two of them.
Damage 2d4 + 2 ⇒ (4, 1) + 2 = 7
AC 17
HP 22/22
Luke_Parry |
Alie's force bolts slam into the hulking Proto-Kellid warrior's sternum, causing it to arc back its head in a voiceless roar.
In response, the embalmed corpse on the other side of the party rushes forward (charging to O6), and attempts to take a bite out of Talhaearn!
Scarab Seer: 1d20 + 5 + 2 ⇒ (6) + 5 + 2 = 13, for 1d6 + 3 ⇒ (1) + 3 = 4 damage.
Fortunately, its teeth are turned aside by the Half-Elf's armor. Nonetheless, the stench from the beast - a cloying mixture of incense and old, decayed flesh, is distinctly nauseating.
Everyone needs to make a DC 15 Fort save, or become Sickened.
Alie Saechel |
Fortitude 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (5) + 5 = 10
Alie's senses were overwhelmed by the horrific stench, and she was unable to focus on anything but the putrid stench.
Wadi Ahk'kolon |
Fort save 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (3) + 5 = 8
Wadi only has a moment to regret the big breakfast he had earlier before he is overcome by a bout of retching.
Luke_Parry |
Talhaearn nimbly tumbles around to the other side of the mummified corpse, and delivers a vicious blow to its back, causing it to stagger, but not enough to return it to its eternal rest...
The huge, hulking, Proto-Kellid skeleton lurches forward (moving to R8), and takes a swing at Alie with a huge hunk of carved mammoth tusk...
MW Greatclub: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (1) + 7 = 8, for 1d10 + 4 ⇒ (1) + 4 = 5 Bludgeoning damage.
...but the little Gnome nimbly dodges out of the way, and the blow instead cracks some floor tiles.
Meanwhile, the skeleton wrapped in rotting silks, showing an alarming degree of intelligence, moves around Talhaearn to a flanking position (M4), and takes a swing with a silvery scimitar...
Qadiran Warrior of Old: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (6) + 6 = 12, for 1d6 + 5 ⇒ (5) + 5 = 10 Slashing damage.
...which glances off his armor.
Round 1: Alie, Scarab Seer, Talhaearn, Proto-Kellid, Qadiran Warrior, Kovar, Anashka, Wadi, Fog
MAP.
Kovar |
Kovar turns green for a moment but clears his nerves and draws his weapon. Looking to his companion,he gives a feral growl that can only mean one thing, violence. "Attack, rarr." Kovar waves his hand to moves to cut down the scarab.
Fortitude Save Kovar: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (5) + 5 = 10
Fortitude SaveGrey: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (6) + 5 = 11
Move P5, attack: 1d20 + 6 - 2 ⇒ (18) + 6 - 2 = 22 and damage: 1d6 + 6 - 2 ⇒ (4) + 6 - 2 = 8 with his scimitar.
Kovar hopifully can give an order to his CA- HA: 1d20 + 15 - 2 ⇒ (2) + 15 - 2 = 15 to move to P6 and then attack: 1d20 + 4 - 2 ⇒ (3) + 4 - 2 = 5 for damage: 1d6 + 3 - 2 ⇒ (1) + 3 - 2 = 2
Wadi Ahk'kolon |
Wadi is a bit perturbed to see the scarab skeleton next to him. Realizing Anashka can strike at the creature with her glaive already decides to assist her by distracting it.
Move draw club
Attack: Aid Another Anashka +2 to hit (AC 10) 1d20 + 1 + 2 - 2 ⇒ (17) + 1 + 2 - 2 = 18 flank, sickened
Luke_Parry |
Despite feeling incredibly nauseated, Kovar, connecting with Grey on a bestial level, manages to urge his companion forward.
The wolf, however, *really* does not want to bite the creature emitting that gods-awful stench, and so his heart really is not in the blow.
Kovar, nonetheless, manages to deliver a vicious slice with his scimitar, snapping a few ribs and spraying powdered incense and embalming fluid everywhere...
...but the ancient corpse stays on its feet.
Round 1: Alie, Scarab Seer, Talhaearn, Proto-Kellid, Qadiran Warrior, Kovar, Anashka, Wadi, Fog
Anashka Arnaux |
Anashaka steps out on her own and perhaps surprisingly begins to sing a lament for the corrupted dead. She grasps the silver songbird medallion around her neck and a gentle faintly rose scented breeze passes through the room. When the verse comes to a close she grips the glaive and prepares herself for the worst.
5' step to O8
Channel 2d6 ⇒ (2, 2) = 4 DC 16 for 1/2
Damn you dice roller!
Resume two handed grip for potential AoOs.
Wadi acted after me, so if he keeps Aid Another as his action, I will apply it on my next turn.
Wadi Ahk'kolon |
Heh...I guess it will depend on whether the scarab seer is dropped or not. If the creature is still up, Wadi will maintain his AA action.
Luke_Parry |
Anashka holds her holy symbol high, and channels the divine energy of her Patroness...
Scarab Seer: 1d20 + 7 + 2 ⇒ (17) + 7 + 2 = 26.
Proto-Kellid: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (18) + 4 = 22.
Warrior of Old: 1d20 + 3 + 4 ⇒ (4) + 3 + 4 = 11.
The flesh coating the bones of the Osiriani corpse begins to char, and then, suddenly, it disintegrates into a pile of fine ash, leaving only the scarab-shaped medallion that was embedded in its wrappings, behind.
Similarly, the bones of the other two blacken, but neither is dropped by the attack.
Round 1: Alie, Talhaearn, Proto-Kellid, Qadiran Warrior, Kovar, Anashka, Wadi, Fog
Wadi, if you wish to change your action, now is the time ;-)
Wadi to finish-up Round 1, Alie and Talhaearn to begin Round 2.
Alie Saechel |
Alie 5' steps away to P 9, getting out of reach of the undead monster. Not knowing what else to do, she again sends a magic missle crashing into it.
Damage 2d4 + 2 ⇒ (1, 3) + 2 = 6
AC 17
Wadi Ahk'kolon |
Seeing the Osiriani corpse destroyed by Anashka, Wadi nods in thanks and sees his chance to help Talhaearn out. He yells to him, "Step aside!" then sends a fiery ray at it.
Ready action to fire Elemental Ray at it once out of melee. Touch 1d20 + 2 - 2 ⇒ (12) + 2 - 2 = 12; damage 1d6 + 2 ⇒ (6) + 2 = 8 fire.
Luke_Parry |
Wadi yells at Talhaearn to step aside, and prepares to throw a bolt of fire at the scimitar-wielding skeleton...
Fog, with a bestial roar, body slams the other, hulking proto-human skeleton, which cracks a few of its ribs...
Alie steps back, and, focusing inward, throws another pair of force bolts at the same skeleton, shattering its rib-cage, and blowing bone chips across the room.
Round 2: Alie, Talhaearn, Qadiran Warrior, Kovar, Anashka, Wadi, Fog
MAP.
Luke_Parry |
Heeding Wadi's warning, Talhaearn retreats, moving behind the bulwark of flesh provided by the others.
As soon as he does so, Wadi unleashes a torrent of flame, which scorches bone and melts cartilage.
In response, the skeleton charges Wadi (Moving to O6)...
Silver Scimitar: 1d20 + 6 + 2 ⇒ (1) + 6 + 2 = 9, for 1d6 + 5 ⇒ (1) + 5 = 6 Slashing damage.
...but what would have been a solid blow to his shoulder becomes a miss wwhen its ankle twists at the last moment.
Round 2: Alie, Talhaearn, Qadiran Warrior, Kovar, Anashka, Wadi, Fog
Kovar |
Kovar grunts and woots while moving his hands in a circular manor. He is clearly (right? right!) motioning to Grey to get into flanking position. Move to O5 and O7
Kovar Attack: 1d20 + 6 + 2 ⇒ (19) + 6 + 2 = 27 Crit Confirm: 1d20 + 6 + 2 ⇒ (8) + 6 + 2 = 16Damage: 1d6 + 6 ⇒ (5) + 6 = 11 Crit Damage: 1d6 + 6 ⇒ (2) + 6 = 8
Grey Attack: 1d20 + 4 + 2 ⇒ (10) + 4 + 2 = 16 Bite Damage: 1d6 + 3 ⇒ (4) + 3 = 7
Anashka Arnaux |
Anashaka sidesteps around the wolf to get a clear angle. As she lunges in with the blade, she steps on a chunk of shattered rib and when it rolls out from under her feet she ends up nearly falling flat on her face. It isn't graceful, but she manages a recovery before it comes to that.
I have a feeling Kovar just took care of business, but just in case...
Move to N8.
+1 Glaive: (sickened) 1d20 + 6 - 2 ⇒ (1) + 6 - 2 = 5
Damage (sickened) 1d10 + 4 - 2 ⇒ (3) + 4 - 2 = 5
Didn't make any difference last round, but noting my channel DC is actually 17. Forgot to update it when leveling.
Wadi Ahk'kolon |
Wadi slips into a defensive posture, trying to keep the remaining creature from hurting him. He again decides to help the glaive wielder's attacks (seeing as how she needed the help!)
Aid Another Anashka to hit, using Combat expertise 1d20 + 2 - 2 - 1 ⇒ (8) + 2 - 2 - 1 = 7
AC currently 16.
Luke_Parry |
@Kovar: Don't forget that you are still sickened; not that it makes a great deal of difference...
Adopting pack tactics, Kovar and Grey flank the remaining skeleton. Although a scimitar is not really intended to be a good weapon for smashing bone, he finds a weak spot near its neck, almost severing its skull. Incredibly, however, it continues moving...
Grey latches onto the skeleton like a dog with a bone, but is unable to pierce its armor with his teeth...
Anashka moves around to a better position, and takes a swing with her glaive, but the skeleton manages to dodge out of the way...
Round 2: Alie, Wadi, Talhaearn, Qadiran Warrior, Kovar, Anashka, Fog
Fog to finish off Round 2; Alie and Talhaearn to begin Round 3.
Luke_Parry |
Fair enough :-)
Fog moves over to Alie, pats her on the head in a congratulatory fashion, and then rubs his cheek against her in a friendly manner.
Round 3: Alie, Wadi, Talhaearn, Qadiran Warrior, Kovar, Anashka, Fog
MAP.
Alie Saechel |
Alie holds her action, waiting to see if the others surrounding the skeleton are able to bring it down.
Delay until the end of the round.
Talhaearn |
"Once....just once I'd like to walk into this place and not be ambushed by undead. Well let's see what makes these things tick."
Searching the room and bodies, such as they are...
Perception: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (6) + 12 = 18
I suppose I should keep an eye out for traps as well.
Trapfinding: 1d20 + 13 ⇒ (17) + 13 = 30
Luke_Parry |
Amongst the ashes of the Osiriani corpse, you find a jewel-encrusted gold scarab.
The Proto-Kellid skeleton has a MW Greatclub, carved from mammoth ivory.
On the silk-wrapped skeleton, you find a breastplate, a heavy steel shield, and an alchemical silver scimitar.
Additionally, clutched in the hands of one of the exhibits that did *not* animate (a naturally-mummified corpse, still enshrouded in the peat which preserved it) is MW bone-handled kukri, its blade carved from jade.
Assuming that Detect Magic is eventually cast...
The bejeweled scarab and the scimitar radiate magic.
I will take Spellcraft and Knowledge(History) rolls at this point.
EDIT: As in, two Spellcraft rolls, one for each item, and a separate Knowledge(History) roll.
Alie Saechell |
Spellcraft 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (1) + 5 = 6
Spellcraft 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (14) + 5 = 19
Ill roll percentile dice to see which roll is for what item. if about fifty, it'll be for the scarab. If under fifty, the scimitar is the first roll. Edit that means the first roll is for the weapon, the second for the scarab.
Percentile 1d100 ⇒ 22
Wadi Ahk'kolon |
Spellcraft (scarab) 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (3) + 7 = 10
Spellcraft (scimitar) 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (10) + 7 = 17
Knowledge (History) 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (17) + 3 = 20
Luke_Parry |
Alie Saechel |
"Well, I can't figure these things out. They are magical, though. Someone brave could always throw the scarab on, but it might be cursed or evil. Seems like Fog has found a new toy," Alie shrugs as she points to the warrior in the corner.
Wadi Ahk'kolon |
Wadi grimaces at the displays of the proto-ape members of the party before he glances at the bog mummy remains. "I think that bog mummy was a former member of the Jambala Jaeg tribe — a people who once vehemently opposed Angazhan’s followers in the Mwangi Expanse and were wiped out for their opposition." He shrugs. "If anyone cares about such stuff. Anyway I think it is time to move on here." He looks over to the eastern part of the room. "Aren't there some offices over there?"
Fog Darksmiter |
Fog quickly gets tired of swinging the club at air, and instead decides to carry it alongside his shield while he wanders around sniffing, and looking and poking at things in the direction Wadi was looking.
Fog wanders off towards the offices "searching" but rather aimlessly
Luke_Parry |
At Alie's suggestion, the group moves forward to the Offices.
The door to this chamber was once a pane of expensive frosted glass, which now lies in broken shards on the floor. Within, several desks lie overturned, papers in disarray, and chairs smashed to kindling. A sturdy steel cabinet sits against the back wall, its doors much battered and dented. The mist here roils near the floor and ceiling, creating a strange patch of visibility stretching from knee-height to a few feet overhead. The smoky tendrils flow up and down the walls unnaturally and savage visages swirl to life, fanged mouths agape, before dissolving into mist once more.
Stealth: 1d20 + 23 ⇒ (4) + 23 = 27.
Stealth: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (19) + 12 = 31.
Stealth: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (6) + 12 = 18.
I will give people a chance to react ;-)
