OK...now I'm scared.
Thanks for having me in this group...when I finished the First Steps series a few months ago I began searching desperately for another PFS PbP game. I stumbled upon your group while searching and was quite impressed to see an ongoing group existed and jelous that I was not a part of it! So last week when the chance to join you came up I jumped at it...not quite quickly enough for the Druid who beat me to the punch but I'm still pleased that I got the second spot!
I'm a fairly active poster and I check my games at least 3 to 5 times a day; sometimes more. I currently have two other active PFS characters, both 1st level; but Talhaearn (or Tal for short) is my favorite. (Although my Inquisitor is a very close second.) Even though Rogues are considered underpowered I have always enjoyed playing them (even back when they were called "Thieves").
When I'm not playing RPGs on line I'm an avid hiker and trail biker and I live in the Northeasten United States with my wife & dog. I've been a middle school counselor for the past 16 years or so and will be headed back to work next week after a good, long summer vacation!
...and needless to say I'm looking forward to being a part of this group. Tal has a bit of shopping to do before we start, but I should have my stat block ready to go in a day or so.
Alie Saechel |
Welcome Tal! Glad to have some new blood in our group. Just waiting for the sheets to be emailed from the DM, and then a little bit of shopping/leveling for Alie and I'll be ready to rock and roll.
Wadi Ahk'kolon |
Welcome aboard Tal...always glad to have another body between the nasty monsters and the tasty sorcerer with the squishy middle, he he.

I have played Among the Dead with my 5th level fighter. Not a problem though. I'd be fine sitting in with a pregen without credit for a session.
The wand of infernal healing Luke mentions is one of those items that are less common in regular groups but tons of arcane casters have them in PFS. Flavor wise it is an arcane spell taught by the faithful of Asmodeus and involves devil's blood and unholy water in the casting. Mechanics wise is is basically the Lesser Vigor spell from the latter days of 3.5. Target gets fast healing 1 for 10 rounds. So after a fight 1 charge heals 10 hps every time. It also makes the target detect as Evil while they are healing. As Wadi is from Cheliax it would be more in character for him to have one than for Alie, but there is nothing preventing her from also taking one if she wanted to do so.
Alie is going to get entangle at third level which is a big deal in terrain where she can use it. Everyone else should keep that in mind and be prepared with ranged options. If she can lock a group of enemies down for a few rounds you can pick them off while they try to get out. It has a 50' radius so they arent likely to be getting out in one round. As far as other spells I don't know. Magic missile will scale if you take it as a real spell rather than a wand, but you also might be tempted to blow through all of your spells trying to drop a single critter with it when you need it. I don't know if there is any clear winner. Just make sure it is something that you can see casting often and probably something that is not mind affecting so that you diversify. Grease, Enlarge person, Shocking grasp, Protection from Evil (to suppress mental domination on your front liners), Disguise self (if you can see Alie getting some use out of dealing with enemy npcs while in disguise in conjunction with bluff and diplomacy or perhaps charm person). Or magic missile. It is solid and dependable. Or none of the above. Whatever fits your theme.
Mage armor makes a good wand because it lasts an hour....
Got my sheet, Luke. Thanks a bunch!
Now, like I said earlier, this is my only PFS character, so leveling isn't terribly easy for me. A couple questions:
OK, let's say I want to purchase the wand of Mage Armor. It costs me 2 Prestige Points, correct?
And if I want to pick up a Cloak of Resistance +1, I can simply buy it, like I do for non PFS characters with just an expenditure of cash, correct?
ithuriel |
Wand yes. You can get any legal piece of equipment up to 750 gp value for 2 prestige. 1st level wands fit in that range.
Cloak of Resistance is different. It isn't on the list of things that are always available and it is too expensive for a prestige point purchase so you consult the chart for fame and item purchases (page 26 in the guide.)
If you have:
0-4 Fame - Only regular gear. Items that are always available are exceptions (like a +1 enhancement on a sword or armor)
5-8 Fame - You can buy anything worth 500 gp or less.
9-12 Fame - You can buy anything worth 1,500 gp or less.
--------------------
There is one more exception. If it was on a chronicle sheet you have access to purchase it even if you wouldn't normally be able to do so. As far as I can tell you don't have access to one on any chronicle sheets yet.
Luke_Parry |
You can get a single item, worth up to 750gp, by spending 2PP.
Conveniently, that is exactly the cost of a Wand of a 1st level spell :-)
For the purchase of items like a Cloak of Resistance+1, you need to have sufficient 'Fame' (i.e. The maximum prestige that you have accumulated of the course of your adventuring career) in order to be able to buy it (i.e. 'Fame' represents how much 'pull' you have with the Society quartermasters).
The only exception to this, is if you find an item on a chronicle sheet, in which case it is always available, regardless of your 'Fame'.
However, since I know that you have succeeded at all your faction missions, and that you are know 3rd level, I also know that you have enough 'Fame' to purchase the aforementioned cloak ;-)
I apologise for the rather wordy response; I just wanted to try to be as accurate as possible...
EDIT: Ninja'ed by Ithuriel :-P
Alie Saechel |
Is there anywhere on my sheet that I should quantify the Fame? How many fame points should I have now?
I will put on my sheet that I expended 2 PP for the wand of mage armor, and spent 1000 gp for a magic cloak, then. After that, I think Alie is ready to go as I just leveled her.
Luke_Parry |
The 'Fame' mechanic was not really introduced until Season 3 (leastways, the chronicle sheets did not have a separate box for it until then).
On the old sheets, I tend to track it with a A "/" B in the prestige box, where A = the total prestige I have ever accumulated, whilst B = my current prestige.
I hope that that helps :-)
Wadi Ahk'kolon |
Wadi is leveled to 3rd. Profile is updated.
A quick note: Since Wadi already knows Burning Hands as a spell, he is NOT eligible for a bonus Bloodline spell until he can swap out a known spell for it. He will be able to that when he gains 4th level. (Let me know if this was errata'd, guys)
Also he purchased a wand of Infernal Healing. Finally, he would like to purchase the Potion of Cure Moderate Wounds from the loot recovered list. Let me know if anyone else wants to purchase it.
Montage post is coming...

Now seems a good time to do some housekeeping.....
Looking at the reported sessions list for Fog I have:
Before the dawn Pt1
Before the dawn Pt2
Slave Pits of Absolom
Among the Living.
I also have a chronicle for The Palid Plague, the first one we did.
I have Chronicles for all of those, except BtD Pt2....
So, Fog has 5 XP now, 10 prestige, and a *lot* of gold.
Shopping time!
Nevynxxx |
Ok, Fog's shopping. Sell Armour. Buy MW Scale Mail. (Total 175gp)
Use Prestige to acquire a wand of mage armour, and one of Cure Light Wounds (Total 4 prestige). Buy two scrolls of cure moderate wounds (available from Before the dawn Part 1 Chronicle) (total 300GP).
Profile page updated with all that, and places to track it.
It says a lot about this game that I need a spreadsheet to track income and expenditure, and available purchases!
Luke_Parry |
Mage Armor is actually 'creature touched', so it *can* be cast on him - it is Shield that is a 'personal' spell.
Having said that, I agree with Ithuriel that Mage Armor does not stack with Fog's regular armor.
@Ithuriel: you can include a 'montage' post for Magda, to represent what she does over the month / where she goes...
Nevynxxx |
Gah! I also blame children, and their constant questions!
I'll go hunt out something more suitable.
Ok, changed the purchase to shield of faith, since it's a cleric spell, it is usable! Deflection bonus, so stacks with normal armour etc Range is creature touched too, so useful even when Ith is running things and Magda isn't around ;)
ithuriel |
I have Chronicles for all of those, except BtD Pt2....
I'm beginning to think you don't WANT that chronicle sheet for some reason. ;) It is still in my sent folder from where I mailed it out in October of last year to both of your email addresses. Forwarded to both again this morning. Maybe the spam filter got it so check there if you don't see it.
ithuriel |
In the process of looking for Fog's sheet I pulled up some older ones I have emailed you guys and was shocked as how low quality they were. The original scans are 1 MB. I shrink them down to 50% to make them ~400-500 kb which I thought would still be fine if you print them full page size. Apparently yahoo has been shrinking them down to 69 kb which is pretty damn low quality. Has this been the case throughout?
The one Luke sent me is fine at 583 kb. I'm wondering if it is just a case of the file saved in my sent folder being reduced size for some reason? Or maybe a setting that I've missed to prevent them from shrinking the file size.
ithuriel |
@Fog> Ok so after I was messing with you and we realized it was part one you needed I found out I don't have any of the originals from part one anymore. They were on a laptop that has died since then. I filled you out a new one.
Here is a dropbox link to the full size file: https://dl.dropbox.com/u/28534393/2-01%20Fog.jpg
Nevynxxx |
All the JPG ones I have seem to be around the 400Kb mark. There's a pdf a bit bigger.
Got that one now, and saved into my dropbox folder. I'd seriously suggest just emailing the links out like that. People can get them as they like then.
Fog Darksmiter |
Hmmmm, I've been thinking this bit with Hustavan was a bit familiar. It would appear that I played this at a convention way back in 2010.....
So, Fog wont be getting a chronicle for this, and it's debatable if he should really carry on......
I am getting married today, and will probably not have internet access again now until sometime on Sunday, then next week will be spotty too.
So, feel free to DM Fog in either direction while I'm not around!
Luke_Parry |
Heh. Well, it is your prerogative to make that comment - it would be bad taste for me to say it ;-)
It does mean that I will have to cast around for another module to run to try and get Fog up to 3rd level, so I can ran the final part of this 'arc'.
I am sure that I can think of something, though :-)
I have no issue with Fog continuing on this adventure, as I gather you did not play it with him - just try to keep OOC knowledge out of the IC thread ;-)

This scenario has without a doubt the worst faction Mission I ever ever seen, now that I think about it. If the fire trap goes off, it automatically gets the painting Alie was trying to recover. No chance to do anything about it, just an auto fail, no matter who sets the trap off. That's terrible.
I haven't played any PFS other than with you all and one other game I just started, but is it commonplace for missions success or failure to be that random?
