On the ship: With nothing much to do on the ship ride over, Dante spends a lot of his time chronicling what happened...and debating on whether to tell the others about the blade. He didn't even know its name yet so he decided to hold off until there was something to tell. He does approach Luca having noticed certain changes. "Evening. Nice to see you speaking more. And your companion seems to have changed. A good sign I hope. Do you think you could teach me the language? Could be useful in certain situations?"

Build up for level 4. Gonna take a +1 to int and take Aklo as a language.

With no hesitation at all, Luca moved around to Tyrus' other side and peeked out, clearly hiding from Dante. "You... want to know more about those things?" she asked, glad her Eidolon wasn't here at the moment. "...Are you still sane?" She seemed honestly worried - as far as she was concerned, knowing more about such beings could only be bad, and anybody who wanted to know their language, to talk and communicate and make deals...

No. Nonononononono. Please, NO.

Dante cocks his head to the side but doesn't get closer. "You don't? You've said you can't get rid of it so why not learn more about it? I have never read or heard of anything like it before, so yes, I am curious. The first step is communication." He pauses as he thinks a bit. "And if you plan to ever free yourself, your going to need to know what it is. Aren't you curious too Tyrus?"

Dante:

While speaking to the sword, you have the sudden remembrance that a great-great-uncle founded a branch of the Florence school in Rivettia - but you don't recall exactly where.

Eight fellow prisoners came ashore with you, including Vincent - but not including Yllaine and Lara, who remain on the island. The other seven are the Kulmaran crew who were already on the island when you got there.

The young mason named Vincent wastes no time when you splash ashore. He shoulders the pack that had been returned to him, and starts off down the beach. "If I hurry, I can find the local mason's guildhouse by nightfall. Bloody, ten-times-damned pirates. If I've lost my journeyman position because of this whole mess, I'll..." he begins, but apparently cannot find threats dire enough to finish his sentence. He merely trails off and starts walking.

Misha, the Kulmaran captain, barks at her people in their language, and sets off in the same direction as Vincent.

Kulmaran (only read if you speak the language):

"Come on, laddos. It'll be a devil's path to get back home, but not much else to do."

Nnnnnope. Don't got that language. XD

Luca just stared at Dante, then shook her head. "They don't care about what you want." she said quietly. "Don't think of them as people, that you can reason with if you just come to a mutual understanding. They don't think like we do, they don't judge things in the same way, they don't have morals as we understand them. You can't use them for your own goals, or command and control them like puppets. To them, you're just something to tally up as being useful or threatening to their goals, like an insect crawling underfoot. If they help, it's only because they want to do so, and they'll turn on you the moment they have reason to. The only people who want more of them in this world are the ignorant and the stupid."

She... definitely had feelings on this matter.

"See, learning already," he says smiling. "Sounds just like what I read about dealing with outsiders. And what better way to be useful than learning their language at least? Look I am not interested in using or being used, in bring more or sending them home, in controlling or anything else. To not know would be stupid and ignorant. If you don't teach me I will learn myself or try talking to it." It doesn't seem like he can be dissuaded.

Me neither.

On land:"I might know a place we can go. But lets at least get settled in first. An inn and a nice bath sounds good." Dante is a little apprehensive about the "place" he is referring too but smiles anyway. He had never been to the other schools. Maybe they weren't so bad. Maybe they were worse.

"Yes. Hmmm - when I was young I had a... a gift for Necromancy. But I was afraid to embrace it. I worried it might turn me, well, evil. I avoided learning anything about Necromancy. I only started learning about it recently. Now I realise it might be possible to use it to save lives, as well as take them."
"Knowledge is not evil. People are evil - and whatever those things of yours are as well, Luca."
"Yes, I'm curious. But I also respect Luca's fear. I think you taught someone - or knew someone who knew the language already - didn't you, Luca."

Luca looked at Tytus. "Not evil..." she muttered, diverting her gaze to the side. The creatures didn't have the kind of morality. They were frightening, dangerous, powerful, and had no qualms about killing anything or anyone they objected to... but calling them evil suggested a sort of inherent negative bent they actually didn't have. "I didn't learn the language, either. They forced it into my head... just like they did with Dwarven."

"Hmm, so its like Tongues. You can understand and speak but its being translated by magic. You have no actual understanding. Well if it hadn't taught you dwarven then we probably wouldn't have saved Lianna. At least its actions have been beneficial so far. It hasn't attacked anyone unless they threatened you. Based on actions alone it has been very beneficial." Dante leaves that as something to think and leaves off there.

"Based on thine memories, tis a true statement. If it truly is a separate being."

"What does that mean. And you can see my memories?"

"Tis unimportant. My meaning is that maybe she has more control than she thinks. All mortals seek to protect themselves and when she needed the knowledge it provided. A subconscious manifestation mayhaps? A powerful ally. The fat one you should be weary around. Necromancy corrupts no matter the intent."

Dante was a little disconcerted by the memory sharing but it made some valid points. Left something to think about.

Outsider

Heh heh. "tis unimportant. And you should really see a therapist..."

Also, Tyrus - your character made this remark in a thought, not dialogue, but I wanted to make sure you the player knew that the money you have should be sufficient for far more than one week. O_o Though maybe Tyrus is just used to easier living!

Tyrus looks at Luca with shock, then cumbersomely kneels, bringing himself to Luca's level.
"That's awful Luca. I always forsook the arts of Enchantment, they seemed as morally reprehensible as necromancy. Some of the stories I've heard about people who have been subject to mental invasion, or prolonged mental contact, were just terrible. One of my lecturers when I was a student talked about his experience being compelled... He said 'the worst of it was that once you heard a voice in your head, you could never really know what was you, and what was them'. You must have been a very brave girl to stay as sane as you are."

"They don't need to change my mind. They just control it." Luca said quietly. In fact, it was quite normal for her to black out when her powers were being used. The things spoke using her voice, gestured with her hands, and cast with her powers, all whether she wanted it to happen or not, and her knuckles were white as she clenched her fists.

Still, she couldn't simply hide in a cave somewhere and do absolutely nothing - there was a very real chance that they'd simply walk her body back to civilization. "Should we, um, start heading into town? We can't just stand here forever."

"I had my reservations," Dante returns thoughtfully.

"Unacceptable. Let me speak with this creature."

"Now hold on. She might not have any power without it. It has been very helpful. Or it might make things worse," Dante warned.

"Unacceptable. Let me speak with this creature."

Dante sighs and walks off to find Fluffy. He wasn't even sure this was going to work. It spoke a different language. The blade wasn't fully awake. What did it hope to accomplish?

I will let either Luca or DM to decide if this will even work.

What the blade intends to say: "Explain thine actions. Why doth thou control the girl's thoughts and actions? She seems an upstanding and honorable person capable of making her own decisions with the power bestowed upon her by the gods. Thou needst not interfere so absolutely. Thou aren't a duo, comrades, companions, compatriots. Not master and slave, in either direction. Going to assume Dante would agree to head into the city.

Between the later start and Tyrus' slower pace, the group of three fall well behind the others. By the time they reach the city outskirts (a short time after noon), their fellow former-prisoners are nowhere in sight, though they reach a proper road about halfway and there are other travellers about.

Gemny has neither walls nor controlled entry, and slowly buildings become more and more common until you find yourself truly within the city. You enter a smallish market square, with men and women hawking various kinds of goods to passers-by. The people around you are dressed simply, for the most part, and some of them give you strange glances, dressed as you are in the dirty, torn remnants of richer clothing.

At least, I think you guys were in nicer clothing when we began. If anyone was wearing simple clothing let me know.

Tyrus, completely over this, accosts a merchant selling some sort of food.

Dante had never been far outside his home. He didn't not have the street smarts to pick the best inn's, the cheapest prices, or avoid the seedier spots. But he doubted his companions did either. Learn as they go he guessed. First things first though. As they enter the city he casts a spell to at least clean their clothing. The damage was still there but the grime of travel was gone.

Retcon... small changes, so I'll allow it!

Tyrus:

By the look of the clothing and the state of the buildings around you, you'd say you're in a fairly typical working section of the city. Simple craftspeople, day laborers, fishers, etc. Not the slums, but not too much better.

Before they enter the city proper, Tyrus and Dante use their magic to clean and fix their clothing as best they can. Such simple magics cannot entirely erase the wear of time and sea, but it goes a long way to making them look less like refugees.

Tyrus approaches one cart, where a man and woman are calling to the populace with shouts of "Nutcakes, two for a penny!" Their food lays under clean linen covers, and the smell of an Obanese staple - simple sweetened bread filled with nuts - wafts from them.

Not going to worry about such small amounts of money until/unless you guys get much more destitute.

Tyrus buys three cakes and asks about lodging. The man and woman exchange the briefest of glances and by some silent agreement he continues to hawk their product while she speaks to Tyrus.

The group inevitably looks at each other to see what they think about the inn. Dante's input is to shrug. The name didn't lend too much confidence but a books title rarely did the contents justice. You trudge along the city streets, which are fortunately kept less dusty by the ever-present humidity of the region. People bustle by, paying you little heed. After several minutes, you come to the sign of the Sinning squid. Walking through the door you are greeted by a somewhat dimly-lit and worn interior, but it at least seems somewhat clean and is free of the vomit-and-urine smell that accompanies truly dingy taverns. A handful of people are drinking and eating at the benches. A man looks up from pouring ale into one patron's tankard as you enter.

This seems like a cheaper place than I'm used to. Did we look so poor? Are prices so expensive? Then again, we've less than a gold between us. I suppose I need to stop being such a snob

"I understand you rent rooms?" he asks, continuing in a questioning tone "I'm interested in renting? How much do you charge?"

Outsider

"Aye, we've rooms. A silver a night, and you'll get bread in the morning and a hot supper and ale in the evening too." Kordan looks at the others. "If you need to share a room that's fine, no extra charge, but you'll need to pay for food."

If you like you can barter on the price. General rule is the more you're spending up front the more of a discount you can get - so if you want to pay for a room for a week or longer you'll get a better deal than paying separately each day. If you want to barter, state your offer and the terms and roll a diplomacy check. Kordan will oppose with a dip check of his own.

GMPC Tyrus. The Game must go on!

Tyrus attempts to haggle with the barkeep. The elderly man seems to think that staying in an inn for a week would not be the worst thing in the world, and tries to get a good price on a room for that length of time.

Tyrus Diplomacy: 1d20 - 1 ⇒ (19) - 1 = 18
Kordan Diplomacy: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (19) + 5 = 24

Currently my rule is to do a simple percent increase or decrease based on the rolls. If you win a haggle contest by 5 points, you get 5% discount (with whatever amounts of rounding to make the numbers easy) and vice versa.

Despite his towering intelligence, Tyrus proves unable to follow all the specifics of the deal he works out with the innkeeper - but he feels at the end as if he might have been gamed a bit. Still, the idea of a bed and food for a few nights comforts any feelings of victimhood.

1 silver for room + 1 silver for additional meals for two people * seven days = 14 silver, + 6% for haggle rolls (rounding) = 15 silver. This is Kordan's price, but you don't necessarily have to accept it.

Tyrus accepts the offer - conditional on seeing the room - and when he sees it isn't an outright vermin infested filthy mess agrees to the price, and even offers 8 silver as bond.

He stays with Luca and Dante to 'settle in'. Once alone he sets Torble to bug hunting, and starts talking.

"I hope you don't mind that I took the lead. Fifteen silver a week is a pittance - I used to spend that much on a part time maid! We must have gotten a family discount - I didn't want to risk losing it. I think a week will give us a chance to find our feet, and we'll have a base to work from."

"It seems the other prisoners have abandoned us. I'll need to seek out apothecaries and chirurgeons here, see if they've any ideas for a cure. Perhaps I could even get a job so we can expand our all-too-meagre savings."

"I'll also see if there are any libraries, academies or practitioners here. If there are I'll make contact and see if I can get any clues as to what to do. If there are then there's a high likelihood I might be able to sell them some spells. If not, then there's a niche to be filled."

Luca quietly scuffed a foot against the floor, pondering her options. Tyrus... probably wasn't very good with money. She could try selling calligraphy, and hope it was enough to get by - she'd need to really practice hard before it would be good enough to make a true living off of, though. At least the Mensha could be sold (best to keep that as a reserve source of funds, though) - and they still had that bracelet if need be.

Honestly, she had no real choice except to follow where the adults went - she could always strike out on her own if she really had to, and it wouldn't be the first time, but... well, she was just a kid. "...This place looks too small to have a real school." she said quietly. You have a pretty detailed knowledge of the geography of this part of the world, and know that Gemny is the second-largest city in Rivettia. It is a relatively young city, but for size it easily compares with most other cities in the world. There will certainly be learned wizards here, and temples, and healers and all sorts of other people/services.

The only nearby city that is larger is the capital, Aldunvar, which is on the eastern coast some ways to the north. How long it takes to get there depends on the travel arrangements - it would only be three to five days by ship (depending on the ship and the winds) but it might take a couple of weeks by land.

Know(Local) and (Arcana) to see if you know of famous wizards

You know that there are no established wizardly orders in Rivettia, but there are several independent magicians of various sorts based in the country. You can think of one who used to live in Gemny when you heard about her: a half-elf Kadeshi woman named Naeth. You vaguely recall that she studies the nearby woodlands, a curious mix of tropical jungle and alpine forest.

What are we trying to cure? I think I missed that.

Also, how far away is Aldunvar?

'I couldn't exactly follow along that well either but I think you got played by a wily old man. Still we have the funds, for now," he says shrugging in indifference. "We could rest here for a little while but I wouldn't mind heading to Aldunvar. I have...family there. I have never met them but I know some live there." Based on the pause there is something more he is not saying about his family. Even after deciding it was best to inform them he lost confidence in the end. Didn't even tell them about the sword either. It didn't say anyting but he could feel it shaking its head, hilt, whatever.

Tyrus stands and faces the others, hands behind his back, and begins to talk in a clear voice.
"Gemny. Gemny is the second largest city in Rivettia. Founded relatively recently, it is a class 1 city... It is a four day trip from Gemny to Aldunvar by ship."
He comes out of the pose "Sorry, didn't mean to lecture you. I was recalling... anyway. There are no established orders of wizardry in Rivettia, but there a number of independentens. There must be wizards here... in fact I remember I we had a faculty member from Gemny once. She studied under... It was a half-elf... Naeth. Yes, she had an interesting treatise on the nearby woodlands and their disparate tropical jungle/alpine forest composition that Naeth had written."

"If you wish to go to Aldunvar, Dante, I'm sure we can make that happen. Do you know your family there well?"

Luca glanced up at Dante, but if he wasn't going to elaborate about his family, she wasn't going to ask - she knew all too well how bad family troubles could turn out, and had no intention of trying to open those wounds for anyone else. "A big city... is probably better..." she said quietly. More people... more opportunities to hide and be forgotten as she tried to find some way to be truly rid of the... the things.

"A great uncle I've only heard of in name. So no," he says waving it aside as if it didn't matter much. "Pretty sure they will be there for a while."

"Thine life is finite. Mine is not. Why dally?"

"Dally isn't used anymore," was his only argument.

"Perhaps you could send him a letter - unless you're hoping turning up in person by surprise might make you harder to turn away?"

"So - there's a fair part of the day left. Shall we make our next priority the bath house, or looking for practitioners, shopping, or something else?"

Luca nodded at Dante's words. For various reasons, she liked being clean... and there was a lot of dirt to scrub off before she'd be happy with the way she looked.

"Very well. Bath it is. Seems a shame to change into the same clothes. Perhaps we could look for a change of clothes first?"
Happy to buy a change of clothes. Also happy to go the bath route. Naive as he may be, Tyrus is not leaving anything of value unguarded here while they have a bath. If needs be he'll take first "watch", though a sufficiently secure establishment might convince him to merely use Torble as a guard.

Following Kordan's directions, you find the public bathhouse at the bottom of a hill. The buildings in the neighborhood seem a bit more affluent. Too, the roads are wider and at least partially gravelled. The bathhouse itself is just about identical to any such building you might find back home, with several larger communal chambers with waters of varying temperatures, as well as a pair of smaller, gender-segregated chambers for those who wish more privacy for one reason or another. As is traditional, the use of the building is technically free, though a collection box stands outside for those who wish to contribute an extra bit of coin to civic maintenance. The crowd whom use the house is varied, and three more people - even mis-matched as you are - draw no comment or obvious attention.

At least one of the roads leading away from the bathhouse is cobbled, and seems to be lined by shops of various kinds. You can tell that the more affluent parts of the city seem to lie in that direction - northerly and somewhat uphill.

Luca wasted little time in heading for one of the small, private chambers - for various reasons, she didn't like being out in public... especially because after she was inside, she called up her Eidolon and spent a fair bit of time cleaning it as well. Only when she was finally satisfied at their overall cleanliness did she dismiss her companion, get dressed again, and exit the room - dropping a few coppers into the collection box when she was done.

This... felt so much better.

Dante drops 5 silver into the donation box as he walks in. He figured that would be appropriate for the visit. He then goes into one of the large baths only long enough to be assaulted by the naked form of several older gentlemen. He turns and heads for one of the smaller, private ones even if it wasn't as hot as the others. That was one sight he didn't need to see. Thankfully the rest of the bath passed without indecent and with much sighing in contentment.

"Might I partake of the soothing waters?"

"What? But your a sword. You can't feel right?"

"I can still see and hear all that transpires around me. Maybe this time shall be different. Maybe I can hear the water lapping upon the metal or sense the increase in temperature."

"Um...okay." Dante sits the blade in the water with the hilt resting on the edge of the bath like it was just another customer.

"..."

"...Alas. Nothing."

Dante sinks below the water blowing bubbles in frustration.

I can't think of anything else to do today. Not until Aldunvar if we go there.

Tyrus despoits his clothes, money and familiar in one of the secure boxes, and moves to one of the large baths. He nods to several other older gentlemen as he walks his enormous bulk into the water, causing it to slop dangerously over the edge.

Carefully he checks over his body. The stretch marks where his skin so recently grew are starting to fade thanks to the regular application of an ointment of his own devising. The leech marks have all but gone, and he makes a mental note to pick up some more leeches.

Let's see... he thinks to himself
First - check for a cure with apothecaries and chirurgeons. Look out for job opportunities
Second - seek out other wizards and suggest trading spells.
Third - if there's money, look for a healing kit, better supplies, or better alchemical tools.

Tyrus:

1) Thus far your disease is 100% RP, and so I shall leave any such interactions to you unless you want me to give the disease mechanical significance in the game.
2) Seeking out wizards is easy enough, but trading spells is a delicate subject and would require RP and rolling.
3) I can easily list expected costs of these things, and will do so in the discussion thread.

It should be noted in the following that when asked about wizards most laypeople will include any non-divine magic users, and sometimes even get the two mixed up. So the following list can be more accurately summarized as "any arcane people Kordan has heard of." Furthermore, extremely low-level (think, level 1) magic users are not uncommon, and so anybody of note will be more advanced.

Tyrus makes a few inquiries with Kordan about wizards to be found in the city, and learns a few names.

- One of the other guests at Kordan's inn is a magician of some sort, he says, but he has to ask before he can promise to introduce you.
- The most famous wizard in Gemny is of course the local Prince's court magicians: Lord Zandrias and Lady Helene. Zandrias has distinguished himself against many enemies of Rivettia and only a month ago returned from a campaign against marauding giants from the mountains. Helene is more mysterious, but rumor has it she can predict the future.
- At the other end of the spectrum is Master Patchwell, an herbalist and magician who has been the local neighbourhood healer for ages.
- There's a woman employed by the local masons who aids in construction. Kordan forgets her name but is certain he heard that she uses magic.
- An antiques dealer in the Whitestone district The rich part of town is supposedly a rather powerful magician. Rumor has it that he is close with Lord Zandrias himself!
- At the last moment, Kordan remembers Agnes, a Drecnan woman who lives amongst the warehouses by the main wharf. He knows she has magic but forgets what she does for a living.
