Zirt pushes for an immediate departure for the tower; she doesn't have anything that she'd want to leave at an inn. Everything she's carrying, she might need.

"Well, I don't think we have to rent a place now. Let's go for a walk; it's a nice enough day." Dovak says, as he begins to head in the direction indicated by the people the group asked about the towers.

"By Adadar! That's, that's robbery! Why I don't make that much in a month!"

Incensed at the rates, shoulders her pack and turns to the others, "much as I would rather not go about so obviously a newcomer, I'm thinking we take our time through the city and hope for more affordable accommodations on the outskirts."

Hiram's nose was still buried in his book, as he walked behind the others. "Chances aren't good Ms. al'Vysin. I still have some of the funds our benefactor provided us. If need be, I can cover our rent for this journey." He suddenly snapped the book closed.

"Speaking of which, does anyone think it wise to go ask the Pathfinders about Andrax? I know they wish to lay claim to his research as well but we might be able to suss out some useful information from them."

Zirt listens quietly, her eyes still taking in her surroundings, but her ears attentive. "I think they might be able to help! Mr. Zeke said that Mr. d'Aponte turned on them, so they'd want to help, I think, right? They might even have a place you could keep your stuff, Ms. Cyniq!"

Zirt will go along with the others, either to the tower or to the Pathfinder lodge...

The party hears of a small inn on the outskirts, that charges 1 cp/person a night for the common room. You were told to watch out for the bedbugs, lice, and other vermin. You notice the sun is getting higher in the sky and can begin to smell the food of noonday meals starting to be prepared.

Which way is the party headed?

Male Aasimar Paladin (Sacred Servant) 1 > HP 13/13, 12/13 NL; AC 16 (T11/F15); F:+4,R:+1,W:+0; Init+1; Perc-2)<

If others are coming along, Dovak was headed for the tower; but he's not going alone. If at least 2 others go to the Pathfinder lodge, Dovak will follow there. If only one character goes to the lodge, and one character goes with Dovak, he'll continue to head to the tower (with the third person going to the inn/going shopping/who knows).

Zirt will push for heading straight to the tower.

With her backpack riding high on her back, Cyniq synches down teh straps and follow Zirt. "I hope you know where you are going..."

"We should check the library too!"

Absalom's a bit further south than Magnimar, enough of a climate change to warrant us looking for clothes?

I wouldn't worry about it. Just waiting on Hiram for a consensus.

Male Human Fighter (Tactician 17/Champion 10) [ HP 340/340 | AC 38 Tch 26 FF 33 | Fort +25 Ref +19 Will +21 | CMD 47 | Init +22 Perc +31 | Effects: ]

Zirt frowns, looking from one member of the group to another. "Well, that's true... we wouldn't want to miss something, just because we were in a rush. Mr. Hiram, you think we should go straight to the Pathfinder lodge? What if they want to send someone along or something to make sure they get the journal? I think we should stick together..."

She looks around at everyone, her facial expression one of puzzled sorrow. How do I get them to all agree? At this rate we won't go anywhere, and then it'll be like that time Mother told me about when she and her sister couldn't decide where to go on market day, and ended up wasting the entire day without going anywhere at all! That would be terrible!

Male Human Fighter (Tactician 17/Champion 10) [ HP 340/340 | AC 38 Tch 26 FF 33 | Fort +25 Ref +19 Will +21 | CMD 47 | Init +22 Perc +31 | Effects: ]

"As much as I hate to suggest it, is anyone good at lying? It might be necessary to mislead the Pathfinders in order to get what we need out of them."

Zirt gasps a little at Hiram's suggestion, and her eyes widen. "You want us to lie to the Pathfinder Society?? I... I don't know if that's a good idea! I mean, I'm a storyteller, and I tell stories, but... well... Mother did always say that I ought to learn to put my skills to use elsewhere... but..."

The little gnome pauses, a conflicted look on her face. "Mr. Hiram, if you think we should... tell stories... to the Pathfinders, then I'll do it. Just... just signal to me if you think we shouldn't answer one of their questions, and I'll... I'll use my story-telling skills!"

I can't believe I'm doing this. :P

Lie to the PATHFINDER SOCIETY?! Why would anyone do that? You'd be hard pressed to find a nicer group of murder hobos anywhere!

"If the pathfinders knew where he and this book are, wouldn't they have gone to get it by now? Besides, shouldn't we avoid making enemies with such a large and prestigious group of adventurers?"

Male Human Fighter (Tactician 17/Champion 10) [ HP 340/340 | AC 38 Tch 26 FF 33 | Fort +25 Ref +19 Will +21 | CMD 47 | Init +22 Perc +31 | Effects: ]

"Hmm, good point Mr. Dovak, let's go to the tower then. If it is a dead end, we can investigate more here."

"I am the reincarnation of Aroden." Cyniq smiles at her companions, "but I agree, going to the Society may be premature at this time. Let's go check the tower out."

The party makes their way north through Absalom, crossing through the Ascendent Court, resplendent with temples and shrines. Soon you are passing the rich manses and townhomes of the Ivy District and Wise Quarter before coming to the gate leading out of the city. Passing through the gate, you travel for a time among the stately farmsteads of Westerhold. Eventually the estate holdings become sparse and you find yourselves in the Cairnlands. The road soon becomes little more than a trail and the way is rough and dusty. After an hour of travel, you begin to see the uppermost roofline of Flint Tower, the residence of d’Aponte. You also see a group of men in the distance heading your way. They don’t seem to have noticed you yet, but are bound to see you at any moment as the landscape is fairly flat and barren.

To Zirt he says "They look like nice enough folk, they're probably just out and about."

Sense Motive on how they're approaching: 1d20 ⇒ 3

The man in the center of the group, apparently the leader, raises his hand in greeting. As he get within earshot, he calls out. Well met travelers, not many come out into the Cairnlands. Are you lost perchance?

Hiram:
You notice an object hanging from the leader's belt that you recognize as a Wayfinder. The obvious sign of a Pathfinder or someone pretending to be one.

"I don't think we're lost, but we might not even know if we were! My name is Zirt... well, just Zirt is okay. It's nice to see that other people enjoy walking through the countryside on lovely days like today. It reminds me of one time when I was younger and my great aunt's granddaughter... I think that'd make her my second cousin once removed?... or would it be my cousin twice removed? Dear me, Mother wouldn't like me forgetting my relations..."

Zirt frowns thoughtfully, clearly trying hard to remember.

Diplomacy: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (7) + 5 = 12
Oh, dice. Why you gotta be like that?

Just a little on the loud and eagerly to her companions, "Hey, look, he's got a Wayfinder! I saw a picture of one in a book. I think it was Orson's Guide to Social Societies. Yes, definitely a Wayfinder!" Looking from her friends back to the man that hailed them. "You're a Trailfinder, no, Pathfollower, no, Pathfinder!"

Cyniq waves back, "I bet they are from the Grand Lodge in Absalom! Hey, I heard you pathfinders have different departments."

The man appearing to be the leader addresses the group. Yes, we are Pathfinders, very astute of you. He says looking at Cyniq. May I inquire as to the nature of your business out here in the Cairns? I must warn you that if you proceed in your current direction, you will soon come upon a broken down tower inhabited by a madman and his minions. I would advise you to turn back now.

Zirt's eyes grow large. "A madman? Really and truly mad? What happened to him? Did you go and visit him? There are lots of stories about madmen, but I've never met one... is he the kind of madman who takes in all the orphaned puppies like Miangar of legend, or is he the type like... well, like Nethys?"

Spotting another one she she steps over and pulls that one up as well, "Here Zirt, this matches your eyes." She will try and put the milkweed flower in Zirt's hair too.

I know, I didn't want to do it, but Dovak wasn't about to lie.

The leader begins to answer Cyniq and Zirt, but stops, wide eyed, at Dovak’s willing admission. Well then, it seems you’re not as innocent as I suspected. I assume you are working for his old partner, Burgstem, from Magnimar? Let me give you a piece of advice, tread carefully, this is a dangerous game you play at. The Society holds a plausible claim on d’Aponte’s researches, they may not be too happy to find it stolen from under their noses. If, and that is a big if, you succeed, you would be well advised to seek out the Pathfinders. He pauses to wipe the sweat from his brow with his arm. If you choose to go forward, let me warn you, the man keeps strange birds as pets, whose gaze can turn one to stone. That is what turned us back, we lost three of our party. Also the madman has a bodyguard whose is very sly, be careful of him. Lastly let me warn you about this, d’Aponte is rumored to be working on some kind of experiments with plants, plants of the carnivorous sort, so keep a watch out. If you can recover any evidence, I’m sure the Society would pay you handsomely for it. He pauses and glances at his party. That is all the information I can give you, again, I advise you to turn back. If you choose not to, then good luck to thee. With that the group bids farewell and starts down the trail toward Absalom.

Female Gnomish Bard 1 [ HP 9/9 (0 NL) | AC 15 Tch 12 FF 14 | Fort +1* Ref +3* Will +3* | CMD 9 | Init +3 Perc +7 | Effects: none ]

Zirt frowns after the man and his group have left. "That sounds scary! Mr. Zeke didn't say anything about being turned to stone or sly bodyguards or plants that eat people! What should we do?"

Male Aasimar Paladin (Sacred Servant) 1 > HP 13/13, 12/13 NL; AC 16 (T11/F15); F:+4,R:+1,W:+0; Init+1; Perc-2)<

"Well, we should continue with the task we agreed to take on, but proceed with more caution." Dovak looks at the man, "Sir, thank you for your assistance--if we do come upon something the Pathfinders would have a claim to, whom should I ask for at the lodge to thank you for your assistance?"

The lead man calls over his shoulder as the Pathfinder party walks away. Any Venture-Captain will help you, but you would do well to look up Ambrus Valsin. Good Luck!

The party continues along the trail and very shortly can see Flint Tower fully. Flint Tower is a tumbledown eyesore, a combination of flint and mortar. The walls have not stood the test of time. Piles of rubble and scree sit at the tower’s base, where time, weather, and plants loosened the mortar. In places, entire sections of the old tower have collapsed inwards. In the afternoon light, some sections of the tower glint a faint green. As you near the tower, large boulders and statues clad with cloth garments cover the route up to the castle’s gates. Great gates of thick oak bar entry to the castle. Northeast of the gates, about 10 feet off the ground, a ragged hole in the wall is testament to some ancient weapon of war.

"Well, the pathfinder did mention turning people to stone, maybe their clothes stay cloth? We should look and see if there is anything identifying them." Dovak moves to examine the first statue, ignoring his surroundings.
Move left 3 squares and up-and-left one square so I'm just to the right of the nearest statue.

The approach to Flint Tower is a gentle slope, littered with boulders and strange twisted statues of painted men and women. Each statue is dressed in a set of cloth garments and one even has a satchel slung across his shoulders. As Dovak moves forward to examine the nearest statue, the party notices ahead, a sudden shower of dust and pebbles leads back up to the
presence of a dark-skinned man of Garundi descent on the parapet far above. He stands for a brief moment, silhouetted against the moon, which hangs in the afternoon sky. His thickly accented voice calls down. “Greeting strangers, I hope you have not traveled far, for it is my duty and pleasure to turn your stinking hides away. We have have neither need nor want of vagabonds here. Now be gone!”

Zirt & Cyniq:
While approaching the tower, you catch glimpses off some sort of animal(s) darting among the statues. You are fairly sure that you saw feathers.

Hiram, there is nothing to see to make Knowledge checks on..yet. You have read about many different type of both birds and plants, but without evidence, it is merely speculation. We'll keep the rolls as they come up, if they do.

Also, there's absolutely no way you could smell us from up there, so why don't you come down and say hello, and maybe invite us in and I'll make some tea for everyone if you don't have any to offer! There's nothing to be ashamed of, you should still offer what hospitality you can... that's what Mother always said, anyway. Didn't your mother tell you to be polite and hospitable to travelers?"

Wise and well-traveled as you are, you must surely have observed something which might help us make him a happier creature. Oh won't you help us?"
