"Wrigley, excellent questions my friend," the captain settles against a wall. He upends a rum bottle over his empty glass, and a sour expression crosses his face when nothing comes out, "The wall, as far as the natives are concerned, was built by the gods and has always been there. There is a massive gate right at the village, which they guard, but they do go beyond the wall. Primarily, they go there to collect tar to help them waterproof their buildings... but it is a perilous journey to make.

"Oh, and I had more concerns facing me than to sit there inspecting walls, but I am as intrigued as you are. I get the impression that the villagers believe the wall was constructed to keep the villagers' Home safe from the beasts on the Isle of Dread. Its true purpose may simply be that, the gate may indeed only be opened from the 'home' side. There is only one way to find out for sure, though! I'm hoping Gratum will help us on that score."

Fishing around for and finding another bottle of rum, Captain Barbarosa fills his glass and favors Ciarán with a very special grin, "Map? I thought you'd never ask. As it so happens, we had a bit of a sail around before we departed for the wall of sea and left the Isle behind."

The burly sea captain unrolls a map on his desk and steps back for all to view it. "It's not much, I know, but at least we'll have something to fill in when we get there!"

Map (also linked above) updated! Forgot I hadn't done the legend! Ran out of time tonight, but should have it done tomorrow.

Bazsil grins broadly as Ciaran takes up the challenge and proves himself no piker with the spoken word. More surprising was Sumaru's contribution...and the gist of Gado's passes right over Bazsil's head.

She has some civilization in her.

* * *

He listens intently to both the Captain and Lord detail the mission, the voyage, the village, and of the wall. Something about the timing of everything confuses him.

"Hmm...do you have estimates of how long this civilization had been there? Is there any hint that things have changed drastically somewhat recently? Say...over the last 110 years or so?"

Aeslin spends a moment conversing with her weasel. It seems they are arguing a bit, but in the end, Aeslin's shoulders drop, as it appear that the weasel has won this round.

"Sebastian tells me that there is no spell that he can know that will help me to swim, but soon he may be able to teach me to walk on water, or perhaps even fly.

"That being said, I am able to make it so that I understand any languages, spoken or written. However, I cannot yet speak those languaged. Eventually, Sebastian promises, I will be able to speak to people as if in their own language. Won't that be neat?

"He also tells me that I might want to prepare myself a little differently than I have. He says that you folks are more than capable of throwing a solid punch, so I might not have to make people freeze like I did earlier, and might want to focus on looking at people funny, which, of course, will make me laugh. A lot. Please don't be concerned if I am laughing in combat... it isn't that I think it is funny... on the contrary... I am quite scared of fighting!"

She looks quite pale when she says this, which makes it apparent that she speaks the truth."So, when we sail out, I expect that I will be ready for different things... such as understanding languages!"

She turns to the weasel again, "Did you hear that he wants me to be their archaeologist? We get dig in the dirt, and measure things, and all sorts of wonderful studies! I'll need to pick up a kit with all the right shovels and brushes for that!"

"Funny you and Wrigley should raise the matter of language, Sumaru," Captain Barbarosa paraphrases slightly, "Pelius and I have had some thoughts on the matter. We figured that hiring experts in both languages, one for Polyglot grammar and one for Azlanti basic vocabulary, would help greatly and they would have ample time to teach us all on the journey from Magnimar to Azir*. As a backup, for later on, scrolls of tongues and comprehend languages are a must in any serious explorer's arsenal!"

* In game terms, this would be equivalent of giving you a free language, 'Isle native', should you choose to accept the training.

Lord Krinst brightens at Bazsil's line of questioning, "A keen eye there, mister Grimalkin. As a descendant of Aroden's priesthood myself, I too thought there might be something in the island corresponding to the death of the Last Azlanti. Alas, the timelines do not match. Rory found no evidence to suggest that anything had changed on the island for many hundreds of years.

"As further proof, we have the gnome's account. You may recall that he entered the island through what he supposed was a malfunctioning gate in a Thassilonian ruin. What I didn't say was that account predates the death of Aroden, meaning he was actually on the island when he died and the Eye of Abendego was created. The dates are hard to match up, but the gnome did refer to a sizeable amount of volcanic activity and earthquakes that wracked the Island at approximately the time of Aroden's death. There may be something in that, there may not. Rory said he encountered a few minor tremors in his time there, so it is perhaps not that unusual."

Bazsil nods as the Lord quickly cuts to the exact point Baz wanted to make. He explains for the others, who unlike him, might not be familiar with some basic anthropological 'facts'.

He rises again to address the group.

"You see, Aroden died in 4606. The year is now 4715," Baz explains. "The dreaded Eye of Abendago was said to start building about 3 weeks after Aroden's supposed death...when his divines could no longer receive his gifts. However, if this island existed long before that, then it might have been exposed in the recent past. Given that, it seems strange that we would be the first to hear of it. Something...must be off either about our understanding or of the island itself. Certainly, it might have connections to time of the Azlanti, but it could just as easily be an amusement island filled with dinosaurs built for the pleasure of adventurers like ourselves."

Baz thinks there might be other explanations, but cannot think of them at this time.

"It's also possible that the gnome was simply possessed with the innate sickness of his kind: a slow descent into madness."

A gasp comes out of Aeslin's mouth as Lord Krinst makes his declaration. She looks at him closely, and mumbles to Sebastian, "You know, Sebastian, I hope that he actually is Chelaxian instead of Taldan. Even though father told me I had to be tolerant of those fops, I don't know if I can adventure with one.

"No, I know I don't have to hold the prejudices of the Sarenrites. Yes, I know that Nethys expects more from me. No, I don't know if anyone here is really a Taldan. No, I don't think worshiping devils is a good idea! REALLY!" She catches herself, straightens her skirts, and says, "My apologies. Sebastian can be such a pain some times. He just knows all the buttons to push."

Fully understanding what Aeslin is saying, the weasel, Sebastian, takes a nip at the girl's arm. "Ow!" shrieks the Qadiran archeologist, rubbing her arm. "Bad Sebastian!"

Sebastian just sits there, with a weaselly grin on his face. 'How am I supposed to make this one ready? She is such a child!'

Sense Motive on whether Gado believes that 'Grim' is his nickname:
SM: 1d20 - 2 ⇒ (19) - 2 = 17

'gods' built the wall? Are they ancestors, or are they beings from another plane? And this black pearl of the gods... could that be the missing key to my studies that has eluded me for so long? Ha! It would be ironic for Mistress Lanvi to give up on my research, only to send me to the one place where I can finally unlock it all! Heh... I couldn't possibly be that lucky though... could I? Maybe Grim is right... I wonder how much of this 'gods' talk has to do with Aroden?

"I am rather adept at learning languages, and have studied many in my time here in Magnimar, though admittedly they are primarily the rare planar languages. I suppose that is a by-product of summoning so many elementals for study and research." Gado gives a distracted chuckle and sigh.

"I would be happy to learn and lend what aid I can to the study of the language on the way to the island. Uh... How long of a trip is it, by the way?"

Better stock up on scrolls and materials... Maybe I can finally get back to paying some better attention to that spellbook...

"As far as what to do next, this may seem ignorant, but what else would we be required to do to prepare? It seems as though we all will need to put our affairs in order here, and then make ready to leave. I would like to grab a few more things from the library before I leave. When and where are we expected to report to? Also, I... ah... sometimes have trouble carrying my things. Is it safe to assume I will not be able to bring my mule along with me? I may need to arrange for... other... means of pulling my own weight... as it were... heh."

"Don't worry! Barley knows Azlanti! Does anyone here speak 'Yak', though? It's a very complex language... I've tried, but it's beyond me." Elon chimes in after swallowing a large mouthful of sweet potato, not understanding most of what has been said.

These tallfolk seem to talk a lot... I thought we would be sailing for this island by now.

"Is it time to sail out yet? I figure we can just learn about this stuff on the way. No better way to learn than to experience it ourselves!" Elon figures as he grabs another handful of chips.

It is a form of wisdom to know what you do not know. So that is something, I guess. But great Gozreh, why have you sent me to this expedition of madmen and fools?

"I would be pleased to receive language instruction" the guide said. "That is a realm I have mostly neglected, I fear."

She then turns to the matter of planning.

"While I have never managed an expedition," Sumaru advised, "I have served on dozens. The usual way is to bring supplies to set up a field camp, presumably on the far side of the wall. This should be defensible, and large enough to house ourselves and whatever help we bring along -- say 10 to 20 people, or more if you want field laboratories."

"You will want a tent for whatever tests you want to perform in the field, and equipment for gathering what you want to study. For animals, that will depend on whether you intend to capture live subjects, but at minimum you will want to be able to collect field observation, detail tracks and scats, and perform dissections. For live subjects you will need plenty of cages and pens. I recommend laying in a large supply of sleep arrows if you wish to capture many animals -- that is usually the easiest way for hunters to capture them with minimal damage."

"You'll need a kitchen, and foragers...do you require this level of detail? You are professionals. Surely you know this already."

"Quite right, old chap," Lord Krinst nods along with Bazsil's expansion of the events surrounding Aroden's death, "Interesting hypotheses, too! You will have ample opportunity to explore those and develop many more when on the Island."

Marcus seems to have finished his magical checks at this point and re-enters, "I will be providing... erm, Gado, is it?... with some scrolls that he can use to conduct appropriate divinations while on the Island. Perhaps that can help you to get to the heart of the matter. Feel free to devise some experiments, and I will do my best to provide you with scrolls for the spells required." It is becoming clear that this will be a very well financed expedition. It is also becoming clear that neither Lord Krinst nor Marcus will be coming along. Aeslin can breathe easy.

"To get to the Eye, including time for the occasional stop at port for additional supplies, about a month," the captain seems to find his ease answering nautical questions, "We could push it and get there in under three weeks if we really needed to, but such recklessness was for my younger days..." Barbarosa lets a mischievous grin creep onto his face.

"Anyway, once we were through the Eye, it was another eight days' sailing before we got to the Isle of Dread. Assuming the Isle is near the centre of the Maelstrom, that would not match at all with the observed size of the Eye of Abendego. We tried to keep the wall of the maelstrom at our backs, but it was out of sight by the end of the first day. Our compasses didn't work and mists obscured the stars up until the very last day of sailing. We may have been sailing in circles for all we know. Regardless, it also took eight days to sail back, so at least we were consistent in our meandering."

The captain listens to Gado and Elon's concerns about timing an dsetting off. "Well my friends, as to when we sail out, the decision is up to your collective selves. The repairs and enhancements on the Audacious will be complete within a week and can be hurried to be done in just under three days if necessary. You have each been hired for reasons of your relative expertise, and I want to make sure we've got everything you think we'll need in order before setting off.

"So, what do you think we'll need and how long do you think it will take to procure it? No mules or the like are allowed on the ship - unless they are animal companions, of course - but Barley looks like he could carry some packs if required. You could also try hiring a porter from the village to help you carry things. I'll let Lord Krinst talk to you about the budget, but his arm can often be twisted a little...

"Oh," Barbarosa adds quickly, "This is the only place you will need to meet me. It is the only place I will be until we set off. This warehouse has been carefully set up and is well protected from prying eyes by magical and mundane means. DO NOT mention our journey to the Isle outside of these walls."

Barbarosa smiles a relieved smile as Sumaru chimes in with her suggestions. He allows her to address the others and stays out of it for now.

Great start, Sumaru! Keep going, all.

Elon's eyes light up at the thought of having his own zoo on the island. "Capturing animals should be relatively easy for me without these 'sleep arrows', you speak of." Elon assures Sumaru. "Though, enclosures might be necessary to keep the carnivores from killing the others!"

"Hmm..." Elon thinks on this matter some more. "Cages are too inhumane. We would need to build enclosures for the meat eaters and fenced in pastures for the grass eaters." he decides.

"Lord Krinst, what kind of coin are we looking to spend on an endeavor like this? I can probably work with whatever we are allotted but more initial coin provides a faster start-up." Elon reasons.

"Also, a fresh berry plant on the ship will aid us in dire times should that be our only form of sustenance." Elon states as he goes though the list of things that have saved him during his travels.

Bazsil listens to the details of the expedition and the long voyage. He grimaces when they mention months on a boat...one week would be torture for an active type like himself, much less a month or more. His ears perk up when Lord Kinst mentions being well financed.

"Should we assume that you'll be handling food and water and strong drink, Captain? Or should we procure those supplies on our own? What about other mundane and magical accouterments that we might need? I have needs..."

Gado quickly picks up the clue from Sumaru, and excitedly starts rattling off some of the things that have begun to cross his mind.

”My own study? Fantastic! I’ll need a large structure, at least two rooms. Will we be building our own, or setting up in tents? I suppose we could start with tents, and build more semi-permanent structures as we go.” Gado begins to ramble…

I’ve always wanted my own tower! Slow down Gado… Don’t go to crazy here… yet…

”Yes, so a large tent to start with at least. I need one side to be big enough for a proper summoning circle. Safety first you know. Can’t have any angry beasties getting out because of poor planning… heh…” He chuckles as his mind continues to spin. ”The other side will house my library, and all my research notes. I might be smart but it is mostly because I have written everything down. Extra blank spellbooks. You just never know when you will come across some new magic. Lab tables and benches, alchemy kit, though I don’t generally spend much time with that, but it couldn’t hurt!” He rubs his hands together.

”Don’t worry about separate quarters for me, I’ve spent more time sleeping with my face on an open tome than I have in any bed. A cot in my library will do just fine. Lots of ink, and paper, did I mention that already? Yes, I will need the materials to keep proper records and documentation of our studies. If everything is to be cataloged then I need each of you to submit reports on a regular basis. That includes you also, captain. The true value in this expedition will be the knowledge we gain, in all parts of the journey. I won’t let a single detail slip past. Though the piles of gold won't hurt. It probably makes more sense to construct the office and study furniture when we arrive on site. It seems we will have enough to bring with us on this ship. Ahhh…. What else? What am I forgetting?”

The spindly wizard begins to lose focus on what is going on, running through lists of things he may need, or want, that he has never had access too before, even with the generous investment of Mistress Lanvi.

Ohh… Mistress…. Hrm…. She is going to think Barbarosa is dead. She may think her opportunity for investment here is gone now…

”Lord Krinst, When we are finished here, may I have a private word with you? It seems as though I may need some help tying up one loose end before we can leave…”

"Okay, let's not get too excited," Lord Krinst holds up his hands, "We have limited space available on the Audacious and building materials for office furniture or a vast number of trunks simply aren't going to be the best use of it. You may certainly try to find supplies on the island and build your own furniture. If you require a carpenter to come along, let us know.

"So, clearly you'd like to know what the pay is... well, it is actually a percentage. Captain Barbarosa will be getting twenty percent of the treasure found. I, as the main financier, will retain thirty percent. Each of you will be receiving five percent (a total of forty percent for the specialists), and the remaining ten percent will be divided amongst the crew. Not included in this is the Black Pearl which will be retained exclusively for posterity should it be removed from the island. In that event, you will all receive a significant finder's fee commensurate with its value." Lord Krinst has a firm set to his jaw. It is clear that he is not going to negotiate on the terms.

"In addition to all of this, you will each receive a sum of five thousand gold pieces which must be used for the purchase of supplies relevant to the expedition, and must be accounted for," Lord Krinst turns to Bazsil, "You will also be kept well fed and hydrated throughout the journey. Barbarosa has never been known to let any man go thirsty for whatever his heart desires while on one of his voyages. Finally, you and every sailor on this expedition will receive a special kit that we have prepared for the sea journey that we expect will improve your chances of survival going into the Eye of Abendego, potions of water breathing and the like."

Almost as an afterthought, he adds, "And we will not be transporting animals back here on this expedition. Catalogue them and bring back any portable souvenirs you like from those you have cause to kill, but we are not starting a zoo - yet. Besides, and again, the Audacious won't have that much space available."

"We already have some items in the ship's stores that can be used for the benefit of the whole expedition," says Barbarosa with a frown, secretly admiring Ciarán's thrift, "I don't have an exact inventory on me, but there are some curative wands and potions, the aforementioned scrolls to help with language barriers, some items to help with swimming should that be required and of course, restoratives. You may want to pick up some extras for your personal use, or pool some of your allowances if you think it will be useful."

Bazsil leans back against the wall when the Captain and Lord reveal the size of the retainer for "supplies". He wonders how he could justify @%@%#** his way through the local Calistrian temple as an expense.

I could get that thing with the two halflings and the flumph that everyone is always talking about. Probably get it twice.

Shaking his head, Bazsil refocuses on the task. He looks around to others in the group, pondering.

Sweet...we just need 5 of us to go in on a rod of splendor then we can fight over the rod like The Gods Might be Crazy.

After a few moments of quiet contemplation, Bazsil speaks to confirm what he understands.

"We have a week to prepare. We're to report our expenses against 5000 gp. We are to speak of this to no one about this," Baz condenses condescendingly. "That seems simple enough."

Baz looks about at the group, eventually pointing to Gado.

"You. Smart little man. Gado. You and I shall go shopping together. I will keep you safe and you will answer my questions in preparation for this journey, yes?" Bazsil 'asks'.

Rod of splendor would be an amazing investment. Combine it with a cauldron of plenty and you'll be set! Broke, but all set!

"Well, it looks like you've each got the beginnings of a plan forming," Lord Krinst notes, "I'd listen to Sumaru if you need more advice on what is appropriate to bring to such a savage land. Now, I had best make an appearance back at the Hall of Wonder and there will be many arrangements to organize. Planning a funeral for a widely celebrated explorer is going to be very time consuming - and expensive!"

Lord Krinst turns to Barbarosa and snaps a salute, "Captain! I leave these fine folk in your hands now! Rory's funeral will be in two day's time. The venue and will be announced. Best if you don't get a personal invitation! Don't want to look suspicious. It has been my honor and pleasure everyone. All the best!"

With that Lord Krinst strides out, Marcus in tow.

Any final questions for your patron, now's the time!

"Okay, so we've almost got our full complement. I just need a chef and a cartographer, the sailing crew's mostly done... great!" Barbarosa turns to the assembled specialists, "So, let's quickly go over your role assignments. Ciarán, you'll be the group's bodyguard. Not guarding anyone in particular, but... well, you know what to do. Bazsil, you're the anthropologist. Matters pertaining to humanoids - human or non - and society in general, you're our man. Heh. Now, Aeslin, I think you're best suited as our archaeologist... not that we'll necessarily be digging anything up. You've got a fine grasp of history and rituals.

"So, Gratum, you're our builder obviously. No need to tell you what you already know on that front! Gado, you're our lore keeper, no doubt about it. Anyone who can show Marcus up on that front is someone I want at my side when delving into matters arcane. Sumaru, you'll be our guide. What am I saying, you are our guide! You've already stepped into the role. Well done. Elon... umm... naturalist? Yes, naturalist. Matters pertaining to the animals we meet, I'm sure you'll know what's what.

"And last... that's Wrigley. Yes, you'll be a fine diplomat. Words can be far more important that martial might. I hope you won't mind also taking on the role of the ship's musician while we're at sea? I've got you down for both..."

Okay, shopping time unless you have any more questions. Please see the discussion thread in a few minutes for some guidelines!

Lord Krinst quickly pops his head back around the door, "Gado? That was your queue, come along now dear boy. If you've got something to say, you can say it while I'm making ready to leave."

Gado:
Lord Krinst sits you down at the back of the mess below the platform. When he's sure no-one else can hear, he asks, "So, what seems to be the matter?"

Male NG Human Lorekeeper 4 | HP: 30/30 | AC: 13 (13 Tch, 10 Fl) | CMB: 0, CMD: 13 | F: +3, R: +5, W: +3 | Init: +9 | Perc: -2, SM: -2 | Speed 30ft | Hero: 3/3, Shift (10'): 8/8 | Extend: 2/3, Pearl: 2/2 | Active conditions: mage armor-8hrs

Gado's heart stops for a brief moment when he hears someone call on him. "Yes. Sure Grim. Just one second..." He holds up his hand and follows Lord Krinst out the door.

Lord Krinst:

"So your plan to make sure no one else tries to find the island was brilliant. Except now the woman I owe money to will think I don't have an expedition to go on, and I am guessing she will try to find another way to collect.

It shouldn't really be a big deal once we set sail, but that means I have a whole week to avoid her pet thug, bear face. I actually don't know his real name, and he gets pretty cranky when people call him that.

Anyways, I'll gather the supplies and things I need, but I would hate for your secrecy to be compromised because some callistrian black market queen started sticking things where they don't belong. heh." Gado chuckles at his unintended pun, despite the circumstances. He cringes a little inside, hoping that this revelation doesn't spoil his chances of going along.

We can continue this, but I will post below my response to Grim and moving my purchases and such along.

Poking his head back inside the room, Gado looks around until he sees Grim leaning against the wall, admiring his oily curls. "Ready when you are, Grim."

He sure seemed like he wanted to be called that, but I'm guessing I am probably the only one... Oh well. There is more than one way to make friends on a long trip like this...

As the two walk back towards the town proper, Gado begins to rattle off things he wants to purchase, mostly lists of spells and scrolls. After all, he will have some extra money to add do his spell repertoire, and who knows what kinds of things they will encounter when they hit the fabled isle of dread...

More to come later...

Aeslin starts muttering about things she is going to need...

"Scrolls... plenty of scrolls. No, I am not going to feed them all to you, Sebastian. Maybe a couple, but not all. I am sorry that you don't like the taste of kibble with burnt parchment, but that's how we learn new spells, now isn't it?"

She starts thinking about pairing up to go shopping, and immediately looks towards the only other woman, and gets a glare from the Mwangi guide. "Sebastian, I think Sumaru and I would have different tastes... she's all pointy things and armor and stuff... not dresses and jewelry. That Elon fellow seems a bit... dirty... and the creature, Barley is it?, that he keeps with him smell. Now that little fellow, Wrigley, he seems to be a person of taste...

She saunters over to Wrigley, obviously trying to put on some airs, or something. She doesn't quite pull it off, though. "Say, Wrigley, would you like to join me in a little shopping trip? No, I am not going just buy a bunch of dresses and shoes, but we may need to stop and pick up something appropriate for the trail... but I think we should look to get some of scrolls and the like. I am thinking I'd quite like a couple of pearls! What do you think?

"Have you been in The City of Monuments long? I just got here on a ship, but traveled with this simply marvelous woman, Sheila Heidmarch. She says she works for some society or something, but she's offered me a place to stay, and I am invited to dinner. "

Gado (by the way everyone, feel free to read the spoilers between Gado and I if you like):
Lord Krinst frowns at this. "I thought you were more of the sensible kind, old boy," he adjusts his monocle and affects an imperious stance, "But if we turned away everyone who had a debt to pay, we never would have found anyone to go on the first expedition! Ha! Why don't you just tell this Lady of yours that, given Barbarosa's death, you're working for me to help catalogue the treasures he brought back. You can tell her whatever ridiculous sum you like for the fee. If it's a high one, tell her some of the items were volatile and highly dangerous - you know, to explain why I'm paying you so much.

"Report to my mansion every morning to keep up the pretense. I'll try to be there or inform my servants that you'll be working for me. As you say, once we've set sail, won't be a problem anymore. I just hope your share covers your debts and whatever interest she decides to charge while you're gone!" With that, Lord Krinst nods dismissively and departs.

"Callistrian Black Market Queen?" Gado hears Krinst ask Marcus as they exit the warehouse, "I don't know, Marcus, these modern relationships. Back in my day, you skipped out on paying a whore, you just owed the pimp some gold or the reception of a beating..."

The door to the warehouse closes with a thud and a click as the two men depart. Clearly, Marcus had much success with repairing the door.

Bazsil waits patiently out of earshot for Gado to finish speaking with the Lord. When Gado is finished, Bazsil strolls next to the small man.

"You are a smart little man, are you not? That is what I think of you," Bazsil says smugly, his oiled curls glinting in the sunlight. "We shall discuss matters of the trip, but pay heed to your steps...now that we have purpose and coin, you must watch yourself here in Magnimar. There are cutpurses and coinskulks all over the place. Thugs and brainbashers at every corner. They are drawn to men of success and promise, seeking to take what is ours and drag us down with them. Unfortunately, too few of them wish to test themselves against Lucy here."

Bazsil holds up his lucerne hammer proudly.

"I grew up here in these streets. At one time, I might have been one of them: without future or promise. And look at me now, Gado, I am first anthropologist on an amazing adventure. Who could have seen that, Smart Little Man?"

Baszil will speak with Gado on various topics related to the trip and what they might expect and need.

"Of course I would," he says, finally regaining a bit of composure. Wrigley takes a moment to adjust the sturdy leather strap of his lute, verifying his prized instrument is secured to his back. "Aeslin, I don't think we were properly introduced. My name is Wrigley Mackay," he says bowing slightly to the woman, and it appears he is quickly becoming enamored with her, but perhaps that is simply because she showed him direct attention. "I've actually just arrived in the City of Monuments not long before I went to the hall of wonders, and I've never been to Magnimar before that."

"In fact, I feel quite dumb because I didn't even know this was called the City of Monuments," he laughs a little to himself, unintentionally allowing his self depreciating humor to show through. "Perhaps as we wander along you could teach me about this place? I had never intended to receive such a sizable stipend, so I don't know yet what I should pick up in order for me to... umm... not die on our upcoming adventure."

Before leaving to move about the city, Wrigley turns back to Captain Rory Barbarosa, "Oh, and Captain, of course I would love to provide music along our journey, I shall learn a sea shanty or three to keep the crew entertained during our travels."

Ciarán

The group's bodyguard grabs a purse and tucks it away. He adopts a surly expression and skulks out of the office. Those who listen carefully enough, however, can hear the purse jingling as he leaves with a delighted bounce in his step.

Elon, Gratum and Sumaru

As the unlikely trio make to exit the warehouse, they notice three bottles of gulping whisky. Each of the bottles looks perfect for traveling - or shopping - with. Sumaru notes with a wrinkle of her nose that they would also make an excellent antiseptic.

Bazsil and Gado

The streets of Magnimar beckon! Gado doesn't notice the thugs and pickpockets that Baszil warned about... but then, one wouldn't, would one? Besides, Gado knew first hand what lurked in the shadows.

Aeslin and Wrigley

The pair stroll down the roads and laneways of the Capitol District and eventually are guided by Aeslin to the affluent Alabaster District. Wrigleys eyes boggle at some of the stores the lady takes him to. Five thousand isn't going to be nearly enough! They both think.

Lord Krinst:

"Thank you, for your understanding, sir."

An idea suddenly crystallizes in Gado's mind. A rather devious one for the young man who has never really done anything devious to speak of in his study-filled life.

If faking a death will work for Barbarosa, surely it will work for me, without all of that nasty cloning. I don't owe her that much money that she would attempt to raise me anyways, besides, once she figures out the ruse, I will be long gone on the isle anyways!

"Yes, I think that will work nicely. Once we are sailing, we won't have to worry about this unfortunate, messy business anyways." Gado smiles, then walks back to meet up with Baszil before heading into town.

Aaaaaaand still not enough time to properly put it all together. Still have more thoughts...

Gado walks along with Bazsil through the crowded streets, trying his best to make small talk as they travel. It is pretty clear that the two could not be more polar opposites, both physically, and in background. Intelligence could be different, but Gado suspected that even in that, Grim was very street wise where Gado was ignorant.

"So, you grew up accustomed to the streets? I have always tried to stay away from seedy areas, when I am out anyways. My parents sent me to schooling pretty early, and from what I have heard, it wasn't cheap. They didn't let me out much, something about not wanting all that money to go to waste. I generally didn't get out of the summit much, with the school and library being here, in the Marble District."

The two approach one of the buildings, appropriately constructed for its location with massive marble pillars on gigantic set of wide stairs leading up to an impressive set of double doors.

"Here we are, I just need to gather some things inside. Hopefully no one sees me, they might not be happy with me taking all of my notes and research materials. Well, in a week they won't be able to find me to yell at me anyways, right?" Gado smiles half-heartedly, and starts up the stairs.

Purchasing MW skill kits for Know: Arcana and Know: Planes - ie all of my research materials.

"So let's get these out of here before we get noticed. I have a few other things I would like to get, but why don't we stop off somewhere you need first. Then I can tell you about Bear-Face along the way, just in case we run into him. And let's hope we don't run into him..." Gado suddenly looks over his shoulder nervously.

Taking the halfling on a whirlwind tour of the shopping districts, Aeslin quickly picks up some of the supplies she thinks she'll need. Of course, throughout, she is offering Wrigley ideas as well.

Shopping List, So far:

Explorer's Outfit (10gp)
Hot Weather Outfit (8gp)
Courtier's Outfit - includes jewelry which I will define in a bit. (30+50gp)
(her regular outfit would be a scholar's outfit)

(she'd by Sebastian a pretty new 'familiar's pouch' but that's UE)
5 sheets parchment (to supplement what Barbarossa is bringing*) (1gp total)
40 sheets rice paper (5cp each)
5 vials black ink (8gp each)
5 inkpens (1sp each)
Smelling salts (25gp)
have to run... so this will continue later

* If he doesn't have any, she'll bring a LOT more.

Of course, she just walks out of the stores without grabbing her purchases, requiring Wrigley to grab them

Elon and Barley take the lead, which probably isn't the best course of action, and the quartet heads off in search of a tanner or farmer at Elon's insistence.

They move through the street of Magnimar as Elon moves deftly through the stalls and shops, letting the wind and his inner sense of direction take him to places that could never be found without extensive knowledge of the city.

"So, where're ye from, Gratum?" the dwarf asks of his fellow stoutling.

Git yer pickles o'er 'ere!

"I been the the Mwangi once. Barley almost got eaten by savages, but I convinced em that he'd be a bit stringy." Elon states with a straight face to Sumaru.

Fresh basilisk blood for all your adventuring needs!

The hawkers sell their wares to the passersby and a few buskers try to ply their acts in the hopes for a few coin. A particularly bright young halfling seems very intent on playing the flute as a cobra rises from a basket and sways to the music.

Barley and Elon both sits too close for the comfort of their companions and sway with the cobra, clearly enraptured by the music.

Hisssssss...

The halfling deftly leaps forward and slams the top on the basket as the crowd cheers. Elon cheers just as loud and yells out. "I'll take him!"

In a second, it dawns on him that the crazy dwarf means his cobra, Kai. "I mean, why of course. Come talk to me over here, mister!"

The halfling pulls Elon aside and whispers to him. "Let me let you in on a little secret. The cobra himself is only a common snake, but the basket and flute are the true treasures. I could be persuaded to part with the lot for..." the halfling lingers as he looks over the dwarf. "50 GP."
