Eska warily looks at the frog-beast and whacks it a few more times with her mace. Once it's head is completely caved in, Eska gives Frankie a nod of respect.

Turning to look at the others, she remarks, "It's dead," before Molly tries to shoot her with that blasted noise-maker.

Eska looks around the cavern, and then into the water the creature came from, curious if there's anything of use around.


Serinda pulled out another bomb, ready to prepare it for throwing, when she heard the creature was dead. She considered throwing the bomb anyway just to make absolutely certain, and in case this was a trick, but decided against it this time.

Instead, as she stowed the vial, she looked around the room. Or, well, tried to. She was still blind, after all.

"So, was anyone else blinded by the light?" she asked. "I feel revved up like a deuce. Or like a runner in the night?" She shrugged. "Anything of interest here?"

looking over the beast you can see a tattered leather collar around it's neck, which may have been a hood of some kind used to cover it's eyes, and a brand on it's left haunch which appears to be some kind of writing

Searching the area where the creature laid you find the half eaten remains of a man's body. Little remains of the monster's latest meal except for a belt pouch still on the body's hip. Inside you find 52 gp's, a silver piece of jewelry resembling a pick axe made out of a human skull, rib, and femur, and two sealed vials.

Knowledge (religion) DC:15:

The piece of jewelry is an unholy symbol of Zyphus, God of accidental death, graveyards, and tragedy

Both vials are potions of Cure Light Wounds

"Uh, yeah. I can't see either," Molly responds to Serinda's query.

"I'm not gonna be much use this way. Does anyone have anything that can fix it or how long it'll last?"

Frankie returns Eska's nod. As Eska moves to search the area, Frankie turns to the others.

"That frog lit up like the damn sun. How bad is it?" She inquires after the others' blindness. I hope no one has suffered anything permanent, she grimly thinks to herself.

"The beast was branded," Eska tells the others, "Probably a captive beast, or pet. Maybe kept for food."

Eska rifles through the pockets of the dead person. "The beast ate someone," she says aloud. "They were male. There's about half of him left." As she sifts through his coin purse she adds, "He wasn't poor. He has around... fifty gold on him. Some silver... jewelry, I guess? It's shaped like a pickaxe made out of bones." She shakes her head as if that were stupid. "And a pair of vials."

Casting detect magic on the silver jewelry and the vials.

She shrugs. "I don't know what they do."

Eska puts all of the loot into her backpack (unless someone asks to hold or inspect something, then she hands it to them).

"So ... um ... what do we do now?" Molly asks.

"I mean, do we wait here to see if our sight comes back? Do we try to go back?"

The halfling looks around at where she thinks the others are standing.

"Do we just continue on?"

About an hour passes before the blindness is replaced by a series of bright flashes of light which eventually fade and those unfortunate enough to be looking at the creature when it opened it's eyes can see normally again.

As the blindness fades away, Molly asks Eska if she could examine the two vials that were found.

"Oh, I've seen those marks before," she says after a moments examination. "Those are healing vials." She then hands them back to the woman.

Readying her musket and spear, the halfling then starts quietly moving south.

As the party waits for the vision of the blinded members to appear, Frankie surveys the area. Noticing the running water to the north -presumably the same "stream" they accessed the caves with- she leans out and peers down eastward, leery of some other subterranean creature getting the jump on them.

Perception: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (19) + 2 = 21 For anything Frankie might see within the radius of the party's various light sources. I imagine there's penalties for anything past that.

Eska keeps watch over the blind, useless members of her party with a scowl.

Not that they can SEE that scowl...

But it's there.

Gimrund's vision begins to clear from the Gaze he so aptly looked at. He hadn't even had a chance to draw his weapon in that last battle. He thought "I missed a chance to pray. I'll have to seek forgiveness in the next."

The first thing that he's able to see clearly is Eska's scowl. Yup, his vision was returning. "C'n I help yer stare there?" he blinks a few times, rubbing his eyes and getting back on his feet. His very thick Common accent betrays the Dwarven Heritage.

He does a quick check for his holy symbol the Greatsword on his back. Makes sure everything is stowed before continuing with the group.

His glance picks up the silver piece of jewelry.

Knowledge (Religion): 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (3) + 4 = 7

The symbol reminds him of something familiar, but he can't quite grasp what it was.

Noticing that Gimrund was blinded as well, Molly can't help but feel better. If even a battle-hardened dwarf was caught unawares by something that simple then her guilt was unfounded.

She blinks again as she notices something about the priest.

"Weren't you taller before?" she asks, then shakes her head chalking it up to an after-effect of the bright flash.

Sorry, I couldn't just let it go without saying something. :)


Serinda blinked as her sight returned, and then gave an odd look to Gimrund. She was pretty certain he looked a wee bit differently recently...

It was probably just a side-effect of her sight returning. Some things were still a bit off.

"I would not offer to help her stare. It appears she has a mastery of it." Said, of course, in an emotionless monotone and with an utterly serious face.

Then she looked to Eska. "Though, it is pretty... bland, I believe the term is? Perhaps some variation? Like squinting one eye and widening the other? Maybe with a snarl too?"

Serinda's good for now on healing.

"I'll leave you defenceless next time," Eska growls in response to the insults. She turns and ignores them, heading over to the stream that Frankie's examining.

"They can see," she tells her. "Time to move on."

Moving off down the tunnel when everyone's ready.

Eska wades into the stream, the cold water swirling around her knees. Peering into the darkness she can make out that the passage continues west, possibly into another cavern.

The southern passage meanders southeast where it comes to an intersection with two other tunnels. A chamber to the northeast lies heaped with a collection of crates, boxes, rubble, and twisted metal. Several strange chalk drawings depicting spiky plants, a three legged creature (which you recognize as similar to the one you fought at The Foundry), and several pictograms of emaciated, four-armed humanoids are scrawled across the caverns walls

"Eska," Molly calls out, "I think we're going this way."

The halfling gestures in the direction of the southern tunnel. Taking Frankie's advice to heart, she appears to be waiting for someone else to take point.

Looking to Molly "A wee one callin me short?" He chuckles with real mirth. "From yer point-o-view, I'm sure I was" motions from a distance with his hands as if he was referencing the height of a child looking up.

"My...a wee touchy for a Kel." He shrugs, readying his shield and hammer for the likely unexpected. "Usually we get along so well, the Kel's understand battle..." Gimrund makes a mental note to watch Eska a little closer.

He begins to move with the group as they make their way down the tunnels.

Looking it over I had the wrong DC for the monster identification.

Knowledge (arcana) DC:12:

The creature is known as a Blindheim, a small magical beast known for it's blinding gaze. When the creature opens it's eyes the area is bathed in bright light, blinding all within it's radius.

Eska shakes her head. Why bother having Frankie scout the stream to the north only to go own the tunnel to the south?

Not bothering to try to understand their logic, Eska follows the others south instead of finishing exploring the areas behind them.

Serves them right if another frog monster comes out of that cavern to block our exit.

Eska passes them by and looks around the the cluttered cavern. She sifts through the debris for anything useful.

Is perception enough to sift through the debris, or should I make an appraise as well for something like that?

Letting the warriors lead the way, Molly follows along in the tunnel. Once they reach the crossroads and Eska begins searching around in the debris, the halfling raises her weapon to her shoulder preparing for any attacks from the other exits.

Gimrund looking at the waters, he looks as if trying to gauge how deep the water would be. He picks up a stone and tosses it in. The ensuing sploosh seems to satisfy him. "Seems a bit deep th're. Are ye sure we be headin th're?"

He turns to back towards the Halfling "I know yer meanin' nothing by..." realizing she's no longer there and scooted off somewhere. He points towards the tunnel. "Shall we?"

Gimrund moves a little slower, looking down the tunnel before joining those that went off ahead. Token moved

"Find anything good? I've been meaning to pick up a new set pair of breeches," she jokes. Her eyes don't cease scanning both directions, however.

With Molly standing watch, Eska searches the piles of junk but doesn't find anything more interesting than some broken pieces of some technological devices, wires protruding from here and there.
From Frankie's vantage point she peers down both corridors to see each opens into another chamber just beyond the edges of her light.

Serinda frowned and looked at the drawings and pictograms. She wracked her brain as she tried to gain some meaning from them. Did they hint at something? Indicate there are others here?

If she comes up with anything, she relays it to the others.

Frankie hustles ahead, admiring Eska's spirit but concerned about the lightly-armored woman taking point.


Serinda turned away from the drawings and moved to follow the others. She pulled out a bomb vial, ready to mix and throw at a moment's notice.

Gimrund catches up with a little jog step. He looks down the left pathway, only to notice that the remainder of the group are going right. He keeps his shield facing the left as they move onward.

The dampness of the caves and the echo of the sound feel almost very comforting. Focus Gimrund...Focus, now is not the time for nostalgia

"So, Gimrund," Molly asks quietly as the group moves along. "Are you a dwarf that misses this," she says gesturing with one hand at the cave walls around them. "Or are you a born-and-bred topsider?"

"I guess everyone has a different sense of what 'Home' feels like," the halfling responds. "I could never feel comfortable in a place like this. Where would you put the garden?"

Eska can't help but frown at all this talk of 'home.' She missed hers dearly, but she could never go back to it. That path was closed to her forever.

"I can't hear over your yammering," she growls.

Molly scowls at the young woman but discontinues her conversation.

At the rudeness of being interrupted Gimrund, and the feeling of Dwarven stubbornness he snaps back "Mind yer manners' lass" shaking his head slightly. He then nods in agreement at Molly's response of home. He makes a note to pick up the conversation later. For the mean time he quiets himself.

As Frankie proceeds down corridor she begins to notice that the temperature begins to drop the closer she gets to the next cavern. When she reaches the cavern opening she finds frost lining the walls and floor leading into the cave.
The passageway ends at a 10 foot high ledge overlooking the cavern beyond. A light layer of brown dust covers the floor of this cave while another dead body lies slumped against the eastern wall.
It's a DC:10 Climb check to lower yourself to the cave floor.

Knowledge (dungeoneering) DC:12 or Survival DC:15:

The brown "dust" is actually a large patch of brown mold.
Brown Mold:
Brown mold feeds on warmth, drawing heat from anything around it. It normally comes in patches 5 feet in diameter, and the temperature is always cold in a 30-foot radius around it. Living creatures within 5 feet of it take 3d6 points of nonlethal cold damage. Fire brought within 5 feet of brown mold causes the mold to instantly double in size. Cold damage, such as from a cone of cold, instantly destroys it.

Molly steps up the ledge with the others overlooking the room below.

"Boy, it sure got cold in here," she says.

"So are we climbing down or do we head back to the other tunnel?"

Eska ignores the dwarf. If the fool couldn't see the wisdom in being quiet in a cave system that had already produced multiple dangerous predators, then he wasn't worth the effort of reasoning with.

Frankie's eyes go wide when she sees the coat of brown "dust" covering this section of the cave. She turns and holds out her arm to block anyone coming from behind here.

"That's brown mold. One of the more dangerous natural hazards you'll find in places like this."

She looks over her shoulder, eyeing the body in the far corner. "Probably chilled that one to death. Sucks the heat right out of the room. And you. And things like torches. It's a stroke of luck in our favor that we're using Eska's magic to light our way." Frankie looks pointedly at the Kellid woman: "Your gifts probably just saved all our lives."

Frankie begins ushering everyone else back down the way they came. "The only way to really take care of it is -ironically- to freeze it, so unless one of us can conjure a winter storm I suggest we take the other cave back at the fork. Hopefully it will take us around the mold."

Molly's eyes go wide at the description of the brown mold.

She looks at Gimrund.

"That's definitely something that would not be in my garden."
