"Parda. I had heard rumors she was making her way down here, though the word was that those she was joining went only because rescue missions pay better than thuggery. It seems the end she met was violent; the wounds appear to be from small bladed weapons, daggers and the like." Jeyne's delivery of the grim news was as cool and dispassionate as ever; the brawler had been a regular at the Foundry, but after all, adventuring was a risky business, and falling in with less-than-honorable companions even more so. The result was not unanticipated.

Action 2
Knowledge (something? I'm assuming dungeoneering?): 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (17) + 3 = 20
At Camrad's sudden shot, Jeyne's head snapped forward. Her vision began to fracture again into a thousand different colors, and she watched in crystal-clear images as his arrow lodged into the creature's skull. Though she wondered if it was perhaps not strictly necessary after the excellent shot, she flicked her long spear forward, jabbing forward at the creature -
[Blindheim. A magical beast that has adapted to living underground by developing bioluminescence centered in the eyes. This light can prove harmful to those caught in its gaze.]
She tried to share her newfound knowledge with the others - "Don't look into its eyes!" - but only the clipped syllables of Androffan emerged. It seems this will continue to occur, then...
Zaken Marson |
Action 1
Zaken approached the half-orc after Jeyne mentioned her name.
Parda... she was a good friend and should not have ended like this... if she had just listened...
"When we go back, we should bring her body with us and give her a proper burial... she deserved this a least..." Zaken then begins to look for any item that might come in hand in their mission, since his old friend would not need it anymore.
Action 2
Knowledge (arcana): 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (13) + 6 = 19
"Jeyne is right, avoid the creature's eyes! It can emit bright lights from its eyes that could blind anyone too close!"
Zaken then moved back, away from the creature and leaving LEEK to attack it. "Whenever you are ready, LEEK... hit it when you feel comfortable... we are all fine and chilling here..."

Action 1
After helping the others climb up the ledge, Seven hopped up and reclaimed his possessions. In the dim light, the head of a dirty, crudely stitched teddy bear poked out of his backpack. He lovingly repositioned it deeper in the bag and slung the pack back over his shoulder.
When they came upon the orc, Seven knew she was in bad shape. He knew that look. The way the woman's body lay so still, and not in a comfortable sleeping way. He had seen others that way before the Doctors wheeled them into the burning box. She was in the long sleep. For a moment he was tempted to ask if she might wake up still, but everyone seemed so serious, he figured they knew, too.
Action 2
When the glowing thing popped out of the water, Seven moved to stand protectively in front of Malka, growling threatenly.
"Woooow" he said, as the Other Zaken's arrow flew right into its eye. I wanna try that, too, he thought. He gripped his sword tightly, anxiously waiting to see if the glowing thing tried to hurt anyone. Tolgy would be real excited to know that Seven got to use the sword at least once.
Malka |
Action 1:
Malka wrinkled her nose against the smell of decaying flesh that was starting to meld with the already nasty smells in the caves. Jeyne confirmed the wizard's fears and mentioned the numerous stab wounds. "I wonder if her companions turned on her or if there are other foes about."

Action 2:
Malka's eyes widened as the creature launched itself out of the water. She mentally flipped through textbooks to see if she could place it.

With regards to these 'early enemies', don't be surprised if you see some 'uber' critters so I can make up for the fact that there are 5 of you with a 20 point buy instead of 4 with a 15-point buy and, more importantly, to compensate for the fact that you are starting at 2nd level.
Nothing personal, just to keep it interesting... :)

Action 1, Round 1
The glowing thing thrashed its head and a real bright light caused Seven to squint. Luckily, the thing's head had just passed behind the blade of his sword, giving him some relief from the worst of it.
It was real mean, though, moving in and taking a bite out of The Jeyne. But Seven remembered that The Jeyne had helped Malka out of the water. Malka was right about The Jeyne, she might be different, but she was a friend.
He dropped his torch to the ground, gripped his sword tight with both hands, and rushed toward it. "The Jeyne!" he yelled, "Is. A. Friend!"
Tolgy's steel cut deep into the things soft body, spraying dark, oily blood all over Seven's face.

Camrad cursed aloud when he saw the blindheim stumble forward, it's brilliant eyes threatening to steal his sight. “You know what? Just for that, here's another.” he said as he fitted another arrow. He saw that the others were in trouble and decided not to risk another eye shot when the creature was engaged in melee. Well, beggars can't be choosers. he thought, aiming for a much safer lung shot and letting fly his arrow.
Longbow: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (17) + 7 = 24

The arrow struck home, causing a slightly different gurgling sound to spill out of the blinheim’s puffy lips along with a fair amount of blood. “Just go down already.” Camrad said to himself.

The creature's bioluminescent eyes flashed toward Jeyne, and the light overwhelmed her sharpened vision with an intense flare, leaving her in darkness. Which was a new sensation for her, considering she could ordinarily see in the dark. But by the sound of it, the creature had fallen to the others' efforts; she ventured forth words in the ensuing silence.
"I seem to be experiencing visual difficulties...it seems I did not look away quickly enough." So, then, my difficulties with language processing seem to occur only in times of threat. Fascinating. She turned and began to walk toward the sound of the others, using the butt of her spear to feel her way around. "Was anyone else harmed? I have been damaged, but the injury is not great."

Already prepared to the creature's blinding light, Zaken covered his eyes on the last moment. "See? That was what I was talking about! Well perhaps you do not see..."

Questions?

Yes but precise shot would help only with enemies engaged in melee.
Look at phone number pad. The archer is in the '0' and the target is in the '2'.
If an ally is in the '3' then there is no cover but the ally and enemy are still engaged so the -4 to hit would apply unless you have precise shot.
However, if the ally is in the '5' then both cover and engaged in melee apply. Precise shot takes care of the engaged in melee but the enemy still has cover (+4 to enemy's AC).
I think the above is correct but please let me know if I'm mistaken.
Others feel free to chime in as well.

I believe Fabian's correct, although I'm also pretty sure my group ignores those rules. (And since they're the ones I first learned to play from, I tend to forget it all the time, too.)
And I may ignore it as well.
Ask Malka about her last fight in Hell's Rebels. :)
But I have to keep the 'archers' from stealing all the limelight. They deal lots of damage and never get close. :)

Just make sure it's windy and their arrows get blown off-course. I don't care that we're inside a cave; it's always windy. ;)
Seriously, though, environment's probably the best way - wind, waterfalls over cave openings, walls, that sort of thing. You could always just ignore cover from allies while still using it from other sources, too. Not every fight, obviously, or you're just being mean, but when it makes sense.
Side note: have you finished reading Hell's Rebels yet? You should so I can gush at you about it. :P
Zaken Marson |
Nothing against Camrad or archers but I generally prefer to apply the cover penalties, even if in the above example Camrad's attacks were typed correctly, since a +4 to AC isn't a penalty to his attack, but a buff to the enemy's AC.
I have no idea how much dungeon this AP has... if it has a lot, I might be a good thing to ignore it since lots of corridor fights are really painful for an archer.

Applying the penalties also makes the Feat valuable, and justifies all those archery feats that ranged shooters have to take to be effective. Archers are already pretty powerful. They would be outright OP if they could just skip feats.
But yea they can be a pain in a dungeon. You could consider applying "soft cover" and making the AC bonus a +2 instead of a +4?
What do I know, I'm a bloodrager.
p.s. i want to see Malka's reaction to the Blindheim before I post a follow-up.
Malka |
Action 1:
This was a perfect example of how knowledge didn't always result in a good outcome. Knowing that the blindheim had the potential to emit extremely bright light causing blindness did not prevent Malka from being affected. In the dimness of the cave, trying to avert her eyes was not sufficient when the blindheim emitted its dazzling light. The wizard experienced flashing spots followed by complete darkness. She tried not to panic but this was the first time she had experienced blindness and the blindheim was still about. She felt extremely vulnerable and reached out for the person she knew would protect her. "Seven, I cannot see. What is happening? Are you okay?"

"I'm good Malka I hit the thing real hard. But don't worry, I didn't listen to the voice this time. Are...are you okay?" Camrad uses Detect Evil on the items
Camrad set himself to work, laying out the new supplies and scrutinizing each item. He was reaching for the bottle when the hair on the back of his neck raised. What In the name of…. he thought, looking in the direction of the holy symbol. Camrad focused on the idol, reaching out to it with his own aura and was assaulted with a sense of vertigo that caused him to swoon. He averted his eyes and stepped away from the body, wanting nothing to do with it. “Don't touch that carving. I don't know what kinda dark god our friends been prayin’ to, but it sure as Hell ain't a friendly one. Leave it to rust.”

Action 2
Camrad sifted through the garbage, far more interested in the possibility of useful gear than some crazy folks carvings. Sure enough his hands came up holding collection of coins that reflected silvery grey in the torchlight. Camrad almost hadn't recognized them, but he knew from his short time in Torch that these were silverdisks, a type currency in these parts. He was in the process of counting them out when he noticed an unnatural disturbance in the junk next to him. He shifted over to it and whistled. Now what do we have here? Camrad thought, turning to the others. “I've got tracks here. Might be human, could be somethin’ else.” He pointed southeast. “They go that way.”

At Camrad's exclamation, Jeyne made her way over to him and reached forward, fumbling for the holy symbol. But her sight was still blurred, and in the haze she could not quite make out what the symbol would represent, even after running her fingers over it to aid her eyes. "I do not recognize it, either. I shall keep it, though, for further re-examination later. Its identity could be of use in helping us understand what has happened here."
She slipped the chain over her neck, and the symbol came to rest among the nest of wood and clay icons already dangling there with a soft clink. "Now, does anyone require healing? Come to me if you do and I shall render aid." Her own wounds did not overly concern her; they were not severe enough to hamper her, and the bursts of magic she could call upon to heal were best saved for a more severe situation than hers.
I'll wait on healing Jeyne until the situation gets a bit more serious.

Finally, after an hour's time, her vision had cleared, and she had blinked the blindheim's cave back into focus. Now, leading the others into the cave, she searched warily ahead, spotting the scattered silverdisks and the trail of footprints just as Camrad called out. "I see them, as well - there are a few dirt marks this way," she added from her vantage point at the mouth of the southeastern path.
The drawings drew her attention away quickly, though. "These beings...clearly they were of some importance in this place at some point, but I do not recognize the species. I do not remember even hearing anything of such a race, though there are many curious peoples in our world. Perhaps our further exploration will enlighten us."

Leek can not be healed by 'regular' means. Unless I'm mistaken, you need to use the 'rejuvenate eidolon' spell to heal eidolons.
And I'm more than happy to reflavor it as mechanical repairs. You should reconsider reflavoring everything as mechanical and not magical, including when he is dismissed. Instead of popping out to another plane, he could just go dormant while his 'internal' circuitry is repaired.

Thankfully the images became sharper and then color and definition came back and she was good as new. When the group came upon another dead body, she inadvertently wrinkled her nose against the smell and the appearance of the body being eaten.
Zaken wrote:Malka, I think you could take the other..."Malka thought she recognized the vial because it looked very much like one she already carried. "I agree that Seven should take one but I already carry such a tonic. Maybe someone else would benefit more from having it?

Action 2:
Malka was engrossed with the tangles of wires and unusually crafted material that she missed the chalk drawings and the footprints. Muttering to Blu she said, "I wonder where these wires came from and who brought them here? Maybe we will find even more interesting and useful items the deeper we go."
Hearing the others discuss where to go to next, the wizard asked, "Can anyone tell how long those footprints have been there? Maybe they are Councilman Baine's but maybe they belong to someone else."

"Hard to tell. Guess we'll just have to find out, now won't we?" Camrad remarked, flashing Malka a grin.

Action 1
Calmed by reassurances, Seven opted to look around a bit while everyone waited for their eyes to come back. He nudged the body with his sword, just to make sure it wan't going to try anything funny.
The Other Zaken sure didn't like the little silver thing, so Seven decided to avoid it, too. Better to let The Jeyne hold on to it.
Seven grinned when Zaken gave him the potion, offering to shake Zaken's hand like Malka had taught him. He was still a bit awkward at it, and Zaken flinched as he squeezed too hard. Tag Zaken. He placed the potion next to the other one in his belt pouch (For emergencies, Tolgy had said).
Action 2
The junk heap was pretty nice, but not as big as the ones in Garritt's yard. Seven figured he could haul all this in about an hour, if anyone asked. Tolgy might have been real interested as there were lots of those scraps he liked to collect. He picked up a handful of tangled wire and placed it in his pack--a souvenir for the dwarf.
"Yes, we will," Seven said to Camrad, failing to comprehend the rhetorical nature of the question.

"Wow wow Seven... take it easy..." Zaken says, massaging his hand after the crunching handshake. He then offers his hand again."Here, let me show you something... you are pretty strong, and many are not that strong, so to make friends, you can't squeeze too hard... see? This way, gently." He then approaches Seven and whispers in his ear. "Girls also do not like to have their hands squeezed to hard... treat them as if they were made of... glass, ok?"

"Girls also do not like to have their hands squeezed to hard... treat them as if they were made of... glass, ok?"
"Oooooh," Seven murmured at this new-found knowledge. "Like glass. Got it!"
He made a mental note to practice shaking Malka's hand at the next opportunity.
