I'm pretty sure it is an obvious question, but not a clue of what it is...

Action 1

Zaken nodded at Camrad's words. "I think we are indeed ready to go... Oh just one more question! I was never a huge fan of the Weeping Pond and since you said the entrance was underwater, I assume we must enter the pond... but it is not a puddle, so do you have any idea where in the pond it is and if we need to hold our breath for too long?"

After Mrs. Freddert answered him, Zaken bowed slightly before thanking the old dwarf. "Well, thanks again Mrs. Freddert! We'll be back soon!"

Action 2

Zaken nodded once again at Camrad. "As my mom always said to me, if yeah need to find something, look for it in the Koll's shop! If you all need any extra equipment, like I said before we headed here..., I could get at my Ma's shop... so, are you ready to go? We could meet by the pond in what? Half an hour?"

Tag everyone.

Action 2

Jeyne was stumped by the question of how to get through a long swim - though she was quick and agile, she did not possess much in the way of brute strength, and there were few opportunities for diving in landlocked Numeria. But then an image flashed into her mind, of her body in another time and place, wearing a facemask connected to a glass jar and unusual long shoes. And the words presented themselves.

"Compressed air," she says in a voice not quite her own, her expression faraway, "and swim fins." A faint monotony that had seeped into her voice suddenly dissipated once the words were out. "A glass container with pressurized air sealed inside, and a mask that seals over the mouth and nose to allow a person to breathe the air inside while avoiding water inhalation. Like Camrad's sealskin bag, except it sustains a swimmer much longer. And fins, like a duck's or a fish's, that fit over the feet and cause a swimmer to propel themselves more quickly through the water.

"Does your mother carry such items? If not, alchemical air crystals would suffice, though they are not as long-lasting. And we shall need sacks and wrappings coated in pitch, to attempt to keep supplies from being ruined by the water, since it is unlikely there will be another way for our equipment to be transported. I shall accompany you, Zaken; if your mother has the proper supplies I shall have to offer barter for the air supply. And I can aid in carrying equipment for anyone who elects not to join us."

Not sure if Fabian will allow this as a way to get around the obvious question that we're all missing but thought I'd give it a try :)

There are several among us quite skilled in combat, who will prove invaluable in dealing with any aggressive hazards that may arise, and we have command of some restorative magics. If we face any unusual technology, Zaken, Malka, and I bear rudimentary understanding of it.

"In short, Councilwoman Freddert, we have taken precautions to ensure that we are well-equipped for the challenges we may face, and expecting our return is reasonable. Returning with some or all of the lost is less assured, but is our primary goal."

Dolga had given them a lot of information to process. The wizard added, "I think that Jeyne has summed up nicely why we feel we are up to the task of finding Councilman Baine. With everything you have learned about this situation, is there anything else you can think of that we need to know in order to increase our chances of bringing back Councilman Baine and finding out what happened to the torchlight?"

Malka helped seven count out his coinage to purchase two sealskin bags (waterproof bag x2 [5sp each]). They discussed the possibility of him using the funny swim shoes, but Seven didn't like the look of them.

Action 2
Seven looked down into the oily black waters. His odd reflection stared back at him. He bared his teeth and growled, then sniggered at how funny his face looked all mashed up like that. He placed a few fingers in the water and flicked it away, watching as the droplets formed tiny waves that crashed into each other. He was accustomed to the smell, having worked atop Black Hill for several months before taking employment at the junkyard. The water smelled sort of like Tolgy's hair.

"So, just keep swimming that way?" He stood and turned to Malka and the others for reassurance, his large finger pointing roughly east. Tag Everyone.

Aware that everyone was watching him, he nervously took a big breath, then dove into the dank, cold waters. His own momentum combined with the weight of his armor and weaponry propelled him forward and down toward the pond's bottom. From where he entered, the pond floor gradually sloped before taking a deep turn, and it was toward that darkness that he sank. He was moving too quickly, however, and before he realized it the pond floor flew toward him. He collided with it at an angle, managing to avoid a head-on collision and using his powerful arms to push himself back up and forward. Spotting the large mouth of an underwater passageway just ahead, he regained his sense of direction and began to swim swiftly toward it.

As Seven dived into the lake Camrad prepared to do likewise, making sure to remove any armor or clothing that would severely impact his swimming. Not so long as I feared, then, Jeyne considers at Dolga's report of the tunnel's dimensions. Perhaps precautions for a long swim are unwarranted. She still purchased the cobbled-together swim fins that Zaken's mother had found, though, along with bags to waterproof her equipment; a swim of any length at all was likely to be taxing, and she needed all the help she could get.

Fortitude save: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (2) + 1 = 3

As Jeyne approached the water, her stomach began to twist - not with nerves, but with nausea from the stench. Trying to ignore the queasiness, she looked into the murky depths, then hefted the backpack on her shoulder. It does not seem prudent to attempt a difficult swim with such a hindrance... Then she had an idea.

Uncoiling the two rolls of light, thin rope she had secured to her bag, she knotted them together to create one long length. One end she tied to her belt; the other she tied to her bag, once she had removed her chain mail shirt and tucked it inside the waterproof backpack liner she had purchased. The tunnel should only be forty-five feet long; if I carry the rope's end, I can pull my equipment through after I have already made the swim unencumbered by it.

Then she looked to Zaken and Malka, who seemed even less able than she to make the difficult swim. I am taking a rope through the tunnel. If you are concerned about the journey, I will wait to pull my equipment through until everyone has arrived on the other side. Then the rope may provide a guide or a support for those who are not strong swimmers.

Any chance the rope can provide a bonus to checks?

Donning her swim fins, she lowered herself into the water, trying to ignore the unpleasant cramps in her stomach. Just before diving, she recited a prayer to Kurgess, god of strength and sport, in a precise, formulaic tone, waving her hands over her arms.

Cast guidance. At least it'll help on the first check.

After her hasty invocation of Kurgess, Jeyne set out, kicking against the water with her fins. At first, she felt the god's blessing lending strength to her arms, and she set forth deliberately. But alas, her magics could only last so long, and soon she began to falter in the water's flow. Time and time again she tried to set out, and time and time current and confusion sent her straight back to the pond's edge where she had begun. Finally, when she once again found herself facing the shore where Zaken and Malka waited, she surfaced and took a deep breath, sitting in the pond's shallows.

[As the Master of Masters set his path, and through his own power ascended among the great, so too may those who follow his Way also attain his greatness. Discipline of the mind, discipline of the body, discipline of the spirit; all must I possess to follow in the Way of the Enlightened One...]

The chant was not from her own mind, but she had long since learned that, when this manner of inspiration struck, it was usually best to listen. Sitting in the shallows, she began to breathe rhythmically in time with the chant and felt the tension in her muscles begin to ebb away. Soon, she was once again ready to depart, and depart she did; though she briefly got turned around where the tunnel turned to the north, she soon got back on the right track, breaking the water's surface in the underground cavern with a soft splash and only the slightest huff of exertion.

You have been successful as well, she remarked upon making her way to the edge where Seven and Camrad stood. Let us hope the others are also. I have brought a rope through the passage, in hopes that it will guide them.

male

Wow, I didn't think this was going to be challenge but more of a roleplaying opportunity, you know bragging rights and all that.

In any case, the rope will provide a +2 bonus, the fins provide a +2 bonus and, if all else fails, the task gets easier after you've tried a couple of times (you've seen/felt the layout of the tunnel, etc.) and the DC becomes 10.

That should help.

So I guess that Jeyne gets to the other side to find only Seven there.

I'll give a description and such once we hear from everyone.

Your wish is my command. ;)

At least, Jeyne had expected to see Camrad on the shore; after all, he had set out on his swim before her, and her own delays had been immense. But when she arose from the water, it was to see only the hulking, twisted swordsman, watching nervously for others to emerge. He was concerned at my presence, when we met at the Foundry. I shall allow him to acknowledge my presence at his will. But as they waited silently on the shore, her curiosity grew too strong. She tried to start with the most innocuous question she could.

The going was easier this time, aided as he was by the rope, though he found that he hardly needed it at all. Guess you were listening after all. he thought as he pulled himself up onto shore.

Malka spent more time helping Seven purchase his own gear than her own. Thankfully Zaken's mother had enough sealskin bags for all of their gear. She added her share to the payment and thanked her.

Action 2:

All the way to the Weeping Pond, Malka's stomach was doing somersaults from nervousness. She had never done any swimming before and she knew she wasn't that strong. Her biggest concern was how she was going to get Blu over to the other side. Could he even hold his breath?

Fabian, do I have to make rolls for Blu too or does he share Malka's?

The delicate wizard stared out at the horrid smelling water and tried her hardest not to gag. She had to hide her apprehension so that Seven didn't become agitated with worry.

Malka hoped she mimicked his reassuring grin with a smile of her own. "Seven, Camrad is right. I will be right behind you. I am counting on you to lead the way." Then she watched as Seven disappeared under the murky water.

Malka continued to hesitate on the shore, not finding the courage to attempt the swim. Jeyne must have sensed her doubt or else assumed she would be in need of help based on her appearance.

I think Jeyne is the only one who took the fins and we have 2 pairs. I'm going to assume that Zaken took the fins and Malka will take the homemade air bottle in case either she or Blu needs more air.

Taking the homemade air bottle and making sure it was in easy reach, Malka nervously waded into the water. She grasped the rope in one hand and took the deepest breath she could before diving under the water.

"Malka?""  Seven sat crouched just by the water's edge, waiting anxiously for signs of Malka and the others (but especially Malka).  When a head emerged from the dark waters he breathed a sigh of relief, but it caught in his throat as he recognized the kaleidoscope hair and eerily glowing skin.

The Jeyne.

He stumbled back on all fours, pebbles and other debris digging into the skin of his palms.  The Jeyne saw him immediately, but pulled herself from the water a little ways off from him.  She said nothing, merely untangling her hair from around her head and fiddling with her gear.  Seven wanted to ask her about Malka and the others (especially Malka) but he couldn't put the right words together.  "Where is Malka" seemed an impossible sentence when her eyes and hair and skin all sort of came at him at once.  He gripped his gauntlet-covered hand tight in case she tried to come at him.

Seven suddenly wondered if this is what people thought of him.

He was staring back into the water, nervously wringing his hands together, when The Jeyne spoke.  He hoped she wasn't talking to him, but her eyes were turned toward him.

The Jeyne wrote:
"It is unusual for human designation to include numbers, yet your friend refers to you as Seven.  What is the reason for your unusual designation?"

Human. He didn't understand some of the words she used, but he got that one.  Malka kept telling him he was human, and like everyone else.  He knew she was lying, but she seemed real concerned that he agree with her, so he did. The Jeyne also seemed to think so.  But maybe Malka had just talked to her, too.

"Um... That's just... That's just what they called me.  Subject Number Seven."

Suddenly he had a question he wanted to ask her real bad.  "Are you human?"

Action 2:

Malka started out well. She made her way forward using the rope as her guide. About part of the way through, since it was taking a long time to move through the water she started to panic thinking that she should have made it to the other side already. She started to think that maybe Jeyne hadn't made it either and that now she was lost as well. She got turned around and started to go back. It was then that Blu filled her with encouraging feelings which helped to calm her mind. She thought of Seven being alone if she didn't make it. Logic returned and she trusted that the rope was anchored properly and she continued in her original direction. It was slow going at times but eventually Malka's head broke the surface of the water on the other side.

She crawled out of the water on her hands and knees and promptly vomited on shore. She rolled over on to her back and sucked air into her lungs as she fought against extreme nausea. Due to her inexperience with swimming underwater, she had ingested some of the foul water in her panic.

Surprise, surprise...the delicate wizard is sickened :) How long will she be sickened for?

Subject. Also an unusual designation. It imparts a sense of impersonality, an imposed dehumanization - doubtful it was a name of his choosing, nor does it seem one which would be given by well-intentioned or affectionate guardians in most human cultures. Indeed, Val sought to humanize my name from the moment she met me, moving away from a numeric designation to a more personal one. A fascinating contrast.

For a moment, she was caught up in the intellectual exercise their differing nomenclature presented - and then she saw the look of concern, even fear, in his eyes, and his question registered with her. My form appears essentially similar, difficult to distinguish without close observation, but I operate on a constructed matrix of polymers and artificial oils, with nanites mimicking the functions of the more active organic systems... As she spoke, it began to dawn on her that the more she said, the more confused Seven got. No. I am not human, she finally finished. I am an android. And an unusual one, at that. Tag Seven.

Seeing Malka's difficulty, Jeyne turned back to Seven. "She seems to be safe, though experiencing some sort of distress. Do you have some sort of drinking vessel - I mean, do you have a cup? Or a waterskin?" Receiving it from him, she dumped its contents onto the cave's floor, then murmured a few words; the vessel began to fill on its own, and with a swirl of her hand, she swished it about and emptied it again, ensuring it was clean.

With another murmur, the vessel filled with water, and she offered it to Malka. "This will help to mitigate the foul taste. I found the pond disagreeable as well, but this water is fresh." Tag Malka.

A couple seconds later, more than Zaken was comfortable to wait, LEEK emerged, dripping water from holes and vents that Zaken was not aware that was there in the first place. "Gez, LEEK, do not do this in front of everyone..." Zaken quickly said, trying to hide his former apprehension. "So, everyone here, shall we press on?"

An android. Seven did not know that word. He wanted to ask what she meant, but was afraid of her hair. He decided to ask Malka later. Maybe Tolgy would know, too.

"Malka!" he yelled as she appeared, sputtering and sick. He ran to her side, trying to figure out what to do. But suddenly the Jeyne was there, claiming his waterskin and talking to it and giving it to Malka. He watched, amazed, as Malka recovered.

This must be what Malka meant when she said The Jeyne is a friend.

Then the Other Zaken appeared. Seven didn't like the way looked at Malka, but he enjoyed the way his son glowed like a fire.

With another murmur, the vessel filled with water, and she offered it to Malka. "This will help to mitigate the foul taste. I found the pond disagreeable as well, but this water is fresh."

Still lying on her back, Malka pushed herself into a sitting position. Her stomach began to churn again and she swallowed hard before whatever was left in her stomach could escape again. She smiled weakly, more for Seven's benefit than Jeyne's, and she took the waterskin. Taking a swallow of the fresh water, Malka swished it around in her mouth and spit it on the ground beside her. "Not really lady-like, I know." she murmured. Then she took a long swig from the waterskin and was pleased when her stomach settled enough for her to get to her feet. "Thank you, Jeyne. That is the second time you have helped me in the last little while. I would never have made that swim without the rope to guide me."

Turning to Seven she said somewhat convincingly, ""See? All better."

Camrad gave hearty laugh and a slightly embarrassed smile. “Don't let my rugged physique fool ya, but I'm a downright terrible swimmer.” then he pulled out his holy symbol, showing it to Malka. “If it weren't for Ol’ Dead-Eye, I'd probably still be down there.”

BTW, Awesome stuff people. We just wrote another 3,500 word IC post.

I always like feedback, especially from people who are new to 'this format'. Do the newbies have any comments? See something that we can improve on?

Not just newbies, others should also feel free to comment as well.

I'm honestly loving this format. It's incredible how much gets done when you have a proper schedule. No thoughts on improvements just yet.

“If none y'all mind, I'll be hanging back a bit once we get this procession started. I can cover from the rear." Camrad said as he rummaged through his pack, producing a torch, flint and steel. After lighting the torch he waved it over by the ledge. “We should climb this. We fight find better conditions that way.” he said, looking back at the party, then gestured towards the north passage. "Besides, nasty things like nasty places.” Assuming no one tries to stop him, Camrad climbs up the eastern ledge.

I agree with Camrad, this turn format really speeds up the game. It's obviously a lot of work for the gm, but I'm enjoying it!

Seven was relieved that Malka seemed better, and was real glad The Jeyne was there to help. But there were other things to worry about now. It was real dark. Seven didn't like the dark much. The Doctors used it as a punishment when he as bad, shutting him in the darkness and...well, it had left him avoiding the dark when possible. He stripped off the sealskin bags covering his backpack and rummaged around until he withdrew a torch, flint, and steel. He fumbled with them, his big hands getting in the way, until at last he managed the light the torch the way Malka had taught him in the woods before they entered the town. He held the torch in one hand, gave a questioning look toward Malka, then withdraw his greatsword. He held the sword in one hand and the torch in the other, admiring the light reflecting off of the steel blade. He saw his reflection there, all twisted and funny. He stuck out his tongue and twisted his face, then remembered the others could see him and stopped, embarrassed.

"We'll need more lights," he said, proud to have an idea.

He saw the Other Zaken pull himself up the ledge to the east. Seven loved climbing things. He ran over and practically jumped the 5-ft ledge, not even dropping the torch or his sword as he hefted himself up with ease. He turned back to the others, lay his torch and sword down just to the side, then laid out flat on the edge, his arms extended down to help lift anyone who didn't want to climb. He gestured, indicating that the others should follow. "This way looks real good," he said.

Even though Malka was on her feet, she was still feeling sick to her stomach and was finding it hard to concentrate. She felt Blu sending her sympathetic thoughts and in turn he began to glow with blue light in the dark. Even though the light was helpful, it wasn't enough to navigate the caves as Seven had pointed out. Concentrating on one of the first spells she learned, she cast light on the belt pouch at her waist. Malka used the light to unpack her things from the sealskin bag and was soon ready to go. Having enough light to see to walk by she followed Seven.

Malka followed the best she could. Her eyes continued to water and her nausea was very distracting. When Seven suggested the climb, the wizard didn't know if she had it in her. "I want to get out of the water so I agree that climbing the wall is the better choice but I do not think I am able to do that on my own. Can I either get a boost or a pull up?"

Does Seven laying down and pulling provide a boost?

I failed my Fortitude save and never heard back from you regarding whether I would be affected, so I assumed it would still affect me and went from there. We can assume any reason you want - the industrial grime interfered with my synthetic biolubricants or something, and my systems took some time to compensate, but now they've adapted. It's hard to claim nervousness, though, when she's emotionless. ;)

Action 1

Once everyone had arrived safely, Jeyne pulled her equipment through the water on its tow line, checking once it arrived that nothing had been damaged by the wetting. She pulled on her chain shirt, rearranged the bag's contents for optimum weight distribution, and stood to depart, leaning on her long spear. And then Seven and Camrad struck their torches, and she remembered that the others would have difficulty seeing - with her own vision keenly attuned to deal with darkness, she had nearly forgotten the others would face trouble.

Survival: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (3) + 8 = 11

Jeyne knew there had been a dozen or more people coming through here recently - but she could find no trace of their passage. She agreed with the others, though; a few moments of difficult climbing seemed vastly preferable to slogging through the water. Having retrieved her rope, she threw its end up to Seven, still damp from the pond. "Hold this, please, or find a place to tie it off to. It will make the climb easier for the rest of us."

That ought to take the DC down to a 5, since there is a wall to brace against, so yes, Malka, you can. :)

She waited for the others to scale the ledge, keeping watch and sending one of her conjured lights halfway up the wall to ensure her companions could see while managing the climb. Finally, she followed up behind them; though the weight of her backpack pulled at her shoulders, she found the climb surprisingly easy, and fairly flew up the rope to where the others waited above.

Climb (medium encumbrance): 1d20 + 1 - 3 ⇒ (20) + 1 - 3 = 18

She took the chance to survey the area from higher, then turned toward the cave, peering in inquisitively. "I can stay at the head of the group, if you like. The darkness is not troublesome for me - I can see shapes and movement perfectly clearly. If I lead the way, I can give warning if something unusual approaches further in advance, and if there is any sort of trap or lock I am skillful in dealing with such devices."

Not the most heavily armored, but I'm probably the best scout we have, with darkvision and trapfinding.

Yes, since it's only a 5-foot high ledge.

Yes, I like your reason much better than mine. I forgot that androids are the equivalent of walking refrigerators when it comes to emotions. :)

With the help of Jeyne's lights, Zaken reached for his spear and made its tip shine with an orange light. He then unpacked his gear, both from him and from LEEK. He then proceeded to double check everything... he was new to this whole 'exploring' after all.

A longspear to touch things 'ya don't wanna touch', check; protection, check; armed crossbow, check; exploring gear, check; working tools, check... right, I think I'm ready to go! I think you'd be proud of me Pa... my very first expedition, just like you...

Pushing painful memories aside, Zaken looked ahead to the ledge and saw everyone already on the top of it, with Seven offering a hand to boost the climb. He adjusted his backpack then ordered LEEK to go first, touching him on his shoulders to proper guide him, then following afterwards with Seven's aid.

Wow, this pack is heavy... perhaps I should have worked my physique better in the past...

Climb (LEEK) (DC 10), guidance: 1d20 + 3 + 1 ⇒ (9) + 3 + 1 = 13
Climb (Zaken) (DC 10), medium encumbrance, guidance, help from Seven: 1d20 - 1 - 3 + 1 + 5 ⇒ (10) - 1 - 3 + 1 + 5 = 12

"Thanks for the help, Seven! So, now we are ready to go! That is a good idea, Jeyne... me and LEEK could follow you closely, since he can also see in the dark, I guess..., and could also help you to find any danger ahead."

He then looks at the other three members. "With Jeyne, me and LEEK on the front and Mr. Camrad on the back, I guess Malka could go behind me, followed by Seven."

I think one of our fighters should be closer to the front than both being at the back. Meatshields usually go near the beginning, right?

Camrad’s attention was far too preoccupied with the beast in front of him to pay much heed to the fallen adventurer.
