An eagerness for something more than your quiet lives in the Valley brought the five of you together and despite your obvious differences, or perhaps because of them, a fast friendship sprung up. Recently you decided to try your hands at the adventurer’s life. So far that life has proven far duller than the minstral's tales, and far less lucrative too. You've accepted a couple of contracts from Ebli's Images, escorting shipments of rare goods to and from Eiren, but mostly it has involved sleeping on cold dirt and watching you last few silvers slowly disappear.

But your luck may be changing. Your last escort job left you at a sleepy inn in Thraben Mill, and it was here that the courier found you, delivering a message from Rudolpho's old mentor, the wizard and scholar Silion Tuldaril. It asked your group to attend him at his tower in Eiren to assist him with a 'most urgent matter.'

You left at first light the next morning and so far the trip has been easy. You left the quiet village of Thraben Mill behind you and, after a long day’s journey, expect to reach Erien just after nightfall. As you’re passing through the Outer Homesteads, which is really a bunch of small farms just outside Erien, in the distance, you catch sight of a thick black plume of smoke rising into the sky.

Dolph was caught unawares by the missive from his mentor. It had been a decade since he had lived at the Master Mage's tower. "Silion is a really powerful Mage. He can do things far beyond me. He taught me all I know about healing, though. Since I left his tutelage, I've picked up a few tricks, but still. I wonder how we can help him?".

Dolph was a slender human, sporting his well worn traveler's outfit. His dark hair still had a blade of grass in it from the road. He wasn't strong enough to carry around much equipment, but truth to tell, he didn't have to gold to buy much more, given the opportunity. He had a bit of a nest egg left, but he wanted to save that for true hard times.

The Mage tried to talk the others into helping. Thankfully the boredom and lack of other leads made the decision easy. He was just telling a story about some interesting research when his voice caught in his throat. "Smoke ahead? Is that from the tower? Hurry, hurry," he beseeched, breaking into a run.

The chance to work for some real talent, who might possess some real coin was attractive to Raidh. A "most urgent matter" seemed intriguing also. And possibly, as it seemed, by the smoke ahead, prescient.

Like Dolph, Raidh's attire was weathered - her scale armor well maintained but none the less tarnished - battered and bent, dents attesting to a life lived on the road and in conflict. Mostly with the elements, the odd branch, some rocks thrown by urchins, and once, a bandit. Who was an old friend of Raidh's, and had been a little overzealous with a greeting.

Hair tied in a queue, and held in place by a headband, Raidh couldn't quite pull off the look of a commoner - her bearing too straight, cheekbones too sharp, enunciation just a little too revealing of a tutor's guidance. Her folk were horse breeders and trainers, and though she grew up wild by choice she was raised with a little privilege. Still, her blue eyes and red hair were not uncommon among the Amoreans, and she had an easygoing nature that found welcome aplenty.

Huffing, and cursing the armor that gave good protection, she set off after Dolph at a measured lope.

"Hurrying!..."

Wolf-eyes wouldn't have said it out loud, but he didn't mind roughing it as much as he suspected his comrades did. Growing up in the swamps had toughened him, worn away any softness - or so he liked think. And yet, having a hot meal brought to you was a lot nicer than having to catch, kill, and cook it yourself.

The prospect of a real adventure had been worth listening to Dolph prattle on about how great this Silion was. "If he's so powerful how come he's livin' way out here?" Wolf-Eyes had muttered more than once on the trek from Thraben Mill.

With his pointed ears and golden eyes, it was obvious that Wolf-Eyes had elf blood in his veins, but combined with his rangy, wiry build and generally disheveled appearance, it gave him a wild, feral look.

Unencumbered by heavy armor or gear, Wolf-Eyes had to restrain himself from racing ahead of the rest. Instead, he looked down at the brindle-coated mutt trotting next to him. "C'mon, Dewall, there's trouble down the road.

He wouldn't say this out loud either, but Wolf-Eyes was excited.

Sorry for the radio silence, everybody. I was experiencing computer issues of my own over the weekend.

Kee-rik trods along at a fast gait, easily keeping up with the larger folk despite his small stature. He doesn't say much of anything as he tags along.

Kee-rik is wearing a cheap scarf and worn poncho colored in earth tones; a simple rope belt keeps his weapons (a couple daggers, which you haven't seen him use, and a couple of nets and a sling, which you have) and sack of supplies handy.

Morgtii's compound eyes pulse with worry at the sight of the smoke. Could this be a disaster befalling yet another home in its absence? Snatching its bow off its back and readying an arrow from its quiver, Morgtii scuttles quickly towards the farmstead.
"Hurry newfriends! We must see if aid can be rendered."

Hilltop tower|The Mercs Fetid Bog | Encounter Map| Gear & Loot|

Rodoplpho begins leading the way but is quickly out paced by Wolf-Eyes. You follow the smoke for about a half mile to a simple home. Smoke is billowing from its thatch roof. As you enter the clearing where it stands, you can hear the distinct sounds of bleating goats, snorting boars, and buzzing flies. The gates of the house stand open and a trio of goats lie dead on the ground, their corpses partially putrefied by the digestive fluids of a pair of massive flies feasting on them. A flash of movement from a nearby animal pen catches your eye, but before you investigate further, an angry curse issues forth from within the house, followed by the sounds of crashing and grunting.

Things of note:
The cottage is small with no outbuildings.
• Its construction is typical of poor peasants with an area for people and another for animals in the house.
• The smoldering thatched roof is the source of the smoke.
• There are 2 ways into the cottage: a door on the south wall and a large gate on the east wall; each has a barrel nearby.
• Farming instruments are scattered around the yard.
• A nearby pen holds several rooting boars.
• 2 giant botflies are feasting on the dead goats, and 1 giant fly hovers over the pig pen.

Perception DC 15:
A barrel made of exotic wood and held together by vines has been deliberately placed near each entrance to the house.

Know: Local DC 20:
This is the home of Lidda Elerose, a poor homesteader that has lived alone on her farm since her husband died decades ago.

I will take care of all initiative rolls if combat ensues. You can view the map HERE and also under my profile pic.

He moves forward,, taking a couple diagonal steps to get the fly threatening the pigs into range for his destructive blast.

Rodolpho springs into action, jogging forward with and firing a bolt of magical energy at the gigantic fly, hammering it hard. It spins drunkenly in the air but stays aloft and turns its attention to its attacker. Morgtii and Wolf-eyes keep pace to protect the impetuous wizard.

Fly's fly check: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (3) + 7 = 10

Raidh and Kee-rik sprint as fast as they can to the burning house, hoping to render aid to old widow Lidda, trying to skirt the bot flies' messy meal, but the commotion near the pig pen riles them up and they take to the air.

Kee-rik's turn:
I'm assuming "gigantic humanoid" means it's bigger than the humans, especially as it's hunched over to avoid the ceiling. How tall might it be if it were standing straight?

Kee-rik will stay hidden and watch the humanoid, to get as much information on it as he can (what it looks like, how strong it might be, what weapons and other important equipment it might have, if it's afraid of the fire the roof is on, etc.). I imagine this would involve slipping into the building.

Kee-rik thinks the humanoid is much more important than the giant flies. If Kee-rik is in danger, or the humanoid tries to leave, or if he's found out as much as he can, he'll leave to tell the others about what's inside.

Hilltop tower|The Mercs Fetid Bog | Encounter Map| Gear & Loot|

Kee-rik:
The humanoid would probably reach almost 9 feet if it was able to stand upright. Not much more detail can be mad out - it looks to be wearing many layers of rags and cloaks in a deliberate attempt to conceal its appearance. It is intent on ransacking the house, clearly looking for something specific. The fire on the roof is spreading, and the smoke inside is getting thicker. Entering further does not seem wise.

The doughty warrior unhooks her spear and tries to spit the annoying insect...also near... Wolf-eye's... head.

Raidh manages to skewer the last bot fly harassing Wolf-eyes, but the giant fly manages to yet again Rodolpho's magical bolts.

Kee-rik:
You watch as the giant throws open an cabinet. It stumbles back in shock and lets out a moan of fear (or disgust?), then it screams, angrily grabs the offending object, and hurls it through a window - your window!

Suddenly, from within the cottage, you hear a ragged scream followed by a crash as a large object flies out of the cottage, sending Kee-rik scurrying, and smashing on the ground. A moment later, the entire side of the house bursts open and a massive form crashes out, stomping on the object and pounding it to shards.

Although the creature is humanoid in shape, it is horrifically malformed. Its frame is bent and twisted, its long arms end in disjointed fingers and long, terrible claws. Sweaty bulges of fat and flesh protrude from between the strips of cloth and fabric that serve as its clothing. Despite being close to the creature, it takes no notice of you, absorbed as it is in its enraged destruction of the object on the ground.

Know:Nature DC12:
The giant is a thawn. Thawn are cruel, reclusive giants that live far from civilization.

Know:Nature DC17:
Thawn are sickened by their own appearance.

Only if Know Nature DC12 is successful:
Know:Local DC20:
A tribe of thawn giants is known to live in the nearby Fetid Bog.

Taking a sidestep that doesn't quite get it clear of the danger posed by the giant fly, Morgtii releases a shaft directly into the creature's insectile face while lashing at it with his midlegs.

longbow: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (8) + 6 = 141d6 + 3 ⇒ (3) + 3 = 6

midleg 1: 1d20 - 3 ⇒ (18) - 3 = 151d4 + 1 ⇒ (1) + 1 = 2

That's one way to avoid the barrel traps on the doors.

Kee-rik says, "Sorry. Meant to warn. No time."

Raidh is mid giving herself an energetic fist-pump when the explosion rocks the side of the building apart. She stumbles sideways before taking stock and focuses on the creature.

"A thawn! They're cruel as can be, but despise the way they look almost more than anything else. If this get's nasty, tease it!"

Will post actions after Rodolpho...

Question for the DM: From which side of the house does the thawn appear? Where Kee-rik was?

Hilltop tower|The Mercs Fetid Bog | Encounter Map| Gear & Loot|

yes. Now about 20 ft south west of the house. I'll update the map when I get home tonight.

Morgtii lets fly another shaft from point blank range at the big bug as it dives in for another bite, skewering it handily.

FLY AoO: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (15) + 2 = 17 = MISS

With all the flies dead, the rest of the party can now act before the giant.

This might change based on what the other party members do, but Kee-rik wants to get away from this giant figure that has him cornered and far away from the other party members. He'll climb up to the roof and move away from it (move) and load his sling (move). He is prepared to drop the sling and go hand-to-hand, though.

Edit: He'll hide if he can, but I'm not sure there's much to hide behind.

Ke-rik clambers up the side of the farmhouse, using the broken timbers of the smashed wall for leverage and perches on the edge of the roof.
