What happened next was never clear in Nsizi's memory. There was some chanting, and some sweet smelling smoke. The lady in red had her hands on his scar, alternately massaging the knee, and drawing over the scar with her fingers. Akosua held his hand, and her eyes were closed as she prayed. Lights flickered, sometimes the lantern, sometimes the lightning. And through it all Nsizi floated.

As had happened when he partook of the sacred cup with his shaman, Nsizi felt a sudden, strange clarity. The room was quiet to him, the sounds of the healers muted. Colours and lines stood out in sharp relief, and the room seemed larger, deeper. Lightning struck yet again, creating sudden dark shadows. And in those shadows, something moved.

It was like trying to look at a heat mirage on a hot day in the savannah. Trying to determine if the water was real, or a trick. There was...something...moving in the room with them. More than one something. The air was suddenly thick with them, and Nsizi screamed. Or he tried to. But he was unteathered from his body, and couldn't make it respond.

The creatures wafted this way and that, sometimes becoming a bit more solid, sometimes changing shape. With a shock of recognition, Nsizi realized they were spirits. The very spirits he called upon for help on an almost daily basis. But there were so many of them! He had never imagined a world so full of the unseen.

The spirits moved around, and Nsizi had no idea if they were curious about the proceedings, if they were helping, or if they were even aware of them at all. Then, with a sudden whoosh, Nsizi was drawn back into his body, back into the reality of what was happening.

The chanting was very loud now. Heri was burning items over a candle, one by one, filling the air with a heady smoke. Nsizi could see the smoke wafting in unnatural patterns, and knew it was the spirits. He didn't dare interrupt, so he closed his eyes and hoped for the best.

Things seemed to be reaching a climax of some sort. Akosua was squeezing his hand, and when he looked up at her, her face was strained and covered with sweat. Annabella's hands on his knee tightened and released rhythmically. And suddenly, without warning, a warm wind blew up his tunic, lifting it nearly to his waist.

Annabella shrieked. She yanked her hands back, and Reya's voice stumbled on the words she was chanting. Nsizi was aware of Heri saying, "Don't stop! Not now!" and the hands returning. There was another final round of chanting, then a thunderclap that was so close it rattled the entire building. The room went dark.

"What happened?"
"Did it work?"
"Is everybody okay?"
"What happened?"

Everybody was talking at once. Akosua spoke a few words, and a warm light filled the room. Nsizi slowly sat up. The half-elf grabbed his leg and began examining it carefully. "My apologies," she said, seemingly speaking to the other women, "I hope I didn't spoil it. It's just, when his tunic, her tunic...well, he's a she!"

Everybody stared, and Nsizi's dark skin darkened further as he blushed furiously. Pulling the tunic down around his thighs, he said, "No apology, please. At home, all know that I am winkte...two-spirit. Male and female. It is known by my neswambi. I forget that it is not recognized here. I should have told you - such details can be important when working such magic."

As he said that, he swung his legs over the bed. Akosua smiled, then laughed. "It worked!" she said, giving him a hug. "Nsizi, look! How does it feel?"

Nsizi looked. His knee was....perfect. No hint of the pink ropey scar that marked where he'd been struck by lightning. Flexing the knee, he felt no pain at all. None. Standing, he took a step, then dropped into a deep squat. Nothing. His knee felt perfect.

Beaming, he said, "Spirits bless you all! Thanks, so many thanks! I have no words. I am in your debt, each of you. You are true ingelosi, each of you. I never thought..." he had no words to finish, as tears were running down his cheeks.

There was a lot of hugging, and cheering, and wiping of sweat from brows. "Come, my ingelosi. Let me buy you food and drinks, if kaka Longroad has any left to serve."

They headed back downstairs, Nsizi practically hopping down on his newly healed leg. Strangely, another gust of wind came from nowhere, threatening to lift his tunic for all to see. He grabbed the borrowed garment and held it down, wondering why the Stone Hall had become so drafty all of a sudden...

Sory for being late. Was off work yesterday and away from my computer.

Action 1

Osbun moved with the group back to the Stone House. He was too busy diverting water away from the group to talk much. Time and again a wave of water threatened to knock them down only to be diverted or calmed by the halflings concentrations. But this took effort and it slowed the group's progress. "Please call me Oz, if you need to call me at all."he manages over the wind and rain when he had a quick break.

Action 2

Perception: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (16) + 7 = 23

With the cat in his backpack and both cat and inside of the backpack dry Osbun did not think the cat was anxious to venture back out into the storm but he nodded his agreement to try to do just as instructed. "I too noticed the collar. I believe he has offered us the pearl as a reward for the safe return of the cat. Very generous. And since he gives up the item of value so easily I cannot help but believe his concern is purely for the cat."

Action 3

Finally back in the Stone House Osbun went about trying to offer comfort where he can. Using his power over water he dried each person he came across. "This small think at least I can do." he also escorted Zeljka to one of the healer explaining how bravely she fought agains the otherworldly creatures.

As Shari is busy today, I'll post for Zeljka

As they entered the Stone Hall, Zeljka could barely do more than collapse into a chair. She hurt all over, and water was still dripping occasionally from her mouth and nose. She sat there, dripping, letting the noise of the room wash over her, glad to be out of harm's way for a while.

The half-orc was grateful to be dry, though she didn't relish standing up. She gamely followed the tiny Oz, who brought her to one of the clerics-in-training she'd seen at the Bank.

"Merciful Abadar!" the apprentice cleric exclaimed when she saw Zeljka. "How are you even standing?" She shoved her previous patient gently down the bench to make room for the injured half-orc to sit. Placing her hands on Zeljka's shoulders, she intoned some formal-sounding words, and a wave of healing washed over her. Grateful, the half-orc thanked the healer, and Oz for his help.

Just wanted to get some healing in for Zeljka. If that's not enough to heal her up, then can we have Akosua finish it off?

Osbun was not sure that Adaela had included him when hesheaddressed the group so he was quiet. They he saw that she had indeed addressed the half orc. That made since since she was big and strong. But Osbun did have some power over the storms. Perhaps he could help. "If you go, I will go as well." he offered.

Fabian, I changed the character sheet to reflect the haunted curse. Added two new spells - wheee!. Also took the money, a cure potion, and a gem. I see it says that we get a MW weapon or armour from the smithy - I already took a MW studded leather armour from the fort. Does that count as my MW item? Or do I get another? Or a trade?

Action 1.

The Bas'o oracle was transformed. Gone was the limping figure draped in yards of colourful fabric. The Nsizi that descended the stairs was lithe and glowing. There was also no hiding the fact that the body beneath the thin cotton tunic was that of a woman. Nsizi, however, was completely unaware of that fact.

Nsizi practically danced over to his friends. He was pleased to see that they looked dry and healthy. "Bufi, Min, look! Friend Oz, come and see! Bibi kuhani, and Bibi Heri, and Annabella, and Reya, they are ingelosi, yes, very powerful. They have healed me!" He lifted up the hem of his borrowed tunic to show his leg, now scar-free.

Action 3

"Of course we will go! We four, we are the heroes of Pridon's Hearth! We saved the hens from an ogre, we rescued the cat from water-men. Perhaps if we fix the barricades, we can save a donkey. Even a horse!" Nsizi was drunk with happiness, and pulled the doors open. A blast of rain and wind hit him like an ogre's punch, and he quickly slammed them closed again.

"Perhaps there is somebody here who could loan this hero a coat?"

Open mouth, insert foot...

Osbun was pleases to see Nzizi walk down the stairs with such ease. Something obviously had changed. But it was something more than just the heeling of the leg. "Nzizi, I had not noticed before. Forgive me but it must have been the clothing your wore, and you should have corrected me when I referred to you incorrectly before as its now obvious, you are a girl."

That's cool. And while haunted does have its mechanical disadvantages, I think the RP potential of having Nsizi 'stalked/haunted by spirits (playful, mischievous, serious, whatever) is well worth it.

I look forward to your interpretation.

The MW weapon or armor is in addition to what you took to the fort. We'll have to 'talk' (RP or just tell me) meeting with the smithy and having that thing made for you (and the rest of the party).

Looking down at the borrowed tunic, Nsizi realized that it certainly revealed her birth-gender. Normally Oz's direct comment would have discomfited Nsizi, but she was too drunk on happiness to be embarrassed. "Boy, girl, what does it matter? The body tells us a little about a person. The spirit tells us much more. You are a boy, that is not interesting. You are brave, and you can command the waters, and you are kind; that is interesting. Call me kiki Nsizi, call me kaka Nsizi, I care not. Why should I care? I can walk without pain!" She leaned down to give Oz a hug, and then stood and spun him in a circle before depositing him back on the floor with a laugh.

Nsizi considered running back upstairs to retrieve his sodden neswambi, but the thought of rewrapping the dripping garment around her body was unappealing. Looking around the room, she saw a tall woman sitting with her family; on the back of her chair a knee-length leather coat was dripping. Approaching the woman, Nsizi put her hand out and said, "Good evening, Kiki, I am Nsizi of the Bas'o. The good Bosi has asked us to check the barricades - may I borrow your coat? Mine is soggy."

Adorned in the warm coat, Nsizi ran back up the stairs (ran! up stairs! Joy!) and retrieved her dropped iwisa and spear. At first she couldn't find the weapons - they weren't in the pile with her clothes, where she remembered dropping them. However, a quick scan of the room revealed them to be under the bed. Hoping she wouldn't need any of the other dozen things she kept in her wrap, she ran back down the stairs, ready to do battle with the storm.

The halfing was quite unsure about a world outlook where gender is of no consequence but says nothing about that. Instead he chose to be happy with Nzizi, hugging her back and whooping with laughter as he is spun through the air.

Preparing to go out in the the storm again Osbun grew much more serious. He stepped out into the rain in obvious concentration and the water, instead of wetting him began for coalesce into a solid shield that hovered around him. "I am ready."

Shroud of water Shield bonus of +3 costing 1 burn. Oz takes two points of non-lethal damage. Current AC is 22. This will last until after Oz has rested.

Action 1:

Zeljka's mouth dropped open in surprise as Nsizi skipped down the stairs and into the room. A huge smile revealed all of the half-orc's teeth and most of her tusks. "You being healed is the best thing I've seen in a long time! You must be over-joyed."

Action 3:

Zeljka nodded at the sheriff. "Thanks to your cleric-in-training I am ready to go." Looking down at Oz she added, "We can always use another who is willing to help."

Seeing Nsizi almost run into the storm nearly naked, the half-orc swallowed a laugh. "Of course, as soon as Nsizi gets dressed, we will go."

Zeljka will take a CMW potion from Heri and a MW falchion from the smithy. Fabian, did you want a retroactive post about getting the weapon from the smithy? And when would it be ready?

"Come, dear dakhwitsi. Summoner of Hepzibah the unseen, greaser of bags, eyes that see all and voice that inspires. We cannot possibly go without you." In her borrowed coat, Nsizi hooked arms with Min and pulled her to the door. "When we return, I will teach Kaka Longroad to make Bas'o iti. I wrote on my char sheet that I took a cure potion from Heri (is that CMW?). It's in my inventory.

Seriously, this perception roll isn't going to be worth the time it takes to type it...

perception: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (19) + 1 = 20

HOLY SHIT! OMG hilarious, it censored me!

Nsizi squinted into the storm at the figure. There was something...off...about it. A flash of lightning glared on the creatures, and she realized what they were looking at.

"Mjusi!" she shout/said to the others. "Those are the mjusi...snake people." It seemed likely they were the same mjusi responsible for the slaughter at the fort. Now it seemed they were trying to drown Pridon's Hearth.

Nsizi was suddenly very aware how vulnerable they were. Four against four, true, but the shaman must be very powerful to control so much lightning. And Nsizi had not the strength to call upon the spirits in any meaningful way until after she rested.

"We might not be able to take them all, but we have to at least stop the shaman," Nsizi said. "What can we do to stop him?

Female half-orc Slayer/7

perception: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (15) + 6 = 21

Zeljka was already unslinging her falchion as Nsizi came to the same conclusion as the half-orc. There were lizardfolk intending to harm Pridon's Hearth and they needed to be stopped.

Nsizi wrote:
"We might not be able to take them all, but we have to at least stop the shaman," Nsizi said. "What can we do to stop him?

The half-orc growled, "A blade will stop the shaman." With that she started making her way towards the group with haste.

Action 2

Perception 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (18) + 1 = 19

Min couldn't see a thing through the driving rain and flashing lightning, but she took Nsizi's word for it.

Nsizi wrote:
"We might not be able to take them all, but we have to at least stop the shaman," Nsizi said. "What can we do to stop him?

"I don't know!" she snapped back. "I told you I can't stop lightning!" She felt dangerously vulnerable, besides being soaked, her strongest spells spent for the day and her options severely limited.

She watched Zeljka helplessly, knowing that if the lizardfolk have ranged weaponry or offensive spells, the half-orc was likely never to reach the shaman.

I'll wait for Osbun but it looks like Zelkja will 'double move' towards the lizardfolk.

Anyone else doing anything?

Pulling her borrowed coat around her, Nsizi trudged after her friend. She wasn't sure what they could do against such a force, but she wasn't going to let Zeljka face them alone.

Osbun was scarred. This situation was terrifying in fact. But he had new friends and would not let them face this danger alone. falling in with the half orc he whispered "I am with you." His short legs seemed to have no trouble keeping up with his larger companion. In fact he was actually faster and was soon leading the way.

Oz has the best AC so me might as well be up front.

Min followed in no particular hurry, neither wanting to distinguish herself as a target nor hoping to engage in hand-to-hand combat.

Min will advance no nearer than 30 feet from the nearest enemy, which is the range for most of her spells.

Why are we rolling perception? And do we need initiative? And I want to suggest that because Oz's blast is energy it should not suffer the wind penalty to ranged attacks. Would a scorching ray suffer the penalty?

You are reading the turn recaps, right? The turn recap 'recaps' the information since the last turn recap but also adds new information (sets up new scenes for PCs to RP).

It makes me wonder because last time you asked for a map and now you are saying that you missed the call for perception. I just reread the turn recap and it's clearly there.

Regarding combat, I use what's called 'block initiative'. People who beat the NPCs initiative roll get to act first, then the NPCs act (all at the same initiative count), and then all PCs act (some for Round 1 and some for Round 2). It then keeps going like that for subsequent rounds. You only have to wait during the first round if you did not the NPCs initiative.

BTW: you may read ALL my spoilers and question/challenge (nicely :)) me if I made a mistake.

If I may toss my 2 cents in - I think some of the confusion may lie in the fact that in the turn recap, it says "DC 15 - the shaman has..." but it doesn't specifically mention to roll perception as it has in previous recaps. And I often forget to look for the map as it's at the bottom below the health chart.

Looking forward to getting decimated by this fight!

Min shifted her weight from one foot to another, just managing to keep her ankles free of the sudden grasping plant growth. "Nethys blast him! Zeljka!" she shouted over the wind and rain. "Make him regret not catching you in his damned garden! Come on," she encouraged Nsizi and Oz. "We need to get out of here before the grass grows over our feet, or we'll be trapped!" She headed out of the entangled area to the northeast, roughly following the overgrown road.

Double-move toward the edge of the area of effect.

Female half-orc Slayer/7

Zeljka raised her blade again and brought it down on the next lizardman. She desperately wanted to get to the shaman but there were still two lizards in her way. The only way to stop the shaman and the lightening was to kill the two remaining obstacles.

falchion: 1d20 + 7 + 1 ⇒ (9) + 7 + 1 = 17
damage: 2d4 + 6 + 1 ⇒ (3, 1) + 6 + 1 = 11

I figured that these lizardman were all the same so that if I studied one then it would apply to all three so I left the studied target bonuses in place.

If what Nsizi is planning to do works, Zeljka will attack whichever lizard is still in her way in order to get to the shaman. Her priority is to attack the shaman and will only engage the other lizardman if they stand in her way.

Ref save: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (7) + 2 = 9

Nsizi tried to take a step forward with Min, and found her legs firmly entangled in the magical vegetation. It would take quite a bit of effort to break free, and she wasn't sure if Zeljka could last without help. Though she did seem to be taking care of the mjusi very well on her own so far.

"Keep going!" she shouted to the wizard, "I'm right behind you." Before attempting to follow her, however, Nsizi reached into her borrowed pocket and pulled something out. Glad that she'd thought to grab it from her neswambi, she screamed, "Two can play at that game!" Then she tossed the tanglefoot bag at the nearest mjusi.

tanglefoot toss: 1d20 + 1 - 2 ⇒ (14) + 1 - 2 = 13
Str: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (19) + 2 = 21

Despite the wind and rain, the throw was good and the bag exploded at the feet of the mjusi beside Zeljka. The lizard was instantly covered in a sticky glue that hardened quickly, despite the rain.

Nsizi then wrenched her legs free and plodded towards the melee as best as she could.

Sorry, that should read northwest in Min's post above. I just noticed the error. She's aiming for the left side of the area of effect, taking the road behind the house, not wading into the water. :P

Vines tried to ensnare the halfling but he was too quick for their engaging reach for now.

I have already posted my attack but will use move acton to try to get out of the engtahgling area and closer to the enemy but not adjacent to them.

You guys are fast! And before my bedtime. :)

Turn 045 - Entangled

Game on!

rolls:

reflex save: 1d20 + 0 ⇒ (16) + 0 = 16, pass

lizard 2 blade to hit: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (13) + 2 = 15

lizard 2 bite: 1d20 + 0 ⇒ (17) + 0 = 17

lizard 3 blade to hit: 1d20 + 2 - 2 ⇒ (18) + 2 - 2 = 18
damage: 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (4) + 1 = 5
lizard 3 bite: 1d20 + 0 - 2 ⇒ (19) + 0 - 2 = 17

Spellcraft 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (19) + 8 = 27

"He's calling down another bolt!" Min called out a warning. "Try to hit him! We may be able to disrupt the spell!"

Taking her own advice, she conjured a dart of acid and sent it speeding toward the shaman, but the storm raging around her, combined with her own jittery nerves, spoiled her aim.

Acid Dart as a ranged touch attack 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (6) + 3 = 9 damage 1d6 + 1 ⇒ (1) + 1 = 2

I don't know if Acid Dart is a physical or magical missile, but I'm pretty sure that misses with or without the penalty.

@Min - next round, you should totally cast summon monster 1 - summon a fire beetle into his pants. Bite him in the *$%&s! This is what happens when Zeljka and I get together in real life. :)

Ref save: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (18) + 2 = 20

As Nsizi struggled through the twining, grabbing undergrowth, she finally managed to skip ahead of a twisting vine and stumble free of the spell's area.

This put her within arm's length of the two mjusi that Zeljka was fighting. The one entangled in the bag she'd cast was snarling with rage, but Nsizi ignored her. Instead, she reached out and grabbed at the one bleeding into the rain. Hoping for the best, she let out a blast of electricity that she hoped would finish her off.

melee touch: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (7) + 3 = 10 (I think I add my BAB and Dex bonus to the roll?)
damage: 1d6 + 1 ⇒ (2) + 1 = 3

That was actually the plan, but first she had to get out of the entangle and now she can't finish the summon until after his spell goes off. :P

Can't risk having her spell disrupted; it's the last thing in her toolbox. After that, she's just opening and closing doors.

Hm, I wonder if the local supermarket would pay her to sit up front and be the automatic doors when people go in and out. There's gainful employment.

That made us lol!

I forgot that summon monster is a full round spell. Bummer. Still. Fire beetle in the pants. Classic.
