GM Madcaster |
"All right," he nods and goes in the back room. The muted sounds of cooking can be heard from inside, along with fish and spices smell seeping through.
In about half an hour Kervo shows with five plates and a tankard of mead.
"Here ya go," after he puts them on a table, he returns to his figurine.
Trem Kiran |
Once at the table, Trem make sure to talk with everyone. He spend most of the meal time asking around the table about their past, the reasons that brought them here and what they can do. when asked, he is more the proud to explain what he can do, what Sarari can do and their mutual relationship. Going in all the fine detail about his arcane arts.
About his past, where he come from and why he is here, he remains vague. He uses answers like, far up north, land of opportunity and looking for adventure.
When the meal conclude he look back at Saurek. "Thanks for sharing this meal with us. Not that I would be any good at it, but would you like some assistance at building your camp for the night? If not, I will retire for the night"
If his help is not needed, when he passed next to Sulia he whispers.
Sau're'!K of The Mulaa Tribe |
Saurek listens more than he speaks but when asked about his capabilities he is is not shy to talk about how he has learned to be more aware than most by spending so much time in the wilds of Sargava. He also knows a little magic tied to the natural world.
When Trem offers to help with setting up a camp Saurek smiles but shakes his head. . I do not require assistance, but thank you for offering.
As the meal starts to approach its natural conclusion Saurek makes his apologies and then heads out to find a campsite. He'll start by asking the guards if their are any Zenj campsites around, or if their are laws regarding where and when camping is allowed.
survival: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (3) + 11 = 14 He'll set up a camp with a fire and basic lean-to in case it rains.
GM... Was Saurek asked to leave Rek outside or was the dinosaur inside this whole time.
GM Madcaster |
Saurek manages to find one militiaman on patrol, who tells him that he doesn't know of any Zenj campsites. He also mentions that camping is allowed outside of the city walls any time.
Saurek manages to find a nice clear space not far from the jungle edge. He quickly sets up a campfire and a place to sleep near a tree, just in time to hide from a drizzling rain.
After a good night's rest you gather at the main hall of the Stone Hall, where Adaela Praet is sitting behind a table, already waiting for you.
"Ah, you're awake. Good," she waves hand, offering you to join her.
When you get closer to her, she starts speaking.
"First, let me thank you again for not resorting to violence yesterday," she nods you gratefully.
"Now, how about a good breakfast?" She orders everyone eggs, roasted dika seeds, fried taro and a few drinks.
"So tell me, what brings you to Pridon's Hearth?" Adeala Praet asks, interlocking her fingers. You can see a tattoo on her right arm that bears the symbol of a sword and sunburst.
Saurek - By default I assume you leave your pet outside. At least in civilized places. If you want to take it inside, you'll need to mention it.
Just a bit of fast forward, if no one minds.
Sulia Farwander |
"Oh! I came because I wanted to find somewhere I could help people!" Sulia mentions. "Figure I'd spend a decade or two here helping out before I finally get married and settle down back home or something."

"Oh you're Iomedan? Nice! I like her. My gran's had lunch with her once. Said she was the most lovely goddess. I follow Gozreh, I haven't had any personal-personal meetings with him but he is a sizable and respectable deity, you know?"
Trem Kiran |
Waking up, Trem goes through his morning routine of shaving, cleaning and getting his things ready for the day. Looking at his only set of clothes that are well worned, he think of the possbilities of getting more now that he won't be traveling as much... hopefully!
He then proceed to do the ritual to summon Sarari. It always lift his spirit when he has her by his side.
He greet his fellow travel companions has he meet them on his way to meet with Adeala Praet.
"What bring me to Pridon's Hearth? Well, I'm mostly looking to settle down somewhere new. What better place then a new colony for a new start?"

In the Morning Saurek comes to the Stone hall chewing on some leaves he has picked from the jungle. There is a bounce in his step that hadn't been there before. Good Morning all... What a glorious night ... all that rain, fantastic.
Saurek begins to eat with little ceremony when the food arrives. When it's obvious that he's expected to answer the question...
I have come to keep others alive... I am the best Jungle Guide around and I know that I will be needed here.
Sulia Farwander |
Sulia grins into her glass of water. "Yes, she did!" she replies. "Helps that she's an angel, you know? Not actually my direct grandmother, more like great-great-great Gran... but she still comes and visits the family now and again, so most of us just refer to her as 'gran' either way. Her full name's almost impossible to pronounce properly!"
She sets her drink down and pats Ansado on the arm. "Thanks for asking, by the way! I don't get a lot of people who just talk to me like a normal person."
GM Madcaster |
Adaela Praet casts a glance at her tattoo.
"Never mind this," she rolls down her sleeves. "It's a bygone. Something from a long time ago."
"I guess you are from one of the Mwangi tribes?" the sheriff asks Saurek. "Your skills are most certainly welcome here."
"What better place indeed," she agrees with Trem and Ansado. "A growing colony that one day will turn into a prosperous city, I hope."
"An adventurer, are you?" the woman smiles to tiefling faintly, her eyes wander off for a moment, but she immediately gathers herself.
She looks at Sulia with interest.
"An angel you say? Congratulations, you are the first aasimar in Pridon's Hearth," her eyes shifted to Visruþ when she says that. "And you are the first tiefling. What a contrast, you two"
Sulia Farwander |
Sulia looks at Visruþ with a smile on her face. "Look! Where first of our kind buddies! That's fantastic!" she gives him a wink. "I like being first. Doesn't it make you feel like a winner?"
She turns her attention back to Adaela. "Hey, so what can we do to get started? I'm sure we will need to establish ourselves before we can really get settled in, so if there's anything you had in mind that we could do to help, I'm sure we'd be glad to."
Trem Kiran |
Looking at the tattoo, Trem can't help but wonder. She's either hiding something or ran away from it... Can't judge her, I'm doing the same thing.
"Of course she has something in mind, she wouldn't have call us here if she didn't." Looking at Adaela Praet with a sly smile. "So the question is why us? What got you so preoccupy that you would recruit a group of people fresh off the boat and not locals?"
GM Madcaster |
"Pridon's Hearth is an insular community," Adaela Praet begins. "We don't have a lot of contacts with the outside world. So we keep a fort to the south, to keep a watch for potential problems. There haven't been any so far. Nothing serious, at least."
She pauses.
"Fort Breakthrough hasn't sent a single report in nearly two weeks. I would be happy to write that off as a simple laziness and poor organization. But they are usually eager to return here, even for just a single day."
"I want to send a small team to check on them. The militia is understaffed and the locals are not soldiers or mercenaries," she looks you in the eyes. "New arrivals - new people. Exactly what I need."
"Your task will be to investigate the fort and to report back. Not for free of course," she ends her speech.
Trem Kiran |
Looking at Visruþ. "I thought the halfling were the lowest of the low over there."
After Adaela Praet is done talking.
"That make sense. So, now that we know the "what", we just need to come to a understanding about the "how much"." Trem as a smile on his face as he lean foward. "How far is that fort, and what supplies can we expect to help us on our trek. Of course, we would need enough for the return trip, just incase the inimaginable happended over there."
Taking a glass in his hands, Trem lean back to evaluate the rest of the group willingness to participate.
Sau're'!K of The Mulaa Tribe |
Saurek nods and begins thinking about the practical matters of this kind of trip. Like where are we actually going?
How far to the south is the fort... and what kind of terrain lies between here and there? How far from the coast line is it? Better yet... do you have a map?
GM Madcaster |
"Thank you," Adaela Praet nods with a relieved expression. "The fort is about twelve miles to the south."
She reaches to the scroll case leaning against the chair leg.
"I have a map, you can see the details here," she pulls out the scroll, giving it to Saurek.
"Small dinosaurs, a few monsters - nothing a small garrison can't handle," she answers to Trem and Visruþ.
"The reward is fifty gold pieces for each of you. You will also receive a hundred gold pieces in advance to cover any expenses," Adeala gets a piece of paper from her pocket. "Show this to Baldra Sifreth in the Countinghouse of Abadar."
"I suggest you visit a few places before setting out," she continues. "Heri’s Conservatorium, our apothecary, Northwind Smithy and the Oyin Emporium, for anything you can't find in the former two."
Adaela then explains where they are.
"Good luck."
Sulia Farwander |
"All right!" Sulia says cheerfully. "We have a quest, we have money, and we are going shopping! Let's go!" she will gladly lead the way around town.
Once everyone's gotten anything they need, she turns to Saurek. "Why don't you show us what you can do? Your first bit of guide work starts right now!"
Sau're'!K of The Mulaa Tribe |
Saurek takes the map tracking his finger along the route the party is to take.
Well if we head out quickly then we should be able to make it there early this afternoon. In that case if nothing is wrong we could come right back and be home a little after dark. That's assuming fast travel without taking the time to keep out of sight. If we go slower with Andsado scouting... we should arrive there this evening a little before dusk. Lets plan to stay at least the night there and if something is wrong we may need to stay in the vicinity of the fort a few days.
I would advise that we may want to buy some camping supplies and emergency food with that 100 gold. Also it looks like we have no way to deal with swarms at all. perhaps The Otin Emporium will have some acid flasks...
5x Acid flask (10 gp each)
2x Alkali flask (15 gp each)
5x Tinder twig (1 gp each)
2x Bedroll or Hammock (1 sp each)
1x cooking kit (3gp)
23x trail rations (5sp per serving)
3 sp left over
Sulia Farwander |
Pretty nice homework there! I'm okay with the shopping list.
Sulia turns to the rest of the group. "Well, you heard our expert, let's pick up these items!"
She will lean closer to Saurek when they're moving. "Are swarms really that bad?" she queries quietly.
Visruþ |
"Those supplies sound prudent!"
I agree; those goodies sound, well, good!
For himself, to deal with swarms.
And a second belt pouch to put them in.
Flasks: 40 GP for the pair
Belt Pouch: 1 GP
Cash left: 48 GP
Trem Kiran |
Listening to Saurek, Trem does the calculation in his head. That shopping list is good and all, but we aren't getting a lot of gold left over.
"Alright, let's go shopping then, I hope the merchant as enough for everyone. First stop, the Countinghouse of Abadar."
Once he has his gold, Trem goes with the group to The Otin Emporium to gather the supplies. He also tries to see if he can get a group rebate.
Inside the store, "Hello there! Are you the owner of this fine establishment? If so, I come here with a good business proposal. My friends and I are going on a small expedition on behalf of Adaela Praet. Nothing really dangerous, just some standard scouting and reporting. Now our guide here tell us that we are in need of some supplies and here is where you can help. We have this somewhat long list of what is needed and we would like to make our purchasses here. Now if you could show us how competitive your prices are, we could promise to come to you first to sell any treasures we will find during our mission. What do you say? Can we come to an agreement?"
Diplomacy: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (10) + 9 = 19
GM Madcaster |
The old woman interrupts Trem in the middle of his speech with displeased face.
"Shush, young man," she clicks her tongue. "I know where you're going with this. Let me tell you something - don't forget where you are. In case your memory fails you, and it is a pity in such a young age, you are in a town where only three hundred people live. There's not much of a choice in shops, is it?"
She pauses, her expression softens, although she still frowns.
"Now, my name is Mirya Oyin. I won't give you any discount, no matter how much you beg, but you're saying Adaela gave you a job?"
"That girl finally sends someone to that fort?" Mirya thinks for a moment, than goes in the back room for a couple of minutes. When she returns, she carries a shabby backpack.
"Tell you what. Deliver the farm equipment inside this backpack to the Witterwil farmstead, and I let you use it, as long as you run some errands for me from time to time."
Mirya then kicks you out of her shop with the backpack and your purchases, grumbling something about Cassia and the mess.
The town has completely awoke, people scurrying here and there, sounds of hammers, saws, chatter - all the usual things even in the small town like this.
The way to the fort goes by without any incident. You make a stop at the Witterwil farmstead, delivering the parcel as Mirya asked, and then continue onward. Animals stay a considerable distance away from you, only squawking birds sometimes fly a bit closer. When you arrive to your destination, the sun has already crossed the zenith.
The fort is a simple square structure, walled in with rough logs and perched on a short hill overlooking the nearby marshlands and coastline. Two-story towers anchor each corner of the fort, connected by wooden ramparts. The shattered remains of a heavy wooden door lie strewn across this opening in the log walls. Several of the flinders are trampled into the dirt. Some pieces of wood still remain attached to large metal hinges at the sides of the exposed entrance.
If you don't feel like rolling, everyone who has at least one rank in Spellcraft has seen such a bag. Teacher, mentor, merchant - it's your choice.
Don't forget to decide who keeps what. And to write that in your sheets. I'll trust you with your bookkeeping.
Also guys, it's "Oyin". Not "t", "y". Just in case you thought that was a typo. :)
Sulia Farwander |
I'll take the free understanding!
"Oh! A handy haversack! My family uses these a lot since they're really helpful!" she declares, looking it over. "It always weighs the same, and has more space on the inside than normal! There's also multiple pockets!"
I think with the way weight is handled, anyone could use this instead of a normal backpack, but I'm leaning towards Trem using it because he won't be in melee much
Trem Kiran |
After leaving the store, Trem make sure to place everything in his bag so that the usefull stuff is within easy reach.
"Well, at least we got something out of this. I am a bit disapointed though. People just don't appreciate the fine art of negociation like they used too." Looking at the bag of supply. "Bigger on the inside you say? That is definitely usefull."
When everyone is ready to leave, he looks at Saurek. "Lead on my good friend. Let's get this adventure going."
After a good long trek, he is quite happy to finaly see the fort.
"There we made it, and not a moment too soon. Maybe I'll be able to rest my poor feet for a moment..." Has he is talking, Trem finally noticed the fact that the doors seem to have exploded. "Oh... I guess not." Looking at no one in particular. "Do you think anyone is still in there?"
Ansado of the Ekujae |
"That is indeed a useful item."
Ansado takes the lead during the trek, keeping a watchful eye for hazards.
Upon arrival, Ansado seems to assess the fort.
"My guess is that if there were people here they would be attempting to guard this entrance."
Ansado draws his bow and begins moving warily to the entrance.

When the party receives their supplies.... I would advise we each take an acid flask. That way if a swarm shows up we can immediately send a volley, some will hit and some will miss but what happens is what happens. The two Alkali flasks we can give to Ansado... he seems most skilled with such things. Everyone should also carry several days of their own food in case they get separated from everyone else. The rest of the supplies can go in the Haversack.
She will lean closer to Saurek when they're moving. "Are swarms really that bad?" she queries quietly.
Saurek's lips pull back in a grimace that makes his face seem more reptilian than normal. Nothing in the Jungle is very dangerous if it can be avoided... and the animals that generally make up swarms are not at all threatening. But if you get a enough small creatures like ants, snakes, rats, or bats, working together then yes swarms can be very dangerous. My first pet... a small Compsognathus was killed by a swarm of army ants.
As the party approaches the fort...
Ansado? How much do you trust your skills as a scout? We could stay here if you want to subtly take a look around. Or would you rather all go in together?
Sulia Farwander |
"Well... whatever happened here, it was probably very dangerous." Sulia comments on the obvious. "If you need someone to back you up, I'm here. If a fight breaks out try to stay in sight of me so I can help!"
Trem Kiran |
Seeing others drawing their weapons, Trem realize he should probably do the same thing.
He take out his crossbow and make sure to load it. Sarari also unsheathed her longsword as she take a more foward position.
She stays within 20 feet from Trem
Ansado of the Ekujae |
I'll scout an area, if it's dangerous I'll give a warning, otherwise I'll tell you it's clear.
Ansado moves into the main courtyard, bow at the ready.

Looking as the elf and the tiefling head towards the fort, Trem start to be slightly anxious. This would be is first battle, if it come to it. He knows that he can count on Sarari to keep whatever might attack at bay while he shoot at them, but still, how would he fair in a big battle. Looking at the others, he tries to imagine little senario of who would do what in a fight. Trying to remember last night meal and what everyone said they could do.
"What could have destroyed those doors?" Not looking at anyone but the doors, it's hard to tell if he is asking the question or thinking out loud.
Sulia Farwander |
"A huge dinosaur, maybe?"Sulia asks, looking at Saurek's companion.
She draws her weapon after setting her shield on her arm. She closes her eyes momentarily, centering herself.
GM Madcaster |
The moment Ansado steps into the gates he hears a sharp snap and a heavy beam hits him in the stomach. That's 5 damage from a trap. It seems, that whoever attacked the fort left a few things after themselves.
In the courtyard he immediately spots three small dinosaurs having a snack. Unfortunately, they also notice him. Three tiny dinosaurs quickly gang up on Ansado and despite their bites barely hurting him, the elf feels numbness spreading around the bite. That's 2 non-lethal damage and 2 Str damage.

With dinosaurs dead, you can finally inspect the place more closely. Across this wide, muddy courtyard, three buildings cling to the sides of the fort’s interior walls. Those to the southwest and the east are sealed tight, while the door to the building in the northwest is slightly ajar. Two human bodies — quickly decaying in the tropical sun — lie in the mud, one with a spear poking out from its chest.
A sturdy stone well sits before the northernmost wall of the fort. An empty bucket hangs from a pulley over the dark shaft. A well-used dagger is embedded in the waterlogged bucket.
A fence between the southwestern and northwestern buildings forms a simple animal pen. The mutilated carcasses of a half-dozen animals litter the pen. Bite and claw marks edge a section of the fence that has been shorn away, while the shoulder-high gate remains shut.
