Shalin's flurry of blows leaves the mage looking much the worse for wear, as ribs crack and even a bit of skull is dented in.
The mage makes a break for it, running away as fast as its frame will allow it. As it runs the hand remains behind, reaching out again for Shalina.

Shalina chases over the deck, dodging molding crates and snarled ropes. With a leap she jumps a barrel and smashes the glaive downward on the retreating mage. With a crash it dissolves into dust, the glowing diadem rolling under some old sails.
Finally she has a chance to see the others. The rest of the skeletons have crossed over to the Fylor. She can see Tekk upright, the paladin holding off a circle of foes with a glowing sword, blood running down his side. Berd is in the crows nest, firing crossbow bolts down.
She sees no sign of Partell's crew, but she does seen a tangle of vines holding some of the skeletons in place, keeping them from overwhelming Tekk.
Shalina Sekh-at |
Shalina dives after the diadem and pockets it before standing and looking around.
Seeing Tekk surrounded, her protective nature kicks in. Even though she's pretty hurt herself she finds the rope attached to her grappling hook from before. Grasping it tightly, she gives the swing back to the Fylor a try. The boats had lost some of their momentum and she had a better idea of what to expect on her second attempt. It was either that or she was highly motivated this time. Whatever the reason, Shalina flies gracefully through the air and drops beside Tekk within the circle of skeletons. "Miss me?"

The paladin grins, but she can see he is pale from blood loss. "Are you saying I've been heroic with no one to watch me?"
Closer in she can see Partell behind some crates, grappling with a skeleton, his muscles heaving. No sign of the other members of his party.
"Have you found an off switch?" The paladin asks, blocking a blow from a rusty cutlass.
There are five skeletons around you
Shalina Sekh-at |
Shalina pulls the diadem out of her pocket. This was the only thing I found. Hopefully breaking it is the off switch."
arcana: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (15) + 12 = 27
Is it still a sunder roll to smash it or do we assume that she smashes it?
Shalina Sekh-at |
Or can she use it to control the skeletons? Provided that's what it does...
GM Mowque |
It is unattended. Strictly you'd still have to roll but Shalina is a strong lass..
Shalina can tell it is radiating necomantic power. With a heave she smashes it down on deck, where it shatters in a greenish cloud. Instantly the other skeletons collapse into piles of inert bones.
Partell is suddenly fighting a pair of bony hands. "What?" he stammers, confused.
From over the side Shalina can hear a gruff dwarvn voice, 'Overboard, lower a rope."
Besides her Tekk sinks to the deck, sighing in relief and in pain.
"Well, we survived another one." Blood pools around his folded legs and his eyelids flicker.
Berd slides down the mast next to them and takes one look at the paladin. 'Blood loss. We need to heal him, now!"
Shalina Sekh-at |
Shalina was already kneeling beside Tekk. "Lower a rope for Travoc while I help him." Shalina covers Tekk's bleeding wounds with her hands and hums comfortingly while letting the healing magic flow from her into him.
CMW on Tekk
"Come on, stay with me. You still have a lot of protecting to do." Once Tekk stabilizes, Shalina allows herself to succumb to the sheer exhaustion of this last fight. She knew she was also in rough shape but she just needed a moment to rest.
GM Mowque |
The healing stops the bleeding and Tekk's eyes flicker open, "I think I'll be ok. How about you? I didn't see you for awhile..."
Then Partell is there, sword in hand. An ugly fear passes through Shalina but he says, "Travoc has a wand of healing."
Soon Berd has the dwarf hauled aboard. Clinging to him is Telenyu, looking very wet. There is no sign of her sister. In a few moments Travoc has the wand out and is healing everyone. Luckily it seems like the wand had full charges and soon Shalina and Tekk are standing.
Your HP are at 70/77
Berd looks at the ships, inspecting for damage. "No rest for the weary folks. We have to get a move on, we will be taking on water soon." With a grunt he spits into the water and grimaces, "The Fylor may not be afloat for long. I won't know for sure unless we can get her ashore."
Shalina Sekh-at |
As Travoc heals Shalina she gives him a word of thanks and a smile. Then looking around she asks in a low voice, "Where's Junhae?"
Shalina is bone-weary but Berd's words spur her to action. The last thing she wants is another trip into the water. Sighing, she moves to her previous location with Tekk and gets to work. "Berd, thanks for keeping us afloat and for sailing Fylor with such precision. Do you know how much further it is to land?" It was then that his comment about taking on water sunk in, "Do you need any of us to bail water?"
As Shalina and Tekk work she asks, "So what happened over here? Any thrilling heroics you want to tell me about?"
GM Mowque |
Tekk shakes his head, "Fighting undead is something I can do, the gods give me strength to do it. Still, I prefer when you are at my side. Berd isn't nearly so good in a fight."
Next
Shalina's answer about Junhae is given as Partell's face falls and he leaps into the water.
Travoc says, "She went overboard, sword to the gut. I couldn't find her."
Even as everyone else makes way to sail Partell swims around the boats, shouting her name, diving to look for her.
Finally Berd comes to Shalina, "We have to go or we will have to start bailing. Convince him to give up." He jerks a thumb at the still paddling half-orc.
Shalina Sekh-at |
Shalina smiles, "I've gotten used to fighting beside you too. I didn't like being all alone on the other ship. That skeleton captain could cast magic which was unexpected and quite painful, hence the burned and torn clothing. How come you were bleeding so badly?
Shalina's smile evaporates at the news that Junhae had gone overboard. Her opinion of Partell improves as he dives in the water after one of his people because she knew it was something she'd have done if it had been Tekk or Berd.
Shalina gives Berd an incredulous look, "Me? Convince him? Surely one of his crew would be better..." But when no one made a move, she sighs and moves to the railing.
"Partell, we can't wait any longer or everyone else's life is at risk because our ship is taking on water. Think about Travoc and Telenyu. They need you back on board, now more than ever." Then she adds, "The other ship isn't going anywhere and there's some wood debris floating in the water. I promise that when we sail back this way that we'll check the ship again just in case she manages to climb aboard if we missed her." Shalina knew it was a longshot but sometimes you needed to cling to the impossible or the grief would overwhelm you.
diplomacy: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (13) + 8 = 21
GM Mowque |
The half-orc doesn't answer but when Shalina throws down the rope, he silently grabs on and heaves himself upward. Still silent he takes his place at the sails and begins getting the ship into motion, Shalina doing the same.
Berd gets the ship underway, the craft reeling and bobbing more now. The mutilated man runs all over the deck, into the hold, as if his presence could hold her together. While he does so, Shalina gets a look from Telenyu that makes the previous stares look like flirtation. The cold elf eyes cut into her from across the deck...
Finally they see the other shore and come up on it. Like where they entered, it is a hole cut into the side of the stone wall of the Cistern. As they approach, Shalina notes it isn't as well-made as the entrance.
The stone is unevenly cut, and not smoothed. Large timber beams hold up sections. There is no dock here, only the empty pilings left, sticking out of the still water.
That mystry is soon solved as they seen woodchips and signs of ship-making at the edge of the water.
"They used the wood to build the ships." Berd remarks. "I wonder if it is was the skeletons..." As they tie the boat up at the tiny landing Berd nods, "It is good news for us, they left enough supplies to fix our boat."
As the man starts looking through the piles of wood and other gear, Shalina can see a path leading up into a dark crack into the wall. It is the only exit.
Tekk comes up, "Whatevr we came for, it must be up there."
Shalina Sekh-at |
Shalina knows there is nothing she can say to make the loss of Junhae any easier so she leaves the others alone. She notes Telenyu's even colder demeanor and for the first time wonders if the half-elf feels about Shalina like Shalina feels about Baskir. The bard shivers at that implication if it's true.
Thankful to Berd for the distraction she asks, "What kind of help do you need to fix Fylor? And how long do you think it'll take? Can we explore or do you need us here?"
"That does seem like our only choice for paths. I can scout up ahead to see if there are any possible surprises."
GM Mowque |
Berd looks up from the pile of lumber, "She isn't as bad as I thought. A little sweat, a little hammering..."
He shrugs, "I think we can handle things here, Tekk and I."
Then Partell comes up, face set. "I will go with you. That way both sides will get a fair chance at anything we find."
Tekk's face grows stern as well and he stand sup, obviously ready to say something.
Shalina Sekh-at |
She looks at Partell warily, "Is the rest of your crew ok with that arrangement? Because it would just be the two of us then."
Seeing the look on Tekk's face, Shalina moves first to him and gives him a hug so she can whisper in his ear, "Protect me from Telenyu and keep her here." Then she claps him on the arm, "Looks like you're off the hook this time."
Shalina isn't stoked about having to be on guard the whole entire time she explores. Partell may have shown that he cares about his own people but she wasn't part of his crew and he wasn't Tekk. That automatically made him a potential threat. But it seemed like the fairest option and at least Tekk could keep an eye on Telenyu. She gives the half-orc a small smile, "You make a lot of sense. Hopefully we won't have to find out how well we fight together." She gives him and his gear an appraising look before asking, "How quiet are you?"
GM Mowque |
Tekk grunts and says, "Anything happens, blow the whistle. I'll be there."
Partell considers her then answers, 'Quiet enough." He does not smile back but shoulders his own small pack.
Together they venture into the crack. Unlike what she expected the half-orc doesn't press against her but keeps his distance, going first into the tight space. It leads into a cragged and winding passage, both of them squeezing past rough stone. The entire time Partell is silent, eyes sharper in the gloom.
Finally it opens into a slightly larger room, carved from the stone. Parts of the floor are covered in wooden boards, while other bits are just bare stone. Along the far all wall is an iron barred cage, inside sit a few barrels, crates and other containers. Dim magical lighting holds back the darkness.
Perception: 1d20 + 14 ⇒ (13) + 14 = 27
Something doesn't seem quite right to Shalina, as Partell begins to cross the room.
Shalina Sekh-at |
As they walk Shalina says quietly. "I'm sorry for your loss. Tekk and I recently lost someone and I know it's awful." Her voice is barely audible when she adds, "His name was Fylor."
"Stop!" Shalina commands. "Something is off. Possibly a trap of some sort but it's best if I investigate further. Don't move."
Shalina Sekh-at |
"I can't quite put my finger on what, it's more like a feeling. However, the fact that the flooring is different throughout the cavern is suspicious."
Shalina takes a closer look at the floor and the walls.

Shalina's careful inspection leaves no stone upturned. She soon discovers the cavern used to have a wood floor throughout, she finds traces of nailholes and other supports but it has all be ripped away.
This makes her analyze the boards closer. It soon becomes apparent they are mere illusions, that once matched the whole floor. She still can't see through them, but guesses they lead to pits or some other type of danger.
'Nicely done." Partell says when she explains. 'So we avoid stepping on them then?"
And to save time
Shalina's lock picking skills come easily to her today and she manages to open the iron cage at the far end without much trouble. Even the remnants of an Arcane Lock spell isn't enough to keep her out. The gate opens with a rusty creak.
Shalina Sekh-at |

Shalina rifles through the crates, mostly filled with unknown objects. It takes time and Partell joins in. Finally he upends a heavy crate and objects scatter to the floor among them is the part of the key.
Both of them stare at it, eyes locked Slowly the half-orc straightens and says, "Who gets to carry it?" A hand drifts to his sword, casually, slowly.
Shalina Sekh-at |
"I think the fact that you'd be stuck in a pit or dead right now if it wasn't for me, earns me the right to carry it. If it makes you feel better, I'll let you carry something else of mine for safe keeping."
Shalina Sekh-at |
How does Partell know about the key parts or that Shalina has the other three?
Shalina Sekh-at |
We weren't necessarily keeping it secret but she specifically avoided mentioning it to them directly. I'm ok with them having overheard something if it helps the story. It would just affect how she answers.
GM Mowque |
No, That is fine (you make the story). I didn't know. I will change it. In this case, Partell doesn't even know what you are looking for.
Shalina rifles through the crates, mostly filled with unknown objects. It takes time and Partell joins in. Finally he upends a heavy crate and objects scatter to the floor among them is the part of the key.
The half-orc ignores it, not knowing what it is.
After a bit he says, "Nothing here, after all?'
Shalina Sekh-at |
Shalina picks up the last piece of the key, keeping her expression level while inside she was doing cartwheels.
Shalina feels somewhat bad for not sharing everything with Partell at that moment but she wants to get back to Tekk and Berd before mentioning anything further. However, the more her mind begins to race the more she thinks it may be better to speak to Partell alone and not with Telenyu around.
She pauses at Partell's question and then sighs. Sitting down on one of the crates she motions at the one beside her and says, "Sit down, Partell. We need to hash a few things out."
Assuming he sits
"There wasn't nothing. I found the last piece of something needed to go to another level of this place. It seems only fair that we take you and your crew with us. However, I need you to agree to two things before we continue or else there's no deal." Shalina's muscles tense somewhat, ready to bolt if he acts unfavorably in any way.
Shalina Sekh-at |
Shalina stands, mirroring Partell. "I'm telling you this because it's not in my nature to create conflict and once we're back on the other shore there would be conflict if you found out I wasn't completely forthcoming, correct? I don't expect you to fully trust me but I also don't want to fight you or any of your people if I don't have to. You have my respect even if you don't fully have my trust. I hope you're able to say the same about me.
"Which brings me to my terms. Firstly, I've been tasked with finding a specific item. It is non-negotiable that I get it when we come across it. It is a piece of an amulet and has no use apart from the other pieces which I've been gathering for my employer. We evenly split all other loot that we find."
Shalina pauses, waiting for Partell's response to her first term. "Secondly, as I've already said, I don't want to fight either you or your people. You need to promise me that Tekk, Berd, and myself aren't physically harmed or betrayed in any way by you or any of your people. When this is all done, we go our separate ways."
GM Mowque |
There is a long pause as Partell considers her, weighing her words. His thick fingers drum against his muscular arms, tapping out a slow tattoo. Slowly, he speaks, "Agreed."
He sticks out a well-worn hand, "Thanks for telling me." he says gruffly, "I will do what I can for both of your terms." Grimly he smiles, "I would say that anyway though, wouldn't I?" Shalina's gut tells her he is being honest enough though. A knife in the back just got less likely.
To save time
As they are leaving the room, Shalina leading the way across the traps, suddenly she hears a female voice.
"I thought I'd find you together!"
Telenyu is standing at the exit, a bow drawn in her hand, an arrow ready on the string.
"Didn't take either of you to forget about Juhae, did it?" She snarls, hair tossed wildly, "I figured I would find you rutting, but perhaps you already took care of that."
With a savage grin, full of rage, despair and loathing, she fires the arrow at Shalina. It...misses?
Hitting the ground at her feet it explodes in a sticky collection of tangling braids. The goo twists around her feet and legs, turning instantly to a thick, glue-like substance, pinning her.
Roll a Reflex Save. DC 15 or be glued to the floor. If you make the save you are merely 'entangled'. If you fail the save, you need to make a DC Str. check or hit the goo with 15 points of slashing damage. After this you'd still be entangled. Clear?
Shalina Sekh-at |

As the arrow flew towards her Shalina has two thoughts...Move! and where's Tekk? As she moves, she can feel her legs becoming entangled but she does what Tekk told her to do - she pulls out the whistle and gives a couple shrill tweets.
This was precisely why Shalina had been worried but she was beginning to lose her patience. "Of course we're together!" Shalina snaps. "The plan was to explore together." As she tries to free herself she calls to Partell over her shoulder, "Talk some sense into her, will you?"

The archaeologist recognizes the potential danger she's in, even if Partell doesn't side with Telenyu. She contorts her body to get herself free while making sure she doesn't leave herself vulnerable to another attack. She relies on her instinct and luck to escape her predicament.
GM Mowque |
Nicely done. You are not entangled or stuck. You can move forward to attack Telenuya if you like.
The half-elf's face goes rigid as she sees the bard free herself from the sticky goo. She ingores Shalina's cries, and strings another arrow.
"Teleneyu, listen to me." Partell says, "It was my fault your sister dies, not her. I know I promised to keep her safe...I tried."
"Not good enough, and I am sure staying with this...person is helping you get over your vow."
She half-elf fires two arrows in a blizzard of speed.

This could go horribly wrong but she's going to try anyways.
Shalina growls at the half-elf, her patience gone, replaced by her building rage. She springs at Telenyu with surprising strength and speed.

Shalina hisses in her ear, "No one is with anyone. If you want him, take him. Don't watch and glare from shadows."
GM Mowque |
Just failed that grapple, sad. This would have ended much better.
Shalina runs and jumps the distance with ease, her boots hitting the hard stone near the bow-wielding half-elf. A startled look crosses Telenyu's face as the large bard bounds toward her.
The half-elf manages to slip the bearhug though, ducking and rolling. Soon the woman is running among the traps at Partell, and she draws a short blade.
"You let her die and then you run off....I'll kill you!" With tears in her eyes, she lashes out at the burly half-orc.
The large man dodges, showing considerable skill doing so. He catches her blade and pushes her away, trying to tell her to calm down. His push twists her ankle, she staggers back....and falls into one of the traps.
The half-elf vanishes below the 'wood', like she fell into water. A second later they hear a loud scrape, of metal on metal. The illusion fades and reveals a pit int he floor. Partell is kneeling at the side, shaking his head.
'No, no.."
Shalina Sekh-at |
Shalina sprawls on the floor as Telenyu escapes her grasp. She watches in horror as the half-elf's grief drives her to such recklessness. Shalina jumps to her feet and yells, "No!" just as Telenyu disappears. Her body cringes and she squeezes her eyes shut as the sound of a trap springing echoes through the cavern.
Her voice comes out weakly, full of regret. "Partell, I'm so sorry...I tried, I tried to restrain her but she was too quick."
Can't say I'm completely upset because she never would have trusted Telenyu along and Partell may have insisted on coming anyways - there would have been awkwardness.
The bard watches the half-orc warily to see how he would react to the new turn of events.
GM Mowque |
The half-orc slowly stands up, "We should go. This was all for nothing." His voice is tinged with sadness but not overwhelming, If anything he seems better then after Junhae.
"Lead the way, Shalina."
Even as he says it though, Tekk appears at the entrance, sword glowing hand. "Where is she? Teleynu?" Shalina sees dry blood around the paladin's ear.
Shalina Sekh-at |
"She chose poorly and fell," Shalina says sadly.
Catching sight of the blood, she rushes forward to inspect the paladin. "More importantly, are you ok? What happened?"
GM Mowque |
You chose poorly...right out of Indiana Jones
Tekk rubs the back of his head. "She threw a thunderstone. Deafened all of us, I blacked out. By the time I got up she had already got away...." Shame and anger fill his voice. "I am tired of letting this happen. I am never letting you out of my sight again." His voice holds no joke, not this time.
Partell shrugs, "I guessed that, Tele had a thing for thunderstones. Let's get out of here."
Shalina Sekh-at |
Is Tekk more or less ok? She will CLW him just in case.
"Are you sure you're ok? Blacking out is never a good sign. It looks like you may have hit your head. Here let me." She hums soothingly and touches the side of Tekk's head. "Are Berd and Travoc ok?"
At Tekk's last comment she gives him a half smile. "I guess that means you're following me back rather than leading the way." Even though she knows Tekk isn't in the mood, she adds teasingly, "I seem to remember a similar conversation not so long ago."
The sight of the beach is a welcomed one. Calling out for Berd she asks, "When can we get going? I've had enough of this level."
She'll heal herself once they're on the ship again.
GM Mowque |
Tekk is all right. No need for a spell.
He lets her inspect then shakes his head, his short black beard crusted with sweat. "This isn't a joke Shalina. Every time I let you go, I fail my duty. Not happening again...I mean it."
They head back to the Beach, Partell following. Berd is fine, overseeing a few repairs to the ship. He grins and waves, adding, "I figured Tekk could handle the half-elf. I'm no good in a fight." he lowers his voice and his grin falters, 'I don't trust this dwarf as far as I can throw him."
Shalina notes Travoc and Partell talking.
"We can get underway as soon as you like." hearing her tone, the wounded man nods and they set off.
The trip back ins't as fast as the one here. Even with his repairs, the Fylor is a leaking, limping vessel. About halfway back Berd takes a trip into the hold and comes up, face set.
'We are taking on water. Any ideas to slow it? Just bailing might not be enough..."
Shalina Sekh-at |
Shalina's eyes flashed briefly, "I know this isn't a joke, Tekk. But I'd rather not be thought about as a duty to ease your conscience."
As Partell talks with Travoc, she pulls Tekk and Berd to her. "I may have done something foolish but I was trying to avoid the confrontation that we ended up having anyways. I told Partell about the key because I found the last piece. I got him to agree that no harm would come to us by him or his people and that when I find the artifact, it's mine. Now with everything that's happened, I'm not sure what they'll do. Partell seems reasonable but it would be best to be on guard."
Shalina frowns at Berd's news. "If only I still had my glue scroll but sadly I used it to stop," she looks at Tekk, "a couple pursuers." She dug through her things looking for anything useful. She pulls out the quickfreeze oil. "I'm not sure if this will work but if it turns the water to ice, we may be able to get back to shore before it melts. Berd, you'd know better. Will that work?"
GM Mowque |
The man frowns, weighing the bottle in his hands. "I've never tried that. It might work, but get buckets ready. Even if it does, we'll be knee deep in water."
Below, they watch the mutilated man smash the vial of quickfreeze oil against the side of the boat. A thin layer of ice soon grows, locking the wet wood into ice. The seep of water slows to a trickle.
'Wow, it worked! The ice is bonding with the wood..." he shakes his head. 'Let's go!"
They pour on the sails to get back before the thin ice sheath melts. They barely make it, tying up just as the ice gives way and water pours in. All of them jump off the boat as it slowly settles into the water, hug bubbles forming, shaking the entire vessel.
Berd bows, 'Farwell, Fylor. She was a good vessel."
Shalina notes Tekk wiping away a tear, and knows it is not for the boat.
Partell shrugs, turning, Travoc at his side 'Now what?"
Shalina Sekh-at |
Shalina stands beside Tekk and whispers, "He carried us safely as far as he needed."
Turning to their new companions, Shalina reminds Partell of their arrangment, "You keep your word and I keep mine."
She motions back down the pathway they had walked the previous evening. "The door is back that way."

The half-orc stiffens, "You accusing me of something?"
The five of them head back toward the door, walking through the damp chambers. It takes them some time but they soon find themselves faced with the sealed metal door, with the strange keyhole.
Shalina soon fits the key parts together, feeling the heavy weight in her hand. It hadn't been easy or quick but she has finally managed to put the puzzle together, to find all the clues. But what lay beyond?
Shalina Sekh-at |
She shakes her head, "Of course not, Partell. Just wanting to make sure we were all on the same page before moving forward."
"Keep a watch out for Baskir or anyone else while I figure this out," she tells the others.
She looks over the keyhole and tries to determine if there are any traps before inserting the key.
