Any insight on the gates?

Ary canted her head to the side slightly as she was corrected by Paza. She stayed where she was while the others went to investigate the gate. "So you do or don't think we should kill it..? If it's just hunting and surviving, killing it for sport isn't something I'm personally interested in... but I feel like I remember my dad saying they were really destructive... but he also told me that deer had antlers so they could poke out your eyes if they caught you alone. It helped me get over not wanting to kill them when he taught me to hunt... she smiled wistfully. "Kind of causes a problem now, when I need to know things for certain. How did you come to learn about boars, Paza?"

Paza blinks, puzzled. "We can eat it," she says. "It could kill us. Others of us. And we can eat it. We're not hunting for fun." She practically spits the word 'fun'.

Ary smirked at the second option of eating it, but then frowned at the girl's attitude towards fun, less than a second later. What in the world could happen to a person to cause them to view things so... clear cut. She'd hoped to use the boar question as a segue into asking what she knew about bears, to perhaps defuse that situation at least a little, but the girl had forgotten all about the question, or simply didn't care about it in the first place. After a moment, Ary nodded ascent once more.

"That is certainly true... this place could use a restocking, and boar hunting wouldn't hurt. Speaking of... what in the world do thieves use stolen leathers for? Food, I can understand, but trade goods suggest you trade. Why trade when you can simply take whatever you like? And who would trade with the bandits? Certainly, they could make armor and the like, but how much armor can one group of people need?" asked the follower of Iomedae :p

"Trade with other scavengers?" Paza suggests. "Use? Leather rots with time. Leather and furs are useful."

She frowns. "There were bears where I grew up. Bears look out for the bear. And their cubs. Risk your life to kill food, and a bear walks up and steals it. Bears kill bears over kills."

I'd missed your question on bears, sorry! ^^; Also, Paza's disdain was towards hunting for fun, not fun in and of itself.

she asked where she learned about boars, and was going to broach the topic of bears once she answered... since she had no trouble with the ranger with a horse, and so he spoke to Oleg fine, the ranger with a bear was clearly a bear problem :p. Though it was also curiosity as a whole for Ary. She's interested in everyone here, but Paza's demeanor is tweaking her favored enemy sense. Something doesn't entirely compute :p

The door to the main house opens up and a young woman with long blonde hair pulled back by a scarlet kerchief emerges, speaking in a soft tone, "Oleg, dear, we're all out of- oh my!" That she has been cooking is evident from the apron worn over her clothes and the scent of some sort of stew wafting out of the house now that the door is open. She glances around the open yard at everyone, then settles her eyes on Paza, "Oh, you poor dear! Whatever has happened to your shoes? Here, come inside and we can see if my spare pair might happen to fit you."

Oleg sighs with exasperation at his wife, "Svetlana, I'm sure if the girl wanted shoes, she'd be wearing them. These are some..." He hesitates, perhaps about to have said 'mercenaries' again, then continues, "...adventurers sent by the right proper and nice Swordlords to deal with the bandit problem. Oh, and um, it seems there's actually six of them, not five, sorry for not updating you on that."

He then interjects into the conversation Ary and Paza are having, "Don't know that Tuskgutter's actually killed anyone, for all his vicious name, but old Vekkel lost a leg to that beast, and there's been plenty of hunters with stories of barely escaping with their lives. They mostly go for easier prey though. Deer, elk, sometimes even a thylacine, but it's not just Tuskgutter to worry about, they have to be careful not to upset the Fair Folk either."

Geligee Geerwander:
Sorry, I posted before I'd even had a shower or breakfast and somehow forgot to respond to your skill check.

As it stands, the main issue with the gates is whether the wood or the rusted hinges would give first if someone tried to force the gates closed. The simplest thing to do would be to remove the hinges altogether, clean them with grease and a steel brush if the Levetons have one, get them well greased, and then reattach them to the gate. It wouldn't be a task Oleg could accomplish solo, or even with the help of just one or two others, but with six or seven people working together, it shouldn't be much trouble at all. You would also need a shovel or spade to uproot all the weeds and get the ground nice and level to the gates can freely swing once the hinges are replaced.

Paza grunts. "No," she tells Svetlana. "But thank you. I got..." The girl unslings her backpack and roots around in it for a minute before she extracts a boot, waving it in the air before she stuffs it back in. "I have the other one, too. Somewhere. Don't need yours. Nice offer, though. Thank you."

The gnome returns from studying the gate with a few notes on a piece of paper, and addresses the group.

"The Gate actually isn't in that bad of condition. We should be able to remove the hinges, treat them with grease and a steel brush, and reset them properly on the gate. It would also be best to level out the earth at the base of the gates, a simple spade should do the trick. I'd say that if we work together we can get it done in a few hours and all be able to sleep better tonight. Maybe even have time to bring some pork back for dinner!"

Pyotr nods then turns to Arnulf.

"Want to give us a hand with this, not sure I can pick them up on my own and, no offense to the Gnome, but I think while he's got us whipped in the know-how department, we have the edge in the can-do."

Pytor will follow Geliglee's directions and start to work on removing the hinges, hopefully with Arnulf's help.

Arnulf frowns. Right proper and nice swordlords? What was Oleg hinting at? But Pyotr pulls the man out of his ponderings. "What? Eh, of course I'll help. You should be aware though that the moment the bandits realize the gate has been repaired they'll come by in full force. Or well, that's what I expect them to do. Oleg, do you have enough faith in us? Because we" and he eyes his companions, knowing they too bear a charter with them," will protect you."

Ary's playful smirk returned, as she turned to Kira. "Hear that, Kira? They think just because I worship Iomedae, I'm gonna do the right thing." She shook her head and mock-rolled her eyes.
Kira tilted her head."You plan on doing the wrong thing?"
Ary shook her head. "Don't I always?" The grin widened. "Of course I'm going to do the right thing... or at least try. The question is... what is the right thing? What do you think?"
"My town has had to deal with bandits before and our attempt to reason failed quickly, they came for a fight as much as stealing."
"Mmmn..." Ary nodded, the grin thinning into pursed lips. "So you don't think it's worth talking?"
Kira shrugged. "That was just one case, these people may be different. Only one real way to be sure."
"Try it, and find out? Think they'd talk to one of us alone? Or do you think that'd be suicidal to try?"
"If the others agree it's possible but alone would most likely be suicide, yes."
"But compare and contrast to us all walking up to them armed. Maybe we could set up in the woods, and if they try anything, ambush? Go in in good faith, but have a backup plan?" Ary tapped her lip and nose with a finger from her sword arm.
"Why go to them? if they are attacking this outpost just wait and let them come to us. That will make it easier to set up an ambush anyway."
"Well... that was somewhat the plan. We know they're going to be coming here, right? But if they come, and there're two wild animals, two lawfully inclined worshipers, and a tiny gnome all waiting for them..." she threw up her hand. "I don't think that's really what we want to happen."
"If you plan to ambush like you said ideally they wouldn't see the others."
"Mmmhmm. That's the point. So we get them to come to us here, one of us... I'm thinking me... approaches them and explains that they don't have anything left to give, and that I'd like to speak to their leader to see if they would be willing to stand down... since technically we have the charters, we could make them citizens and grant clemency. It's a better deal than having to kill them, right?"
"No reason to approach them, I'd think that would just make you an easy target and I'm not entirely sure what powers the sword lords granted us but it may be possible."
"Then what do you suggest?" Ary responded.
"We speak to them first, like you suggest, but from a nice safe distance with a wall and prefearble whatever other defences we can fix in time."
Ary sighed and nodded. "Okay then. I guess I'll get to work helping them with the gate." She stood and moved towards it, stripping the shield off her arm as she went, and rolling her shoulders. "Spare some space for me, boys."

Male Human Hunter 1 |

Boy?! Arnulf involuntarily frowned at Ary and stepped aside, giving her ample space to do her thing. "Okay, girl. Show us what you got."

Really, boy?! She wasn't his mother nor did she sport the crow's feet of a babushka. Was he not manly enough for her?!

Gelliglee joins in to direct the efforts with his engineering skills, using prestidigitation to clean and assist whenever possible.

Excellent! Yes, right there... no like that.. perfect. Here ya go. Well done!

As the task winds down he adds to the group, while cleaning the last of the grease off his hands, "Tracking wild beasts, whether of the boar or man variety is not my specialty, but it might be good to gather what information we can by scouting out our quarry rather than just waiting for them to come to us."

Male Human Paladin 1 HP 11/11 AC 15 T 10 FF 15 F +3 R +0 W +2 INIT +3 PERC +5

As Pyotr, Arnulf and Ary shimmy the last hinge into place, the young Paladin steps back and wipes his brow.

"Now," He grunts. "About that stew."

Kira wouldn't offer to help with the door, Physical labor wasn't her strong suit but she did offer what she could.
"If parts are broken I might be able to fix them but other than that I don't know how much help I can be with defenses."

Oleg fetches some tools and helps with removing the hinges with careful application of a crowbar and giving Arnulf the choice between a hammer, mallet, or an impressively sized sledgehammer. Svetlana slips into the house, reemerging with a large earthenware pot full of collected grease drippings from her cooking and a small piece of iron wool, saying, "I hope this will do the job, it's all I've got, and usually I just use it for cleaning out the Varisian oven."

With so many hands working together at the task, the massive gates are easily removed from their hinges, which are then cleaned and slowly restored to working condition. Unfortunately, reinstalling the gates takes quite a significant feat of strength, and everyone who helped is exhausted afterward. But with the newly cleaned and greased hinges and with all the weeds cleared away to make for level ground, the gates easily swing back and forth, and Oleg even fetches the massive iron-reinforced beam used to 'lock' the gate into the closed position from where it had been stored inside the stable.

Wiping the sweat from his brow, he remarks, "It seems I owe you all a debt of gratitude already, and you've not even dealt with the bandits yet! You are good people, and I am sure the Greenbelt will be much enriched by your presence. I know you're eager to get the lay of the land, but the Greenbelt is not a safe place to be wandering about at night, even for well-armed adventurers. One misplaced foot and you're tumbling down into the burrow of a giant trapdoor spider to become an evening meal. And, on that subject, come! Let's all go see how Svetlana's stew is coming along!"

The stew proves to be a hearty mix of vegetables and chunks of venison, a rich meal suitable to any merchant in Restov, though perhaps not what nobles might be accustomed to. She comments that she used up the last of her stock of moon radishes, which doesn't especially please Oleg, perhaps because they prove far more flavorful than ordinary radishes, with a strong peppery taste.

Male Human Hunter 1 |

Arnulf purrs his heart out as he samples the stew. "This is delicious!" Oh, it reminded him of the meals his mother used to cook. He remembered how he used to ask her what her secret was. The answer? Love. And it was obvious that Svetlana poured a whole lot of love into her food.

All in all, today was a good day.

Ary thinks for a moment about the radishes and the spider as she puts her shield back on her arm, and tries to work the kinks out of her shoulders. Covered in sweat from the massive undertaking, she was really thinking about getting that bath before dinner... but then the smell hit her and she nodded, following along inside.

"Giant trap door spiders? Spider webs are bad enough, but they dig holes too?" Ary shook her head. Ugh.

She eats quickly, like a person used to taking mess, and doesn't particularly comment on the quality of food. Though when her bowl runs dry, she uses her finger to finish cleaning it out, sucking the remainder of the juices off her finger. "Are moon radishes native to this area, or would they have to be traded for?"

Oleg responds to Ary's question by saying, "I've not actually heard any reports of giant spiders within the Narlmarches, but out in the plains and hills... well... this isn't Brevoy. North of here, any such creatures have long since been hunted to extinction and rightly so, but in the wilds of the Greenbelt, giant trapdoor spiders are just one of a dozen deaths you might find."

Svetlana smiles cheerfully and thanks Arnulf for his compliment of her cooking, but shares a mournful glance with her husband when Ary asks about the moon radishes, explaining, "They are native to the area, yes, but I have no idea where Niko found them. He used to bring us a sackful whenever he would pass through to resupply, and they are one of Oleg's favorite foods. Unfortunately, the last time we saw Niko was nearly three months ago, a week after the first time the bandits came calling."

Ary Bishop:
Moon radishes are too rare a plant for you to have heard of before, but giant trapdoor spiders are a massive species which grow large enough to prey on deer, elk, and even humans. They tend to burrow into the ground and then cover their burrows with a mix of silk, soil, and grass, which acts as a very effective camouflage. You also recall that they're known to be poisonous and that their silk is prized by some tailors for being especially soft and resilient.

Ary didn't particularly like spiders, and would keep that information in mind when wandering around in these woods. She nodded slowly to Svetlana, "Do you know what areas he hunted in?" She looked to the rest of the people there, "Maybe after the bandits we can go check on him?"

Since nothing seemed to be broken and only needing of a cleaning Kira planned on simply staying out of the way since she wouldn't be much help.

She took a seat with the others to eat the rich stew and listen to them talk.

Pyotr ate his stew greedily. Finishing quickly then settling in for conversation with the rest of the company.

"I'm loathe to leave Oleg's unguarded against the bandits even with the gates repaired. Gates are only useful in a siege if there is someone to man the walls against climbers. If we start scouting and the Bandits arrive, all the gates are going to do for he and Svetlana is trap them inside the fort with the bandits when they climb over the walls."

He turns to Oleg.

"You said the bandits haven't returned in a while. Do you think they watch your outpost waiting until you've had a shipment arrive before striking? If so, perhaps we can entice them to arrive, by bluffing the party leaving on a wagon, before we loop back."

Ary had already stated her preference for talking it out, and having a backup plan... she didn't relish the idea of taking the fight to their home. While it sounded like something The Lady would do... Ary didn't feel certain that the bandits were outright evil, and showing up at their home would almost certainly lead to a fight. As Ary didn't have any better ideas, she stayed quiet on the topic.

"Also, you said the leader has stopped coming here? Any idea why? Anything you can tell us about them? The rest of the bandits?"

Male Human Hunter 1 |

Arnulf seems resolute when he gives his take on the whole bandit thing. "We should ambush the first group to come by, kill all but one and make him talk. Then, if he spoke the truth, we shall send him to Restov for a proper trial, and if he lied, we'll hang him. We are supposed to make an iron fist against the scum, not offer them a rehabilitation home. Next we know all of the River Kingdoms will head north.."

If they throw themselves on our mercy, we give them a chance to prove themselves and repay Oleg through labor. If they are belligerent in their refusal of justice, we grant them the mercy of the block or the gallows."

He turns to Arnulf.

"I understand the temptation of taking a hard line, but the first encounter is not the time. We must demonstrate that we are willing to provide a fresh start to those who would leave this life of banditry and rejoin civilization. Then, if we face continued defiance, despite our offers of clemency, we demonstrate the iron fist of justice."

"Geliglee," Pyotr turns to the Gnome. "What school of magic did you specialize in? I'm guessing the Bandits will want to try and form ranks against us, as we appear to be more of a martial force. Anything that might break them up so they're unable to focus their attention on a single threat? For that matter, how many of you can use magic?"

"Yes, Gelliglee Geerwander for those who don't recall. My best spells are those that mask or alter one's perception of of reality. Figments, glamours, phantasms..." Gelliglee then looks around noting some blank expressions and cuts off, adding, "I do have spells that may allow us to capture the bandits without violence by dazzling them into a stupor, or trick them into seeing what is not there..." The gnome smiles warmly, glad to be consulted.

"A pit trap," Paza says, then points at Geliglee. "Make it look like even ground. And I do magic. A bit."

"Yes, disguising a trap would be something I could help with... perhaps create sounds to lure someone towards it. Creating such a pit would take significant work ant time, however. We would need a good plan to bring something like that to fruition.

"We should play it safe and keep it simple. What are the odds they'll expecting for a trained magician to be amongst our ranks? Shock and awe, then immediately demand surrender."

The Levetons admit they have no idea where Niko may have regularly hunted, and they suspect that he was worried someone might find the moon radishes he'd been harvesting on their behalf. It did give him quite an advantage in trading with them, after all. When Paza inquires about a bath, Svetlana rises and says, "I'll go heat up some water so you can have a nice bath." She then vanishes inside the house, leaving her husband to listen as the topic of discussion turns to the bandits again.

"There's really not anywhere around here for any number of people to hide. Besides, they have horses now, or did the last two times they stopped through. The first time, only their leader had a horse, some harpy of a woman with a pair of hatchets I've not seen seen." Glancing towards the house, he lowers his voice, "She nearly took my leg off with one of those damned hatchets, and stole Svetlana's wedding ring right off her finger. If you can find that ring and return it, it's worth far more to me to see it placed back where it belongs than it can possibly be worth to anyone else, and, well, I haven't much these days, but I'd see to rewarding you all the same."

As the topic turns to what to actually do with the bandits once they're defeated, Oleg grows quiet and glances several times at the pile of nooses he's collected. He offers to lend what few shovels and other tools he has to the task of trapping the trading post, but points out that any pit trap might only catch a horse and allow the rider to escape without a mortal injury.

Kira, with her spear in hand, stands at attention."I'm not especially good with words or weapon but I do have a small amount of magic to offer and I'm willing to try whatever we need, Just tell me where I am needed."

"Entanglement," Paza offers. "Lure them somewhere the horse can't move, then they jump into my trap."

Ary seems thoughtful for a moment, "What sort of magic can you use, Kira?" She looks to Paza, and snaps her finger, "I'm not entirely sure what you mean by that, but we can combine some of these ideas! Geliglee, would you be able to use your magic to make a wagon..? Or to make a wagon, if we have one, look like it was covered in valuables? That'd let us know exactly what the bandits tended to do with merchants that were coming this way. We don't know how they'll come to the fort, and certainly we can't be sure whether it would be with their main force or not, but we could easily capture a few bandits by making it look like a merchant cart broke down in the road. And then when they move to unload the wagon," she turned her attention back to Paza, "you drop your net on them!"

"If they're mounted, we don't want to face them in the open plains, it would be suicide," Pyotr responds. "Especially without mounts of our own to match their mobility. I know Ary is mounted and can ride, but I'm not comfortable sending her out alone to scout ahead, despite her apparent combat capability. i would like to give the bandits a few days, to see if they come to Oleg's and allow us to meet them here on our terms, in a confined area where their mounts will be a hinderance to them and not an aid. If we could lure them into the Outpost with what appears to be soft, new targets ..."

Pyotr's gaze turns to Geliglee and Paza.

"A traveling gnomish merchant and his young ward. At first glance they seem easy pickings, especially if Paza's wolf will stay in the stables until she calls. Arnulf's bear will also have to hide, hopefully downwind from the horses, otherwise our menagerie of wildlife may give us away to the horses."

He starts to arrange the bowls in a model of Oleg's Outpost. He points to buildings that would give a line of sight coverage from the entrance.

"Ary and I could hide here, ready to cut off the gate should the bandits get skittish," Pyotr then moves a set of spoons into the center of his little map. "This would be the ideal moment to strike. Before they dismount and can scatter. Geliglee, I remember watching this Wizard train in the courtyard he could make 4 men fall asleep where they stand just by whispering a few strange words to the wind and tossing a few rose petals into the air. Other times he shot dazzling rainbows from his fingertips that seemed to mesmerize all caught in the arc. Is that beyond your capabilities, for if you could do such amazing things, we could hit them while they were all in a bunch, capture the whole lot of them without a fight and then be diplomatic, but from a position of supreme strength."

"The only problem I see with that... is that it's impossible to find out if they truly repent from that position. Only a fool, or a truly righteous person, tied up, and staring at the gallows, would state that he felt no sorrow for what he had done. If we open with the spell before they have a chance to show their true colors, then we'll only see the colors of captured thieves who feel they've been cheated."

"Seeds," Paza says, frowning at Pyotr's battle-map. "Sow them in the open space, here" -- she gestures at the courtyard -- "and when I cast the spell, make them to rise up all here."

The feral girl indicates an area with a 40 ft. spread...!

"Inner circle, normal seeds," Paza says. "Grasses. Things. To trap the horses. Outer circle, thorns. Thistles. Blackbriars. Nettles. For when the bandits jump off the horses. Hurt them. Bleed them. While they're trapped, cast your sleep-spell. Shoot arrows. Throw rocks. Death from a distance. Smart way to hunt."

Paza looks at Svetlana. "More food?" she asks.

Arnulf listens and uses the opportunity to get some insight into his new companions.

"I know a bit of healing and mending magic, if we do want to talk to the bandits first maybe illusion magic is our best bet?"
