Ravboom looks at Zirul, and then nods. "Ok, that one was on train. But not the half-elf. Sneaky drow types shouldn't pretend to be half-elves, it confuses the goblins." Ravboom then shrugs and looks back at the guard who spoke earlier about the Bounty Board, or whatever he called it. "Ok then, you be Ravboom witness, Ravboom put in claim on bounties on attackers and those raiding train, and salvage on chest." Ravboom then steps off the bodies, no longer caring about them. He starts pushing the chest off the train. "Jack, you help bring chest down, we see if illegal. If not illegal, we have half claim on."

People start back in surprise. Some scream. Others reach for weapons or clutch their travel-bags protectively, as though you might try to spirit them away with witchery. The station-guards, who had lowered their weapons to examine the body, have them raised again - and they're all pointing in your direction, Zirul.

You hear whispers from the now-tense crowd. 'Changeling,' some say, and 'Sorcerer' and 'demon'. One thing's for sure - you haven't broken any laws, but you just shocked a lot of excited and nervous people by letting your appearance change out in the open.

Now, I don't know how you want to handle this - to the people from the train you're a hero who helped save them, and they would probably support you in most things you say. I'm assuming your sort-of-companions would support you too, now they're sure of who you are. You could even just go with scolding the crowd for being so small minded or 'speciesist'. It's entirely up to you... but whatever you choose to do now, word will spread.

Ravboom looks at the crowd and puts his fists on his hips. "OH SHUT UP! Stupid! You want be afraid of something, be afraid of people blowing up your trains and killing people. Not of silly drow man who pretend to be elf. Or be afraid of Goblin, Goblin dangerous. Silly drow man not have muscles." The goblin looks at the crowd in disgust.

Geralt had had a lot of odd dreams lately. Vivid ones. Dreams that stayed with him, never fading. In them, he'd seen horrors and visions of beauty alike - so all in all, when the maybe-half-elf faded back into the maybe-not-half-elf he'd seen on the train, Geralt didn't even blink.

Until he saw the reaction of the crowd, and realized that people don't do that sort of thing in the real world.

Right?

"Whoa! Easy there! This guy, he..." Geralt cuts off when Ravboom speaks, then suppresses a wince at the not-very-helpful interjection. "Well, I was gonna say he helped save a lot of people, but yeah. Hell, maybe he just has a condition. This cold air can't be good for a guy's color, right? I'm feeling pale just standing here, and I didn't lug a criminal down the tracks."

Diplomacy: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (6) + 7 = 13

Geralt tries to calm the crowd, especially anyone in the crowd carrying a crossbow.

Geralt glances sideways at Zirul. "Right, it's some kind of condition or something? Something harmless to other people?" he asks, his eyes pointedly indicating the weapons aimed in the man's direction.

Hint, hint.

Please don't tell everyone what I am in town. I'm attracted to half-elf women, I don't want them to find out. I had to change back because it would wear off anyway. I'm working on making my disguise to last longer.

There is a ripple of uncertainty through the crowd as Rav chastises them, and some of the crossbows lower slightly. When Geralt weighs in as well the feeling on the station platform wavers... that would be a good explanation, some of the people suppose... until Zirul himself speaks.

Eyes go wide as they listen, people look at each other in confusion and disbelief... and then the guard closest to you begins to laugh. It's long, and loud, and incredibly genuine, and soon other people are laughing too, the jovial mood of the locomotive survivors infecting those assembled. Wiping tears from his eyes, the guard who laughed first speaks.

'You know, I don't consider myself a man of the world. Changing your face, magics and alchemy... all of that goes over my head. But I do understand one thing, let me tell you - I ain't never heard of a demon worried about getting to the ladies before.' He steps forward, offering a hand to shake and letting the crossbow drop back to his side. 'I don't know what you are, friend, but we here in Ingenspire respect the truth. And really,' he adds, his grin widening again, 'who hasn't had to change themselves a little to snag a fine-looking lady, hey?'

There is a chorus of mumbled agreement from the crowd (most notably the men rather than the women). A few parents are conscientiously covering the ears of their children, but any are smiling. The tension has not completely drained away, but the hostility has. They seem to be viewing you as curious, rather than dangerous, Zirul - and that's a good start.

Ravboom's nose wrinkles up. "Dusty dwellers... fetcherling... bah, pointy ear, dark skin, be drow to Ravboom." The goblin says with some harumphing more appropriate to a 300 year old dwarf chieftan than a 16 year old goblin, but then Ravboom looks like the type who reached maturity so fast it hit retroactively a century before he was born.

Joza is just as surprised as most of the other onlookers to see this strange half-elf shift form back into the pale gentleman she saw on the train, but having seen him in action in earlier, she's not inclined to be as distrustful as the crowd initially is. Thankfully (or not?) Ravboom and the tough-looking fighter fellow interject on his behalf before she can think of anything witty or useful to say. When the man himself offers up a little more information than she had expected (or really wanted) to learn, she laughs and shakes her head.

"Men..."

Zirul, there are both half- and full elves in the crowd, although none of those present have children with them.

The guard captain nods his head thoughtfully while the party speaks. When there's an appropriate break he asks you quietly 'So, I'm assuming you're new in town, then? First visit to the peaks?'

'Ahh... which one in particular? i may only be a station guard, but we have a few sketches of, umm... troublesome characters, I suppose, that we keep in the guard-house. Your man might be on one of them if you'd care to take a look?'

He gets back to the matter at hand.

'Anyway, reason I ask is that I doubt you gents - and lady - have anywhere to stay tonight. And seeing as you've saved us a lot of trouble, and maybe even a lot of bloodshed, if what your lad here said is to be believed, then I might be able to offer you somewhere to sleep for a few nights, free of charge. Jack goes up to Zirul and gives him a slap on the back. "Its rare to see someone so no shame in sharing his preference in women in public. I admire your guts, but using such a cheap trick, especially to my kin, doesn't set right with me." Jack then rests his arm on Zirul's shoulders and whispers in his ear. "Plus i know from experience most women like unique and interesting rather than same and bland. And don't forget a hint of danger and most women won't be able to resist you." He then removes his arm and joins the others. "A place to stay would be nice. You mind telling us a good place to go for a drink and a nice meal?" He then turns towards the others. "I think we should get to know each other better. And besides me and Rav here got some catching up to do." Jack places a hand on Ravbooms head.

Wanted to post earlier but it got eaten by bad internet connection.

'No, not for chickens - though I'm afraid you might feel a little... henpecked!!!' the man laughs loudly again at his own incredibly bad joke as the other guards (and even some of the assembled crowd) groan loudly, one of them whispering 'not this one again...'. He goes on to clarify that his wife owns a hotel in the city, and he knows that they have a few spare rooms. Letting you stay would be the least that they could do and, although they can't promise to provide food, they can certainly guarantee a warm bed.

Everybody, the jovial station guard is more than happy to lead you away from the crowd of onlookers and toward his family-owned lodgings, out of the station and into the streets.

For those of you new to the city, it doesn't make the best first impression - once away from the station platforms and out into the streets you see that although they are shovelled relatively free of snow, despite the blizzard-like conditions around you, the streets you walk through are still bitterly cold and almost everybody you see is wearing thick furs that hide their features.

It seems to be a rather inhospitable place, all told - austere buildings standing tall on both sides of the curving streets, and multiple sets of covered stairwells that lead up and down the harsh slope of the mountain peak that the city is built around. Looking outward and away from the mountain gives you a breathtaking view of the rickingbridge network, spanning out into the snowy air and connecting each of the various districts of Jevenwist... but looking in and upwards is perhaps more vertigo-inducing, the architecture reaching up and up in tight layers like a coiled spring. Especially for the plainsdwellers, it's a very strange feeling to be so high and yet surrounded by so much crowded development.

Perception DC 12:
Most of the crowd that watches you leave are on your side, being chastened by Rav and more open-minded about odd travellers than those in the outlying districts. Still, you do get a little more attention than you would feel entirely comfortable with...

Perception DC 18:
More than one person in the crowd around the station 'just happens' to follow you through the streets. Although the movement could be entirely innocent, it is rather telling that they break away from your trail as soon as they know which hotel the stationmaster is leading you to. You doubt there's anything malicious in their curiosity... but people do love to gossip.

Knowledge Nature DC 12:
You're operating at a punishing altitude - walking around isn't much of a problem, even in the places where the snow is thicker, but if you don't respect those stairways and pace yourself moving from level to level exhaustion will creep up on you at a moment's notice, at least until you get accustomed to doing anything more than sitting around on a train at this height.

Knowledge Arcana DC 15:
You're aware that Jevenwist's central district is a place renowned for its research facilities and obsession with the chemical arts, but you don't see any signs of it here - you're guessing that such places are higher up. In richer districts nearer the peak of the mountain, maybe?

The station guard, who identifies himself on the way as a Mister Harold, stops you in front of a narrow but tall building, with a sign out the front which reads Dancer's House. This is the place you have free rooms at, although Harold points you a little further along the way telling you to look out for one of the local public houses if you fancy a meal and maybe a spot of ale.

So, what do you do?

Before Mister Harold leaves them in front of the Dancer's House, Geralt takes him by the arm and lowers his voice.

Finally though, after being in front of The Dancer, Ravboom waits for Geralt to thank Harold and ask him questions. Then Ravboom pulls out a rolled up piece of paper. Unrolling it, it reveals the face of a tiefling, and a short description of the tiefling's appearance and manners, mostly unsavory. "Have seen this man around? Is wanted for perversions against nature, lewd and lacivious acts, public intoxication, and contract violations. Ravboom hunting him."

He does NOT let Jack see the drawing. If Harold has, Ravboom will stop him from saying any names out loud, claiming he doesn't trust Jack not to steal his bounty.

Varitus loves the attention. Attention brings coin.

Varitus, you notice that your fan from the train tails you for a little while, too embarrassed to come forward and content to bask in the glorious light (darkness?) of your presence.

As an aside to Geralt, Harold whispers 'Turnabout Lane, the house with the red door. She's a local healer, and a little more discreet than most of the guild doctors around here.'

Rav, the friendly man scrutinizes the picture you show him and tells you that no, he doesn't recognize that face. He also assures you that when he clocks off work at the end of the day he'll bring you a copy of the JTA banned passenger list - names, listed offences and faces. If you find any of the people on there and bring them in to the transit authority you might be able to make a tidy bit of coin, even if it's not official bounty-work.

And Zirul, your hanging back lets you appreciate the pace and style of the city a little more, and notice something potentially useful about the passers-by. Not only do the residents seem to be far less affected by the cold than the rest of your group, but they are far more sure-footed when they walk, even across the ice. After a while you realise that the majority of people are wearing some sort of spiked contraption on their boots - it might be an idea to find some of them for yourself at some point. Other than that you merely take in the view and familiarise yourself with the surroundings - to the extent that you would definitely be able to find your way back to the station in a hurry if needs be.

He attempts to join in on the conversations about both the train attack and other topics, but simply cannot focus through the pain.

"That's it. No way I'm waiting till morning. Booze ain't doing anything for the pain, it probably won't manage to knock me out," Geralt decides. After the meal is done, he tries to slip away from the group unnoticed.

Drawing his threadbare overcoat close around him, he makes his way through the streets, asking passers-by and paying attention for any street markings in order to find his way to "Turnabout Lane."

If Geralt finds the red door in Turnabout Lane, he'll knock and announce himself right away, asking for help.

Along the way to the inn...Varitus turns...looking directly at his follower...and, with an exaggerated motion, beckons with a single finger...I bet you know where the good drinking houses are...the ones crawling with fine female flesh...and blood. Tonight...you take me to one...buy my first drink...and I'll do the rest...

Zirul will point out to everyone, about the special boots.

Joza is too preoccupied by the sights to pay much attention to anything else going on at the moment. However, the coldness of the very air that she breathes gives her pause.

"Whew! I don't know about the rest of you, but this high altitude is hard to get used to. I feel fine just walking around, but the air is thin compared to what it is at lower elevations...best to be careful and not try to overexert ourselves until we've had a chance to get used to it up here."

When Zirul shares his observations about the spiked boots, she laughs and shakes her head. "I can't believe I didn't notice that myself! It probably would've taken one of us falling and making a fool of ourselves before any of the locals would have thought to suggest buying a pair. I'll certainly have to see about getting a pair for myself tomorrow."

Mental note: tomorrow, see about buying a pair of those spiked shoes, along with getting my bearings in this part of the city and seeing what sort of places might be hiring workers.

Thanks for the heads up.

Sorry for the delay... Been a very odd few days...

Directed by the jovial station guard you find yourself at a comfortable inn, heated by several large fireplaces to take a little of the sting out of the cold air and chock-full of laborers and ricking-men fresh from their work shifts.

Although the investigation into the incidents on the train is barely begun, word of your involvement has spread - you find yourselves in the middle of a morass of gossip, congratulations and free drinks, and want for very little throughout the evening. Zirul in particular gets quite a lot of attention, word of his dual appearance and apparent harmlessness having spread despite his wishes - and many ask after the corpse he dragged with him onto the station platform, guessing wildly as to what it might be without coming up with any answers.

Mal too draws a decent amount of attention, bolstered by the adoration of his follower, and finds himself surrounded in equal parts by curious locals and musical enthusiasts. Some of them clamor for a performance, despite the protests of the inn's owner (something of a musical traditionalist).

And Geralt, you excuse yourself from these festivities after a time to attend to your own problems. The red door opens up before you to reveal an incense-choked waiting room strewn with cushions and faded broadsheets- you are told to make yourself comfortable by a young man in the traditional red robes of a chirurgeon, and asked about the nature of your complaint.

I will most certainly perform...if only led to a place where the patrons will...appreciate...

...and I can appreciate the patronage. A...mutual feeding...so to speak.

Varitus slowly licks his lips, looking at those that appear interested...

"Sorry 'bout the hour," Geralt says. His voice is thin with the pain and every few words he half-pauses to wince at another flash of it through his skull. "I'm having these... headaches. Bad. Real bad. They start up outta nowhere, I feel hot and cold at the same time, hurts like crazy. Ah... dreams, too. Vivid ones, and I don't forget 'em. Sometimes good, sometimes bad, sometimes just freakin' weird. Um, guess you probably can't do anything about those, but I'm hoping you've got something for the pain. Can't even drink it away anymore."

Though unaccustomed to all of the attention, Joza enjoys herself and even tosses back a drink or two, but not enough to become inebriated.

During the course of the evening, she attempts to make some inquiries about the city - points of interest and any local news or gossip that doesn't pertain to themselves.
