GM Kyle |
Up the coast from the sea side small village of Cayden's Landing is a small cave. The rangers and huntsmen have identified the cave as goblin territory, a den of filth which is easily found with a half day's march. You and your companions took on a bounty from a local farmer whom had his fall harvest ruined from a recent rampage of goblins through his fields. In the assault, a good league of crops were razed and he lost one cow, two sheep, seven chickens, and the family dog. The farmer's own house was nearly burnt to the ground in the incident. A bounty worth your time was offered and beside your own reasons, it was worth the trouble. That morning you left Cayden's Landing in a trek up the coast, cutting your way through the rolling hills and coniferous forests until you found your destination. Nestled into bottom of a hillock was the mouth of a cave and on either side of the cave were fire hardened spears with skulls, feathers and leather of an unknown origin adorning them. The wind off of the sea rolled in and rattled the skulls.
From what the farmer had told your small band was that a good dozen goblins were involved in the attack on his farm. From what the local hunters mentioned, there were at least thrice as many who dwelled across the forested coutnryside. The cave could have perhaps just a dozen or more dwelling inside, it was hard to say. Many of the creatures were tribal in nature and by the red paint on the skulls, you were sure that this game belonged to one of two or three known tribes of goblins. There is a clear maniacal chatter found within the carvern, echoing out to greet you. Armed with your steel, wits and spellcraft, are you ready?
Felix Romilly |
Giving the bard an odd look with a raised brow, Felix gives a slight shake of his head. "I can't say that I ever took a turn down a wrong alley back home and ran across a head on a pike..."
He takes the time to strap his staff across his back, preparing his shield in one hand, his morningstar in the other. Checking over his daggers to make sure that they are in easy reach in case he needs something for range. The last comment by Hayman brings a slight smile to his face and he nods towards the others. "Especially goblins."
"Perhaps those of us who are more heavily geared should remain back where we can charge in and let the quiet ones sneak up and see if they can get a peak in the entrance?"
Goblins would be Knowledge: Nature, DM? If those are what we are expecting to run into I'd just spit out whatever facts I could about them, especially things like whether they are known to be trap makers, sneaky, group fighters, ect.
So we don't have to make an extra post, I don't mind if you ever roll those knowledge checks for me. Unless we are sneaking my char will always be passing along whatever he knows.
jeod |
Looking alarmed I like the sneak in plan for information so we DONT fall into a trap, as we are invading THEIR home turf, we could use our brains and not our fists, Its a cave right? Looks at felix Could we start a fire useing wood that smokes alot then fan in the smoke or block the entrance except for a small hole then simply slaughter them as they come out one by one? Looking hopeful for staying out of harms way, Or at least let me go in and get some information before we go in all half-cocked
Felix Romilly |
Won't summon monster only last for 1 round right now?
Felix glances to the others, considering. "Rushing in definitely seems like it will put us in more danger than needed, and since it is my job to keep you all alive I'd prefer not to be handed extra work."
He flashes a smile at that, thinking. "Smoking them out may work, but the little buggers are rather fond of fire and low enough to the ground they may not choke too badly in a large cave. Plus until we know how many are in there, I don't know if we want to try and tackle them all at once. Taking them out in small groups may be a better plan, keeping them from swarming over us while our far more skilled combatants can cut them down."
"If we are going to scout however, I wouldn't move out of sight in case you get spotted. We can take it one room at a time, check the entrance from where we can see you and find out what you can gather. If its just one large chamber we might not have a choice but to hit them all. If it looks like it goes further, we could probably make some noise outside or the like and lure those in the first room to come to us when they check it out."
jeod |
Hmm good points felix, I will scout ahead and we can go in room by room, hopefully they have some light in there at least for me to see by. I really just wish there was a way I could communicate with the rest of you while im in the room and not have to risk leaving then coming back in with every one in tow, still it sounds like a solid plan to me. If there are no objections I will see if there is anything of intrest at this entrance Stares intently at the cave entrance seeing if there has been something over looked, moving cautiously to the side examining it. .

Hayman, The Military Bard |
"A luring out seems like fun, and a little safer if you ask me.
Hayman pats Unruly on the back to calm him saying, "Fighing in the light of day strikes my fancy. I am pretty good at mimiking noises, if someone could tell me what the hell goblins like or dislike, I could possibly bring them out by creating those sounds"
After saying that, he realizes how stupid it sounds, then gives an appologetic wry smile to the group.
Unruly Xiong |
"Yeah, you can always bring a light with you so that you can see," Xiong replies derisively. "And you can put a bucket over your head so that they can't see you, either. Seriously, if you run into trouble, just scream like a little girl, and I'll come in, smashing. Simple, huh? Off you go."
Xiong kicks at a pebble, visibly fighting off boredom.
Thorfinn Feigrsson |
After spending some time studying the cave entrance, the taciturn dwarf grunts. "Me, I fight better in tight quarters. How about we get out of line of sight of the entrance, move close, and just listen for 'em? They don't keep real quiet when they're at home."
GM Kyle |
When jeod looks inside the mouth of the cave he can tell the cave descends into the earth at a low slope and turns. There is chatter that comes down from inside of the cave and the scent of smoke. Creeping further in a good distance you can see where the tunnel opens into a large room. Inside the cavern room is a small burning fire pit with hot coals and something roasting on a spit. Small short creatures with bright burning eyes and mouths lined with jagged teeth are seen within. There appear to be roughly six from your vantage point, speaking in their vile dialect.
jeod |
My eyes grow wide as I stealthfully make my way back to the group whisperings There are at least 6 of them a good distance in. They have a fire inside with a decent amount of smoke with somthing roasting on a spit above it. It would seem they are having some sort of celebration. If we are going in then this is the time, as they are distracted. With thier meal. Gets behind thorfinn and unruly Well you get your wish lets go, lets at least try to keep th element of surprise for a little while Draws my twin kukris, and moves with the rest of the party

Rolling for Jeod's Second Attack: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (2) + 2 = 4
The rogue sneaks through the cavern ahead of his louder companions, keeping close to the wall. He slinks through the shadows and finds a goblin separated from the group. His hands deftly move the short blades he carries, slitting the goblin's throat. The creature doesn't even shriek, falling to the ground in a gurgle of blood. Dead. A few goblins notice their kin hit the floor and shriek in their alien tongue, leaping up and spitting what you assume to be vile curses. Others, however, turned their wide heads and big large eyes to Jeod and scramble to their feet. Four immediately jump to their feet as they see the rest of the party moving into the cavern. One charges the rogue brandishing a rusty short sword from his dog skin belt.

Hayman, The Military Bard |
Acknowledging the ease with which the rogue took the goblin out, hayman smiles to himself, then tells the squad (invoking his imspire courage ability), "Whoever can impress me more than Jeod already has gets his next round of drinks on me."
Hayman secretly hopes that Unruley goes into -slay them all mode-
everyone gets +1 to hit and +1 damage with weapons

The goblins rise up and quickly move to engage the intruders, crying out in their shrieking tongue and slashing madly at the four smaller party members. Their rusted swords find air, chain and leather and reflexes doing you all well. They curse vile words as they dance around you wielding those dangerous blades.

Is it possible to move with a 5ft step to flank the goblin attacking Hayman? If not how many AoO would be involved?
You vile pathetic creatures and to think that most people are actually afraid of you. Hayman I will be claiming that wound of drinks my good friend and I am looking forward to it. Come here you filthy creature attack my comrad will you attempts to slip my blade between the goblins ribs.

Thorfinn grins widely and shouts a Dwarven war cry as he advances on the nearest goblin, his hatred for the foul creatures giving added strength to his blow. "Умри, маленький зверь!" The axe goes wide, though, as the little wretch ducks under the swing.
Felix Romilly |
Just a note, you said they were shrieking in an alien tongue, but if they are speaking Goblin I do understand it.
Also, I think Uzian should be above me in initiative, we both got a 5 but he's a bit faster than I am. Doesn't particularly matter though with allies.

Felix wrinkles his nose as the goblins come rushing forward, easing batting away its swipe with his shield. "That rush of excitement of discovery always seems to be paired with a foul smell doesn't it, gods to they stink..."
Swiping out with his morningstar, Felix calls out in the goblin's native tongue. "Your raiding is at an end, foul creatures!"

He then tries to maneuver around to get one of the creatures backs lined up with the rogue's blades.
If I can five foot step and be in position where the rogue could flank for a full round I will. Otherwise I'll take a move to get to such a spot so he can easily flank, provoking if necessary.
GM Kyle |
The goblins are quicker than you can give them credit and they swiftly duck under your blows, attributed to their height notably. As Hayman mocks his companions into performing better, Jeod doesn't live up to his previous ability and both blades miss their mark. Thorfinn stumbles, his axe whistling over a goblin's head which only causes them to giggle. However, Xiong swings with his tetsubo and catches the goblin attacking Uzian off guard; the goblin shrieks in agony and flies across the room, slamming against he wall with a splatter of inky blood before hitting the ground. Felix steps up with his morningstar and nearly kills the goblin on the spot with a swing. Uzian readies his crossbow and a bolt zips across the room, hitting the ground at a goblin's foot as everyone becomes tangles in combat.

Hayman next. 4 Goblins remain.
Hayman, The Military Bard |
Hayman continues his banter, exorting Unruly to reduce another goblin into a bloody pulp. As he raises his bow to pop the goblin standing in front of him, Hayman says with a tad of sarcasm... "I'm guessing someone wants to get this thing off of me?"
Then he lefts the arrow fly point blank range...
