In short, this homebrew was intended for beginner GM's. The story contains a variety of elements in sequence that gradually go through different terrains, battle situations, and other challenges to allow a DM to become familiar with the rules.

Edelle slides down the slick side of the wall and leaps into the air, plunging her bardiche deep into the chest of the Drider. The Drider jolts up at the sudden pain, and then its body relaxes into the gently flowing water. The beast has died. Soon after, most of the survivors are through the water and making their way down the stairwell. Casvian is the last through. two swim checks please

Presuming that Mr Arcane Magic can make a random rock light up for me I'm going to investigate the pit the waterfall falls into.

What he can tell for certain is that Argent is indeed dead. Unraveler speaks "Damn fool! Look what you've gone and done to yourself! " It curses the skies in the harshest tongue you have ever heard. Edelle finds little of interest under the falls. She comes up with nothing to show but a few copper pieces dropped over time by those who may have fallen from the ledges.

male Halfling rogue 6

Sumatek will go and examine the driders corpse. appraise 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (17) + 5 = 22 He will takethe time to remove the hide the same as the last one.

When he is finished
Should we take Argents body to the surface or bury him here? Its too bad he was almost out of here. Does anyone know if he worshipped any gods?

Sumatek will search the area as well and be ready to leave when the group heads down the tunnel.

Taking point when we move and searching for traps and enemies.

Female Human Monk 7

Lets not poison the local water supply, we don't know what nice people drink this water, we'll bury him in dry soil.

Sumatek, would you like to tie a rope around you before jumping into the next stretch of water? Or would you prefer someone who can swim to do it?

Male Half Elf Fighter 1/Sorceror 4/Dragon Disciple 2

Wait, are you Skinning that?!? Why? To what end?

Oh, and our rope is still securely fastened to a rock upstream.
Alric also places two of the newly found copper bits into the mouth of Argent's corpse, treading on Unraveler in the process.

male Halfling rogue 6

Sumatek looks up from the corpse at Alric.

Of course im skinning it. Gems are Gems after all. ha ha ha.

Sumatek resumes working and starts singing his "shiny rocks" song to himself.

Female Human Monk 7

After checking that our rope is securely attached at this end I use it to swim back up stream and untie that end, and use the rope to swim back to this end again.

Swim there 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (19) + 9 = 28
Swim back 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (5) + 9 = 14

Now lets not leave this lying around, it's useful m'kay

There is a mumur among the crowd as they comment about Argent. "Don't imagine a man like that would be friendly with any God. As to the disposal of the body, we can't carry the giant spider away too, so the water supply is going to be rotten in a while anyways. I say leave the man. Take his supplies and leave the body. " Evidently this man is still a bit harsh from his experiences, but he does present some valid points.

Sumatek gathers the gems, thinking that these are particularly valuable and would be worth nearly 10,000 GP if sold to the right buyer. Edelle makes her way part way up stream, but the push of the curent makes her movement slower. another two checks to complete the round trip

Edelle successfully returns with 90 feet left of useable rope. Some had to be cut during this escapade.

Female Human Monk 7

Tying the rope to something and me again, I tell the others what different rope signals will mean:
A long tug will start a message. One short tug means follow now, two short means I'm untying my self and continuing on, two short means I'm messaging under duress

Unless someone has something interesting to say I'll jump back into the stream and swim further down stream

Casvian is surprised by the strength of the current and looses his footing. He does not get a chance to get a good breath before going under, and the force of the current is too fast for him to get back to the high ceiling. He must take what little air he has and hope that he can make it to the other side. One more swim check for lack of progress, one constitution check to remain conscious

You said two short twice. Also, I think you should take a light spell.

Could this be the end of the valiant Casvian? Will he dig deep within himself to find the will to make it to the shore? Stay tuned as the dice roll.

Casvian surfaces on the other side of the water, gasping greatly as he makes his way up onto shore. There are some dwarves helping to ensure everyone gets up out of the water and down the stairs properly. As Casvian makes his way down, they wait for a few moments as Edelle retrieves the rope and Sumatek continues to pilfer the hide of the Drider. Edelle makes her way under the water once more and immediately comes back. It turns out that this low section of ceiling is only 5 or 6 feet. With the water so calm from here, all are able to make their way under. Sumatek takes point and she notes the tunnels begin to spread out wildly and fork off. It would be very hard to keep oriented in this labryinth if your group did not have a map. The halfling holding this smiles and points the right direction.

male Halfling rogue 6

Weapons at the ready Sumatek heads down the right hand tunnel. Keeping to the shadows he checks and rechecks for traps and any other drow enemies.

Sumatek finds nothing threatening their progress. The group travels for ages. Edelle is upset at how slow some people are progressing. She finds herself trying to keep entertained by running back and forth amongst the group, delivering water and helping the slowest folks. Alric busies himself with his own thoughts and Casvian tries to keep a calm and gruff exterior despite the fact that he is more than a little shaken up with his previous experience.

The halfling, Pan, with the map keeps on saying that it is just a little further and he encourages people to keep moving. After a time you begin to wonder just how much longer this will take.

Female Human Monk 7

"Umm... " Pan stalls and takes your arm, leading you away from the rest of the group. By the time you are sufficiently far away, Pan is visibly upset and frightened. He shows you the map, but all of the lines are blurred. "The water... I didn't know what to do. These people have so little to hold on to. I didn't want to start a panic. I thought I remembered it well enough. " Sumatek comes up to Edelle and Pan. "This way is a dead end, what's going on? " Pan looks frightenedly back at the rest of the group who are advancing. "What can we say? I can't let them know that we're... well... you know...."

You can sense a feeling of dis-ease among the ragged caravan. There is a hush over the crowd as you move through back in the direction you have been coming. No one says anything, they just keep moving. You reach your last fork in the road and opt to take that direction for a distance. Sumatek aids Casvian in deciphering the meaning of the tracks, and they finally agree upon a conclusion. These treads are too heavy for the nimble drow, and the gait is too wide.

Casvian speaks "Orcs, maybe a half dozen of them went across this path from the left to the right. Not long ago either. It looks like the left path where they came from goes upward, while the other goes further south. "

The group awaits for someone to decide what to do. I don't usually prompt knowledge checks, but K(local) or k(nature) would be very helpful in this particular situation.

You remember that Orcs in this region have settlements above ground near the Deep Forest. That still does not answer the question of why they would be down here though.

Edelle's senses are alight with a renewed energy and hope at the prospect of freedom. She can see and feel every pebble and every crack in the rock as each step leads closer to the surface. Sumatek grabs Edelle's arm and points out a trap laid by the orcs. He ensures that everyone avoids the beartrap as they come past. Finally, after what seems like and eternity, you come around a corner. There is a strange and foreign glow there. For some reason, you all feel the urge to hold each other as you go out into the sunlight of an early autumn afternoon. The sun is at your backs cresting over the mountain ranges that make up the western border of Terra Vicis. As you all set down for a moment, Alric notes a movement in his pack, and the sounds of something strange inside. Opening it, he sees the small cage that once belonged to Thundrik and the egg stored inside there. The moment the sunlight hits the egg, sparks of electric energy bound off of it, and Alric nearly drops the cage. After a moment, the shell bursts explosively all at once in a flash of light and energy. What remains in the cage afterward is a young shocker lizard looking up at you. Kronos the Ancient appears before you moments later. "Hope" He says, " will lead us from the darkness. "

Chapter Two: The Animal Within

" Hah! Most aversions of that nature caused by lack of exposure. I can assure you my child, I have a breadth of experience that permits me to travel most places unharmed. Besides this, " His ebony eyes glint and you can see the stars in them A little magic goes a long way. Speaking of which, I have a gift for your group. "

Kronos hands you a large scroll with magical writing upon it, and some magical components in jars and bottles.

"Since the work ahead of you will be extensive and difficult, I thought you would like a place to return to for rest in between combat. Lay these objects in a circle as I will show you, then choose your word of power. Speak your word of power at any time and you will be brought back to the circle. You may return as many times as you like, but you may only lay the circle once, so choose your safe haven wisely. The magic will work return you from most places, but I cannot assure you that it will always work where you are. "

Casvian recalls that the orc village near here, is in competition with the dark elves and that they regularly stage raids into the underdark to attack the drow city. This explains why the orcs were travelling in the caves.

Male Half Elf Fighter 1/Sorceror 4/Dragon Disciple 2

While I can, I must ask. I know that you charge us with combating the prophecy, and that there is another lieutenant of your Student that we must find. But what do you know about this person. Their appearence, or purpose, or something to start on?

Sumatek eyes the drow suspiciously.
I am still not sure I trust your intentions but i have to admit you have gained some trust in my eyes. Not that that matters to anyone but me. We still need to be on guard if an orc raiding party could be near.

looking at the bright sky and then at the drow
obviously what you say about these troubles are valid and if we are to help you this gift is greatly appreciated. thank you for the gesture. I for one am just happy to see the daylight again. I would say maybe we should set these stones up just outside of town to give us a quick escape if it comes down to it.

sumatek looks at the lizard and then at the drow and asks
So what gives with the lizard and egg and this dwarf named thundrick. I barely met him before he crushed himself to death to save us. Is this his new form maybe? Im at a loss here to understand how that occurs and a little woried it might happen to me somehow.

Male Dark Elf Wizard?

The rest of the group looks frightened at the drow, but they are slowed, as though like shadows of their real selves. At Sumatek's defense, they come back up to speed. Some draw weapons, some move scared away from the dark elf, but they do not act. At what Sumatek says, Kronos responds:
"You would be well within your rights to hate my people, but I thank you for your maturity. I choose most often to travel under another guise. As to the egg, it has been my experience that life is a funny and tenacious thing. Perhaps Thundrik lives on through this small creature, perhaps this is what you make of it and nothing more. "

Kronos tells you that the best bet for finding a Lieutenant of his son is to go where Kronos the Ancient cannot travel. He advises you that the nearest location is Startville to the south. At this some members of the group become disquited.

" What are you saying exactly? That there's some sort of military force moving into my home? I've only just regained freedom and my family is under attack? This is your fault! You and your people! "

A number of people come forth with their weapons and attempt to attack Kronos.

You form a protective ring around Kronos, and he listens to your words, but he steps out from your group.
" No it is well and good. They have every right to be mad, and to be mad at me. I am to blame for causing the state of the world. Let these people have their frustrations out on me if they so choose it. "
With that Kronos opens himself up to the crowd. There is a pause, as some people look across at each other for what to do. One woman after a moment, cries and screams as she stabs at him with a kitchen knife It sinks deep into Kronos' chest, and he begins to bleed. She stabs repeatedly at him and more and more blood gushes forth, but Kronos stands tall. With each passing blow, you can hear him speak to her over her screams
I'm so sorry. You have every right. I know there is no excuse."
" Shut up! You killed my brother! My family! Shut Up! "
She tires after a few moments, and collapses crying. Kronos, still bloodied, stoops to help her. She looks into his eyes, and something changes about her. She wipes her eyes and returns to the group, to be held by the other women their. Kronos seems to be mortally wounded, but he moves about normally. It is an unnerving sight. At this, no one else comes forward. They sheath their weapons.
This display brings forth many questions for you, not the least of which is just how Kronos survives after such a grievous wound.
