Raleigh Blanc |
"Awright, but those were already pissed off. Now we're pokin' tha 'ive." Raleigh moves to poke the hive himself.
Acrobatics: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (16) + 4 = 20
Morningstars can poke: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (1) + 5 = 6 Charge plus drawing the morningstar. Dropping the spear if necessary.
Dam: 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (6) + 1 = 7
Just not this one.
Nathalion Grimarc |
Nathalion conjures another of his acidic orbs, aimed at the nearest bug.
Acid splash: 1d20 + 4 - 4 ⇒ (17) + 4 - 4 = 17
damage: 1d3 ⇒ 3
Then the wizard starts around the pool, following behind Uuzkhangr and his pet.
Was going to use a run action to circle around the pool, but you can run only in a straight line. Which is silly.
Uuzkhangr Dagravax |
...(+4 is from having a running start)
FYI you don't get a bonus to acrobatics because of a running start. A running long jump uses the full value of your acrobatics roll as the distance jumped, while a standing jump uses half that value.
Uuzkhangr sees the others leap across the channel into melee. He looks at Zyxl, and points at the roaches.
"Zyxl! Attack!"
handle animal: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (10) + 7 = 17
He then hustles around the end of the pool.
I realized before that I was counting squares on the base map image rather than the Roll 20 grid, so I possibly should have moved further in the first round, but not by enough to let me engage in melee this round.
Zyxl, Mantis Companion |
Zyxl beats her wings with a thrumming hum and takes to the air. She flies across the water and snatches at the closest roach with her claw.
Using Lunge to hit the one closest to Raleigh (to his east).
claw +2 charge: 1d20 + 2 + 2 ⇒ (13) + 2 + 2 = 17
damage: 1d4 ⇒ 2
grab?: 1d20 + 2 + 2 ⇒ (11) + 2 + 2 = 15
CrusaderWolf |
Gazig reloads and fires off another bolt, nearly catching the eye of the nearest roach--but it flinches at the last second and the bolt rebounds, spinning away into the darkness along with a chunk of chitin. The shot is followed quickly by another glob of acid from Nathalion, whose strike sizzles and burns, pitting the bug's glossy shell and making it keen as in pain as well.
Trying to keep up the pressure Raleigh charges, but the mossy patches turn under his boot and the faux-guardsman stumbles at the last second. The roach has other things to worry about, however, as Zyxl comes winging over, claws extended and digging in through acid-weakened armor, dragging the unfortunate creature out over the water!
CrusaderWolf |
Suddenly finding themselves under attack, the cockroaches all flare up their antennae and emit an alarmingly loud hiss--a sound that sounds all the more threatening as they rush at Raleigh and Borumaru!
The hisses are a fear effect as a Free Action that can cause you to be shaken unless you succeed on a DC14 Will save. I need 3 saves from Borumaru & Raliegh, 1 from Nathalion & Gaziq, and none from Uuzkanger (plus I believe Zyxl is immune due to Mindless).

Hah! In your face, ye bunch of goblin-munching crusty vermin!
The cockroaches' shrieks only increase Borumaru's contempt for the lowly creatures.
"Disgusting..."
I spend my Move action to use Study Target on the cockroach.
katana: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (15) + 6 = 21 damage: 1d8 + 5 ⇒ (3) + 5 = 8
The attack targets the same creature as before, unless it's been already killed, of course. If that's the case, I just attack any other cockroach within reach.

Raleigh turns to watch as Zyxl drags the cockroach towards her--an error, as another of the bugs comes rushing out of the darkness towards him, its pincers jabbing through the half-elf's ringmail and tearing a deep furrow across his leg!
Borumaru pushes through the pain as one of the creatures sinks its pincers into his leg, reversing his katana and driving its blade through the offending roach. Amazingly, the creature doesn't collapse, though its hiss falters and fails as its green-red ichor spills upon the ground. Staggered at 0hp

AC is currently 14 due to charging.
Zyxl, Mantis Companion |
So I take it Zyxl successfully grappled then?
The roach snaps at Zyxl. She doesn't like that! She tries to pin the creature between her forelimbs.
Grapple +5 to maintain: 1d20 + 2 + 5 ⇒ (3) + 2 + 5 = 10 Probably Not
As the roach escapes, Zyxl moves a little back from the roach.
5' step west. I assume you can do that when flying.
Zyxl, Mantis Companion |
She did successfully grapple, and flying creatures can 5' step as long as they can hover (DC15 Fly check).
I assume she would also have to hover to remain grappled in midair too then?
Fly: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (7) + 2 = 9
The problem with companions with no skill ranks. :)
Since Zyxl can't hover this round, can I retcon that she lets the roach go and lands somewhere as a withdraw action?
Gaziq Neshar |
Will Save: 1d20 ⇒ 7
The strange, unsettling buzzing the of the roaches makes the slayer's skin crawl. Not to be left behind, he hustles along the path after the others.
Double moving around the path. I'll move my token when I can.

Nathalion Grimarc |
Will: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (8) + 3 = 11
The buzzing hiss sends a shiver down Nathalion's spine. The sound seems to penetrate his skull, dulling his senses.
Despite this, the speaks the draconic power words, along with the hand signs, to send another orb of acid toward a cockroach. The one fighting Zyxl.
Acid splash: 1d20 + 4 - 2 ⇒ (16) + 4 - 2 = 18

Zyxl, Mantis Companion |
That's fine, I'm still not used to the notion that flying creatures now have a bunch of checks to make.
No worries. The first feat Zyxl will get when her INT goes to 1 will be Skill Focus: Fly. That won't happen until level 4 though. Mind you, it applies to the roaches too. :)
Zyxl breaks off and flies around behind Uuzkhangr.
CrusaderWolf |
Zyxl drags her struggling prize closer, then promptly drops it as her flight starts to wobble. The hissing bug hits the filthy water with a splash as the mantis returns to her master. For his part, Uuzkhangr's scythe severs one of the his target's antennae and tears off a chunk of exoskeleton for good measure.
Nathalion lobs another acid-ball at the splashing roach and lands another hit, burning still more holes in its chitin as Gaziq moves around to the growing melee on the opposite side.
Raleigh's club misses its mark, and the angry roaches lash out to defend their meal.
Splashing and hissing, the one dropped by Zyxl scrabbles as the stonework of the sewer edge, finding purchase and hauling itself back up. Raleigh gets an AoO vs the blue-dot roach. Rounding on the investigator it snaps its pincers at him furiously, savaging the half-elf's forearm before he yanks it back.

I need a DC12 Fortitude save from Raleigh as well.
The roach wounded by Uuzkhangr attempts to bite back, as does Borumaru's new opponent--though the dwarf and tiefling evade the bites. The badly wounded roach turns to flee, that it might live to eat carrion another day. Borumaru gets an AoO vs green-dot roach.

Nathalion continues his traverse of the pool. Then he casts another of his tiny acidic orbs at the roach. A difficult shot with Uuzkhangr in the way and the bug involved with combat.
Acid splash: 1d20 + 4 - 2 - 4 ⇒ (4) + 4 - 2 - 4 = 2 Cockroach also gets +4 to AC for soft cover.
Nathalion has to pull his shot at last instant to avoid a friendly, the glistening orb goes high over the fray.
Gaziq Neshar |
Gaziq reloads and takes aim, but can't seem to find a good angle from his position. Better to get a closer vantage than risk friendly fire.
Moving and reloading. You forget how useful rapid reload is until there's no room for it in your build.

Uuzkhangr Dagravax |
Uuzkhangr steps to one side of the giant roach, and sweeps his scythe around at the roach.
5' step southeast and attack; now flanking with Raliegh.
scythe +2 flank: 1d20 + 3 + 2 ⇒ (19) + 3 + 2 = 24

Zyxl, Mantis Companion |
Zyxl moves behind Uuzkhangr and attacks her new target, reaching with her long and slender forelimbs.
The Roach with the green and red dot is in the perfect spot for Zyxl to attack after a 5' step. But I suspect that the skull and crossbones means that it was killed by Boromaru's AoO.
So: If the roach with the Red & Green dots is alive Zyxl will make two attacks with +2 for flanking. But, if the roach with the Red & Green dots is dead, use only the first attack and ignore the +2 flanking bonus. Also her icon needs to move one more square.
claw 1: 1d20 + 2 + 2 ⇒ (10) + 2 + 2 = 14

Raleigh and Borumaru take full advantage of the roaches' errors, club and sword landing solid blows. Boru's katana splits the roach's chitinous head and it collapses like a marionette with its strings cut. Both men follow up their strikes with a second, Boru slashes the face of his second opponent while Raleigh hammers at the bit of shell cracked by his first attack.
Raleigh the roach to your right is now Staggered at 0hp
Gaziq and Nathalion move closer, Nathalion's acid bolt going high while the ratfolk prepares to fire a more physical bolt.
Uuzkhangr steps up to support Raleigh, a vicious sweep of his scythe very nearly taking the leg off the roach before him, while Zyxl advances and takes a cautious swipe at the roach wounded by Borumaru.
Cornered and surrounded, the roaches continue trying to bite.

Roach AoO: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (13) + 3 = 16
The roach snaps at Dribbles but the larger vermin shrugs off the attack and bulls forward, drops of acid drooling onto the ground as its own mandibles tear into the smaller bug. Leaning over in his saddle the goblin smashes the coackroach over the head with his sword.

Raleigh brings down the pointy end of his morningstar as hard as he can on the remaining roach.
Attack: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (8) + 5 = 13
Damage: 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (7) + 1 = 8
Borumaru |
Borumaru flicks his blade with a quick slash to get rid of most of the blood in it, then produces a handkerchief and carefully wipes it clean.
"An acceptable warm up." he says, calmly. "Maybe the fallen can be given a more appropriate funeral now."
Uuzkhangr Dagravax |
"Cockroaches don't normally require funerals. They are close to nature, and... oh, you mean the goblins."
Nathalion Grimarc |
Nathalion sighs in relief as the bothersome chittering is cut off. "A dangerous lot of bugs. It's well we killed them before they found a way to the streets, or killed the maintenance people who have to work down here."
Raleigh Blanc |
"Oi, lets get a move on, which way from here, Fruggig?"
He winces at the pain in his arm, but the half-elf knows he's on a deadline. Also, knowing he cant put his spear away due to its sheer size, Raleigh pits his morningstar back in place.
Cant believe were following a goblins directions.
Gaziq Neshar |
Gaziq lowers his crossbow as he approaches the group. He kneels beside one of the goblin corpses and looks it over. Even though the roaches have been eating away at them, he hopes there's still some sign of what killed them. Perhaps that would give them a lead on the "dog monsters."
Survival: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (5) + 5 = 10
CrusaderWolf |
Survival can tell you about the scene and what happened, but Heal would be necessary to identify wounds, time of death, etc.
A cursory glance is enough to tell Gaziq that the battle fought here was a nasty one. The splashes of blood and chunks of moss torn free from the stone suggest that they group of goblins and goblin-dogs was running before turning to fight--and the shredded bodies make it all too clear that they didn't win.
Uuzkhangr Dagravax |
I have one cure light wounds prepared. But only the one. I can cast it if necessary.

Going by the Sorting Algorithm of Combat, I would guess that the rest of our fights today will only be harder, so I'd say its better to use the spell now than in combat. Up to you of course, but thats one less round of hitting people for you later.

For the record, not only do you have an unprepared slot that you could prepare your own CLW that would work on you (and no one else), you actually have two unprepared slots because it looks like you haven't leveled up your extracts yet. You should have 2 + 1 for your INT bonus. I have prepared all my spells and have only one CLW today. But assuming you aren't casting your own...
"Here, let me look at that," says Uuzkhangr. He examines the wound. "You're not griping about this little scratch, are you? Well... fine. Here." Uuzkhangr lays his hands on the wound and mutters some guttural words.
CLW: 1d8 + 2 ⇒ (8) + 2 = 10
For the record, Uuzkhangr is NOT here to be the party healer. As a druid he is about the worst character class to cast healing spells that actually can heal. And it looks like that is the only healing the party has right now. Boromaru doesn't know the spell. GM: I didn't really realize how little healing we have in this party. Any chance we can retcon pooling some cash together and buying a wand of CLW before we entered the sewers?
Gaziq Neshar |
@GM can I tell what direction the goblins were running before they got mowed down?

Nathalion watches with interest as Uuzkhangr performs his magic. [b]"A useful power, that."[/b ]
The wizard gives the area a cursory search, while Gaziq does his work.
Perception : 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (20) + 1 = 21
Then he moves on when the others do, keeping his place in line.
CrusaderWolf |
Gaziq: the goblins were running towards the direction you came from, from around the curving tunnel.
Boru: If no one has anything else to do we can continue, I just wanted to give everyone a chance.
Nathalion pokes around the messy remnants of the battle, picking over the corpses. The roaches, naturally, have nothing of value, but some items of value can be found on the goblins' corpses--57sp, 18gp, a (Small) masterwork crossbow with a jagged bayonet, (6) bolts plus a pair of acid-filled bolts.
Gaziq Neshar |
Gaziq accepts the crossbow and the bolts, nodding appreciatively as he looks them over. "A fair bit better than the one I've got. I'll make good use of these."
The ratfolk retakes his position as the group as they move deeper through the tunnels, towards the apparent source of these dogmonsters.
