Violent assault! Grabbing Quinn!: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (10) + 6 = 16
The first is vs her flat-footed CMD. The second against her grappled CMD.
And to the floor with her! Trip! (Her dex is -4 and thus CMD is -2): 1d20 - 1 ⇒ (14) - 1 = 13

The dwarf SHOUTS something in his native tongue, harsh and gutteral, and snatches out with a darting hand. He grabs Quinn's belt and yanks her back, mid-step, and hoists her rear against his hip in a sudden tossing maneuver that doesn't -quite- work thanks to her lankier stride. Instead he ends up with one hand up under her armpit, the other still holding her belt at the side, and his cleats CLANK as he tries valiantly to step on her feet, a terrifying tactic that threatens to lop off a toe if he doesn't wrestle her to the ground first... then who knows what those cleats might land on.

Duncan yelled trying to calm things down, [large]"STOP THIS! STOP THIS RIGHT NOW!"[/large]

He pushed Jibril off of Khaddar and the dwarf off of Quinn, "They are messing with your minds! Don't you get it? This is what the mind door is all about."

He hoped he had their attention, "This brain door isn't about puzzles; it's about them messing with our minds!"

He concluded, "Now how are we going to protect ourselves from that?"

Female Witchwolf Lunar oracle 4

The pretty boy had hit it in one - that had to be what this place was about. Not exercise of the mind, but domination of the mind. And Elia wasn't going to just let it happen. A half-growled incantation erupts from her chest, and a crackling barrier of energy envelops her, sparking where it contacts the ground. We protect ourselves by telling it no. It's not real - this is a game. A test. Now, pass it. The stern lecture isn't so unwavering as the witchwolf might hope, though...

Because I've for sure doomed myself to fail the next ten Will saves, haha. ;) I'll cast stunning barrier if I can to briefly disable anyone that may try to attack (and hope that if it's a friendly it shocks them back into their senses). If not, so be it.

She listens to Jibril's uncharacteristic rant and Khaddar's gibberish before exclaiming, "Has everyone gone mad?"

Duncan's voice cuts through the chaos and Quinn mutters, "I can't believe I'm about to say this but...Duncan is right."

I didn't know we were going round by round. I thought we were just 'playing it out. Below is my roll to push off Jibril I guess since he's the first to act. Are we also rolling initiatives?

CMB to push off Jibril: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (9) + 2 = 11

For a few seconds, there is absolute chaos in the caverns of hell. Jibril attempts to gut Khaddar, but the dwarf barely notices. Instead, the paranoid monk grabs Quinn, throws her down, and attempts to stomp her into submission. Duncan finally speaks some words of sense, and Elia protects herself with her witchery. One thing seems certain - somebody or somebodies are trying to mess with their minds.

Team Orra has no time to catch their breath before the madness continues...

Duncan's right - and he got it so fast. Turns out there is a good head under those curls. Those golden curls... A soft, moaning growl escapes Elia's throat, and she sidles closer to Duncan. I wonder if it's gold hair everywhere else, too? Soft on his chest, thick around...wait, what in the Hells?! Her growl turns to a sharp canine bark and human shout combined as her face contorts into an expression of confusion and distaste. He was right - this place is f!#@ing with our heads...

Quinn finds herself thrown to the ground. A wave of hopelessness and despair crashes onto the rogue pinning her to the ground, stripping her of any desire to continue. No one cared and there was no reason to keep going. How long would it take for her parents to realize she was never coming home - would they ever notice? Even her own teammates cared nothing for her, proven by this unprovoked attack. If the world didn't want her then she didn't want the world. Quinn curls up into the fetal position and just lays on the floor, unmoving.

Stomp away!

What was I going to do! He backs away from the group five feet and lets the hammer slip from his right hand. "They were right about me ... useless ... they were right, but I never thought I could-" He looks at the mend in his pants from the attack last night and something else shifts, he seems somehow diminished with the voice of a boy "I'm sorry, I'm sorry ... He's right - we have to stop! It's all a trick, just magic! Desperately, Elia reaches to Jibril, grabbing at his hands to try and stop him hurting himself further. With two loud yips, she gestures with her chin toward Quinn, and Ifanna bolts over to the woman and stands over her, growling menacingly at Khaddar as he attempts to attack.

Elia will make a grapple attempt against Jibril, while giving Ifanna a command to defend Quinn. The grapple attempt's untrained, so it'll provoke, but if her stunning barrier spell worked, it'll stun an attacker for one round.

My CMD is 18 and doesn't seem to be effected by being shaken. I don't attempt an opportunity attack unless Elia succeeds her grapple and then only to break free.

"Leave me, go win this game! Without me you will have a fighting chance! Go!"

Male Five Kings Dwarf Unchained Rogue (Makeshift Scrapper) 2, Unchained Monk (ManMaster) 2

Jibril didn't attack Khaddar, so he doesn't lash out at the man. Can't take attacks of opportunity while grappling, so no one moving towards, away, or around Khaddar gets attacked until his turn. Don't forget to roll Init for Ifanna! If she had succeeded on a trip, that'd have been a huge penalty. Khaddar got a 13 vs Quinn's CMD 15 to trip, so that failed, yes?

The wolf tears into Khaddar's calf and tries to worry him down to the floor, but Dwarves are stable, and Khaddar particularly so. The Dwarf twists Quinn around by the wrist and slips her hand into the loop made by the strap of his Dan Bong. A quick flick puts the baton portion in his hand, and he suddenly has a capture that prevents her from escaping! A vicious yank turns her around and has her own arm choking her, her back pushed against his and her feet barely touching the floor, a standing pin. He lashes out with an iron-clad boot at the wolf, who simply skips back, the frenzied martial artist all in a tizzy and not following to his own discipline in the panic this mind-trap induces.

Crying out in pain, he bellows "AUGH! Off me ye filthy beasty!

Quinn flops around like a ragdoll as Khaddar manhandles her. She does nothing to defend herself or try and stop him. After all, what was the point? Her insides churned with sorrow, heartache, and anguish. Maybe it would be best if it all ended so she wouldn't have to feel this way anymore.

Ifanna acts on Elia's initiative when everybody is in combat. It's easier for me to track that way. What happens to CMD if the "victim" isn't attempting to defend themselves? Do they only lose the Dex part? Is it an automatic success?

The mayhem in hell continues. Around them, the shadows continue to flicker, the lava hisses and the flames crackle. The unnerving shapes in the background seem to be approaching, and the screams of the tortured are growing louder and more desperate.

Team Orra fights among itself, some seeking to harm each other, some seeking to harm themselves, some giving up entirely, and others trying desperately to help. Quinn hangs limply in Khaddar's grasp, not caring if she lives or dies, not fighting back. Blood trickles from the self-inflicted wound in Jibril's leg. Quinn hangs limply in Khaddar's grasp, crying softly.

It starts softly, a rolling chuckle that blends in with the groans of the damned. Within a few seconds, it grows in volume, becoming a booming laugh filled with malice. Team Orra looks to the north, and sees a large...devil step out from behind one of the smoking pools of fire. His grey skin glimmers strangely in the flickering light. As he laughs, enormous dragon-like wings stretch out behind him, and his strong tail lashes. He carries a tall trident in one hand, the barbs dripping with some sort of ooze or poison. In the other hand he has a long whip, which crackles with sparks and flame as he snaps it. He places himself between Team Orra and the shelf, which they can see over his head. Again, he laughs, snaps the whip, and beckons them to approach.

The devil's aspect is so terrifying that they all feel themselves further demoralized; all except Jibril, who is too busy trying to carve himself up to really notice the creature.

Devil is on the map. Everybody but Jibril at further -1 to attack only. PM coming to Duncan only, Round 3 begins.

Another attempt at mind-domination was shrugged off by Duncan. He pitied those around him and wondered how it felt to have such a weak mind.

The devil changed his train of thought, "It's an illusion. An illusion. An illusion." he closed his eyes only to reopen them and see the devil again. He gulped.

Torn between what to do, he could not allow the devil any closer. So he called on his angels, not a 'boonie' but a spider, a big spider.

After gesturing the angelic animal appeared next to the devil and attacked.

Meanwhile Duncan kept trying to rouse his companions, "STOP THIS NONSENSE. THERE'S A DEVIL. I THINK IT'S REAL!"

With Quinn laying helpless on the ground, it takes little to no effort for Khaddar to unfasten the sash at his wrist and lash it repeatedly around her wrists and one ankle, leaving the rogue bound hand and foot while he turns on the wolf. The devil rumbled a laugh as the spider lashed out at him, and he easily dodged aside. With a flick of his well-muscled wrist, his fiery whip lashed out and wrapped around two of the spiders legs. He pulled back, but the spider held its ground, refusing to be tripped or pulled aside.

As Elia approached the devil, she could feel the heat pouring off the devil's skin, and from the pool of lava behind her. One wrong move and she would slip backwards into the molten rock.

Quinn lay tied up on the steaming rocky ground, weeping as if grief were breaking her heart. Ifanna attempted to defend the prone woman, barking at lashing out at Khaddar, forcing him back a step. She then held her ground, growling at the dwarf but not attacking further.

Duncan continued to scream at the others, ordering them to snap out of it. Another shadow flickered in the firelight, as though something else were moving closer to them, coming from the south. And then...

It was somewhat of a miracle that Quinn was able to get her hand on her dagger without slitting her own wrist, but once she had it in hand, she made short work of Khaddar's bonds. Jumping to her feet, she rubbed her wrists and looked around, figuring out what was going on. At her feet, Ifanna pawed her muzzle and whined.

The spider angel reared up on four legs, then lunged forward disgustingly fast to land a bite on the devil's bare thigh. The dark-skinned devil flinched backwards, its laugh turning into a hiss of pain or annoyance.

Khaddar and Jibril made a run for the shelf. The dwarf ran madly, the half-elf a little less so. Khaddar evaded the devil, attempting to climb straight up the obsidian wall. His legs were mighty and his aim was good, but his arms were too short. He was at least three feet shy of the shelf, and landed back down on the cavern floor with a mighty clang of his cleats.

Elia attacked with tooth and claw, with a fury that seemed to surprise the devil. Huge rents appeared in his flesh, and black ichor oozed slowly from them. With a snarl that sent sparks rolling into the air, he vanished with a painful clap of thunder and the smell of sulphur, only to immediately appear in the pool of lava and fire beside Elia.

Lashing out with his whip, he snapped it perilously close to the witchwolf's head, but she dodged aside by the skin of her teeth.

No blood? she murmurs softly, staring bewildered at the devil's gaping, spurting wounds. No blood...flood, dud, flower bud...bed, dead, fled...Meat, no meat, no treat...

While Elia stands motionless, Ifanna doesn't - startled at movement behind her, the wolf wheels around from her cowering and snaps at Quinn as she tries to rise, her growl at once angry and plaintive.

Jibril makes a running jump for the shelf acrobatics: 1d20 + 8 - 2 ⇒ (19) + 8 - 2 = 25 and, with a guttural grunt of effort, gets a remarkable six feet of air with his six foot height giving him an 8' reach he should be able to get forearm onto the shelf ... is he able to clamber up on the same round? Otherwise, he dangles there flat footed

Well, there goes half of Quinn's hitpoints...

Quinn finally gets free only to be mauled by Ifanna. Since the attack was completely unprovoked, the rogue was caught off guard. The wolf clamps onto the rogue's leg preventing her from moving towards the shelf as she'd planned. Quinn cries out in pain and sees that the wolf's muzzle is bloody as she releases her thigh. Before she can bite her again, Quinn twists away instead of using her readied dagger. She didn't want to hurt Ifanna, at least not yet.

Using acrobatics to move away from threatened square and towards the shelf

Oh, come on! Who can jump SIX FEET UP!?!? Who are you, Shaq? I don't think you can move, jump AND pull yourself up all in 6 seconds. So, not exactly just hanging around, but in process of getting up. Unless, of course, Khaddar pulls you down....

Jumping is part of movement, not its own action. So he moves towards the wall 10 feet, up five feet of distance from the jump, and hits the ledge. It is a move action to get up/pull up, usually Climb DC15 without sufficient supports or hand-holds to help you climb up from there. Smoothish ground made of dirt is a terrible handhold. If his climb roll is ten to 14 he flounders there, if it's 9 or less he falls again. This also means it was completely impossible for the Dwarf Monk to ever make the jump, even un-shaken!

Magic GM Window:
1d100 ⇒ 651d8 + 1 ⇒ (1) + 1 = 2

Khaddar lands nimbly, arms outstretched, and turns to face the wall again, hoping, at least, that the forward rush with a spiked metal surface will have left some sort of handhold on the wall for him to wedge fingers into. Instead he comes face to face with a reflection shimmering in the dark stone. The curve of the whip in the air behind him and the warp of heat on air seems to make the image crawl in slow motion. He tilts his head, seeing the flicker of light, and the outline of a door... In surprise, he rushes forward, arms outstretched... And smashes his skull into the black rock hard enough to draw blood.

Blinking in surprise and betrayal, he peers curiously at the outline, head tilting slowly as he tries to make out the contours of the portal in dark stone, light playing fascinating patterns off glinting rock that promises safety just beyond.

There you have it. Climb roll, please, Jibril.

Jibril gets an elbow bent over the shelf. He hoists himself upwards .. he can see the top and grins like a sun peaking out from behind an eclipse. Aha! .. I shall become a boon to all of my new friends ... a force for helping us win the laurel Then his hand slips and his mouth goes agape. This is unfortunate for he drops backwards, smacks his jaw against the shelf edge and flops to the ground which is thankfully only seven feet below his feet.

Duncan could not believe that people were still turning on each other; he instructed the spider to defend them as he neared the dwarf and half-elf trying to get up on the shelf.

"I can help you, Shorty."

He then pulled out a slim, ebony stick, covered in spiderweb relief. "A gift from the spiders... Look at your hands and knees, they should be sticky, enough to climb."

"Now hurry!"

Duncan cast spider climb from wand on Khaddar

Quinn danced away from Ifanna, while Khaddar tried to escape by running into the wall. Jibril very nearly managed to climb up, but ended up back on the ground with a bloody lip for his trouble. Duncan waved his magic wand, knowing it will help.

The devil, now wreathed in flame, thrust his long trident at Elia, who stood there babbling rhymes about meat. The red-hot metal tore straight into her leg and out again, but she was so lost in her confusion that she didn't react.

The spider lashed out at the devil again, biting deep into his arm, drawing another ooze of black ichor.

Another rumbling laugh, sounding like rock grinding over rock, came from the shadows to the northeast. A second devil, almost identical to the first, stomped out of the fire on cloven feet, snapping a fiery whip. The heat of the lash warmed Duncan's cheek, and it smelled like his hair was burning.

Go go round six. Effects of confusion are over.

Free of teammates trying to kill her, at least for the time being, Quinn resheathes her dagger and sprints for the wall. She drops her pack and pulls out her grappling hook. I'm so glad this didn't get left up top.

She throws it to the top of the shelf and gives it a tug to make sure it latched before starting to climb.

I think it's too much to expect that she can climb as well. We'll leave that until next turn.

@Quinn - take a look at the map. How are you getting to the shelf? It's getting pretty crowded up there, with Khaddar, Duncan, and now a 2nd devil. Put your character where you want her to be, and tell me which devils you're drawing AoO from.

"Ach, thank ye, Pompous Idiot! We may win this yet!" Khaddar goes straight up the wall, uncrossing his eyes as he goes. The growing purple goose-egg on his forehead threatens to malform his eye-socket for a while, but otherwise the thickness of the Dwarven Skull wins out against that skull-cracking noise his head made when it hit the wall. He somehow manages to scamper at his regular walking speed, arriving on top of the ledge with time enough to decide what he's going to do with what he finds when he gets there...

Elia's leg skewered by a trident?! Jibril's attention is split, he wants to try to get between the second devil and Duncan but cannot see the Elia is breaking from her logorrhea. He scrambles to her side limping on his slit leg.

There was something...something important. She'd been trying to tell them...or was it someone else trying to tell her? Treat, feet, feel, real...real, real... Suddenly, Elia gasps loudly, snapping back to herself as her eyes light up; for a moment, she stares hard at her leg as it reveals a great truth to her. Not real! They're not real! I'm not hurt! Ifanna, here! Once more, she throws herself into the fray against the devil, reveling now in the fleeting feeling of invincibility; her companion darts across the field to face her opposite the devil, and the two harry the devil as one.

Five-foot step forward and fight some more! I can't tell for sure what size the devils are supposed to be, but it looks like we can flank them from where we're at; if I'm incorrect, let me know!

"Pompous idiot? Really? Pompous?"

Duncan was aghast by the dwarf's show of gratitude.

"Well, is it safe to go up there?"

He moved away from the devil and let the spider attack it while he yelled at Khaddar, "I was hoping you could carry me up there. You know like piggy-back. Ever play that?"

In the meantime, the spider continued to attack the devil, the devil next to Duncan that is.

Duncan used the wand on himself allowing him to climb up if it was safe to do so.

Elia, Jibril and Ifanna tear into the devil, with newfound confidence. Khaddar scampers up the wall to the shelf, with Quinn and Duncan not so very far behind. As soon as the dwarf clears the shelf to see what it holds...

...There is a flash of light and a strange popping noise. And everything in the room disappears. No vision of hell, no lava, no devils, nothing at all. Just a bare room with a high ceiling, stone walls and a shelf with five objects on it. There's a closed door under the wall, and a few glowing globes hovering near the roof, providing a faint light.

On the shelf are five triangular stones. Each side is about as long as Khaddar's forearm, and as thick as the length of his thumb. The stone is a smooth grey marble, and one side has been carved with deep lines scoring the surface. The back sides are smooth.

I'm posting a link to a folder with pics of the five stones. Each one has a random number assigned to it.

On the west side of the room, almost near the ceiling of the cavern, a shadowy recess with three viewing portals cut into it.

Does the phantasmal terrain disappear for the people on the ground, too? Did we stop being shaken?

Khaddar blinks blearily around his throbbing headache, and picks up the stone with the faces on it. "Aye, looks like we foond oor puzzle pieces. Big heavy ones, a' that. I don' figure I could carry all o' 'em at once, ken. Must be a stones weight each. Like all taegether they weigh as much as oor Quinn." Tucking the stone under his arm he steps over to the wall and puts the other hand up on it, and with one hand and one foot, slides down the wall like one would down a gentle slope, with great ease and great finesse, the magic amplifying his already adequate climbing abilities out of this world.

"Does anyone see a slot er' mural or summat tae plug these intae?"

Yes, the illusions have all been dispelled. Shaken condition is over, as are any other residual spell effects. The damage you did to each other, or yourselves, is real. Angel spider is still around, looking hale and healthy.

Something will happen when Khaddar gets to the ground with the stone. I'll wait a moment to allow for other reactions, but don't get too far ahead.

Jibril seems to be able to relax for the first time since they entered this room and his serine demeanour reappears. He limps about collecting his equipment, starting with his bow. He calls out from the ground: "How many stones are there? Five?"-
One for each of us. Is that a coincidence? Or are they each a key to a new door? It is more likely Khaddar is right. We will find other stones. - He scans the room to see if others have left important equipment laying about tag and occasionally looks up at the viewing portals "I think we are being evaluated." and he points them out.

Duncan started looking at the stones and confessed, "I'm trying to see if there's one that's clearly bet-- different than the rest. If so, it's probably my stone."

Once the camera is pointed to him, the young man puffed his chest out, smoothed his unruly, blonde curls, and waved, all the while mouthing 'Hi MOM'.

Is there still a ledge or was that an illusion as well?
