Discussion goes here! :)

Yay! I've played a few of your games before and loved it! Thanks for the invite :)

male

So yeah, I'd like to give this game a try.

I got a strong Hunger Games vibe to this; is this the idea? (but with a winning team instead of a single winner).

Will the game be starting with the trials or will there be roleplaying before that?

What classes and races are allowed? Is the world also home brew like Cenesa?

I guess kind of hunger game-ish, but more people survive than just the winners. More of a cross between Adventurer Olympics and hunger games.

Not sure when the game will start - it can depend on what interest is. We can start right with the start of the game, or roleplay the group getting together, or start earlier. No definite plans yet.

Not a specific homebrew world, just a generic fantasy world. Any class/race would be fine, though I'm not familiar with some of the less common of both, so I wouldn't be able to help much with them. It could work for good or evil characters.

Whoever the group ends up being, you could start as a group, or as a meeting from the lottery. I've asked Jussi and Harakani too, and my brother in law will be joining too.

Probably starting at level 2 or 3.

Any more questions? I'm happy to make some answers up as I go along.

male

One thing though, I find that we need more background if we're going to RP the 'before the game' scenes'.

Questions like: were we forced to participate? did we volunteer? how did we come together as a team? were we prisoners?

I remember I used a 'rejects scenario' for a similar setup in Mummy's mask where the PC were those left over when everyone else made up their teams.

Starting level 2-3 is cool; my personal favorites are 4th-9th.

Ooh, you should port this over to a 'planet' so we can use the new Starfinder rules and have another chance to get used to them.

Kind of like a post-apoc death game. :)

If we're not porting this over, I'd like to try out a brawler...

I'd lean towards rogue, but don't worry because they'd be quite different from Beth.

That, or a ranger.

There will be more background coming, as I iron out the details. I'm back in BC now, and very jetlagged, so it'll come when it comes. :)

I'm definitely not porting anything over, I have barely got a handle on Pathfinder rules. Not willing to try my maiden voyage as a pbp GM with a new system.

As for why you're participating - that's up to you. Officially, all contestants are volunteers - people WANT to play. Unofficially - who knows? You could be conscripted, blackmailed, bribed, etc. Or you could be a glory seeker. Also up to you about the team comes together. If you have a preference, chat with the others about it.

More coming....slowly....

male

So this is not what I was expecting. It seems this is a very high magic world. It feels like sci-fi.

So who else is playing besides Shari and I?

I'd like to start discussing shared backgrounds and other stuff or is it too early?

I'm assuming you won't be doing turn recaps?

It's not so much a high magic world, but rather Ibith is a high magic area. The game creates a huge amount of money for the city, and money attracts magic.

I have one other player so far - Corey (GotYer6) - and I expect he'll introduce himself in the next day or so. I'm looking for one or two more. Jussi and Harakani said no. I'll reach out to Joana next. Any other ideas?

Never too early to talk about backgrounds etc.

No turn recaps for me. :)

male

It used to be that it was difficult to find reliable GMs but now I am seeing that it is more and more difficult to find reliable players as well.

I think we can play this short game with three players but you'll want a couple of more players to get any kind of roleplaying going on.

So if I go with a rogue...she's from a rich family but enjoys the thrill of taking things from other people. She's highly competitive and a little bit of a daredevil. Her childhood friend was the grandson of one of their longtime servants but he was a bad influence which is how she got into thievery. Because of her competitive nature, she was always striving to be better than him.

I haven't really fleshed out the ranger much but can if Corey is burning to play a rogue.

I think Corey is looking at a ranger.

Sweet! So Corey could be a ranger and Fabian a brawler. We'd be a little light on magic but there's always magical items and potions I guess.

We would be very light in magic and healing.

BTW, this is why you should switch to Starfinder rules. :P

Should I change?

I could go with an inquisitor (minor healing) that summons creatures ala monster tactician, which would give us some flexibility. I would do minor healing and focus on ranged combat (as much as possible with an inquisitor).

Will the ranger be up melee, ranged, or switcher?

Fabian, if you want to play a brawler then go for it. We'll figure out the other stuff. My rogue can make sure she has make points in UMD and rogue talents allow for minor magic.

Plus, hopefully Ang will be able to track down other people to play.

Thanks for the offer but I think I will do the inquisitor/monster tactician.

It will give us some minor healing and other abilities not provided by rogue and/or ranger. Besides, I'm looking forward to summoning at least a few times per day. :)

Game on!

1 person marked this as a favorite.

Cool, I don't know much about the inquisitor class - I don't think I've ever even played with one. But the monster tactician looks cool.

Here is the character build information:

    *We'll start at 3rd level.
    *20 point buy
*starting gold 1500 gp (less than normal WBL, but that reflects the cost to enter the games).
    *background skills apply
*you may take two traits, and one optional drawback for a third trait

10 minute background please:

    *2 important/defining life events
*3 quirks/habits that define your PC
*3 people tied to your PC: one related, one friendly, on unfriendly
*2 secrets, one known by your PC, one unknown by them
*your PCs main goal for entering the great game.

I'm not sure what sort of ranger Corey is aiming to play; I'll ask him to chime in. I'm going to ask a few more people, and if I get nothing, then I'm going to open up the recruitment thread to try and find one or two more players.

Any other questions? Did I miss anything for character creation?

Hi All - sorry for the late intro. Love the discussion so far. This is Corey (GotYer6) in Halifax. Looked over pathfinder and the rules are very similar to D&D edition I last played. Not familiar with the exotic classes so my character generation will probably be a bit generic.

I have some character ideas but I want to go through the Great Game write up again before getting concrete.

In short - thinking of a half-elven ranger who was always fascinated by The Great Game since he first heard of it. He has been recently rejected by his superstitious 'tribe' after the enigmatic death of his elven father. He has vague memories of a human mother whom his father never spoke about. On his own but not a loner, he wants to find a team - participate - maybe this is what he was meant for.

Welcome!

I know what class I want to play but I'm having problems with the 'personality' of my PC.

I'm leaning towards a stuck-up, self-centered young man who's out to prove the world that 'his shit don't stink' but I don't want to make too much of an 'a!!+@+*' or he'll die quickly. :)

I'll mull on this a little longer.

Game on!

Hey, making a "disposable" PC might be fun! There's room to switch up the team within the Game, and making somebody who likely won't make it could be fun. Then you could switch to your brawler. Or vice versa. :)

Oh, this guy would be fun. There's no doubt about that.

I'm just not sure how long he will be fun for. :)

Welcome Corey! I know I met you at Angie's wedding but you may not remember me.

I'm still working on my 10min background which I hope to have up somewhat soon.

male

OK, we'll go with the young man whose shit don't stink. :)

But I will change his class so I can make CHA my main stat, as befits a stuck up dude. :)

I'll make him an unchained summoner and take the master summoner archetype but I won't have an eidolon and simply rely on the summon monster spells. You know, disposable monsters to serve me. :)

However, I won't riddle the place with critters and will only have one summons spell active at any one time and only summon 1 creature (not 1d3) at a time.

Since I won't have an eidolon, maybe you can compensate that with something else if you feel like it but that's not necessary.

Thoughts?

Okay, inquisitor out, summoner in. I PM'd you, Fabian.

I'm getting some good feedback on the recruitment thread, so hopefully we'll have our full team soon. If there's not a healer in the group, I can certainly work around that in-game. You guys won't be screwed for lack of a cleric.

Here's Quinn's 10min bkgd:

Spoiler:

*physical description
Quinn’s full name is Quinnella Beatrice Starling. She stands at 5’8 with black curly hair, dark brown eyes, and dark skin. She is willowy.

*2 important/defining life events
Quinn was born into a wealthy family. She is the middle child of five which caused her to become very competitive as she felt she had to be the best to be noticed by her parents. However, anything she did went unnoticed. Her father's only focus was his work as a barrister and her mother's only focus for Quinnella was to train her to be a proper lady who would someday marry a nice young man and continue her family’s social status. Quinn wanted none of it.

Quinn began hanging around with their housekeeper’s grandson, Timothy. Timothy’s grandmother had to bring him to work with her a few times and Quinn thought he was cute. She started following him around but it turned out that he was a bad influence on her. He had a habit of breaking into the houses in her neighborhood and taking things. He told her that the people were so rich that they never noticed things were gone and that he needed it more than they did. Because she liked him, she never turned him in. Instead, she learned a few things from him and because of her competitive nature, she did her best to get better than him.

She got bolder and bolder in her own forays into thievery which ended in an emotionally scarring incident. She took a piece of jewelry from a family in the neighborhood during one of her outings with Timothy that ended up being a family heirloom. They were very distraught at the loss and Quinn was too concerned about herself to turn herself in. The theft ended in the family acquaintance committing suicide. She’s felt guilty ever since but not enough to stop because she never feels more alive than when she’s picking someone’s pocket or disarming traps or sneaking around somewhere she shouldn’t be.

*3 quirks/habits that define your PC
1) She really doesn't like birds
2) Has a victory chant: “Go Starling, it’s your birthday. Go Starling, it’s your birthday.”
3) Often flips a coin to make decisions

*3 people tied to your PC: one related, one friendly, on unfriendly
Mother – Vivienne Starling
Friendly – Timothy Saunders
Unfriendly – Anna Young (daughter of family acquaintance who committed suicide who believes Quinn knows something but can’t prove it)

*2 secrets, one known by your PC, one unknown by them
Unknown: The ‘family heirloom’ actually belonged to a crime family which is why the neighbor was so distraught. They were entrusted with it but couldn’t keep it safe and they were blamed for it’s loss rather than the person who actually took it.
Known: That Timothy and herself are responsible for the break-ins in her affluent neighborhood.

*your PCs main goal for entering the great game.
Timothy entered as part of another team and she’s determined to beat him and his team. The challenge of the safe by Strongarm Safe and Security has also piqued her competitiveness.

Suggestions?

Hey guys! I've been sucked in, too. :) I'm contemplating some variety of divine caster, but I'm not sure of particulars yet. (Probably not a full-on healbot, but of course they'll have some healing ability by dint of being a divine caster.) Angie, what are your thoughts on non-core races? I keep trying to play a skinwalker and getting cut short, and a witchwolf trying to channel wilder impulses into something more socially acceptable than wanton destruction appeals to me. :)

Here's Duncan...

10 minute Background
*physical description
- blonde (of course) hair
- dresses to show off status
- good looking, augmented with subtle makeup
- on the thin side but not overly so
*2 important/defining life events
- born second (meaning his older brother gets to inherit the family business consisting of wine yards and orchards)
- his mother took him in when she saw that his father had taken away his older brother for business training; he was pampered to the extreme and truly believes what his mother always told him, “You are a beautiful boy and deserve only the very best.”
*3 quirks/habits that define your PC
- sighs as if bored when speaking
- wants to be center of attention
- truly thinks he deserves the very best
- others are here to help/serve him because that is reward enough
- compares others to summoned creatures who obey him without question
- constantly aware of his appearance
- clean and refined in his dress/manners
*3 people tied to your PC: one related, one friendly, on unfriendly
- Related: mother who loves him to death and is very afraid that her son will not be safe in these ‘stupid games’;
- Friendly: his older brother who thinks that things are way too easy for him and that he should involve himself in the family business (Duncan is only interested in receiving his monthly stipend so he can spend it away in partying);
- Unfriendly: father who keeps repeating that a freeloader like Duncan is ‘not his son’
*2 secrets, one known by your PC, one unknown by them
- Known: he failed his aptitude tests to enter the Wizard’s Academy on purpose. He could have passed the tests but did not want to commit his time to studying with a bunch of stuffy old wizards when he had natural talent and life to party. He knows he’s smarter than people make him out to be.
- Unknown: his mother bribed the wizards of the Academy to give him a very simple test, promising that his son would never enter their prestigious study halls. He really is as stupid as people think he is.
*your PCs main goal for entering the great game.
- “Goal? I just want to finish this quickly and get back home; the ball season is starting and I’m going to miss the Morrimor’s Masquerade. Wait, is that Elena Morrimor? How do I look?”

@Ang: Are there any limits to the traits? Can they come from the same category?

Welcome Quinn and Duncan! Duncan's secrets made me giggle - nice ones! I like how Quinn's avatar already looks disapproving of Duncan. :)

@Shari- go wild - pick traits from the same category. Things are getting crazy!

@Rennai - I don't think a witchwolf would be overpowered. Go for it. A witchwolf cleric would be very interesting! Though you don't need to tie yourself to that class. There will be magical healing available in the Game.

Things are coming along!

Female Witchwolf Lunar oracle 4

At this point I'm actually thinking lunar mystery oracle. Witchwolf stats don't line up quite as well, but I can get Charisma to Armor Class, a wolf animal companion, and come on - werewolf-blooded lunar oracle, it fits. ;) She'll be a warrior-type fighting with tooth and claw, and will be using her spellcasting more for buffing and support than for offense. I'm working on a full ten-minute background and statblock over the weekend, but here is a taste:

Elia Aoine, witchwolf extraordinaire:
Elia Aoine grew up as part of a family of hunters in the north, fiercely devoted to and protective of her kin. She came of age, and her uncle took her on her first hunt; her thrill grew and grew until it became a bloodlust. When she finally closed the distance on the elk she'd been tracking, her face erupted forward into a short muzzle, her teeth lengthened so quickly they cut into her lower lip, and she fell forward onto hands that had shrunk into paws, the nails turning into sharp claws with which she pinned the beast down as she tore into its veins.

A witchwolf had been born into the clan, it seemed, and stories of her kind had only too prominent a place as horror stories told around the fire. At first, her mother and father told her to simply ignore her urge to transform; she faithfully attempted to heed her parents' advice, but before long her face was beginning to lengthen at even the slightest provocation. When she found herself an inch away from snapping her jaws on a friend's throat after losing a heated round of spear-tossing, her parents had had enough. She was sent on her way with only the barest survival equipment the next day, forced to make her way on her own.

Distraught at being separated from her "pack", Elia let herself slip deep into her animalistic instincts. For two years, she survived by hunting, gorging herself when she succeeded at getting a kill and letting hunger gnaw at her when she didn't. One day, she was preparing to leap at a huge badger hunched beneath an overhanging of pine branches when it let out a grunting scream; from the branches' shadow emerged a woman in soft green robes. Far from being fearful, though, the woman merely smiled.

Aelis was a druidess, in tune with the magic of the natural world, and to her, Elia was just another creature caught in nature's cycles. With time, Aelis began to teach Elia how to keep her violent instincts in check and control her shapeshifting. The moon was the driver of her transformations, Elia learned, and only by heeding its patterns could she achieve full control. Aelis also reminded Elia that wolves are social creatures - her human and wolf sides both needed a pack to thrive, and being a "lone wolf" would lead her to ruin. Aelis helped Elia to raise and train a wolf cub found abandoned, but it just wasn't enough to satisfy her need to belong.

Despite Aelis' teaching, Elia still didn't trust herself among the civilized. She'd never had much use for refinement or niceties anyway, and the animal within made even the rough nomad's life she'd led before difficult. But the Great Game - that was where her brutal instincts would let her shine. The thrill of the hunt, the rush of a fresh kill...in the Game, she could have all that and be accepted. Applauded, even. So she made her way; now, she stands on the cusp of the most exciting hunt of her life, with a new pack to earn her place in.

so... just some crazy thoughts so feel free to ignore them.

With the way that I intend to play Duncan, he won't be very popular. But it will be fun. :)

How about if you need a sponsor to participate in the 'Games' and there are no sponsors left, meaning the PCs got there too late or something and just can't participate. Unless... they join Duncan's Team (Team Name: Duncan and his Gang) who has his family's sponsorship and needs some really good team members (because he sucks). :)

Angie, if my levity is not what you had in mind for the game then please tell me so and I'll 'shut up'.

Thoughts?

I do love the avatar, he looks like a total tool. As for levity - the Game is open to all, the serious and the fools alike, so go for it! :)

Sponsorship doesn't work with a few things I have in mind, but as it looks like most of you will be coming in separately, it'll work nicely for you to have been put together by lottery. Then it doesn't matter how much you hate each other. Hopefully Duncan is able to prove his worth sooner rather than later, or he might find himself abandoned or worse once inside the GameFields. :)

Elia looks great! I'm already rubbing my hands together in anticipatory glee of a few places I can totally take advantage of her background engage in some really excellent storytelling....

Umm...gotta go...

I've invited Purplefinder to join the game with Khaddar, and I assume he'll be along shortly to introduce himself.

I'm hoping to have everybody's crunch and fluff done by the end of next weekend, so we can get going. I should be ready by then. Fingers crossed.

We'll be starting in the great plaza outside Champions Gate. This is the exit to the GameFields, and is where any major announcements/activities happen prior to the games beginning. The Ibith Game Authority will be announcing team composition here, and you'll meet your teammates.

Two days later, the Game will begin.

May the Obelisk be waiting for you.

Male Undead (Augmented) Monk 1/Expert (Gamer) 2

I'm here shortly! The approvals came just as I passed out for bed.

Angie mentioned, and it's true, that I have a 'high level of system mastery'. I really know my way around pathfinder, and can usually recite rules (and sometimes even actual page numbers) off the top of my head. I keep a copy of the core rulebook in my bathroom and read it over and over again. I've been gaming for 27 years, and this is my game of choice, and in fact what I tend to write my papers on in University. I'm getting a gaming focused English degree... very... slowly...

I know the weird secret tricks, like Sleep and Enlarge Person being one round casting times. And partial charges working on surprise rounds. And how underwater combat works. And -exactly- how to determine cover.

If anybody ever needs help or advice on character building or how to accomplish certain goals or advances in character, in order to fit with the theme and story you want your character to tell, by all means let me know! I'll be very happy to weigh in where I can, and help you scour the Archives and D20PFSRD to find out exactly how that's accomplished in the rules. If you're familiar with D&D 3.5, you're not really jumping into the deep end here; Attacks of opportunity, character level vs class level, spells and spell casting, all these things will be very familiar. I'm really looking forward to the game, and I hope I can be of help wherever you might need me!

@Angie/Quinn
Like how normally, the only limit on traits is that even with the Extra Traits feat, you can't have two traits from the same category. But you heard Angie... -craaaaazy-! XD

For people who didn't stop in to read two foot long lists of crunchy things, Khaddar is a gimmick build. He's a knockdown artist who appears to have lots of options in combat. If he can get up next to someone, he can usually knock them down to start, or stun them and set them up for the rest of the team to abuse. As the game progresses he'll add grappling and dirty tricks to his repertoire, which allows him to blind, entangle, sicken, knock down, pin, and tie up, all in rapid order, which is hillarious.

From a completely gamist point of view, he's what you'd call a 'controller', his job is to weaken and lock down enemies so they can't use their powers on the party. He is not a primary damage dealer! The ranger will mop them up, the oracle will keep us moving, the summoner will keep us safe, every body else picks off the stragglers and handles environmental effects. This'll be fun.

Male Undead (Augmented) Monk 1/Expert (Gamer) 2

Also, so that I'm not stepping on the rogue's roguey toes, I'm going to shift Khaddar to a Makeshift Scrapper archetype for Rogue. That leaves her as our trapfinder, Khaddar doesn't do that.

Purplefixer - we're glad to welcome your expertise to the group. Just be aware that it my game, story will trump rules if they go toe-to-toe, and there may be house rules that come up on the fly. However, I'll try to make things fair, and take everybody's input, and hopefully it'll work to everybody's enjoyment.

I'm adding a new skill: Knowledge (Games). This represents how familiar you are with the history of the games, how religious you've been about watching past games, etc. This is a class skill for everybody, because it doesn't really have anything to do with your profession; rather, with your "down time". As you can imagine, this skill may come in handy within the GameFields, to figure out where to go, how to defeat traditional challenges, etc.

There are a plethora of books, pamphlets, papers etc about the history of the games, past champions, philosophy of the games, maps of the GameFields, Tips and Tricks for winning, etc etc, basically anything you can think of. All of this is contraband within the game. Contestants will be searched upon entering the GameFields, and any contraband will be removed, and points deducted from your team before you even start. This doesn't stop people from trying....

Male Undead (Augmented) Monk 1/Expert (Gamer) 2

Absolutely!

I usually keep a document of house-rules so I can keep track of those too. Table Errata. :p

Here is my background ... sorry, it got pretty long:

:

Description
Jibril Johan Sameh stands tall, maybe six feet, but is lithe with the muscles of a marathon runner. He has the presence of a boy waiting to be noticed dressed in a man’s clothes. There is some ancient rust coloured tattoo on his forehead barely legible.
It’s as though someone made a full sized doll in the likeness of an elf and stuffed it sparingly with straw. His long beige hair is like straw. His eyes are too small and dark to show off the glamour of the elven people. This doesn’t so much make him look ugly as it offends people’s expectation of what an elf should be. He looks like an elf … with the magic turned off.
He wears poor threads that are well fitted. Perhaps they were worth something once but now they are torn and unimpressive - isn’t it funny how that tear in his cloak is the size and shape of a bear’s claw? Under the torn cloak things are tied to his body … a clinking pouch, what looks like a curved rod ending in a sheath, a small leather roll, a large leather roll and a larger canvas roll.

Two defining life events
1) When Jibril was five his mother, Ealani, woke him early. She didn’t look worried, she looked proud. He dressed, she kissed his head, gave him a tiny copper medallion and walked him outside. Two men were waiting. No, not men, too tall for men, elves. He had never seen an elf before. On their cloaks were elaborately embroidered images of the sun. He left with them and never saw his mother again.
When he arrived he was introduced to a radiant elf - Jibril’s father. An excited group of young elves with tattooed faces welcomed him and offered to give him his elvish tattoo. When they were done he rushed to show his father who looked greatly dismayed. The tattoo was the symbol for ‘wasim’ the elven word for hansom.

2) Jibril had lived with the family tribe of elves for twelve years under the austere eye of his father, Hadthadalim. He discovered that his people are sun worshippers who are learned in the respectful rites of the dead. While out night-hunting with his father, Jibril was attacked by a ghostly elven rider. Hadthadalim saved his son and, after a lengthy battle, ‘becalmed’ the spirit he latter called a revenant. Within seven days Hadthadalim grew colder and colder until was gone.
The tribe saw this a terrible omen and banished Jibril.

Three quirks
When Jibril is unconfident, embarrassed or unsure he grabs the straw like hair above his forehead. He is unconsciously hiding his tattoo.
Jibril will talk/introduce himself to peoples pets before he talks to the owners.
Jibril often forgets to tell people what he is thinking and assumes that they ‘just know’.

Three people tied to Jibril
Related: Jibril’s uncle (Ealani’s brother) Jaska had been looking in on Jibril through messengers since Jibril started living with his father. Jaska doesn’t know where his sister is and is now worried that he has lost track of Jibril after the banishment.
Friendly: Ri’dwan, Jibril’s father’s best friend, took a chance on teaching Jibril archery and has been the only advisor of Jibril’s youth. He helped Jibril retain some of his father’s things - now sold to pay for the entry fee.
Unfriendly: The tribe of his father especially the leading council and of that especially the son of the tribal lore keeper.

A secret known to Jibril
Jibril discovered a worn ballot for The Game amongst Ri’dwan’s things. His father’s best friend was once a contestant but hid it.

A secret unknown to Jibril
Jibril’s last name is not his family name but another given name chosen by his mother. It is also his father’s ‘taboo’ name, a name chosen by an elf at the age of adulthood and only told to the most intimate of friends. Hadthadalim’s best friend, Ri’dwan, also knows it.

Jibril’s main goal in entering The Game
He thinks he is joining The Game to make a name for himself and to show the elves that rejected him that he is somebody but really he is looking for connections, friends, a surrogate family.

Angie - please let me know if there is something you'd like me to alter for texture continuity or whatever. :)

Female Witchwolf Lunar oracle 4

I've got Elia's statblock mostly put together, but I still need to get stats for her animal companion in there. I also need to finish writing her background - it's been a heck of a weekend...

Female Witchwolf Lunar oracle 4

And now I've got Elia's statblock and background almost all put together! :) One question: would it be possible for me to get a bridle of tricks with the hunt, seek, and track tricks? It seems like a set of tricks that makes sense to have together on it, and it's something she'd for sure want. If not, it's fine, I can pick other stuff.

I'm hoping to have everybody's crunch and fluff done by the end of next weekend, so we can get going. I should be ready by then. Fingers crossed.

Sorry but what is crunch and fluff?

Thanks

I've changed my avatar name to agree with my character name - hope it's not confusing

Yeah, what she said.

You've already finished the 'fluff'; you can copy the format I use for your 'crunch'.

You will have to 'edit profile' on your profile.

Let me know if you need help formatting or anything else.

Game on!
