With Vernon incarcerated, he would be out of the picture and unable to interfere with your business correct Mrs. Eleanor? Ghiv asks

Daisy's plan would depend on how seriously drug laws are enforced in 2090 NAC, if they even still have drug laws or anything like the current 'war on drugs.' What is the relationship between drug runners and the police in this part of Denver/NAC? Also, how likely would Vernon be able to buy off trouble from the police? The campaign book describes the Denver area has a lot of religious organizations and mega-churches, most of whom hate hybrids and such. The Knights of Jehovah are singled out as having a particular hatred of hybrids.

"I'll see what I can come up with," 1dr0meda said after it was suggested she find something to use as pressure or lure on Vernon. She got Eleanor's attention and asked, "Do you have any files on Vernon with useful information I can start with?"

While she waited, she added, "Perhaps we could get the Knights of Jehovah interested in his little business. I'm sure they'd be happy to take him down. They don't like hybrids much, as you probably know. We'd just need to take care that it didn't produce collateral damage to the rest of the hybrid community."

1dr0meda began working on GDN searches once she had everything Eleanor could readily provide on the target.

After a bit, she announces, "Vernon has managed to keep his private dealings private, at least from sources available to me at the moment. Sorry."

Not wanting to produce nothing useful, she starts searching for information on the Knights of Jehovah that might be useful in dealing with Vernon.

Emily, is your plan to get Vernon busted for doing drugs, or for kidnapping a police officer(you)?

1dr0meda:
The Knights are flagging in the news currently for one of their usual routines. Outside the crash site and major areas that were damaged due to falling wreckage, their members are picketing. Signs reading "GOD HATES FURS" and "REPENT FOR YOUR SINS, NAC". Like usual, they're using a tragedy as a platform for their pro-human crusade. And its working. The media is playing up that the pilot of the downed plane was a hybrid, and suggestions running through the new channels are that a human would have been able to dodge the rocket.

Kitsune:
Eleanor whispers back to you briefly. "I know, kiddo. But I've gotta make moves happen quick today. My friend is an AI--he has some kind of insider info. All these people have a vested interest in Phoenix too."

"You kids sure are making this complicated," sighs Eleanor, leaning back from Kitsunes ear. "You could probably get him thrown in jail for what he's peddling, sure. Plus the cops around here are kind of racist." She glances back to the black marks scratched around the edge of her door. "But they're still going to be busy with disaster relief. Your TAP distress idea isn't bad, but you're playing a dangerous game with the cops. You better know what you're doing."

"Please don't involve those church nutters," she continues after reflecting for a minute. "That's going to make things worse, not better. Keep in mind you have a time limit here. I don't know where the guy actually lives, so once they lock the doors to the club in a couple hours, life is going to get a lot harder for everyone."

Ghiv frowns at the lack of info but says Keep trying, you'll find something. Everyone has something. to 1dr0meda.

To Eleanor Ghiv says If we killed Vernon, someone would take his place. If we make an example of him...well. Someone would still take his place, but they'd be a hell of a lot more frightened.

Emily might be on to something. If she can go into the Club and turn her TAP on, perhaps 1dr0meda can mask it a bit. Then the Police will certainly take an interest in the Club. We either use their interest to do what needs doing to Vernon, or we use them to take Vernon out of the picture. One way or another. Either way, we win. Ghiv looks around the room, getting a feel for these assembled runners.

1dr0meda and N30n would be our outside team. Myself, Alanna, Emily and Kitsune would enter. Kitsune will get us in. Emily goes in, turns on her TAP, sends her signal. Once chaos reigns we get in and have a chat with Vernon.

Kitsune looks puzzled for a few moments, then says "Please forgive me, Ghiv, but there's two things I don't understand about your plan. First, 'once chaos reigns' from...um, which one of you is Emily?...turning on her TAP, won't the police be arriving, which would make talking with Vernon difficult? And secondly, just exactly *how* can we make an example of him, in a way the rest of the community would know about?"

Turning to everyone, she says "I get the impression most of you don't know Eleanor as well as I do. I would suggest you heed her advice, she knows these streets well. The more complicated the plan we come up with, the more likely it is to go wrong."

"Sounds like we should just get to the club and improvise. A show of force that takes out his own hired muscle might convince him to relocate. But once we get there we can learn more and perhaps something viable will evolve. I can probably hack the hyper-reality of the club and learn where Vernon lives, assuming there's a file somewhere in their system. But perhaps Kitsune could learn that just by talking to people in the club. Either way, let's get over there and figure out what to do from there."

Alanna jazzes her TAP's Eat or DIE and slots in a number 3 'Breakfast of Champions of Darkness.'
She checks the complimentary 'Anonymous?' box.

Within a handful of minutes there's a knock on the door. Alanna opens it, to reveal a large steaming box sitting on the floor and neither soul nor drone to be seen.

She sets it on the table and extracts several cups and a rubberfoam cylinder of piping soykaf. That's followed by a few other disbos-a-boxes. One contains a hot yellow mass of REALegg* (*REALegg does not contain any actual egg or chicken product) and another contains sloppy floppy steaming strips of YESbaconYES!

She pours herself a hot cuppa' kaf and takes a long pull. She grabs a handful of YESbaconYES and sits on the couch cross-legged.

"What say we at least get in the club an' talk to the guy first? If I can get him to invite me back to his place, that would take care of a lot of logistic probs.

Oh, I'm sorry, N30N, unless you wanted to try throwing your pants in his face? I didn't mean to presume. Or Emily? If you wanted to try and 'predict' his 'groundhog day' I didn't wanna block."

"Ugh," scoffs Eleanor, watching Alanna make out with her not-bacon, over yet another cup of tea. "I think my uterus just curled in on itself. Like a millipede." She stands, opening the garage door and checking over Alanna's cruiser. "I put one of my bots on your car last night. Didn't have any parts to swap out your busted windows or patch those bullet holes with much more than tape, but it was able to buff out most of the scratches and clean off the bloodstains." She takes a step back, letting the little disk-shaped robot on wheels (vRUMBA™ 3.22) roll past her feet and tuck itself into an alcove on her wall.

Alanna's cruiser is still a little worse for wear, but it's been cleaned of scattered glass and blood. If the windows are rolled down and nobody looks too closely at the roof, it barely looks like it was involved in a firefight or stabbed with a K-Tana repeatedly last night. She holds up a holotag that drifts to the center console with directions to the club, a winding but relatively short three mile drive away. She waves you through to the car as soon as everyone's finished their breakfast. "Drive safe, kids," she says. Have fun storming the castle!"

I'm assuming unless somebody contradicts me that y'all are taking Alanna's cruiser/riding your bikes as appropriate.

The Night Owl turns out to be a medium-sized club in a slightly nicer neighborhood than Eleanor's. The windows, tinted so black you can't see anything through them but a faint sense of movement, vibrate from throbbing bass that you can hear outside. A small alcove shades a beefy looking bull hybrid bouncer dressed in shabby Bombs on Broadway wear from what little sunlight is peeking between the skyscrapers in the early morning.

Kitsune, in the lead on her motorcycle, leads the group to some street-curb parking a block or two from the entrance to the club.

Once everyone gets out/off of their vehicles, she says "Well, I guess it's time to 'improvise'. Who's going in, and who's staying outside? In case it's important, where exactly will those of you who stay outside be?

Oh, and one more thing - they're going to ask us to check our weapons at the front door, so...how does that affect your plans, whatever they are?"

Alanna spends a moment in the cruiser to top off her clips for the SMG, and both it and the Six-one-six go into hidden pockets in her longcoat.

"Blargh. Never was much for clubbing, so I'll stay out. I tend to drink too much, start hitting on people I shouldn't, and get into fights. And then finish them by shooting people. Management tends to frown on that, for some reason."

You make it inside the boundary of the network relatively easily. The protection surrounding it, taking the VR form of a barbed wire fence, is a standard corporate access network, and it looks like it hasn't even been cranked up to its maximum restrictions. You know to tread lightly though, as the network is capable of lashing out, lethally or non-lethally, towards intruders. The network stirs faintly with an increase of traffic.

Seeing through Kitsune's eyes as she approaches, you can see the TAP of the big bull hybrid is buzzing with a built-in subvocal com manager, with lines running inside. It looks like there's a rapid back-scatter device inside at the weapons checkpoint. Beside that you can see a secondary network, hidden deeper inside, that only briefly interfaces with this one. Possibly Vernon's private servers?

As Emily approaches the front door, a holotag you ordinarily wouldn't be able to see pops up, silently informing him that someone is approaching with their TAP turned off, and to be advised to use extra caution and move them along.

Alanna:
The buildings even in this part of town are a little too tall and close to get a true rooftop position, but scanning around you can see an apartment complex a building over and across the street. The front door is locked, as are the side doors. However, the fire escape is available, and it looks like there's a common room on the corner with a window, if you can get all the way inside.

Kitsune leads the way as you walk closer to the club. The Bull hybrid exhales through his nose, and rolls his shoulders, his neck flexing with corded muscle as it pops once to the left and once to the right. He crosses his arms, doing his best to look intimidating (and, it should be said that he does). "Beat it vixen," he says to Kitsune in a deep, hollow-sounding voice. "Your humie friends aren't welcome in here."

1dr0meda focuses on a the info screen her hyper reality server shows just above the club, a kind of marquee describing what the club provides. The screen shows various animated furries dancing and such. 1dr0meda improvises a similar look to her VR self and makes a leap to the marquee where she steps into the animated party and loses herself in the signals. When the group approaches, the marquee attempts to modulate the images to match those approaching, which provides a moment of weakness in the firewall that she takes advantage of to get past.

Once in she sees a rainbow of lines depicting data pulsing through the system. She notices one glows orange for a moment and then fades, linking to something deeper in the system, not interacting much with the busier nodes. Before investigating, she moves to view the system entrance where she coordinates the data with what Kitsune's camera is showing. Signals come and go from the bouncer's com.

"Rapid Back-scatter detector right in front of you," 1dr0meda says over a net com line to those with TAPs on. "I'm not likely to do too much in here before I get detected and bounced, so I'm going to try to locate Vernon and that may be all I can do."

Yeah, I'd say Furry's a neutral term between hybrids and decidedly non neutral when used by a human.

The Bull grimaces, his eyes sliding over the humans for a long moment. His eyes particularly fix on Emily as she squirms closer to Kitsune. He finally relents and gives the fox a nod. "Fine," he says, putting two fingers to his neck, no doubt triggering a subvocal comm line. "Hey, Jasper. I've got two wannabes outside. Grab masks." He glances at Ghiv and Emily for another second, hesitating. "Uh... A cat and a bird, let's say." He holds the door open, but continues to give them a hard stare. "Be respectful, or we'll throw your baseline asses out."

The inside is dark, with low lines of LEDs and holotag overlays that move in cage-like patterns on the walls, thrumming in rhythm to the heavy bass line being played inside the club. A counter cuts the room in half, leaving you on the path to walk through a backscatter machine. An owl-man behind the counter with a deep-set scowl stares daggers at Emily as she enters before turning around, his body now facing the same direction as his head. "Here, for you," he says in an eastern European accent, sliding forward two masquerade masks on strings. One, a snow leopard, the other, a peregrine falcon. "Put on, do not take off, sign of respect, you see?" He asks, before gesturing to the scatter machine and into the club.

1dr0meda:
You pass through into the system, revealing a VR overlay of dancers inside the club. Some of them look like automated decorations constantly playing through the system, others look like virtual avatars joining the party in the club from afar, but none of them seem to notice you as you drift through. Following the node down, you're able to get a rough map of the main room--high ceilings, large dancefloor, upper level deck surrounding the dance floor in a ring, and a hallway off to the side that looks promising, and coordinates in hyper reality with the hidden network you're heading towards.

One particular room has several additional cameras and a secondary firewall inside.

The alley is quiet for several minutes, the only sound being the bass you can still hear from the club and faint whirring noises 1dr0meda seems to be producing involuntarily. Then another starts up: loud, drunken singing. Peeking out the other end of the alley, a line of hybrid men stagger down the street, leaning on each other for support. They haven't made it to your alley yet, but you overhear one of them pipe up between the singing: "No, no shut up muhf&+$ers we're on the wrong street man the Night Owl's on fourth and we're on fifth."

Alanna frowns at the high common room. She'd been hoping for something a little more conventional, but you hafta take what you can get.

First she runs back to her cruiser and pops open the hatchback. She unlatches the side cargo area and peers in. She selects an old bottle from south-of-the-boarder. She'd always wanted to try it, but never got the chance. She unscrews both bottle and flask, and tops her flask off. That done, she sips from the bottle, grimacing at the bold taste, but smiles at mild cactus-flavored undertones.

That done, she opts to take the fire-escape up, deciding to do it the 'normal' way...but just this once.

She silently climbs the steps, up, up, up, going to the common room. When she'd there she stops and peers in, making sure it's unoccupied and looking for any lock or way to pop open a window.

Emily slides the mask on. The round blue jay mask was an uncomfortable fit on her oval face and smelt horrible. She gagged initially but swallowed the feeling. Growing up in deep urban phoenix, she had been neighbors with the dregs of society which was accompanied with all kinds of awful smells. Alanna keeps up her investigation of the common room next to the fire escape. If she can't find anything to open, unlock, or otherwise manipulate, she could always use the tar paper...but what fun would that be?

She also takes a pause to look over at the building the night club occupies, drawing in a general layout of the place, in case she needs to get involved in some high-flyin' extra curriculars.

From inside the smaller network, you're able to see a sudden buzz of commotion. A burst of messages flash back and forth, and you're able to neatly capture and read a packet as it passes:

Somebody is paying attention to the network after all. He hasn't locked you down yet, but the SysOp knows something is wrong. You can log out now with little info aside from a general location, but you won't be much help to the inside team, or you can stay and see how it goes.

Alanna:
The common room is fortunately unoccupied, though a scatter of magazines and junk food detritus tells you it probably sees more activity during peak hours. The network cast over the area seems to barely notice that you shouldn't be there, and then opts to ignore you--it looks like this building doesn't have its own network, just an extender that weakly projects the state-funded Wi-Fi through the building. The windows look easy to jimmy open. The old-fashioned physical locks holding it closed look older than you.

The inside of the Night Owl is a throbbing, crowded mess, the sort you get when the club is only open for another hour but everyone wants to keep partying. A DJ at the opposite end of the room is tossing out glowsticks and extracurriculars like candy as he spins a holotag of a record on a deck that's half physical and half hyper reality. The bulk of the room is taken up by a dance floor that's a crush of foreign, dancing bodies and half-human sweat. An extra-large double-width bar takes up the portion of the back wall that isn't claimed by the DJ, and little alcoves surround the outside edge, with curtained-in tables. A quick glance tells you that this is probably where hybrid runners do a lot of their business in Denver.

Notice at a -2, Ghiv and Emily:
Head and shoulders above most of the crowd of dancers is a face you find familiar. Bobbing his head to the beat, Mr. Scales revolves on the spot, failing utterly to blend into the crowd, not that it matters through all the light and noise. The fingers to his neck tell you he's saying something on his subvocal comms as he glances around the room. He hasn't noticed any of you, yet.

Then she peers down at the night club and gets in on the TAP convo. >>>I dunno. Just wander around you see a thicky wanker holding court. Or just ask anyone if they know him. My guess with small-ball types is they try to make sure as many people as possible know who they are and how to find them.

Anyway, I'm set. If you want him room-temp, just get him to come outside.

1dr0meda:
The network heads deeper in, and you're able to isolate a specific door and provide the rest of the team with a path to follow. There's a blank span of room that has network connectivity, but no cameras and no particular data. In front of that, two large hybrids stand guard. In the very back, another, even smaller room has a camera that allows you to see a chubby fox hybrid counting a stack of money. His holotag reads "Vernon Dudley", and below that, a fainter tag, network exclusive, reads <head honcho>.

A private computer terminal occupies the backroom as well. Vernon glances over towards it, waving his hand and wiggling his fingers through a couple of hyper commands, allowing it to boot up. "Print," he says out loud. "Scales, did you get a read yet?"

Alanna:
You look up from your FizzyPOP bottle (Nuclear Apple? Isn't that seasonal?) and see a little hybrid fox kid, ears doubly too-large for his body. He rubs his eyes sleepily, glances at you and wordlessly walks across the room, plopping down on a couch, his filthy feety-pajamas displaying little toe beans. You can see through your HUD that he has no TAP, no tech of any kind. He stares at a blank television screen that he can't turn on without a TAP, completely ignoring you, silently breathing through his snout.

You can faintly hear two shouting voices, a long way down the hall.

Outside, in the club, the music continues to hum, but downshifts into a more mellow, rhythmic song. The crowd, which had been a squash of dancers, disperses slightly into small groups, filling up the space almost completely, but with just enough room to maneuver. The music continues to scale down and slow, eventually stopping completely for just a moment.

Time to move.

N30N:
The hybrids start down the alleyway, a beefy one in the middle of the drunken stagger-line sniffing the air. "See," slurs one. "Toldja its right there!"

"Shut up," scoffs the large one, quietly. "I smell somethin' familiar..." The others laugh around him, elbowing and digging into his ribs.

The TV lights up with a sudden explosion of color and brief, but energetic EDM that blots out the shouts from down the hallway. "What's going on dudes? Commander Sparklez here--" begins the host, a younger human, pretty enough that he's likely gene-coded to 2.0, one side of his face tattooed with a strip of animated stars that pulse in time to his heartbeat. The little fox's face lights up and you get the sense he doesn't get to chose what's on this screen very much. He gives you a nod as you hand him the rest of your Nuclear Apple and takes a long bashful moment of staring at you before his ears perk back up and he quietly says "Finn."

After another minute or two of texting back with everyone inside, your friendly neighborhood delivery drone hovers up to the window. It's a cheaply-made little hex-copter towing a dual-cup holder with your bottles and two box-and-carton combos of ChocoBOMBZ and milk. "...So you're not here to steal the TV?" Finn finally asks, after another moment.

Neon:
A second after you send your text out, you can hear Mr. Teeth's voice again. "Hey, you're uh... You're Neon? Right? You were the tough looking one from that Royce job. I don't know if you're working again right now, I just want a minute to talk, alright?" The alley is dark enough that it's hard to see, but you can tell he's taken a step forward and his friends are fanning out around him, cutting off their end of the alley.

I'll get a map up soon, but they're in the same alley as you, just approaching it from the street on the other end.

Here is a (kind of cheap-ass) map for the current setup. Count every square as 1 pace. Might need to modify it a bit. If this radically alters anybody's actions, let me know and we can change the map.

I'm botting Emily for the time being and I'm assuming Ghiv was following Kitsune as well. Feel free to move your characters around right now, if combat starts we'll lock them down a little more.

Kitsune it's early morning and the sun has risen, so no darkness penalty on the street, only in the alleys. Scales seems to be the only one following from inside the club.

The door cracks open into blinding early morning sunlight, and the Owl continues to cower behind the counter, though you can see him point towards the door as the lizard following you finally breaks free of the crowd and starts to catch up.

In the alleyway, Scales takes a few steps closer, spreading his hands in a placating gesture. "I really just wanna talk," he says. "I'm not here to give you a hard time. I think Royce did you guys a bad turn." His numerous teeth grind for a second. "Hey who's that up there? Is the gang all here?" He squints out of the darkened alley into the well-lit street as the inside team approaches the alley.

Upstairs in the common room, Finn smiles happily over his bowl of choco-bombs. "You're here on a job, aren't you?" He asks after a minute. "I like you a lot and I'm not gonna tell on you. But building inspectors check, like... Archi--, architec... Archecture, don't they?"
