Hyborian Age: Vultures of Shem

Game Master Arknight

An introductory campaign for Modiphius' Conan: Adventures In An Age Undreamed Of 2d20 RPG.

KNOW, O PRINCE, THAT BETWEEN THE YEARS WHEN THE OCEANS DRANK ATLANTIS AND THE GLEAMING CITIES, AND THE YEARS OF THE RISE OF THE SONS OF ARYAS, THERE WAS AN AGE UNDREAMED OF, WHEN SHINING KINGDOMS LAY SPREAD ACROSS THE WORLD LIKE BLUE MANTLES BENEATH THE STARS...

I backed the Conan RPG from Modiphius and feel like (since can't find a game to play) running it. :)

Would anyone be interested? I know there is a beta character program here. And I may be able to help anyone interested build a concept if they don't have the rules...

I'd be looking for 4-5 players to begin with using the adventure in the core book, and we could go from there.

Thoughts?

Liberty's Edge

Always loved the setting. Interested.

Yay for conan! I'm down.

Are you looking at randomised characters or choosing options as you go through? I read quite a few of the books when I was younger, though I've not looked at them in at least a decade...

Either way is fine with me. I know some folks enjoy the challenge random can present, while others like it planned out. What I like about the new one is that doing both at the same time is ok. :)

Dark Archive

Well, lets see how far the dice take me.
Homeland: 2d20 ⇒ (3, 18) = 21 Brythunia (Talent:Cosmopolitan; Language:Bryhunian)
Reading the description they sound like a farmfolk and traders, so I'm going to lower Willpower by 1 to raise Personality before rolling on the Attributes table (twice)
Attributes: 1d20 ⇒ 71d20 ⇒ 11 Eagle Eyed and Socially Adept, giving me: Mandatory: Awareness(+2), Coordination(+2), Awareness(+1), Personality (+3). With 'optional' bonuses applied to Personality and Agility (because screw it, it seems odd to not be from an Ancient Bloodline when your only 1 point away).
Caste: 1d20 ⇒ 12 - Merchant... fitting
Story: 1d20 ⇒ 14 - The Lash of Taxation.
Archetype: 1d20 ⇒ 19 Witch/Shaman, going to stop there for a moment while I have a think on that one (and a proper read of the Sorcery system)

Nature: 1d20 ⇒ 16 Stoic
Education: 1d20 ⇒ 1 Against your Parent's Will
War Story: 1d20 ⇒ 11 Shipwrecked

Okay, I story is starting to take shape...
Before I get too far. Is Sorcery even allowed in the campaign? If not I'll switch that out anyway (or stick with the archetype but not select the actual sorcery options - you can stick with alchemy and animal handling type skills).

Well, looking at the Hyborian Shorthand notes on page 204:

BRYTHUNIA: Medieval Germany, Poland, or Lithuania

I think farmfolk/traders, witches and Ancient Bloodlines fit quite well. :)

For Sorcery, to me it seems a bit 'dark' at its base. However, since stories are full of heroes who have touched the dark and pulled themselves back out I would be fine if you wanted to take a couple of actual spells and lean more to Alchemy, herbalism, etc.

Dark Archive

Stuck with Witch, because it feels slightly wrong to deviate from the rolls, but leaving aside sorcery for now (in part because I can only get the 'patron' talent, which bears costs for no abilities other than paving the way to 'Sorcery'). If this goes beyond a one-shot I may pursue that side, but leaving it off for now.

Alchemy needs more investment as well, but without further talents I can make any D0 petty sorcery items (which doesn't amount to much).

Physical
Age: 19;
Sigrid is one of the legendary golden-haired women of Brythunia, slight of build and lithe of form. She sands little over 5 feet in height. She tends to keep her appearance hidden as much as possible, without drawing further attention, her clothes are loose and functional and she wears a hood while travelling.

Personality
Sigrid is usually guarded, she feels as if everyone has tried to take advantage of her, and while she keeps going, she is slow to trust.

Background
Sigrid's early years were with her parents, spending time on the road, travelling city to city, dealing mostly in foodstuffs, though taking whatever was in demand. However Sigrid was wilful, with a love a books and learning and as she grew from a child she studied what she could in secret, trading in whispered promises and stolen coin, learning from an alchemist in one town, a scibe in another and an elderley medicine woman elsewhere. She picked up much from her snatches of learning, and became covetous of knowledge.
Her families trading was not to last however, Sigrid's mother died in childbirth and the the lash of taxation struck, as Brythunia sought to increase its defenses, driven to near poverty her father travelled South, eventually attempting to ply his trade on the Zaporoska river. But for all its similarity the people were different, and a punctured boat was even less forgiving than a broken wheel. Her father refused to admit defeat, even as the ship sank on the wide river. Sigrid has since been forced to live by her wits, scaring off raiders with simple tricks learned during her youth. Until she arrives in...

That'll teach me to cut and paste without looking at it right before I run off to dinner.

My character's basic backstory is that he is a member of an aquilonian noble house (probably 2nd or 3rd son) who had the stupidity to fall in love with a Stygian woman. His parents managed to break things up, but he was sent to his family's estates in the middle of nowhere, and when he came of age he joined the legions.

15 minutes into what would become known as the Battle of Forlorn Hope, he became the highest ranking officer after Picts overran the command tent and slaughtered everyone inside.

Rallying the men, he set a series of brush fires to split up his enemy and then used the entirety of his 20 man force to pick the Picts off piecemeal.

When reinforcements finally arrived, a ragtag band of veterans were remaining.

For his part, however, watching his friends die because (as he later found out) the local governor had been undersupplying and undermanning the legion to line his own pockets, lead to him resigning his commission and becoming a mercenary.

The problem he has found is that at 22 he is considered way too young to lead an army, so he is travelling to gain experience that will allow him to lead an army.

For thought on background of how things start:

Vultures of Shem:
Vultures spiral above the battlefield. Blood soaks into
the rocky ground from hundreds of dying men and their
horses, a grim reminder from the desperate hours prior.

For those who fought and died, the battle was as
purposeless as any. Prince Satabus of Khoraja was
tricked into bringing an army to aid King Ulam-Khala
of Akbitana in a war against his cousin, King Nezurab
of Shumir, another of Shem’s eastern city-states. So
confident of the outcome was Satabus that he brought
with him his bride-to-be, a Stygian noblewoman named
Neferet, along with her closest handmaiden. With them
also was a small delegation -- envoys and court officials.
They bore princely gifts to cement the deep and everlasting
friendship between Khoraja and Akbitana: a chest
containing fistfuls of gems; urns of precious oil; bolts of
Turanian and Khitan silks and other fine cloth; ingots
of precious metal; and measures of rare and fragrant
wood... a sumptuous collection of finery befitting a
royal visit.

The battle was over before it could even begin. In
the days prior to Satabus’ arrival, Ulam-Khala and
Nezurab had made peace with one another, messages
traveling via messenger bird. The two Shemitish kings
agreed to unite and destroy Satabus’ army as a show
of solidarity, an act of betrayal that would serve to
weaken Khorajan resolve against further incursions
into Shem.

Seeing that that the day was lost, Satabus sounded
the order to flee, and as horns echoed across the desert,
his mercenary army scattered across the dry plains and
into the nearby foothills and hard-baked gulleys. They
were pursued by the asshuri, picked off one-by-one.
Satabus and his cadre of knights fought valiantly to
protect his beloved Neferet, but the caravan with her
litter was cut off in the retreat. Their fates are unknown.

Each of you was part of Satabus’ army, either as soldiers,
knights, or as part of the envoy. You’re here now.
Somehow, the last wave of asshuri and footmen missed
you. Everyone else is dead. What role did you play in the
battle, and what are you doing now?

Dark Archive

Okay, given the introduction there... Sigrid doesn't really pass for a soldier on any level. So.

Sigrid could be part of the Envoy, rewriting the end of her background, so she wasn't destitute after her father's untimely death and shipwreck.to maintain the mercantile business and trying to make a show of things with her best wares (perhaps in silks?) to secure a contract with Satabus?

The other alternative, is to have her as somewhat of a camp-follower, plying her skill with medicine and her charm among the soldiers while she plots a way to restore her fortunes.

Either would work. She could also have conned her way into the Envoy with the intent of getting close to the princess as a way to look for opportunities for that restoration.

Don't have the rules but I love Conan.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

My character, who's name will be Quintus Valens Assante, will have been a mercenary hired to lead a small company of other mercenaries. During the battle, he called for an ordered retreat, but most of his men broke and ran. He led the remainder into a nearby valley, where they hid out and waited...they were found by several Asshuri, but managed to kill them. He lost all of his men in the process, however. Without supplies and fearing disease, he left the cave with the days of food he had left in search of water. and that is where he will encounter the group.

Sounds good to me. :)

@Storyteller Shadow: let me know the type of character you want and we can work it out. :)

In Mongoose Publishings' Second Edition book there was a Noble class, the equivalent would be interesting to play I think!

Based on the spoiler, I would have been part of the Envoy.

That's doable. :)

Any kind of background have in mind? Where from? How grew up?

Higher physical or mental attributes?

I am thinking he was a Nobleman from Koth who had a falling out with his father and now travels as a professional emissary. Higher Mental stats.

Ok, let me see what I can come up with for you. :)

Backstory:

Krieg was little over 9 years old when he took his coming-of-age trials, competing with boys 6-7 years older than he. His father, the Master Fletcher of his tribe, had put a bow in his hand as soon as he was able to walk. By age 5, he could put an arrow between two moving rings of steel. By age 7 he had already broken his mount, A black stallion by the name of Swift who seemed to be made for Krieg.

During the trials, it is not uncommon for permanent injury to occur. The boys are given training weapons, and they are each told to bring back the best game they can find. Those who could bring back enough food to feed the tribe would be granted the title of Domi (or warrior-hunter). Those who could not were given 2 more chances to succeed, and should they fail the 3rd time they would be exiled from the tribe with a knife and a waterskin.

When the first boy came for him, he was ready. He had cut and shaved a willow-bark switch and as the boy approached him, he snapped it into the eye of his horse. To the beast's credit, it did not topple over, but it did stop moving and flung it's rider from the saddle.

So it went for each other boy who would test Krieg: They found themselves unhorsed and swearing his name profusely. Krieg shot a pair of bucks and made a travoy to carry the meat, then shot the mated wolves who came tracking his kill.

Now his tribe would eat well.

When Krieg neared the tent city where his tribe had camped for the trials, he was greeted by the boys who he had bested. Though he fought bravely, he was eventually unhorsed and beaten. It would have been worse, but Swift intervened and crushed one of the other boy's heads. Content to take his spoils as their own, they returned to the village and were given the title of Domi. Knowing that he would shame his father should he return empty handed, Krieg rode into the night collecting game. When he returned at first light, he had killed a mighty beast: An elephant. The boys who had attacked him seethed, but said nothing. This would be the start of the feud that lasted for several years, culminating with open war between himself and the seven other hunters, who attacked him from ambush.

They were, however, not ready for him as an enemy.

Hanging from the side of Swift, he fired arrows that killed the first two men before they could reach him. Wheeling his horse, he rolled from the saddle and stabbed the next man who charged him with his spear. Leaving it in the fool's chest, he drew his bow and whistled for Swift. Two more he killed when they attempted to attack him from both sides, as when they were flanking him with all three horses galloping, he made Swift slam to a halt, which flung him from the saddle. He used the momentum to plunge his blade into the first man's spine, then drew his bow and fired a pair of arrows into the other man. The last three he picked off as they were fleeing. A single arrow for each and down they went. He collected what coin and arrows they had, plus his dropped weapons, and left his tribe.

At the time, his people had roamed into Shemitish lands, and the first lord he met offered him a job as a messenger. That lord was Prince Satabus.

Krieg worked tirelessly to bring word to all of the Prince's lords of the war to come. Several times, he was forced to defend himself on the road, but was usually left alone after he killed one or two attackers with well-placed arrows.

Once the army had gathered, Krieg was placed with the scouts and promised a share of the spoils from the battle.

Things went disasterously from the start. As his scouting unit crested a hill, they met an enemy scouting unit doing the same. A battle ensued, and it was fairly evenly matched until the sorcerer began casting some sort of spell. Krieg pumped half a quiver of arrows into him, but the wizard had spells to protect himself. Given no other option (and the fact that there were almost no remaining scouts on his side) he called the retreat and quit the battle.

As he fled, a mist began to billow from the hill, and inside the mist, something moved. Krieg rode like the wind, and Swift lived up to his name. They stayed ahead of the mist and whatever was within it. Given the screams he heard as he rode, it was nothing good. Finally, the mist receded, and an abattoir lay behind him. He rode hard to the command tent, but the battle was already in disarray by the time he had arrived. Taking a spare quiver of arrows, he quit the field, as his father had taught him that a mage was a dangerous enemy who could not be trusted. As he is leaving, he encountered a rag-tag band of survivors, also fleeing the treacherous battle...

Dark Archive

1 person marked this as a favorite.

For reference the basic system is you roll 2d20 and each result under your
Skill Expertise (+attribute) gives you one success, if the dice is under the 'Focus' value (not added to attribute) it counts for 2. Up to 3 bonus d20s can be added by various abilities/effects and the difficulties range from D0 (0 successes to pass) to D5 (5 successes required). Successes over the number required give you momentum which you can spend for additional effects (such as bonus damage), and you can store up for later (which goes into a party-wide pool, maximum 6).

e.g. Sigrid tries to seduce the guard, the GM decides that he's not particularly loyal so is only D1, her Persuade expertise & focus is 3, plus her 12 Personality Persuade(15E/3F): 1d20 ⇒ 191d20 ⇒ 4, so it's pass, and if I'd rolled 1 less I would have had 2 successes and could have either saved or spent a momentum.

The online character creation tool posted up earlier is quite good, and you can get a fair idea of what you can do without knowing the mechanics behind it. I created mine manually then used the tool to "check my work". One thing that is worth noting is that each skill has a talent tree, when creating a character you may only see the initial option, but most skills have one initial option, then 2-3 branches to go down.

Only thing I'm not sure about is that it seems to have given me Alchemist and Healer's kits... can't find anywhere in the book that tells me I should have them, though I might have missed it.

Dark Archive

There is also a free Quickstart available (on drivethru and presumably other places) One of the pre-gen's in there is a 'Curious noble', so you may be able to just file off the serial numbers if you prefer, and it gives you the basics of the rules in more detail.

Liberty's Edge

Very cool sounding...will have to read the rules and see what it is like, but I might just throw a character up here as well...found a character generator program I might give a whirl!!

Liberty's Edge

I am sorry to bow out, but I feel hard pressed to learn the new system now.
I hope you have a great game!

Liberty's Edge

Ok, here is the crunch for my submission...hope I did it right. Changed it as my first attempt came out to being way too much like Vrog's submission.

I like what I'm seeing so far. :) I also appreciate the helpfulness about the rules, etc. I know the game is relatively new, and this is my first experience with 2d20 so I expect things will get missed, ruled wrongly, etc. Please let me know is you feel I'm doing something of the above, and we can work it out. :)

As far as cast, we have lined up at the moment:

spinningdice - Sigrid of Brythunia, Witch
Vrog Skyreaver - Domi Kreisler, Hyrkanian Archer
aptinuviel - TBD
corsario - Withdrawn, (but more than welcome to stay since it is new to all of us. :) )
Hyregoth - Ahmargane of Khoraja, Scoundrel (needs some background)
Daniel Stewart - XXX, Cimmerian Mercenary (needs some background)

A nice bunch. :)

One other thing I would like to know. Who would be the Actor/Actress playing your character if this was a TV series on Netflix or Starz?

I would have my character played by Aiden Gillen :-)

Awesome, thanks DM! As I don't know the rules I will go with your recommendations. I will have am Avatar up in the next day or so! I am recruiting for a new high level game so between that and running active games I have been busy while on the boards this week. Feel free to check out that Recruitment if interested DM. (And of course any players here as well).

Vampires of Golarion - The Quest for Eternal Night a Second Darkness AP

Oddly enough, my first pick would be Jason Momoa. or Daniel Wu.

Dark Archive

I tend to blank on actors/actresses unless they're really big names (plus my tv watching has steadily declined over the years, so many picks are probably too old). So let me think...

Emilia Clarke is an obvious pick, since everyone else is going with GoT actors and the character is a little similar in feel in some ways.

Hmm, trying to get a bit more local to the eastern Europe inspired-region is Mila Jovovich over-budget for Netflix/Starz? preferably in 5th element or Joan of Arc mode.

I did finally notice the sidebar about being able to swap out other talents for Sorcery at DM Permission, but I think I'll leave it alone for now, the system for actual magic looks relatively complex for a game I've not played before, plus real-magic seems ultimately self-destructive. Want to try and delve into Alchemy talents a bit further at the first opportunity and will then decide in-game where to go from there.

Going to have a second run through on the background and create an Avatar.

Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson

Background for: Ahmargane

Working among the stalls along the steep incline of the great escarpment was no picnic but what choice did he have. It's the only life he ever knew. His father (whomever he was and trice be damned) a slaver out of Kush purchased his mother in Shem and immediately impregnated her. Becoming too sick to travel on the road south, he decided to dump her off with the peasants of Shamla pass.

'Amar' grew up despising the rich caravans but also being intrigued by them. to what exotic locations had they gone, what exciting sites did they see... So, Amar did odd jobs for these caravans...tending the animals, running messages, finding things but always asking lots of questions. As he grew older, he became an enforcer for local shop keepers, pimps and drink sellers. He was also not above a little petty thievery now and then.

Then one day, the kings messengers came...a large company on horse from the north. Before Amar knew, they were rounding up all the boys and young men to go off and fight. Amar was assigned as a message runner for the captain and put in charge of collecting the names and skills of the men pressed into service.

Before they knew it, the battle was over. Amar was on his way to find out what was happening and bringing the answer of 'Treachery' to his captain when all he found was death. Spending the next few days hiding and scavenging the battlefield, Amar collected what he could and started heading toward the nearest friendly town. He moved at night, hoping to avoid the enemy patrols. How much good loot did he have to leave behind...how many of his friends dead...what a waste...

Well keeping with the GoT theme, I would have to pick Hafþór Júlíus Björnsson. Otherwise I would got with my favorite Icelandic strongman, Magnús Ver Magnússon.

Will work on profile and background today.

Here is my submission for this game with avatar. The background is at the bottom of the character sheet...hope it is ok.

Here is Vrog's alt.

Thanks, I am glad you have plenty of characters anyhow.

Storyteller Shadow Avatar.

Slight change of name to what was available of the site, but here is Signey of Brythunia.

All looks good. :)

I plan on getting things rolling tomorrow. I would have done it today, but have been traveling since Thursday, and haven't had proper time to review.

Also, am planning on setting up an Obsidian Portal site to keep notes, sheets, etc. if anyone has any suggestions on what to include.

Doing a review and finding a couple of issues. :)

Domi Kreig: Ranged Weapons and Animal Handling are both 5. You can only have one skill at 5 in the beginning. You can make whichever one a 4 and move the other rank to a skill for the same attribute.

Kern ap Cul: I'm guessing the Axe, spear and the sling are your weapons?

Others: If you could specify any weapons/choices that would be helpful.

One thing to note though, most of the gear you have listed, you won't have at the start as you're picking up the pieces from the battle. My first thought is that other than what you will find looting, you'll only have one weapon and one armor piece to start. Other minor things you would still have or find easily....

I also have the bare beginnings of information up at Obsidian Portal: Chronicles of the Hyborian Age

Thoughts?

Its likely that Amalrus would wear Leather if he wore any armor. He might wield a dagger or a short sword but as he has little interest in battle himself it would be out of necessity only.

I will keep the axe and forgo the rest. I will get weapon and armor stats up on my alias.

I'm fine with only having one weapon, but if'n I do, it will be a bow. Krieg is an archer primarily. I assume that I also have my horse, since it's my bonded companion?

Ahmargane's Choices:

Brigadine Jacket
Round Shield
Broadsword

I've switched up my gear in my profile, keeping what seemed likely to be worn when the attack happened, if you want me to lose the gold and jewellery that's fine too.

Equipment: 12gp
A Broad, Sharp Dagger
A simple undyed cloth dress
Rough Hammered Jewellery
A Toughened Leather Jacket (Armor 1: Torso/Arms)

Can I switch my outfit to a 'a once-fine dress, now ragged and bloody?' since I think it fits the character more than simple undyed cloth... which I generated originally.

Liberty's Edge

Ok, I bought the .pdf and see some places where I made some big errors..lol. If possible I will keep my main idea, but now that I have a better grip on the skills and abilities and how they interact, would it be ok to switch some of these around a little?? Can have it up quickly as I am working on it right now.
thanks
