Inspired by visions of John Carpenter's the Thing, Akira Kurosawa's Dreams and his masterpiece Ran. And maybe a little of Throne of Blood and some good ol' fashioned Toshiro Mifune neck scratchin'. Now with Ninjas and Vikings and Bears, oh my!
Well should I even do this then? I could sneak into the camp to look around if it is as dead as you say. I'm trained and small. Don't get me wrong, I'm ready to do my part but I don't want to go through all this to discover the encampment empty, know what I mean?
"I wasn't too keen on that plan anyway. Too much risk, and the deception. Would've been a great sight to see, don't get me wrong. But if there's already been some damage, might not even be any goblins left. I'd say we just march on in and check it out at this point."
Joyabraund cocks an eyebrow at the paladin, Deception is always a problem for you holy types I hear. Well, we might have to work on that. After all, would Sarenrae take away the noble arts of acting or the social intrigue of bluffing at games? Deception is often no more than tactics with wit rather than swords. Hopefully I can teach you some of its virtues in our time together! All the same...I think you might be right this time, as fun as running around as a goblin might be if the door is already open, why not accept their invitation?
"I have nothing against acting, and though I cannot speak for the entire clergy, I'm sure they would agree for the most part. My sword instructor wasn't exactly prone to what he would call 'frivilous time wasters', but he was in the minority. I would enjoy continuing this discussion though, but it might be best to do so after dealing with our friends first."
"Wait now, let's not be too hasty to drop down our guard. Goblins are nocturnal creatures, aren't they? Maybe most of the tribe is sleeping right now, or the guards were hidden from my view? If you two are in favor of dropping our little subterfuge, that's fine, but we still need to proceed with caution. Joyabraund, if you're training in sneaking around, how about the two of us scout ahead of the rest of the group?
I can retrace my earlier steps, and I'm confident I wouldn't be detected this time either."
Broderus looks at Treygan's holy symbol, "I know I don't have to even ask you, and Valcrim, you've been complaining about the racket your armor makes since we left Sandpoint. Seiji, how about you? Any training in stealth?"
Yamamoto Seiji(Male Human (Tian-Min) Alchemist (Preservationist) 1)
"No more than most men, but my armor makes little enough noise. I will follow you with careful steps if you think that the best approach."
Valcrim muses "If gobbos be sleepin' during tha day, an' they be daft 'nuff ta nae place guards, I say we do this tha simple way: Find an approach, move in fast, an' take tha buggers while they be sleepin'."
He looks to Treygan and Joyabraund "Deception be well an' good, but nae somethin' I be wishin' ta place lives on. Good tactics often take advantage o' 'dirty' methods. Like takin' on tha enemy while asleep. An' any god o' tha long-lived races know that ye cherish yer lives more than ideals, so Torag be fine with deception, even if he be preferrin' solid an' predictable fights won with strength an' teamwork." he chuckles "Which be easier ta implement fer hot-headed warrior types that 'ave no head fer trickery." he looks to Treygan and Broderus "No offense, lads. Just speakin' in general terms."
Trained in stealth? My people are the very essence of the word. Built for it too! Tiny? Unassuming? Halfling's are hiders and skulkers of the first sort. But I only use my powers for good, so your purses and treasure sacks are safe with me!
Joyabraund will pull his shield and sword and salute at Valcrim. Then let us not delay! Onward sir dwarf!
If Joyabraund and I decide to scout ahead of everyone else, here's a Stealth check as well as a Perception check to check for the presence of any goblins in the fortress.
Valcrim tries to keep it down as well, favoring the crossbow so his shield is not bumping into everything, and asking Torag for guidance on this nigh impossible task :P
Though Valcrim is awfully pleased with himself, and Treygan stows his shield their attempts to pass unnoticed on this plane were not to be.
Please indicate on the Licktoad Compound Map where your Kennedy will be crashing through the palisades so that I can murder you on sight, I mean, run the combat!
Looks like I-2 is the most logical entry point outside of wading through water in armor! If possible, I attempt to move to the door at F-3 and enter that structure; it's a much more defensible choke point than being out in the open like this...
Broderus gulps down hard. If this be our final battle, Erastil guide our arms and let us fight bravely in our last hour.
"Men, how about we head for that building there?! It's much more defensible than being sitting ducks out here!"
Yamamoto Seiji(Male Human (Tian-Min) Alchemist (Preservationist) 1)
Seiji will move to H1 in an attempt to provide cover for Broderus and all others moving through the gate and into the building.
Valcrim readies his shield and stands steadfast at I-3, intent on drawing fire so others can take cover behind him and dart towards the door if wanted. AC21 flatfooted.
"Bring it, ye little shytes! I piss on ye, and I like dogs!" he taunts, trying to make them angry at him.
Those of you with quick senses can see a goblin peering out from the frame of the watchtower directly in front of the gate, and he knocks an arrow in his shortbow and attacks closest target in defense of his home! The projectile crashes against Valcrim's mighty half-plate, breaks and falls uselessly to the ground before his boots.
Goblin Shortbow Attack vs. Valcrim's AC 21 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (8) + 4 = 12 if he hits he will deal 1d4 ⇒ 2 damage
Round One
Goblin:
"Hu-MANS! MEAT! FOR MEATSES!"
Cursing loudly in Goblin, the first sentry raises an alarm, then knocks another arrow and lets loose. Two more sentries appear at the remaining watch towers and do the same! Not to be deterred by your show of force at their ruined gate, they spread their fire among you!
Goblin Sentry 01 Attack vs. Valcrim's AC 21 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (11) + 4 = 15 if he hits he will deal 1d4 ⇒ 1 damage.
Goblin Sentry 02 Attack vs. Broderus's AC 16 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (9) + 4 = 13 if he hits he will deal 1d4 ⇒ 1 damage.
Goblin Sentry O3 Attack vs. Treygan's AC 18 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (16) + 4 = 20 if he hits he will deal 1d4 ⇒ 4 damage.
Several arrows hiss in the air. Those loosed at Valcrim and Broderus fail to find purchase, but the shrewd goblin who trained his sights on the brilliant Treygan hit true.
"Duck! We're taking fire!" Broderus follows his own advice and stoops down in the nick of time as an arrow flies over his head! Pointing to his right, he yells, "I'll take that sentry over there. Cover me Seiji!"
I'm taking two move actions to intercept the sentry at C-7 . If my calculations are correct, I should end up at B-7 at the end of my turn (assuming the adjoining door is not locked).
Yamamoto Seiji(Male Human (Tian-Min) Alchemist (Preservationist) 1)
"I shall. Move quickly!" Seiji places his back against the palisade and leans in, loosing a bolt at one of the goblins.
Seiji is attacking the goblin in K7, cover and all.
Attack (Crossbow) - 1d20 - 2 ⇒ (15) - 2 = 13
If it hits, it deals 1d8 ⇒ 2 points of damage
Joyabraund loquaciously expounds upon the glories of fabled halfling archers as the group is being pelted with goblin arrows, and his human and dwarven allies do not care in the least that he is the only halfling among them, his delivery is so passionate.
All allies within 30' of Joyabraund gain the affects of Inspire Courage, +1 competence bonus to attacks, damage and +1 morale bonus against charm and fear effects
Perception 20:
Instead of rolling for each individual goblin in this encounter, I will be taking 10 as an average of what these guys can do as a whole. And you're far enough away for the DC to actually be greater than this, so... hopefully it will work out
If you are looking carefully enough, you can see movement in the windows of the smashed up huts around you, and occasionally, a soft snicker or scrape of feets or shifting of crude floorboards. You cannot be sure, but you estimate that there is a sizable force of goblins lying in "wait" for you.
I will let Valcrim post and you guys make your perceptions before I continue with the order. As an aside, scheduled power outage in my area tomorrow morning till early afternoon, so I will not be posting until the evening.
Ah yes in the windows! And the room! Look alive friends! As the great Weyan of the Appletops said "Seeing the foe is the first step to smacking them aside their head!"
Broderus, my calculations of a 20' movement put you at C6, in front of the ladder up to the walkway, and the door at B7 is closed. No climb check is necessary, it is a 5' movement to climb the ladder, and opening the door will be another move action, unfortunately. But goblins are not known for their intelligence.
Round One Summary
Having been attacked at ranged by well prepared goblins, the group dashes about attempting to negate their advantage. Or would that be to negate their own advantages? Despite Joyabraund's inspiration, and Torag's blessings Yamamoto Seiji's attempt to fell one of the creatures fails, his bolt bouncing off the protection afforded by the watchtower. Joyabraund and Father Flinthammer recognize that the sentries are only the first of the offenders in this place, and the situation is like to get far more difficult.
Round Two
The goblin sentries give a cheer, or some manner of gutteral verbal response as your team thins itself out.
Goblin Sentry 01 shortbow vs. Broderus AC 19 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (11) + 4 = 15 if he hits he will deal 1d4 ⇒ 2 damage
Goblin Sentry 02 shortbow vs. Treygan Gorski AC 18 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (12) + 4 = 16 if he hits he will deal 1d4 ⇒ 2 damage
Goblin Sentry 03 shortbow vs. Valcrim Flinthammer AC 22 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (7) + 4 = 11 if he hits he will deal 1d4 ⇒ 4 damage
The goblin sentries loose their arrows, and there is almost a collective curse of shame from them as they all miss their intended targets. Bows are heard clanging to the ground, and those close enough can see that their favored Dog Slicers are equipped to dispatch their foes with great ferocity!
Hu5tru, thanks for catching my mistake there! That's what I get for posting after midnight following a 10 hour work shift!
For Round Two, Broderus continues his pursuit of the goblin sentry raining arrows down on him.
I use two move actions to reach point B-7 and open said door.
Focusing on the enemy at hand, Broderus takes one final peek over his shoulder to check on his teammates. Damn, Treygan's been hit. Seiji, may your aim be true; we need to start returning some fire on these cretins!
Yamamoto Seiji(Male Human (Tian-Min) Alchemist (Preservationist) 1)
Are any of the goblins with melee weapons out in the open at this point?
Out of instinct Joyabraund follow Broderus, bounding through the open space to get as close to the ranger as quickly as he can. (Double move to I think e5?)
His attack finds no purchase, and his eyes narrow in his plate helmet "Ye got lucky... but luck ain't gonna save yer smelly hide." he promises over his shield.
As Joyabraund moves with his long time companion, the door to the hut behind him bursts open, and from it swells two particularly nasty goblins! Simultaneously, several more burst and scarred doors open and emit more goblins to whoops and cheers consisting, for those of you who know the language of various impassioned cries for meat and generally nasty suggestions and images.
Fortunately for Joyabraund, the goblin that has approached him, though furious and horrible, is no more offensive than his foul odor and breath.
Father Flinthammer and Treygan, however, face far more challenging odds!
Gobbo 02 Dogslicer Attack vs. Valcrim Flinthammer AC 22 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (14) + 2 = 16 if it hits, he will deal 1d4 ⇒ 4 damage
Gobbo 03 Dogslicer Attack vs. Valcrim Flinthammer AC 22 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (15) + 2 = 17 if it hits, he will deal 1d4 ⇒ 3 damage
Gobbo 05 Dogslicer Attack vs. Treyjan Gorski AC 18 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (15) + 2 = 17 if it hits, he will deal 1d4 ⇒ 2 damage
Gobbo 06 Dogslicer Attack vs. Treyjan Gorski AC 18 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (19) + 2 = 21 if it hits, he will deal 1d4 ⇒ 2 damage roll to confirm critical 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (2) + 2 = 4
While the blows simply make impact sounds against Father Flinthammer's well crafted half-plate, one of the pair of goblins attacking Treygan lands an exceptionally well placed blow, damaging the young knight further. The creature squeals with glee in goblin and calls dibs on his shiny plate!
The goblin sentries continued to pelt the heroes with arrows from above, scattering each to the winds in their pursuit of... life. Joyabraund Northropple and Father Flinthammer, whose eyes never seem to fail the group, recognized the ambush and sure as fate would have, the foul goblinoid monsters delivered, swarming its heavy and armored champions. Yamamoto Seiji deftly dashes passed the sludge of the murky pool that services the Licktoad compound and immediately fells the foe threatening Joyabraund. Treygan, enraged by yet another hit upon his holy person, swings his lady's scimitar and cuts through both goblins as though they were practice dummies on the range, and they drop like bags of grain before his holy might.
Round Three!
Goblin Sentry Dogslicer vs. Broderus AC 19 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (11) + 2 = 13 if he hits he will deal 1d4 ⇒ 3 damage
Goblin Sentry Dogslicer vs. Treygan Gorski AC 18, +1 for higher ground 1d20 + 2 + 1 ⇒ (14) + 2 + 1 = 17 if he hits he will deal 1d4 ⇒ 3 damage.
Goblin Sentry Shortbow vs. Yamamoto Seiji AC 14 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (17) + 4 = 21 if he hits he will deal 1d4 ⇒ 3 damage.
Two goblin sentries take the offensive against Broderus and Treygan, baring discolored and sometimes rotten teeth and crying out foul curses as they slash ineffectually with their dog slicers at the men. The goblin unlucky enough to face Treygan gives a gasp of surprise and his eyes show genuine fear as he takes a 5-foot step back into the hut.
The furthest sentry, finding no advantage in dropping his bow in favor of engaging in melee fires a round at Yamamoto Seiji, who clearly just murdered his brother, and his strike finds purchase. An arrow blossoms in Seiji's thigh, almost to ensure that the impressive moves he displayed will not be repeated...
I'm factoring ranger's focus and the bless spell into my rolls.
Yamamoto Seiji(Male Human (Tian-Min) Alchemist (Preservationist) 1)
Seiji winces in pain at the arrow in his leg, but ignores is for the time being. With a single stride, he moves against the nearest structure and slides a new bolt into his crossbow, his eyes fixed on the two goblins threatening Valcrim. He pulls back the winch, steadies his hands, and fires.
Seiji is taking a 5-Foot Step to K6, and then spending a move action to reload his crossbow. He then shoots at the goblin in H4, who should not have cover from the attack. I'll try to remember Bless this time...
Attack - 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (18) + 5 = 23 If it hits, it deals 1d8 + 2 ⇒ (1) + 2 = 3 points of damage.
The wounds Treygan suffers gives him pause, but only for a moment. These creatures will show no mercy, and he cannot give none in return. This he knows. A quick glance back, the two goblins are easily handled, but the archer ahead poses a problem. Treygan moves forward, muttering "Sarenrae protect us and give me strength", keeping his shield up, and strikes at the creature.
Dice and Actions:
Treygan moves to K7, and Defensively attack L8, no Power Attack Attack:
Round 2 ret-con:
Valcrim sees that Treygan is in trouble, and trudges down to J-7, trusting his armor to ward off the feeble goblin strikes. As he arrives, he lets his hammer dangle off his weapon cord and casts Protection from Evil on the paladin. Then retrieves his hammer as a swift action.
Round 3:
Ready attack if gobbos pursue. +5 to hit, 1d8+3 damage if hit.
Goblin 02 Dogslicer AoO vs. Valcrim AC 22 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (3) + 2 = 5 if it hits he will deal 1d4 ⇒ 3 damage
Goblin 03 Dogslicer AoO vs. Valcrim AC 22 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (15) + 2 = 17 if it hits he will deal 1d4 ⇒ 4 damage
Treygan:
With Valcrim's retconn you have 2 greater AC, so you can nulify that last hit to your paladin.
Round 3, Continued
The goblins that were ignored by Valcrim curse and branch out to attack a potentially more satisfying target, Joyabraund!
Goblin 02 Dogslicer Attack vs. Joyabraund AC 18 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (11) + 2 = 13 if he hits he will deal 1d4 ⇒ 4 damage
Goblin 07 Dogslicer Attack vs. Joyabraund AC 18 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (18) + 2 = 20 if he hits he will deal 1d4 ⇒ 1 damage
A fresh goblin opens the door to the watch tower and stands menacingly in front of Broderus, only at the last moment recognizing that his comrades have gone off in search of more tasty prey and he is staring down the bloodied mace of an adventurer with no move actions to speak of.
Finally, two goblins and his broodmate use the advantage created by their position atop the walkways to try to best the half-plated Father Flinthammer
Goblin 08 Dogslicer Attack w/higher ground vs. Valcrim Flinthammer AC 22 1d20 + 2 + 1 ⇒ (14) + 2 + 1 = 17 if he hits he will deal 1d4 ⇒ 1 damage
Goblin 06 Dogslicer Attack w/higher ground vs. Valcrim Flinthammer AC 22 1d20 + 2 + 1 ⇒ (3) + 2 + 1 = 6 if he hits he will deal 1d4 ⇒ 4 damage
So, Valcrim still has an attack, and I'll sort out everyone's actions in a summary when we get to it... maybe I should start moving and rolling the goblins attacks all in one huge post instead of spacing it out because only Joyabraund goes between them...
At the beginning of the round, the lone stationary sentry's arrow pierces Yamamoto Seiji's leg. Several moments after, the dastardly raiders fan out and attack your scattered group, unfortunately surrounding and landing a hit on your beleaguered bard, Joyabraund Northropple. Several more attempt to tackle the one dwarf killing machine Father Flinthammer, but their blows are repelled by his amazing armor and faith in Torag. Broderus, Treygan and Father Flinthammer have great success in melee thinning the goblin horde that throws themselves upon you.
Round 4
Running all the goblins attacks save for those on Joyabraund, as he can let me know what he would do to combat the threat about him
Goblin Sentry Dogslicer vs. Treygan Gorski AC 20 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (1) + 2 = 3 if he hits, he will deal 1d4 ⇒ 2
Goblin Sentry Shortbow vs. Valcrim Flinthammer AC 22 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (17) + 4 = 21 if he hits, he will deal 1d4 ⇒ 2 damage.
Goblin 06 Acrobatics vs Valcrim Flinthammer CMD 13 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (10) + 2 = 12 Failed for AoO
If he does not die from the AoO he drew...
Goblin 06 Dogslicer w/flank vs. Valcrim Flinthammer AC 22 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (17) + 4 = 21 if he hits, he will deal 1d4 ⇒ 1 damage.
Goblin 08 Dogslicer w/ higher ground vs. Valcrim Flinthammer AC 22 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (15) + 4 = 19 if he hits, he will deal 1d4 ⇒ 3 damage.
Goblin 07 Dogslicer vs. Broderus AC 19 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (6) + 2 = 8 if he hits he will deal 1d4 ⇒ 4 damage
Goblins slash at you, but no attacks find purchase. A particularly brave goblin tumbles through Father Flinthammer's legs, but finds himself caught, staring down the stern visage of a dwarf who hates goblins...
