Gilmork continues to follow the tracks with a little shiver running up his spine as he does so.

All my life I've lived close to nature... This place is eerie beyond compare.

This sure is a place with a vibe. I've seen battlescenes spent nights camping in forests, but this scene is a new one.

The superstitious gestures of Payden and the Regulators amused Hecktor though, he hadn't thought the cruel mercs to be like that.

Encounter Map

The trails through the Cold Marrow is easy to follow but the scene is just as bad for the next several miles. Eventually you reach something...

On the side of a giant hill stands a mound
of earth and clay. Symbols of unknown origin
encrust its entire exterior, although most are
eroded by time’s careless caress. Ascending the
mound is a series of broken stairs framed by
two giant menhirs of white marble. At the base
of these stairs two enormous stone disks, each
the size of a giant’s wagon wheel, rest one atop
the other, their edges overlapping slightly. The
disks are carved with thousands of runes in
wild patterns that defy reason.

Linguistics DC20:
The writing is Azlanti, and very old.

Kn:History DC 20:
These ancient disks of power were once
a great calendar marking the ages for the Azlanti seers and sages. Its power is stilled now, and it no longer marks the passage of the eons. The date the calendar ceased to function is the date marking Aroden’s death and the beginning of the Age of Lost Omen.

If you search the disks Perception DC 20:
The disks bear several shallow depressions where jewels once rested, but thieves and scavengers have long since pried them free. One gem remains, it has a brightness about it that seems unnatural.

The knowledge check might be important. I'll use the 1/day loremaster ability and take 20 on it.

Silas examines the disks and ever so slightly excited he laughs and tells the party, "Wow. I read about ancient Azlanti Calendar disks years ago in one of those interminable history lessons my tutors thought important, never thought I'd actually see one. The Azlanti made things to last, these were apparently working as recently as the death of Aroden. OK that was a long time ago by our standards but Azlanti were ancient even then. Come to think of it the timing of that is slightly ominous..."

Silas shares a meaningful glance with Lucanor.

"You're rgiht Silas. I've seen images of these stones before when I was little. The elves had some knowledge about those as well, though I've never been able to read Azlanti."

Gilmork states as he bows over the disks as well, looking over Silas's shoulder.

"Slightly ominous? I would think so indeed, perhaps this would be a good time to tell Jaxom about what we've found before and how this relates to it."

I've forgot where we found Azlanti scripture before, was it at a time when Gilmork was around?

The undead attack before you joined was due to a disturbed Azlanti grave mound. There was an evil Azlanti dagger from the crown of the kobold king. The lesser seal of tar baphon is of a similar age to the destruction of this calendar. Drazmorg the one we suspect of being the cold dark one was one of tar baphon's apprentices. He was active behind the scenes influencing the kobolds. He may be active here and now too

Jaxom did not like this place. Even the earth felt wrong here. Azlanti? He had know knowledge of these people. The heroes talked of their great age and power, but where were they now? Gone unto the dust. Cursed unless he misread the earth's groans. Yet, the fey were by far older. The Eldest were amongst the fey. Their power and wisdom were unchanged by time.

The young man's reverie was interrupted by Silas' question. Jaxom jerks and looks slightly guilty.

"Yes, of course, good hero. I will look at it."

Any rolls needed to remove it without damage?

Silas ponders and suggests, "It may be wiser to venture in tomorrow morning when we are refreshed. Right now we should secure the perimeter and check if the tracks lead inside or not."

Besides I plan to make sure the Mercs sleep poorly tonight. The odd strange noise in the night will rob them of sleep and drive a wedge between them and Payden.

Silas surreptitiously tells the others of this plan when the opportunity provided itself.

Male Human (Chelaxian ethnicity) Inquisitor-8 (Current HP 53/61)

"We definitely need watches then...." Lucanor says. He doesn't trust 'Payday' at all and wouldn't doubt the man would kill them in their sleep.

As Silas suggested, he'll look at the tracks and see if he can tell if they're coming in or out.

I'll post more later but I think we should have a good old campfire. Both for practical reasons, and because Silas wants to tell a Ghost story ;) Yes I probably am tempting fate. Anyway the Mercs are *not* going to sleep well tonight. Be it kobolds, undead or Silas, or some combination!

Silas calls a conference and suggests, "We'd better assume the worst about these ruins. Since there's a lot of us, I suggest double guard duty and lets set up camp a ways from the mound entrance. Lets put some torches around the camp perimeter too. If there's undead they know we're here so we might as well scare off wild animals and have us some light. Speaking of which, there was loads of deadfall back at the tree line. So I suggest we make ourselves a nice big bonfire. No need to be cold tonight eh? Besides I'm pretty sure I saw Gilmork catch a couple of braces of rabbit this morning, so we can have some stew before we turn in. I'll take second watch."

So watches:
1. Jaxom + ?
2. Silas + ?
3. ? + ?
4 ?
I'll make with the ghost story once we're all gathered round the camp fire.

The landscape is a blasted wasteland. What trees that do grow are gnarled and shriveled looking, most of the land is bog or marsh punctuated by these copses of ugly stunted trees.

The party finds a decently defendable campsite and Gilmork finds what dinner there is to find. Deadfall is gathered and soon a fairly large bonfire is going.

Male Human (Chelaxian ethnicity) Inquisitor-8 (Current HP 53/61)

Silas puts a couple of sausages onto a skewer and holds them near the crackling flames of the bonfire and he lets out a loud sigh, "Ah I love campfires. Reminds me of my youth, all we need now is a ghost story!"

A little later, after making sure all the mercs are within earshot, he starts to tell a story as only a bard can. His simple words have a power all of their own and the story comes to life within everyone's mind's eye.

"A young boy is sleeping in his bed on a usual night. He hears footsteps outside his door, and peeks out of his eyes to see what is happening. His door swings open quietly to reveal a vampire carrying the corpses of his parents. After silently propping them up on a chair, he writes something on the wall in the blood of the dead bodies. He then hides under the childs bed.

The child is scared beyond belief. He can’t read the writing on the wall and he knows the creature is under his bed. Like any child, he pretends that he slept through the whole thing and hasn’t awoken yet. He lays still as the bodies, quietly hearing the rasps from under his bed.

An hour passes, and his eyes are adjusting more and more to the darkness. He tries to make out the words, but it’s a struggle. He gasps when he finally makes out the sentence.

“I know you’re awake”. He feels something shift underneath his bed."

Game Mechanics:

The above probably doesn't have any direct game mechanic changes. E.g. he's not trying to put a temporary shaken debuff. Rather this part of a longer play to freak the mercs out.

When it comes time for Silas to watch, he'll make sure the various torches are still lit. Something about the mound makes him wonder if pranks to keep the mercs awake are going to be needed...

Lucanor and Hecktor are on watch and at first he thinks it is a trick of the light, but no, its there. The shadows are moving, making steady progress toward the campsite. They are close before Lucanor can see them, as he has no special night vision. Lucanor surmises they are 60' away.
