"No argument here," Lucanor says, making sure every part of the trolls is now burnt away, "And I think we just cost Kreed some muscle." He'll follow Silas

Encounter Map

The party moves onward to the empty hill. In the darkness it takes a bit longer than it would during daylight. The party stakes a watch and manages a few hours of rest.

Soon riders can be heard approaching....

Michael and his small band of Golden Legionaries arrive, some two dozen battle hardened veterans of various skirmishes around the Darkmoon Vale. Two dwarves travel with Michael, one of them a Cleric of Torag, he heals the party's wounds and casts the spells of refreshment to aid the party in the upcoming fight.

Wounds are healed, Lesser Restoration is cast on the party

Michael Stamford, once adventurer and now Captain in the Gold Legion, approaches and says What is the plan?

Jaxom will ask Luc to open the chest they got from Vade's tower that morning.

"I know little in the way of tactics, but perhaps your troops could cordon the manor while we secure the town? Once the town is secure we can squeeze the odious man until he pops."

Silas nods and adds, "We've scouted the town. Things have taken a turn for the worst there, the Gavel has unilaterally declared independence and has the town on lockdown. Obviously we need to take him out but I'm really worried about what will happen to the remaining Townsfolk. I'm hoping you can keep them safe as possible, but we also need to prevent any cronies from escaping. There a few particulars you should know. We've dealt with that vicious thug Bloodeye. Some harpies had taken up residence in Vade's tower, we killed one and sorely wounded another. The third could be anywhere. The gavel himself is guarded by trolls, we killed a handful of lesser ones last night but I fear those where merely foot soldiers. Anyway in summary we'll take out the Gavel and you protect the town."

"You should also watch out for a giant and some hags. I've seen their footprints around the gavel's residence. If they've come looking for the town you're in for a tough fight Michael. Though we might be as well if they reside with the Gavel himself."

Gilmork remarks as the old companions come together for a war council.

Encounter Map

Michael is nonplussed, his time with the Golden Legion has prepared him exactly for this moment So, am I securing the town or am I marching on the manor. I've got two dozen good men, but not enough to do both. On horseback we can outrun a giant...hell we've tangled with a Hill Giant and her mate before, ran em off.

Gilmork looks to Silas and nods. "It's the town of course. We'll strike at the manor. You've got more eys and hands to keep the villagers safe from anything trying to hurt them. We will limit our view and actions towards Kreed himself."

Michael nods I agree. The town comes first, I have outriders scouting now... we should know more within an hour or two. What should we do in the meantime?

Sorry, I did but forgot. I'll get to it.

Assuming earlier...
Lucanor hastily works on unlocking the chest

Disable to unlock:1d20 + 7 ⇒ (2) + 7 = 9

If he found another trap (though I think Hecktor triggered them) 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (2) + 7 = 9

Ouch. I don't think that made it.

Silas looks at Michael, "Now? Well unless you've got a notion of how we might track an escaped harpy, I think we may need to wait for your outriders. Hate to admit it, but I'm exhausted. Not managed to get any sleep yet."

Encounter Map

As you wait for Michael's outriders to return, and catch up with Michael on the past weeks news, Lucanor unlocks the chest and Jaxom inspects the items...it seems that Sharvaros Vade left his prized possessions back in the Tower.

A headband that protects against fear
An Ioun Stone that hides you from undead
An ebony staff carved with bones and skulls

Sorry guys, I'm not 100% prepared for the next phase...give me a few days to work on some stuff.

Male Human (Chelaxian ethnicity) Inquisitor-8 (Current HP 53/61)

"Well, these aren't ours, but I hope Vade would approve of their use in saving the town. Maybe we can pay him for their rental?"

Encounter Map

Please bear with your unprepared GM...this is why I like APs so much. Building statblocks/maps/encounters is a chore...I had only begun doing it and I figured the Tower and subsequent stuff would take at least an extra week...

Michael's outrider comes back around 9am with grim news

Seems like you guys poked a hornets nest last night...what the hell did you do? The Gavel has everyone in the High Market. And he's hanging people! I couldn't get too close...the damn Trolls are out in daylight. I thought they stayed put during the day? the outrider, a fresh faced boy of maybe 18 summers says

Michael, with a particularly grim expression, scratches some words out on a parchment and says to a courier Take this and right for Ulfden. Ride hard and don't stop...for anything.

To the party Michael says This can get nasty real quick. We need a real Golden Legion here, not some out of the way company sized unit. I've written to the General...but he won't be able to do anything for days, maybe even a week.

Gilmork growls beneath his mask and his hands clench into fists and almost resemble claws.

"Perhaps we should all become invisible, jump out next to Kreed and lob his head off in front of everyone. Cut off the head of the snake immediately."

Niles, i know the feeling. The joyous burden of being the GM ;)

Hecktor's right mouth corner slightly curls up, revealing a hint of forced teeth.

"He's taking alot of needless actions.
That's just townsfolk, not soldiers.
I hadn't expected him not to turn paranoid after what we've been pulling off, sending him to the boneyard looks all the more satisfactory, doesn't it to you guys?"

Male Human (Chelaxian ethnicity) Inquisitor-8 (Current HP 53/61)

Lucanor's jaw sets, and his voice grows ice cold,"He's hanging people, you say? I wish I could say I was surprised, but no, now that I think on it, I'm mostly just enraged."

That Mercenary Lucanor hired still with him?

Encounter Map

Yep, and I've totally forgotten about him....sorry.

Male Human (Chelaxian ethnicity) Inquisitor-8 (Current HP 53/61)

No worries. Lucanor is mostly going to put him to work on getting the townsfolk to safety when the fighting starts I think. Sound like a good way to use him that won't cause too much hassle for you?

Encounter Map

That would be perfect.

Male Human (Chelaxian ethnicity) Inquisitor-8 (Current HP 53/61)

"As to the possible plans, attacking all from invisibility on Kreed has its appeal. Whatever we do, I think I should use Rithelm here," He nods to the man he's hired, "As a guide to bring as many folks from the Hollow to safety here. Probably put a bonus the more folks you get to encourage you," He adds as an aside to the merc, "Folks getting hanged could be Kreed being paranoid thinking everyone is helping us, just damn evil, or both. Either way, I want to save as many as left as possible."

"Gentlemen." Silas lets the word hang in the air for a moment. He wasn't loud when he spoke, but something in his voice made everyone turn and look.

Seeing he has his audience, Silas tells them with quiet menace, "We will capture the gavel. Alive. There is to be a trial and I shall insist upon a most cruel and unusual, yet singularly deserved and poetic punishment. There will be a geas the likes of which will be talked about for a thousand years. The gavel will wish he'd never been borne, and he shall long for death, but there shall be no surcease for him, none whatsoever."

"That's all fine Silas, but if the Gavel is caught in the heat of the moment, I hope you won't judge us harshly. If my aim is true, I might hit a more vital spot than usual."

"Whatever way we do this, we need to act quickly. We need a plan... Say we can get close, or a few of us can get close. Myself and Jaxom atop of a building for instance, providing cover for you three as you approach. We could start the fight. I'll bet we need more acid and fire though, there will be trolls aplenty there. I'll buff up Silas, Lucanor and Hecktor with the protection of the woods before we go, I can also bless someone's weapon or strength before any fight, but that must be done just before it though."

Silas stares flinty and in an oddly muted way he states, "Gilmork justice must be done, and it must be seen to be done. There will be no accidents."

Male Human (Chelaxian ethnicity) Inquisitor-8 (Current HP 53/61)

"I worship the goddess of justice, Silas, but sometimes punishment turns to vengeance. We gotta watch that. Much as I am tempted to give him back three fold what he's done. We have to stop him to save the innocent, and he may not give us much of a choice depending on how hard he fights. But we'll try. That's all we can do." Lucanor says.

Noble Silas has a great fire, but all things being equal -- I'm going to make sure we survive today -- even if it means upsetting poetic justice.

Jaxom nods at Silas' words but holds his peace. "I think that is a fine plan, friend Gilmork. I will summon the spirits that inhabit the blood of the earth to burn and confound the trolls. Or I will use this staff to steal their very lives. What do we know of the buildings that abut the High Market, with my wand I could let us step like the fey unseen between the worlds and take up a secure position. If there is a building with a roof access, that is where I will take us."

Jaxom mutters a protective charm. Mage Armor

Niles did we get any rest? If not that dictates what we do next.

Encounter Map

Yeah, you guys rested. Your good to go.

Michael says The way I figure it, we can charge the High Market...but that'll be a tough fight, damn tough. The High Market is separately walled, its got high ground so they would see us coming... Michael looks at his men and you can tell he doesn't want them to die needlessly Or, we can wait till the Gavel takes his self and his retinue back the the Manse. And we proceed as planned earlier. It's your call.

"I could get a small number of us in unseen and you could seize the gate yourself, but waiting might be more prudent."

Jaxom doesn't mention that he doesn't care if the citizens are hung. It would be terribly impolite. To his mind each dead settler was a blessing to the fey. These people had no intention of living in harmony with nature or the Vale's rightful ruler.

Silas had been thoughtful and nods, "Tactically wise, but I can't just sit back and wait while he's hanging people. It's time to hit the road! Assuming he's still there, we'll use Jaxom's magic and that wand to get into the High Market unseen. Kill all his cronies, but gentlemen lets try and take him alive. Hecktor I know you can hit people with the pommel of that scythe and it'll still drop em like a bag of stones."

Silas starts humming a marching song, and soon everyone is raring to go.
Tripple Time.

When an opportune moment arrives Silas beckons Jaxom over for a quiet word.

Jaxom:
Silas looks most grave as he asks Jaxom for a potentially very dangerous favor, "There's a good chance we're going to die to today, but we need to figure out what happens next if the gods grant us the courage and the luck to win. Assuming we capture the Gavel, I like to meet Syntira, to discuss his fate. As you probably know I have something in mind, which I believe is within her power. Convincing the Andorann authorities may be tricky so we shall need certain assurances..." The quiet menace in the bard's voice and the look in is eyes leaves Jaxom with no doubt that he intends something quite extreme.

I am chaotic good. I'm also dealing with a lot of anger issues from unknowingly wielding an evil empathic item which is playing on my negative emotions. Jaxom has been slipping towards CN in game for a while.

Male Human (Chelaxian ethnicity) Inquisitor-8 (Current HP 53/61)

"I'll try to stabilize the man as soon as he drops," Lucanor assures them Not that he deserves it, but it might be kinder than whatever Silas has planned to let the fellow die. Still, Justice is a hard road to know some days. Iomedae guide us all.

Jaxom, the mysterious meta-magic wand perhaps? ;)
Meta-magic wand of the Sith.
Give in to your anger, boy, let the hate flow through you!

"Non-lethal only?
Hmm, i'm curious what you're planning here. I think i, least of us all, would have a problem with a harsh punishment here."

Jaxom:
Silas nods his thanks, but gives you a curious appraising look when you make your suggestion. In the end he whispers without rancor, "In the short term, that would indeed be simplest. In the long term I strongly believe that would cause more problems than it would solve. Justice must be seen to be done."

Silas nods at Hecktor, realizing that's an entirely reasonable request. He replies simply, "The Gavel has been a calamity for man and fae alike. Off hand I can't think of any mortal who has caused such widespread harm. I intend to compel him to make good for every single misdeed to man and fae. He shall replant every single tree that the consortium felled. He shall pay wergild for every single person hurt or killed by himself or his cronies. He shall personally rebuild every single home that got damaged. He shall never again harm any person, fae or animal. He shall meekly accept any punishments meted out by those he wronged along the way. Any attempt to deviate shall make him deathly sick. Death itself shall provide no succor for every morning he shall be reborn until his task is complete."

I'm thinking a little of Sisyphus here.

Silas smiles, "Thanks Gilmork. Now we need to preserve Jaxom's resources as best we can, I can make myself invisible as I believe can Lucanor. We need to let Michael's troops in. To do that we'll hop over the gate, get it open and then we press on to the high market pronto. We'll make quite the racket there, drawing the heat from Michael's troops. Hopefully they can go door to door and get the people out."

Ok so, the plan seems to be that the party assaults the gate, opening it for Michael's force. Then they press on to the High Market (which has another gate). And repeat, then they take the fight to the Gavel, who is currently in the High Market hanging people.

Yeah pretty much. I can't see anything fancy working tbh.

As they get closer to town, the enormity of what they're about to attempt weighs down upon SIlas, 'I really might die today, and a lot of innocent folks too more than likely. Damn, how did it comes to this? Could Jeebs have stopped him? What happened to him anyway? As if I can't guess. Back to the mud.'

Male Human (Chelaxian ethnicity) Inquisitor-8 (Current HP 53/61)

"Do we know how many folks are guarding the gate? Maybe some invisibility to open it will save us trouble so we can do that and still have a chance to ambush Kreed?" Lucanor asks. Pardon if I'm asking things already spoken of. Bit addled this morning.

Encounter Map

Michael's outrider answers I saw a half dozen or so mercenaries guarding the main gate. Maybe a few I didn't spot...the High Market is the same, but trolls are guarding that gate. Keeping everyone in....seems most of the town is there. I got in on the river side, crawled through a rotten spot in the wall and got into the town that way....didn't try getting into the Market, just high tailed it back here when I saw the Trolls and heard the news of the hangings.
