GM Niles |
Oh, Oh..we have visitors. Welcome Welcome! Come in! the doddering old man says waving toward the sound.
Comein, the temple is always open for worship. Come in!
Silas Hawkwinter |
Silas takes in his surroundings and noting the bucket and rag, Silas murmurs, "Looks like he is Hecktor, I wonder how long hes been here..."
Silas approaches the old man, and noticing dirt among the pews despite the man's best efforts, Silas gently offers to help, "Here, let me help you with that. Mild can be such a nuisance to remove. I'll scrub this down in no time for you.'
Silas attacks the dirt with gusto and before long there's something resembling a sheen of polish around the pew he's cleaning just as there is something like a sheen of sweat on his brow.
Conversationally, Silas asks, "Tell me about Aroden, he was the one who dealt with the whispering tyrant wasn't he?"
Diplomacy: 1d20 + 13 ⇒ (12) + 13 = 25
If Silas coaxes any response from him, he mentions, "We've been fighting one of Tar-Baphons minions, a twisted and dark thing called Drazmorg. Managed to wrest a lesser seal from it, I'd like to think Aroden would have approved. Someday we'll have to take Drazmorg head on, that scares me witless... Grandfather, would you give us your blessing? It would mean a lot to me."
Silas figures this guy must have been a priest of Aroden who couldn't accept the God's Demise. How he's still alive after all this time is an open question, but alive he is. Perhaps he knows something useful, but if not there's no harm in being kind to a broken old man who apparently has lost everything.
GM Niles |
He is a very old half elf. The book has him as an elf, but I was like "Why would an Elf worship the God of Humanity?"
The old man smiles Father Aroden. He would approve of your quest...I. the man drifts off in some memory from long ago. Come in come in! he says The services won't be for some hours but petitioners of Aroden may pray at the shrine any time. his eyes and mind have seemed to go dark again.
As Silas cleans the pew, the man speaks The Dark Star....is dangerous! Dangerous! It brings death and hate into this place! Burn it to the ground! and then he dodders off into a corner to continue his losing battle of the dirt and grime.
Hecktor |
Probably due to some sentiment of appreciation, Hecktor takes 5 gold and hands it to the man as a donation.
"I am not a faithful of Aroden, but i can appreciate devoted care to one's life's work. This is for your use as you see fit."
Substracted it from my tab at loot log.
Silas Hawkwinter |
Kn:Religion: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (13) + 4 = 17
On the nose!
"The Dark Star, hmm what's that?", Silas wracks his brain, "Oh! That's to do with those blasted Asmodeans." Thinking of the generals words Silas mutters bitterly, "Our hands are tied on that front. Unless... Grandfather, is the black star taking people against their will? If so I'll gladly strike the match myself." 'And if it proves difficult to burn, well we know where there is a /lot/ of alchemist's fire...'
GM Niles |
The old man has slipped from lucidity and now only mumbles about prayer service and the "faithful". Clearly the loss of one's god can have devastating effects on the psyche.
Jaxom, Stone-Twin |
Jaxom is still walking around. There must be some faithful left or someone taking care of that old man. If he were truly incompetent, he couldn't have lasted since Aroden died without help.
Silas Hawkwinter |
Following Hecktor's lead, Silas puts a matching donation into the offering box thinking, 'If nothing else, that'll see him through the winter.'
Quietly to the others, Silas says "I er, don't think there's anything more we can do here for the poor man. Shall we check out the Dead Well? That's certainly a curious name for an inn!"
Silas starts heading towards the door.
The dead well, hmm I wonder if that's like the Yawning Portal Inn from water deep? Sort of hope not, since under-mountain would kill us.
Lucanor |
Lucanor has used part of his day to check out the outside of Pact Hall, while trying to avoid detection. If caught, he acts like he was doing something else.
Not his intent to go INTO pact hall, just counting windows and doors that are obvious from the outside, while he waits to rob the alchemist that night
If needed

GM Niles |
A two-story construction of stone and timber towers above
the rooftops of nearby buildings and rivals the watchtowers
for prominence. A sign near its entrance depicts a stone well
surrounded by weeds. Bronze letters affixed to the sign above the
picture read “The Dead Well.”
Long-railed hitching posts frame a wide stoop and tall, narrow
pine doors providing entrance into the inn. Wood smoke wafts
from stone chimneys rising from the steep, wood-shake roof,
carrying the promise of warmth and a hot meal within.
Its getting to be afternoon.
A older man says What can we do ya for mates?
The strange young man named Bumbo is in the common room also and he approaches the party.
Hey ya, you like my cape! Its Yell O, my unk ule the BAHRON give it to me.
Silas Hawkwinter |
Silas enters the common room and he tries to unobtrusively scan the room for things of interest (mistletoe...) or potential threats, but the gloom and the smoke irritating his eyes make things hard to see and he misses the attention of the men in the corner...Perception: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (4) + 8 = 12

Silas grins to the older man saying, "Small beer for me, plus whatever my companions are having. Oh and I'd love to eat something I didn't cook. Only so much boiled mutton a man can stand!"
Diplomacy: Gather rumors: 1d20 + 13 ⇒ (12) + 13 = 25
Hecktor |
"I'll have an ale please, and i second my friend on the meal."
Hecktor takes a quick look over his shoulder.
Perception: 1d20 ⇒ 1
As the young man came over, Hecktor doubts the guy's education.
What a speech problem, that or he's had a smack over the head too much.
"Mm, yellow is okay to get noticed in the dark, but not my color."
Silas Hawkwinter |
Silas also replies to the young man, "That's um a nice cape, and very yellow! Was it a birthday present?"
GM Niles |
Bumbo hangs around a while, pestering the group with questions and talking about his cape and his "unkule"
After some time, the place begins to fill up, mostly with locals. Smaar Janderfut comes in and takes a place at the bar.
Hecktor |
Hecktor had been utterly ignoring much of Bumbo's pestering, there's things that irritate you and he wanted nothing of it.
The figure of Jandefut drew a glance though.
Beardy fellow, that one.
"You might want to avoid that particular stool, another guy spoiled some of his drink on it and it hasn't been cleaned yet.", Hecktor points out the wet on the stool.
Silas Hawkwinter |
Silas nods at Hecktor and select a different stool. He then asks the barkeep, "The dead well is a strange name for an inn, how did it get it's name? Don't tell me, it's built on top of a well right?"
GM Niles |
Lucky Ben Willhuff says Yeh, that there well been dried up for near 15 years, built my Inn over top of it. Its a wishing well ya see. Gives me good luck, where ya think I got my name from?
Over the course of time you see that several patrons toss copper coins into the well.
Hecktor |
Been to china few years back, the bottoms of their temples' fountains are well decorated with coins and even paper money.
Hecktor orders another ale.
"Well...'t seems to pay off, don't it? Why'd it dry up anyway, overuse or something within the soil?"
Silas Hawkwinter |
Curiosity strikes Silas, "Maybe I'll make a wish, back in a mo'!" He wanders over to were Ben said the well was and sure enough he sees it. He fumbles in his pocket to get a copper and he drops it in and had a good look at the well before returning to the bar.
Perception: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (17) + 8 = 25
Back at the bar, Silas says, "No Hecktor, I'm not telling you what I wished for, it won't come true if I did! Oh and it's your round."
He then tries to draw Ben into some small talk, "Looks like we did the right thing by getting here early, the place is filling up."
Diplomacy: Gather rumors: 1d20 + 13 ⇒ (13) + 13 = 26
GM Niles |
The well is too dark to see the bottom, but you hear a faint noise as the coin strikes something either on its way down or at the bottom you can't tell.
Hours: 1d4 ⇒ 1
After an hour or so
Silas Hawkwinter |
Flavorful rumors but Silas is not interested in money. Although he wouldn't mind taking a look at the bottom of the well to see what's down there (curiosity etc...) but that hardly seems like something we have time to do now. Anyone want to do anything more in here? If not Silas will try to precipitate a meeting with Smaar, but not here - too many witnesses.
Silas Hawkwinter |
Silas keeps an eye on Smaar Janderfut's tankard, and when it's low he makes a small show of getting up, clapping his hands to get the attention of his companions and saying "Right! We're on duty tomorrow lads, much as I'd like to stay here - that's not what we get paid for..."
Silas then meanders out.
perception: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (14) + 8 = 22
If nobody is looking, he hangs around to see if Smaar decides to leave early as well. Otherwise he'll head back to the lodge for an hour or so and then head out separately to talk to Smaar.
GM Niles |
Wow, sorry Luc. I missed your last post entirely.
Lucanor cases the Pact Hall for a few hours and sees that it is open to the public during the day a few petitioners enter the Pact Hall and leave some time later. Near dusk an acolyte comes outside and closes the door and locks it.
Silas hangs out, waiting for Smaar but is interrupted by a smiling Bumbo Hey ya!! Whatcha doin out here friend! S'not good to bee out after dark....my UHNKUL says gotta go inside..CURR FEW Bumbo hangs around mumbling about his cape and his doggies. And after a minute or so he heads towards the South.
The cape is unmagical....just yellow.
Lucanor heads to the Alchemists Shoppe and attempts some B&E.
Disable Device: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (8) + 10 = 18Disable Device: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (8) + 10 = 18Disable Device: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (15) + 10 = 25
Luc manages to get inside the shop.
Lucanor manages to get into the shop and move through it when suddenly he hears movement across the hall.
Argith enters with a lantern Hello? Its obvious he hasn't seen Luc, but has rather heard a noise. I'm assuming that Luc is invisible.
Hecktor |
Hecktor frowns slightly as Bumbo holds up Silas.
"Say kiddo, i do believe i overheard a girl who walked outside just now, she had an eye on a young man in a yellow cape. Now you're the only one i see fitting the description. If i were you, i'd find the fine lass, far better a time spender than hanging late in the tavern."
Silas Hawkwinter |
Silas watches Bumbo go and he mutters to Hecktor, "That's a weird one and no mistake. Well let's not hang around here. I think we'll have to give Smaar a little drinking up time."
Silas will head back to the Lodge and in an hour or so he'll sneak back to the blacksmiths.
GM Niles |
Lucanor holds still for a minute while Argith looks around the room, eventually Argith moves away from the room and into the living quarters. Another minute goes by and the lantern is extinguished and Argith seems to go back to sleep. Roll another Stealth if you plan on moving about the unlit room, or will you have a light source?
Silas and Hecktor go to meet with Smaar Janderfut and have to dodge a militia patrol! Stealth and Perception please from each of you.
Not sure what Jaxom wants to do besides sleep, also Gilmork its time to roll opposed Stealth/Perception for the Watchtowers if you are ready. You haven't posted in this game for 143 hours. That is 119 hours too long. Please post at least once per 24 hour period.
Lucanor |
Stealth: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (3) + 10 = 13
Not sure if blindfighting would help in this regard
A bit closer than I like, now let's look around careful like and use what little light we can get from the windows if we have to.

Silas desperately searches for an alley or some obstical he and Hecktor can dart behind. "Quick Hecktor! Here", he whispers urgently, with his back to the wall of an alley.
Silas concentrates and visuizes the wall being a good foot further out than it is. Enough to hopefully disguise their location, so long as nobody touches it...
Silas casts silent image. DC 15 will if interacted with.
GM Niles |
Silas notices the patrol coming long before they hear or see the pair and his actions cause the patrol of militiamen to walk right on past.
1d20 + 6 ⇒ (16) + 6 = 22
Lucanor hears What the hell! Who's there! Show yourself or I'll burn you out. and Argith lights his lantern and Lucanor hears movement from the other side of the building. You have 2 rounds of actions before Argith comes barging in.
Silas and Hecktor make their way into the Bucket and Bellow and Smaar meets them.
We have to make this quick. The damned Guards are both sleeping. the man says My boy Alger is watching them, he'll raise a ruckus if they wake. Then Smaar says The Baron must be stopped, how do you plan on doin that and how can I help?
Silas Hawkwinter |
"We need to infiltrate the keep, and take him out. Not sure how yet, but I'm thinking some watch uniforms would come in handy... If you know of any back ways in that would help, otherwise I'll have to talk us in. We also plan to let the army in, but we must defang the defences first. We have made some progress there, the vast stockpile of alchemist's fire is being dealt with as we speak."
Any idea how big the patrol is?
GM Niles |
My boys and I deliver weapons regular to the armory inside the castle. I could take a couple of ya, say ye was hired hand. Smaar makes a sour face Argith is a bastard. I don't let my boys go near em, likes fire more than people he does. I still think he was responsible for the fire what killed his own folks.
Smaar thinks a minute and says Well, I could get ya two uniforms.... with a jerk of his thumb back towards the living quarters
Silas Hawkwinter |
Good luck Luc! I'm sure you can deal with that alchemist.
Silas nods to Smaar, "Yes that could work, two uniforms should be enough for Hecktor and myself. The others are good at sneaking and can hitch a ride inside the delivery or tag along invisible. Still we really need to know the layout of the keep before we go blundering in, ideally we want our entry to go undiscovered for as long as possible. There must be somebody in town who knows the layout, an servant or some such, or maybe there are records from when it was built?"
Gilmork |
Gilmork sneaked out of the tavern earlier in the evening, before Silas and Hecktor make their way off with Smaar Janderfut.
He sneaks around the watchtowers in his guise of a dark shade with his new mask, no whites of his eyes are to be seen.
If Gilmork can take 10 on Stealth he will for a total of 29 or more depending on how full the moon is. So it might be 30 or even 32.If I can't take 10, Stealth: 1d20 + 19 ⇒ (10) + 19 = 29
At the first watchtower, he takes his time to see where the guards are, listen in if they talk and see if there's something to be sabotaged or not.
Perception: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (11) + 8 = 19
GM Niles |
Well the tables/chair is wooden. The jars are made of a ceramic substance and sealed with wax. It's a workshop so there are workshoppy things in it.
Smaar says probably servants there, but I don't know the names. I dunno about records.
1d20 + 6 ⇒ (18) + 6 = 24
Gilmork gets close enough and listens long enough to ascertains the guard schedule, so now he could figure out how best to attack and destroy a watchtower with minimal response. Also, now any action in town will have a delayed response as Gilmork knows the guard schedule.
Anything else you were looking for?
Silas Hawkwinter |
Silas ponders, "Any idea who might know? Don't worry if you don't we'll figure something out. Anyway lets try and get something sorted for the morning after tomorrow. I figure it'll take us that long to gather evidence about house Almir. I have my suspicious but I need proof one way or the other."
Gilmork |
Gilmork looks around for more specific information or orders, if he gets a chance to get into a guardsroom while the guards are out he will try to sneak in and try to look at the orders in the hopes to get more information about the castle itself or the Baron.
If he's not able to, he might try to discern the strengths and weaknesses of the regular soldiers, not the recently drafted from the populace.
If those regulars have weaknesses or strengths it might be good to know them if we want to take them out.
GM Niles |
its a Kn:Local or Prof:Soldier roll to get statistics or abilities for a humanoid creature. Also, the Guards barracks is in the castle.

Something, maybe just blind luck, gives Argith a heads up and Lucanor can't manage to grab ahold of him. Perception: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (20) + 6 = 26. Argith also gets a good look at Lucanor.
Argith reaches out to touch Lucanor Touch: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (4) + 4 = 8 but Luc dodges aside.
