Lucanor nodded if asked if he was coming, and as he moves away with Silas and Hecktor, "You know... as much as I should resent that little town, I feel guilty leaving it in such a state."

Encounter Map

Ok, so Luc, Silas and Hecktor are going to make their way to Almas.

This is a three day journey, meanwhile back in the Vale.

Jaxom and Gilmork are going to begin guerrilla warfare against the Gavel's pet soldiers.

Ok, the three going to Almas go ahead and do all your shopping/selling since I know you guys ave been waiting on that. Also, lets assume that it will take 1d4 + 1 ⇒ (2) + 1 = 3 days to get an audience with a representative of the people's council.

Gilmork and Jaxom, go ahead and lay out a plan for how you will go about attacking the Gavel's men. We might do some combats while the other guys do their thing in Almas

Well we will first inform Michael and the fey of the new situation, unless we have faster communication methods to do so.

Gilmork will try to go about undetected in Falcon's Hollow around the times the regular guards are posted, trying to find out if and when the new 'guards' actually leave town and head out towards the forest or somewhere else.

Diplomacy: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (14) + 4 = 18

If Gilmork hears nothing of guards travelling outwars, he'll try to sow distrust between the Gavel and his new-found company. He'll need Jaxom's help for the stealth missions however.

Silas and whomever decides to go with him finds themselves in a cramped smelly office of a local barrister known for finding "loopholes" in the law. This man, Saal Gudman, is known for having dealings with all from the most notorious criminals to the highest reaches of politics. Also, he is within your price range. Like he always says "If your in need, better make a trip to Saal!"

He wasn't expecting much else, Hecktor saw some shady types coming from where they were headed.

As Hecktor walks in with the others, he takes in the interior.

"Well, well, he's done pretty good considering the changes around here."

"Hm? Well not personally, i've only been here before. Sometimes we had to get equipment for missions that were.....hard to come by within Almas. But with all sorts of people coming to this guy, that should be of no big surprise."

Taking the liberty of setting the scene slightly...
An elder but bored looking secretary invited the deputation from Falcon's Hollow into Saal Gudman's cramped and dingy office. It was a little uncomfortable with so many in there and Baleson was given the only client's in deference to his bad leg.

Saal was busy shuffling various papers from a voluminous file and was showing no sign of acknowledging their presence...

"Ahem!", coughs Silas politely.

Saal stands and says Yeah? What can I Do ya for? the slightly paunching man says as he stands up. He looks you over and says Drunken and disorderly? Fighting in the streets? Ohh, adventurers...Tax Problems?

Silas favours the unctuous man with a wintery grin and tells him, "Nothing that simple I'm afraid. No we are representatives of Falcons Hollow where the normal rule of law has, for want of a better word, been usurped. The gavel of the lumber consortium is quite literally getting away with murder. We seek an audience with the Peoples Council and an advocate to put forward our complaint."

Encounter Map

Oh boy. Advocate against the Lumber Consortium....well I have good news and better news! he says with a slimy grin The good news is I'll take your case! The better news is that no one else will, so I get to charge you more! he says while chortling at his own wit.

So, what is the complaint? I mean besides murder, because seriously no one is gonna buy that one.

Male retired & married fighter Fighter 8 HP 82/82 F+10/R+6/W+4 30ft AC24/14/22

Hecktor looks sideways at Silas.
"Well, we're not taking that out of account.
Let's see, fraud, extortion, ordering a murder, shady occupation of a hamlet."

If by that word Saul would look surrprised;
"Haven't you noticed the entire regulator platoon is gone from Almas? They're all over there."

"We can prove the murder of the Sheriff was done at the Gavels command but yeah I guess its not really a crime that anyone cares about. I guess the murder of an Eagle Knight is of no consequence either. I doubt all the various other crimes Hecktor mentioned matter. Still there is one crime that should, the Gavel is trying to brush aside the results of a legitimate election. He has illegally installed a new council. We have a petition and affidavits signed by a large number of residents. If Almas doesn't act we will need to redraw all the maps because Falcon's Hollow right now is occupied territory!"

Saal smiles Election fraud....ooh that one might get some play. Saal starts mumbling to himself Get in with Gejni's faction...surely a raise to the High Barrister's league...A council seat? Champion of the people?

Saal turns around and says If there is one thing that Andorans won't cotton, its messing with their elections. A damn national treasure those things...someone circumventing that..well...we might could turn this to our advantage. Ok, I'll need you to pay me now, so that we have some Attorney/Client privilege and I can go find us a Councilman who wants to take this on. Saal motions to a steel bound chest on the floor. He whispers a word in magic and it springs open. It'll be a thousand now to retain my services and then we will talk about other restitution once we get going.

Male Human (Chelaxian ethnicity) Inquisitor-8 (Current HP 53/61)

"Might get some play?" Lucanor snorts softly, "I don't suppose you'd lower that to 500, clear as a bell you plan to use this to better your standing if you win, so surely that's worth a discount of coin in exchange."

Saal looks nonplussed Look. I don't do "deals" or "favors". You want someone who is willing to ruffle the Consortium's feathers, I'll do it, but its gonna cost. Let's not even talk about the fact that you are gonna have to provide protection for me once this brief gets out. You know how much Coin comes from that shithole of a place? How much the Consortium wants to keep its stranglehold on that craptastic little hamlet? You are about to piss off a bunch of people...and I'm gonna help ya, but only if you wanna pay for it.

"Give us a second, please." Lucanor says to Saal, and then backs up a distance to whisper to his friends.

"I don't think he's going to lower his price... this fellow is serious, and greedy. Our real concern, besides the outrageous cost, is how do we know he won't sell us out if the Consortium pays him more? He seems pretty damn amoral"

"Saal My man, you're probably thinking a bunch of schmucks just walked into your office, with more money than sense. I mean taking on the Gavel, that's impossible right? Nobody has pockets that deep right?"

Silas tosses the man a heavy purse, and gives him a winning smile, saying "You know I think you're right about the murders, sure we might be able to make some of his swing and we will. But we'll never pin that on the Gavel. No I was looking up some of the tax codes in the public library yesterday and wow are those penalties harsh! I don't know if you've ever been in the Gavel's manor house, it's got three wings, fifty bedrooms, a ballroom and it's made entirely from iron wood. Do you think he paid the taxes on that? Of course you'd need an insider to prove it, somebody who intimately knew all about his financial and other business activities."

Silas starts playing with the most ostentatious diamond you have ever seen, spinning it on the desk, "Somebody with grudge. I won't lie, the man we have in mind, our ace in the hole is a bad man. In exchange for turning state's evidence, he'll need immunity and protection. Oh and he'll need this..." Silas indicates the diamond.

"Because the Gavel's Mercs cut the bloody cross into him before they cut the bloody cross into him and despoiled his corpse. This is the price for resurrecting the legitimately elected Sheriff of Falcon's Hollow who was murdered because he knew too much and because he got squeamish about assassinating Eagle Knights... Saal you're going to be the man who took the Gavel down. You're gonna be rich. You're gonna be famous. You're gonna be in demand. Oh and you're hired."

Saal Gudman, slimy barrister to the criminal underground, smiles. Ok, so here is how it works. Andoran keeps itself safe from Cheliax through its Navy. The Navy is superior because of Darkwood. Darkwood comes from the Darkmoon Vale, of which your little hamlet is a key place for the damn lumber. Now, the Consortium controls all the Darkwood trade...and the man Kreed controls the majority of that. So..how do you go after a man with that much power?

Saal doesn't wait for anyone because he is already talking again You don't! You let someone else do it! See, there is a Councilman who wants the Darkwood trade nationalized and run by bureaucrats from Almas. National security he claims....we gotta get him to go after the Gavel. If Kreed loses the Darkwood trade, well he won't be a problem any more. The Councilman's name is Beltin Genji, and he is a right bastard. But he can be our bastard...you know for a small fee.

Right, then we can't set a trap for them that unseen. I had hoped we could set a trap and lure them into spiked pits or something or Command them to approach a covered spiked pit or a concealed pit with snakes in it. Guess we're up to stealth missions and breaking into the Gavel's house for scare tactics and sowing discontent.

Jaxom:
If we both can get under an Invisibility spell, I could get us into the house easily using Sands of Time, after that we could harass the the gavel with Silent Images of Payden looking menacingly at him, use Sands of Time on his matrass so he can't sleep well in his own house, possibly even make his roof collapse on him or have him fall through the floor using that spell. Grease on his stairs, Prestidigitation to write ghostly messages on his walls. We could try to make his whole house fall on top of him and make him believe a ghost is haunting him.

What do you think?

Also a Shame neither of us has Ghost Sound

Beltin Genji is a Councilor from Almas. He was a Barrister who rose through the ranks to become a member of the People's Council at only 35. He has many business interests throughout Andoran including some logging interests in the Darkmoon Vale. You find out that many of the "FreeJacks" in fact sell to his lumber outfit which is based in Olfden. Most of his money however is in shipping, riverine and ocean going.

Late that evening an exhausted looking Silas meanders back into the rooms the party had rented. Stifling a yawn, Silas plops down into an armchair and says, "Well I found a few things about Beltin Genji, he's one of the youngest on the People's Council, aged 35 and very ambitious. Turns out many of the FreeJacks sell lumber to his Olfden based outfit and another of his interests make boats including warships. Still all that's a side show for him, most of his money comes from various types of shipping, including apparently the ferry we've been using to get to and from the hollow."

Silas pauses to decant some wine into a glass from a tumbler, he considers it for a moment, savoring the aroma before continuing. "Reading between the lines I think our Mr Genji would very much like a bigger slice of the darkwood trade, like all of it. Not sure what I think about that, sounds a bit like trading one set of soulless corporate masters for another. I did try to find any hints of scandal around Genji - there must be something but I didn't find it. Anyway I think he would be most receptive for ways to disenfranchise the lumber consortium. I bet tax irregularities and the Gavel's erratic behavior can be made to look truly awful in council, especially with the war with Chellax rumbling on. Yup that's our angle, the Gavel is a bloodsucking parasite to the Treasury and danger to the war effort. Killings and extortion apparently don't cut ice." Silas gives the last a sour note.

In the offices of Saal Gudman, the barrsiter prepares a legal brief, and the beginnings of legislation that will strip the Lumber consortium of its exclusive rights to the Darkwood trade and nationalize the trade. The brief details various wrongdoings of the Lumber Consortium as well as a legal petition for redress of election fraud.

Meanwhile back in Falcons Hollow, Gilmork and Jaxom think about how best to sabotage the Gavel's mercenary force. They hear rumors about how certain specialists and officers frequent Jac'a'Napes every other night, and think they could perhaps ambush them as they leave.

In Almas, former Sheriff and current Mayor of Falcons Hollow goes to Councillor Beltin Genji's residence alongside Silas, Lucanor and Hecktor.

Deldrin Baleson secures an audience with Genji (who was previously contacted by Saal Gudman), and explains the situation in Falcons Hollow.

Beltin, a young man of only 38 (has been sitting on the Council for 3 years), looks over the party. I've heard much about your exploits, even here in the Capitol, your rescue of the Children of Falcons Hollow did not go unnoticed. Silas enters the Oak Paneled room dominated by a large table with a writing bureau and a deep plush carpet the color of norther Andorran red wine. 'Surprisingly tasteful, almost understated', thinks Silas, 'No hang on this is all iron wood! While everything is in the finest taste, the wealth on display is positively obscene...'

With a slight lump in his throat politely looks around, 'Swimming with shards here boy, mind your P's and Qs. Silas pushes such thoughts to the back of his mind and concentrates on the expected niceties, "I do believe that's a Greyson?? Oh it is! How wonderful. And this table! The craftsmanship is remarkable, polished to a mirror shine. Such a difficult material to work with too."

Formalities over, Beltin enquirers how he can be of assistance.

"Sir we are here on the gravest of matters, that of national security. It's no secret that without the ironwood, the Andorann navy would be hard pressed to fend off the Chelaxian curs. I see I have your attention. Sir I think we can all agree that control of the ironwood trade should lie in the hands of somebody who is reliable, unflappable even, and above all a patriot. Sadly the current prefect of the ironwood trade is neither... Currently he's holed up in that mansion of his, with pretty much the entire Regulator company, jumping at ghosts. He's too scared to walk alone to the bathroom in his own house. And he simply won't venture into the town he owns. That brings us neatly onto the second problem, as long as the ironwood flows, so what if he treats the town as his own personal fiefdom? The fact he's significantly underpaid his taxes for years is vexing, how else do you think he can afford an entire mercenary company? That's not really on given how hard pressed the treasury is with the war effort. And then there's all the scurrilous rumors about allegedly murdered Eagle Knights. Oh I'm sure that'll never stick in court but does this man sound like a patriot to you? I think not! No Andorann simply can't afford to place all it's eggs in that man's basket, what do you think he would do if Cheliax offered more for ironwood... The solution is simple, we need to break the stranglehold the lumber consortium has on the ironwood trade. Free companies must be allowed in, without let or hindrance."
