Well, the pre-flight check is clear. Time to download and verify the passenger list.

He takes his time and double checks the passenger list. He then makes his way to the shuttle door, glad that the humans put enough headroom in for his 6' 3" body without having to constantly duck his head. Some of his taller brethren had warned him to be careful, and went on at some length about how cramped the Ysoki ships could be.

Knowing he still had over fifteen minutes before take off, he takes the time to straighten his armor, dim his mote, and check that his scarf is properly in place before opening the door and allowing the stairs to descend.

"Shuttle to Absalom station, via Satellite 38 and Satellite 35! Ready to board!" he booms out.

Holding the data pad ready, he starts greeting each passenger as they approach. Smaller than normal passenger list today.

The Okimoro is a nicely appointed shuttle. One thing that you can say about the Starfinder Society... They don't do things by halves. Ever since the Scoured Stars Incident, they've been recruiting like mad to fill up their emptied ranks, and offering incentives that other organizations couldn't possibly compete with. Offers for free classes at the Lorespire Complex, lodging vouchers in Drifter's End on Absalom Station, ship training and steady work. Some of you may have already done a mission or two for them already.

Others may have been acquaintances of Duravor Steelhand Kreel, a curmudgeonly dwarvish Starfinder who'd been known to help kids out of the gangs and into honest work, and who seemingly has ties everywhere. Helping miners in the Diaspora, visiting the Generation Ship Idarii, or hanging out in a bar in Akiton to chat with those eking out a living on the big red planet.

To each and every one of you, Duravor had sent a note:

Hey there, been a long time. If you're interested, I have work for you back on Absalom Station with the Society. Been following your career, and think you have potential. If you think the same, why not come out? I got some lodgings all set up, and you can see what I've got to offer. We can drink a few of my beers, you can tell me what you've been doing with yourself all this time, take a tour of the Lorespire, and then you can decide for yourself.

If you don't like it, I'll be personally happy to stake your ticket back. That's my word, and you know I'm good for it. I've reserved a seat on the Okimoro for you, and plan to meet you when you arrive out by Dock 94 at Drifter's End.

Yours,
Duravor Kreel

Hawthorne boarded the shuttle, wearing his home world in his skin. The thasteron ore in Akiton's environment had tattooed the humans living there various shades of rust, and the son of miners was no different in that regard. He had managed to differentiate himself from his family by escaping from a life doomed to risk in one of the few still-operational mines. He was born with a perceptive and curious mind, and his skills caught the attention of the local exarchs of Triune. The All-Code was ironically popular among the machinists of Akiton, especially the Precursor, Brigh. Ironic because it was Triune's gift of Drift travel that was responsible for the closing of hundreds of thasteron mines and the joblessness induced poverty of their adherents. Hawthorne recognized this irony, but he did not hold it against the artificial deity. He understood, even before he was introduced to the doctrine of Brigh, that the universe followed one rule: adapt or perish.

Sophia was born when Hawthorne was almost thirteen years old. He programmed the initial code that would become the artificial intelligence guiding and protecting him on a computer cobbled together from scavenged parts taken from the local junk yards. By the time he was fourteen, she was making intuitive leaps and assumptions in her reasoning. She could pass the Turning test shortly after his fifteenth birthday, and not long after that, she hacked her own access to the infosphere. Her activities on the infosphere triggered the Triunite investigation that led them to Hawthorne. They invited both of them--as equals--into the priesthood, and they accepted. Hawthorne quickly rose to the rank of Innovator and earned the right to bear an exocortex, and Sophia happily merged with her creator.

They had served the Starfinder Society for a few months now and seen more in that time than they had in all the years prior. Both of them were eager to return to the Lorespire Complex, and even though they were active members of the Dataphiles, they understood the Acquisitives' money-sense had a purpose, so they took the opportunity for a free flight back from visiting Hawthorne's family that Duravor Kreel offered.

Hawthorne smiled at the pilot as he entered, though he knew that the four-armed giant would not be smiling back. He was not sure what the kasatha equivalent non-verbal sign of a pleasant greeting was. Surprisingly, he had only encountered a few kasatha in passing and worked with none. He had more experience working with the far more alient shirren.

Do you think they find you vulgar for showing your mouth? Sophia asked in his head as he took a seat in the middle of the cabin.

"I certainly hope not," he replied in thought.

Nodding as the human came aboard, Zeyram checked his datapad. I only see one Atikon native human male on the list. This must be Hawthorne. Only one name —I wonder if that is his family name or the common name he gives to others? Well guess I will just work with what I have.

Zeyram greets him “Greetings, Mr. Hawthorne. I am Zeyram, your pilot for this trip. Welcome aboard! We will be taking off as soon as all the passengers have boarded. Refreshments are available if you can just give me your preference.

"Thank you," he says to the offer of refreshments. "And it's just Hawthorne--or Innovator, if you worship the All-Code and wish to be formal--I'll take purified water. Zeyram quickly taps in a note on his data pad. Perfers informal address. Alll-Code, must be a priest of Triune. I wonder if he has any interest in how the different races adapted Triune’s gift to their ships. I’ll have to feel him out about that later...

Arriving at the spaceport the colourful vesk stops to take a photo with the one person who recognises him from the relatively unknown tridcast reality show 'Jims jams', where the eponymous Jim and his trusty sidekick quadbike-drone Buster fix all sorts of mechanical and electrical problems on broken down and rusted out starships.

Once Buster is checked in as cargo, Jim heads off to board the ship "I wonder if they have warmed peanuts, I sure could go for some peanuts right about now"

"Nuts? One moment and I can check. Would you like some beer, juice or another beverage to go with them? We have a dwarven beer...Ja Ger Fist?" He badly mispronounces the dwarven name. Cade muses on memories as he finishes up on satellite 38 and stows his gear, Steelhand, eh, I didn't think he'd remember me. Must have seen 'im a few times down the shop I s'pose.

Cade's memories are fond: few 'bigwigs' make it down the workshops when they visit the the Old Arc (the Arcanamirium) and those that do automatically earn some kudos with the support staff.

As his torque booster wraps around the last piece of cable, Cade looks over the plans one last time, "Well, it ain't goin' anywhere soon. Must be s!$* bein' a research ass for Bremlik, cosmic rays eh?"

Then his thoughts return to Steelhand's offer: he could do with better lodgings for Zuni and himself, especially with a little one on the way. The apartment in downlow didn't have reliable filters anyway, and the cleanser was on the way out. Now seems like the right time to be on the up and up.

Killing time, Cade flicks the vid-screen over to whatever ent.-stream he can grab: Cricket, and the Vipers are losing again, They've got to chuck that Denny Besa out of a frickin' airlock or somethin'. Crap coach; crap team...

A blue LED indicator illumines on the customized datajack installed on Hawthorne's right temple as he remotely logs into the shuttle's public access entertainment. Sophia resists the urge to hack into the core systems. The Starfinder Society is known to have better than average security systems. You've seen the code for one shuttle, you've seen them all, anyhow, she laments to Hawthorne and as an excuse for not meddling, unable to hide her desires from her bonded creator. Oh, look! It's Big Jim from the spherevid.

Hawthorne looks to the large vesk entering the shuttle. "So it is," he says aloud. "He must have been shooting on a vessel near Akiton."

Get his autograph!

"Have you been browsing the archaic dictionary? When was the last time anyone carried a pen let alone paper?"

Hawthorne sets down his water and stands. "Big Jim? Sophia is a bit of a fan," he says with a chuckle as he taps the datajack on the side of his head. "Do you mind if she takes a picture?"

”Forgive us our delay,” says a massive shirren filling the doorway of the shuttle, a military pack slung across one broad shoulder, the forms of many weapons cases showing beneath the fabric each time the pack shifts. The shirren’s antennae twitch and rub together, taking in the shuttle and its inhabitants. He moves his mandibles back and forth rhythmically before speaking aloud again.

”The best approximation of my name is Xyklik Cold-Scythe-In-Harvest.”

He moves with rigid precision, fast for something so large, and chooses a seat with a view of the exit hatch and then sets his pack in one of the storage compartments above the seat for the quickest access. He produces a communicator and oddly-shaped earpiece and plugs them in. He listens to the message again and again to pass the time.

I'm on my way to Dock 94, so I'll be there before you. It's good that you're coming now, because I've got a conundrum here that I want you all to poke at. But I won't discuss details on the open channel. See you in a few? I've got beer for everyone, and water for Hawthorne."

"I know Zeyram won't want the distraction while landing, so I'll end the call here. Just know that it's really good to see you all. Kreel, over and out!"

As you study the view through the cameras, the following sight greets you:

The brightly lit docks of Absalom Station are abuzz with activity as travelers bustle by, preparing to board or disembarking from starships bound to or from any of dozens of worlds. Here are brash and swaggering starpilots, scurrying ysoki mechanics, and expectant colonists mingle with enigmatic kasatha mystics, hard-faced asteroid miners, imposing vesk mercenaries, and more. The dock seems a microcosm of the abundance and variety of life in the Pact Worlds.

New arrivals meet friends, loved ones, or business contacts, and are whisked away into the humming activity of daily life on the vast space station. Beyond them, ground crews tend to the docked ships, and dockworkers in mechanized cargo lifters load and unload freight and baggage.

In the thick of the crowd, still it’s not hard to find the sturdy old dwarf, who stands across the dock, waving at the shuttle, holding up a beer bottle. Then Big Jim, Simagus, and Zeyram notice that in amongst the crowd are a number of scruffy looking people taking defensive positions.

Culture 15:
There in fact appear to be two different groups, sporting different gang colors.

As they pull out lasers, the old dwarf reacts, eyes widening, and throwing himself in front of an Yskoki father with three small children in tow. Even over the background noise of the crowd, you can hear Old Steelhand yell, ”What are you lads DOING? There’s children here!!!”

”Stop interfering, old man!” Blue shouts, getting the shot of a lifetime* as he hits Kreel in the neck. The old dwarf crumples silently to the ground as the children behind him cry and people all over dock 94 start screaming.

Then you watch as the scruffy people take pot shots at each other and the crowd, and people go running and screaming everywhere.

Then... the hatch opens, with you all at the door, armed and ready to go!

A sharp tang of ozone hangs in the air—a byproduct of electrical discharges from the docked ships—but underneath, the station's atmosphere has a slightly used aroma. The docking bay's deck plates thrum beneath your feet, though whether it's from the passage of innumerable feet or the vibrations of the station's power conduits and air recycling systems is impossible to say.

They start firing again, a wild shot hitting Hawthorne as the hatch opens!

Zeyram focuses and causes a pinpoint of faint blue light to expand to about three inches diameter. Shortly after that, his armor starts emitting jets of plasma of the same color.

Zeyram focuses his attention on the scruffy man in blue who just shot Kreel. I'm going to remember that one!

He moves forward through the crowd, attempting to get closer to the one who shot Kreel. He has a static arc pistol in one hand, a tactical pistol in another hand, and a knife in the third hand.
