Heroes of the Lost Coast - A Sandpoint Campaign (Inactive)

Game Master Rennick

My PbP, Heroes of the Lost Coast - A Sandpoint Campaign, is in need of two more players. One of our originals bowed out at the beginning and I chose to focus on the players I had, and a second has unfortunately disappeared. The idea behind the game is to make it more sword and sorcery adventure, with mini story arcs, similar to the serials like Conan and John Carter, then say an epic like Lord of the Rings (Though it could always develop differently.

The Campaign can be found HERE

Our three active PCs are:

An Inquisitor
A Bard (Archeologist archetype)
And a Summoner (Synthesist archetype)

I have also removed the Campaign traits they selected to give more variety to the group.

While not the only options, given the party's make up I'm looking for characters who fill roles that aren't present, such as a strong martial character, a healer, or a more traditional arcane character. But I will consider all applications.

Applications will be open for submission until: Saturday 15th at Noon, GMT.

Decision will be made by Monday.

INTRODUCTION

Sandpoint - an ideallic town nestled in a natural cove along the Lost Coast. A Holding in Good standing of Magnimar, Sandpoint is well supplied and thriving community, by all accounts the town is a Paradise. Or at least, it would be - if not for serial killers, strange fires, goblin raids, ghoul infestations and giant attacks - but such is the way of life on the frontier, and all of that lies in the past.

It has been four years since the defeat of the Runelord Karzoug at the hands of Sandpoint's heroes, and the town has been peaceful in those years. Sadly on the Lost, peace is a fragile thing, and a new group of heroes will need to rise up for the town of Sandpoint, and the Lost Coast, or see them fall into darkness.

STYLE

This game will be a sandbox style game, the first one that I've really ever tried to run as a PbP. Thematically this game owes a lot of inspiration to a few different sources, primarily Kingmaker and DM Barcas' "Kingmaker of Korvosa" PbP. (An awesome read for any looking to lurk! I highly reccomend it) The game is planned to take place primarily between Sandpoint and Magnimar, but could end up anywhere in Varisia as it were.

I'm staying vague on how each player will be drawn into the main story, choosing to see what I can come up with based on backgrounds given during this application process, and letting the story develop organically.

I am looking to develop my DMing into a more narrative style and will be expecting the same from my players. Expect a lot of conversation, both between PCs and NPCs. I will be giving experience based on Roleplaying and combat will most likely only be 50% of the game. (sometimes more and sometimes less, depending on the adventure)

CHARACTER CREATION

In yet another idea I'm thiefing from DM Barcas, we'll be using a 20 point buy, with a bonus of 2 points for having one non-neutral alignment axis and 3 points for having two. (Thus, N gets 20; LN, NE, CN, NG get 22, LG, LE, CE, CG get 23.)Dump stats are not appreciated and will need to be justified in character. I am allowing all books from the core ruleset (Core book, APG, Ultimate Magic, Ultimate Combat,) other Paizo sources will be allowed with DM approval. Mostly alternate races will have the hardest time getting approval, just check with me about anything else.

You may select two traits for your character. It's recommended that you select one of these from the campaign traits listed below, however you do not have to and will not be looked poorly upon if you don't. You should avoid campaign traits from other APs, obviously.

If you have no prior posting experience, that's fine. Everyone started like that at some point. I may ask for a writing sample.Take your time to craft a really good application! The more you immerse your character in Golarion, the better. I will be asking questions of everyone (Some more or less than others, don't take that as a sign of anything) to get a good idea of each character and give everyone the best chance I can.

I will leave applications open until Saturday morning, and make my decisions over the weekend.

Good luck to everyone!!

Well, while not a traditional arcane caster, I have been trying to get Tik-Tik into a game. If you're okay with his race, I'd just need to add traits and change his stats to a 22 point buy.

If you aren't okay with his race, I can make a halfling wizard instead.

I'd like to throw my hat into the ring so to speak and put forth either a Rogue(knifemaster/scout combo) or a two weapon fighter.

This sounds awesome! I'll put together a Life Oracle either tonight or tomorrow and post him for your consideration.

Looking forward to seeing submissions.

Dragonborn - Sorry, Paizo sources only, and DM approval needs to be given for any books outside of the core, APG and Ultimate books. And it does state that alternate races would have the hardest time being approved.

Mathpro - Just as a warning, to make sure you have a fair shot, keep in mind the make up of the current players. While we don't have a rogue, our Bard is the archaeologist archetype and will be able to fill a lot of the roles typical for rogues. So if you do choose to submit a rogue, keep that in mind when building him.

Hmm seeing how you guys are level one I think I'm going to stick with my two weapon fighter. My rogue build isn't really good until level 4(+4d8 sneak attack on a charge). I'll have a profile up soon.

Can I use the inner sea world guide because one of the feats I want to take is from it. I want to take Desperate Battler

Here is my submission. If that feat isn't okay with you then I can swap it out with something.

Brief Background:

Toban didn't live in Sandpoint all of his life, just most of it. He was born to a rich family in Magnimar but after his parents mysterious and tragic death he was sent to live with his aunt and uncle in Sandpoint. He showed an aptitude for fighting at a very young age and it was all his aunt could to to keep him from fighting with his cousins and destroying the house with his weapon practice. When he was old enough he joined the town guard and has been promoted several times from with in. His relationship with a few workers at the Pixies Kitten gave him is last position as a guard outside of that establishment. If any of the people who visit that particular establishment get to rough with any of the women Toban is sure to teach them a very painful lesson.

Question regarding starting funds - are you starting with max, rolling, or going with the listed average?

Good question! One I needed to answer in the original recruitment to, :p Use average starting gold.

Toban: The Feats are fine. However your equipment isn't. Starting gold for a fighter is 175 GP, now I know I forgot to say that but even if you rolled 5 6's you should only have 300 gp to start with and your armor alone is worth 550 GP.

Once you work that out comes a flavor question: Why does he have a Nodachi? they aren't common in Varisia. I enjoy the Sephiroth sword as much as the next but that kind of weapon needs an explanation. Maybe it's a simple matter of swapping your campaign trait to the Kaijitsu family trait - it would make sense that Lonjiku's son would have been trained in Tian style weapons - but just having it doesn't jive well.

I took the rich parents trait out of the APG which gives him 900 starting gold.

And I was thinking he could have trained under someone from the Kaijitsu family once he was a guard. Maybe he was a guard at the Rusty Dragon for a little while before getting promoted to the Pixies Kitten and in lue of payment he was given the Nodachi and was trained in its use.

Andrin Valdemar - presented here for your consideration.

No worries, I understand. I will keep trying(in other games of course).

Halfling Evoker on the way.

Is this pathfinder?

Also, would like to throw in Dertrik, Scarnetti enforcer and part time bartender.

I'm new to PbP and Pathfinder, though I have played a lot of D&D3.5. Here is a character I thought might be interesting, Soran the Monk.

Andrin - Excellent! very well put together and I've little to ask. Though just so I'm sure: Even if he doesn't know it as a character, do you see him as an oracle of Erastril? or a different god?

Toban - Thanks for the clarification, Equipment works out fine. That said I would still like some mention in your background on two points: Where does he stand with his family? Was the 900 gp the last of his inheritance? is his family broke now or wrestled away by a greedy in law? And I'd like a mention as to where his more exotic stuff came from. Because of the rich parent trait there's no need to say the Nadochi was given to you, but maybe Ameiko trained you in it? (Or her father or half-brother, though both have been dead for 4 years now) There's an exotic weapon's shop in Sandpoint (I can look it up for you if you don't have Burnt Offerings). I HIGHLY recommend that your breastplate have been made by Das Korvut at the Red Dog Smithy - Sandpoint's blacksmith and a master craftsman, if a little cranky.

Also, Sandpoint's garrison is too small to have postings outside specific buildings. (Especially right now! the latest game update shows they don't have enough to patrol the town right now) so you'll need to rework that a bit. (Personally I like the town guard aspect, but if you're married to the idea of the Pixie, maybe he's a bouncer?)

More notes to come later! sorry everyone but I'm rather sleepy.

DM Rennick wrote:

Rennick:
I'm currently of two minds on this subject. The first idea I had, was that it was neither Erastil or Gozreh who saved Andrin from his dip in the drink but actually Desna. Andrin would be unaware of this for quite a long while, and it could be really fun for him to come to the realization that he was one of Desna's favored.

The other idea I had, is that it wasn't a deity's intervention but rather an entity from the Positive Energy Plane. This entity, for inscrutable reasons, would have been a observer of the Valdemar line and for other unknownable reasons decided to intervene during Andrin's drowning. And the way in which the entity saved Andrin was by indwelling him.

I like the 1st idea because of the interplay between the deities and Andrin's evolving faith.

I like the 2nd idea because of how easily it explains his curse (it's the entity speaking more than Andrin at those times) and it also has a lot of interesting character development potential.

In the end, I could just jam the two together and say that the entity was set to watch over the Valdemars by Desna.

If one idea would fit better into the tale, I'd be happy with either one or an amalgam of the two.

I was actually thinking of a bouncer originally but then I took the idea of wielding reach weapons and ran with it. But I agree being a bouncer would make much more sense and it would allow him much more hands on...guarding of the women he was protecting. See my amended background below for my proposed solution.

Amended background:

Toban didn't live in Sandpoint all of his life, just most of it. He was born to a rich family in Magnimar but after his parents mysterious and tragic death he was sent to live with his aunt and uncle in Sandpoint. Before he was shipped off he given his inheritance, 900 gold pieces, but it wasn't to be touched until he turned 18. The rest of his parents money was given to his aunt and uncle to help them handle the burden of raising him.

His life in Sandpoint was a simple one but he soon adjusted to live in the sleepy port town. Things in town were much quieter than what he was used to in Magnimar but his busy home life helped stave off boredom. He now lived with 2 older cousins and 3 younger cousins. The two older cousins were female and were seen as the black sheep of the family, not really getting much attention with the 3 younger ones running around. Adding Toban to the mix didn't help things much but the girls soon found having Toban around had its perks. He would easily provide a distraction so they could go off and do their own thing.

The younger three cousins(all boys) were a handful the say the least and it was Toban's job to help keep them out of trouble. He showed an aptitude for fighting at a very young age and it was all his aunt could to to keep him from fighting with his younger cousins and destroying the house. "BOYS TAKE IT OUTSIDE" could often be heard being shouted from inside the house at many hours of the day.

When Toban was old enough he cashed in his inheritance on a rather fine set of armor and his Nodachi which he had seen demonstrated by the Tain family in town. Wanting to fight just like them he started to train along side Ameiko's brother. The two of them became rather close and he took it hard when he was killed a few years ago. Once his training was complete he joined the town guard and has been working their during the day.

His older cousins started making a living as workers at the Pixies Kitten and after a few incidents with rough customers Toban started working their at night for free as a bouncer, just to keep an eye on his cousins. They protested at first but their parents insisted that Toban be around when things get out of hand. And Toban doesn't really mind since it gives him something to do with his spare time.

Hi I would like to submit Hashar my Crusader(Cleric of Gurom), the Half-orc town guard of sandpoint. He plays like a martial/tank role and a minor healer since he has the diminished spellcasting. Though I will probably mix him up with a few levels in either fighter or barbarian in later levels. All of his information is in his Alias.

Thanks for letting me submit Hashar, I had fun designing I hope you pick him and best of luck to everybody!

Endrin - Alright sounds good, I already know which of them I prefer. Would you rather be told, or find out in game, if you're accepted?

Toban - Coming along nicely. A couple of points for your consideration:

- Who is the Tain family? did you mean the Kaijitsu family?

- Being friends with Tsuto is an interesting choice. As a half-elf son to a human family, he was obviously an illegitimate child and his father's great shame. However he had a good relationship with his sister, and lived at Turandarok Academy. Four years ago Tsuto was one of the ringleaders behind the Goblin attack, his sister's kidnapping, and his father's death.

- With that in mind, During the events of Rise of the Runelords, what was Toban up to? (Particularly the Goblin raid and the Giant attack.)

Dertrik - I'd like you to rethink the connection to both Scarnetti and the Sczarni. The Sczarni because they aren't a family, but rather a syndicate of Varisian crime families. And I can honestly say that if you were one of them, Ameiko would never hire you.

Scarnetti I'm vetoing because our Inquisitor Daemon already has a very similar plothook and I'd rather not overlap.

And lastly, I know it seems like a minor issue, but try not to use the word Gypsy, Since starting my current degree I've made friends with some Romanians and they take it as a pretty bad racial slur, so I'm trying to avoid it in my games.

Soran - Welcome to the game! First time players are always welcome, after all it's everyone's first post sometime. That said, your background doesn't link your character to Sandpoint or the Lost Coast in any way. I'd like you to figure out why he's in Sandpoint, what he wants, all that stuff. Just saying "He's off to see the World" Well then what makes him stay here?

Hashar - I'll have notes for you in a few minutes, just need to go look through some rulebooks first.

SUBMISSIONS ARE NOW CLOSED - thank you all for applying.

Hashar - Okay, so we've seen the event that connects him to god, but according to the archetype's description Crusaders are "The Militant arm of the Church" So what brought him into the organization of Gorum's faith, is he still actively training in it? The character is a good one, and well designed, however right now he reads more like an Inquisitor, and the game has one of those, so I'm worried about overlapping.

I'll give the rest of the day for people to respond and will make my decision tomorrow.

Those selected may need to be patient for their entrances.

Yes I meant the Kaijitsu family but couldn't remember how to spell it last night as I was writing my post...sorry. He had just started working on the Pixies kitten when the first goblin attack happened and he was part of the forces that helped fight them off. When he figured out Tsuto's involvement in drawing them there and trying to kidnap his sister Toban was devastated. Being so close to Tsuto he knew the feelings Tsuto had towards his father but he didn't think it would have worked out the way it did. To this day its still very hard for him to talk about the events of that night. The ogre attack served as a good chance for him to get out some of the anger he had towards Tsuto. He had the highest kill count amongst the guards.

Oooo - good question! I think it would be more fun to find out in game. Andrin is still trying to come to grips with it (he's pretty even tempered, so it would have been many months since he'd been stressed enough to find himself speaking in tongues), and I think figuring it out as Andrin does offers a lot potential awesomeness.

Good luck to everyone! Thanks again for the consideration =)

DM Rennick wrote:

Answer:
I seeked out the church of the Lord in Iron after he was defeated by the Captain of the guard. The Captain showed him that raw skill can get you only so far, but he would never tell him that. So Hashar seeked out the local Temple of Gorum and they started to forge his skills in the relgion and the blade he wielded. Since he was keener to prove his martial prowess over his divine prayers, he was choosen to be a cursader. He is actively promoting the temple, he tells for his opponents that survive there fight and tells they have potential and if they wish to defeat him then go train with clerics of Gorum. The training at the temple awarded him his feat in weapon focus(greatsword) and he still learning religion itself and it is taking time since he's been a slave with no hopes most of his life so he will put a rank into it next level instead.

anwser:
I can see that ,but I am playing him more like a warrior then a cleric. I see me and FuriaRi0t's inquistor plays in both combat and roleplaying completely different then how Hashar would be, Daemon seems to be more of a talker intelligent detective type, while Hashar is a in your face brawler that wants to find a worthy challenge. So I really don't see those two characters overlapping but actually having some more intresting interactions with each other and npcs. As I told you in the begining he's more fighter then cleric so he will be multi-classing with fighter later on so letting the inquistor taking a lead over him with magic. But all in all its up to you, let me know if you got any other questions.

I have changed Soran's background. I'm still trying to learn a little more about the Pathfinder world, I didn't realize at first how far away I had my character starting from Sandpoint. I was also wondering what the "Outlander" trait was? I couldn't find it on the online PRD.

Thanks for the consideration!

@Soran:

Traits in the PRD are in the Advance players guide, under new rules. Just scroll down until you get to the Traits section and then your golden. Hope this helps Soran!

The decision has been made, though it wasn't an easy one.

Our two newest players are Andrin Valdemar, and Toban (Who needs a character profile and a last name) If the two of you would kindly pop on over to the campaign's OOC page and introduce yourself, we will get you involved as soon as we can.

Thank you to everyone who applied, if you have any questions I will be happy to answer them. I wish I had more slots available because there's a few I wish I could have chosen.

Thank you for choosing me and I've posted in the OOC.

Congrats you two! Hope you all have fun!
