Eduard Petrov |
Eduard climbs out of the spider tunnel and casts Prestidigitation to clean himself up. "Lead the way. Though I imagine that we should be careful as this is likely some sort of gathering place or waystation for these people."
Alexander Orlovsky |
Alexander waves a hand as the webs clinging to his boots fall away, then mounts his own horse and looks around, Well, it appears we're done here. He frowns slightly as he notices the tears in his pants, but breaks into a smirk as he says, Looks like I'll have to sew these up again. He laughs as he kicks his horse forward.
Lead the way, Soren.

Know Geo: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (11) + 7 = 18
Know Nature: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (16) + 7 = 23
Survival: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (16) + 7 = 23
Soren takes the paper, and starts following the map, as it were.
The Winds of Fate |
Soren is able to decipher the markings on the crude map and leads the group on a ride through the gently rolling, lightly wooded hillside. After spending much of the morning mapping and dealing with spiders, it's nearing dusk when you ride up on an old lightning-struck oak tree stands atop a low hill that Soren thinks is where the "X" is on the map.
Soren Bowman |
Soren approaches the chair, with his bow drawn and an arrow loosely nocked.
We should stick together, probably. We don't know what this place even is...
Perception: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (8) + 7 = 15
Alexander Orlovsky |
Alexander rides up and looks around, Take your time and look around. There doesn't seem to be anyone here, at least. He then dismounts and starts searching for signs that anyone has been there recently.
Taking 20 on the search for a...20.
The Winds of Fate |
The area around you all seems rather empty. Aside from the lightning struck tree, you don't see much other than the faint signs of fire several years past. Perhaps one started by the lightning that once struck the tree.
20+ perception or survival get you: Poking about the base of the once blasted tree, you realize that the earth has recently been disturbed. With a bit of effort, you are able to dig down a couple feet into the earth and find a bundle wrapped up in an oiled, heavy leather cloak. Opening up the wrapped up cloak, you find: a masterwork dagger, a wand, a heavy silver ring and a spellbook.
Alexander Orlovsky |
Loot list updated. I didn't add the spellbook as I expect Eduard is going to hold on to it for a while.
Alexander attempts to identify the wand.
Spellcraft: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (17) + 7 = 24
Very interesting. Seems we have a magical stick and a...spellbook. I suppose these might be useful to you Eduard? And a rather large ring. He flips the ring in the air, catching it, And heavy. He then flips it over to Thaliar, What do you think? Worth something?
Thaliar Medevin |
Sorry for the prolonged silence. Last week turned into a bit of a mess with deadlines and a funeral so I had very little time to really put something together
Thaliar had been silent during their trip. Soren had been great with the map so help wasn't needed there and the spider nest seemed to be emptied. He had tried to see if he could bring one of the young spider's corpses but the thing was unwieldy and it would probably rot away before he had the time or the tools to preserve it.
Perception for the dirt: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (6) + 7 = 13
Thaliar looks at the ring, "Definitely. Let me see it, need to check if there are any markings on the thing. We might figure out who made it and maybe even who originally owned it. The story could make it worth more to the right people." He walked over to Alexander to take the ring from him and see what it looked like.
"I'd like to take a look at the book as well. Sometimes it's possible to turn one of those magic formulas into a formula I can use to bottle the spell."
The Winds of Fate |
The spellbook is in Draconic.
Sadly, Eduard can quickly see that most of the book is water damaged. Obviously the bandit who buried it didn't understand how to properly care for books.
You can make out five spells though: identify, mage armor, reduce person,
silent image, and unseen servant.
The silver ring is a wide band, fit for a man's hand. No markings or inscriptions can be seen on it.
Soren Bowman |
Soren searches a little wider around the area, looking for tracks, or anything out of the ordinary, before sitting to rest with the others.
Eduard Petrov |
Eduard holds up the spellbook after studying it. "I can make out a few spells. Fortunately I read Draconic, but it seems unlikely that any human would keep their spellbook in such a language. Still, it will be some time before I can copy all of these spells over."
He then goes about getting some rest at his appointed time.
The Winds of Fate |
You arrange your watches, set up your camp and settle in for a nights rest. A rather peaceful nights rest since nothing chooses to venture near your campsite.
The sun soon rises and you are looking at another beautiful day. Do you wish to venture further out to explore or return back to Oleg's to rest or drop off anything. you are currently about 26 south, south-west of the post
Alexander Orlovsky |
Agreed, Alexander responds as he packs, We have plenty of supplies. Might as well stay out a bit more and keep mapping.
He straightens and throws his pack up on the horse. Soren, any ideas on where to head next?
Soren Bowman |
Soren replies while packing up his own supplies onto his mare.
I suppose we continue with the spiral. I see no reason to return to Oleg's for a day or so, and we haven't encountered any threats that are entirely overbearing. If you like I'll take us back to where we left off, since our little treasure hunt took us slightly off course.
He hops into the saddle, and lays his bow across his lap.
Radomir Shax |
Very well, but I shall still take the last watch when we need.
He walks out of the next and packs up his things. Once Czernabog is ready, he mounts and follows the group as they continue mapping.
The Winds of Fate |
Your group swings West first, so that you can map out more territory without heading back the way you came and tramping over already mapped areas.
The ground here seems a bit more rocky and with less vegetation, this causes you to be rather cautious with your mounts since you don't want them to break any legs.
I'll take a Perception check from everyone while you are exploring this area.
The Winds of Fate |
While you are cautiously crossing near a particularly rocky crag that rises from the hills, you notice something interesting. At the crag’s base is an overgrown 5-foot-wide crack that leads down 20 feet to a 30-foot-diameter cave and as the sun hits the opening at just the right angle, you think you see something glinting with the light. Investigating the small cave, you notice that the cave wall directly across from the entrance sparkles slightly where the sun hits it.
A DC 20 Appraise or Knowledge
(dungeoneering) check is enough to
recognize this as a vein of gold.
Alexander Orlovsky |
Knowledge (Dungeoneering): 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (12) + 8 = 20
Alexander dismounts and approaches the cave cautiously. When he draws near he runs a finger over the one of the veins. Interesting. Gold. He steps back and nods over to Soren, I suggest we don't put this on our maps...just in case. But we should definitely take note of the area in order to find it again.
