Tactical Map

Three Hammerhand dwarves sit in the inn with tall ale mugs, with a small keg sitting in the middle of their table. (they clearly brought their own...)

Gromff,
You recognize Thane Slagspatter, one of the high council members of Khaurak-Khozil. He sits next to two of his house soldiers. He turns and greets you, "Gromff m'boy! By the rocks below, how're ye?! Your fam'ly speaks highly o'you, bein' out fightin' the good fight n'all." He goes on for sometime, sharing news (very little of consequence, other than they repelled a fairly weak invasion-attempt by a slew of devils) and asking you about your travels. After some conversation, Xavius and Littledragon enter the inn.

"So. Ye with the glowy eyes, ye must be the fallen angel we been hearin' 'bout. We got a magic message from someone here in Archdale, talkin' about a meetin', a council gathering or some such thing. The message also shared news that legions in the south are being recalled north. We 'preciate the updates, but we be here to witness this council."

Xavius informs the dwarves that the council has met already and that there is disagreement on how to proceed. The angel then looks to Gromff and says to Slagspatter, "Gromff and his friends have taken a quest upon themselves to keep up the good fight, and it seems that their initiatives were foretold. I believe he and his companions are the best hope we have right now."

Slagspatter gets a gleam in his eye. "'Course he's gonna. That's what good dwarven stock is fer! Well we just arrived, so I think we'll stay the night. Gromff, ye want a lift? We could fit ye on a griffon if'n ye be so inclined."

So far Roland never really thought about flying, but when he saw the griffons his mind suddenly wanted to try it. Maybe it was the amulet bringing him closer to the animals, or maybe just curiosity. He almost didn't notice Gromff walking into the inn while approached the griffons, slowly, trying no to startle them. He imagined he would be bitten for sure. Knock it off, Roland! You barely know how to ride a horse, less to say something that have wings!

Indeed, his best maneuver on top of a horse would be falling, but maybe, just maybe, he had a knack for riding griffons, dragons and other weird stuff in the sky. It would be certainly a thrilling experience. And of course, as common sense was not something he was strong at, he approached the creatures to caress one of them.

To Miro and the rest of the group he mentions again what would be necessary. "Two things I know for sure. First, we found the girl and the gem on our road north, if that's not a sign we were supposed to bring them here, I don't know what is. Second, we cannot go around carrying the kid and the gem. I don't know about you guys, but I've been in several fights, and I'm alive so far because I didn't have anything to worry about, nor anything to lose aside from my life. Bringing important stuff into the battle will draw your attention, and then you lose. Plus, there's the risk of losing it to the enemy."

"So, my point is, if you're gonna take the girl and the gem away from this place, you're going without me. Damn, we could have actually done something worth our time, instead of remaining here and trying to keep a freaking secret."

"I concur with Roland. These rings, finding all these things on your way, the priest having the same symbol, all of it points to a divine effort to lead us here. The question is, do we entrust the girl and gem to Xavius and Littledragon?" He ponders for a moment, holding his hands out. "It seems we have little choice. If we stay here to keep them safe, then the other two gems and harbingers remain lost to us."

I am not around but I think I should remind you guys that we at least need the gem cause it will make us aware of the corresponding Harbinger when near. Also, I really doubt Aersensi will let us leave her here.

Gromff talks with his clan and Thane for a while about his adventures so far. He leaves out any big words like Harbinger's but is also sufficiently awe-inspiring. Imps, hell-scarred, hell hounds, and a wyvern are plenty nasty stuff.

"Leave it ta Griffon Riders ta be late," he comments in jest though his tone remains neutral. "Preciate the offer but we're headin back south ta look inta a green dragon that's moved inaa the area. Might have somethin we need. Either way, wouldn't want melted griffon on me conscious. Its a largish green."

”Knock it off.” says the mage ”Who is the one talking about important stuff for everyone to hear?” she says looking at Miro and Roland, and trying to make then notice they are still out in the open surrounded by strangers.
”And Roland don’t go about thinking you are something important whatsoever.” she says as a matter of fact ”Threating to leave the company if your wishes are not met is just dumb. Thane Slagspatter turns the spout on his keg and pours Gromff a rich smelling, dark and earthy mug of dwarven ale.

Catcher,
With your knowledge of dragons, and what knowledge you have of this particular dragon, (namely, its size, if not much else) you know that this dragon is almost certainly beyond your ability to defeat in a combat situation.

Being pissed off by Catcher is normal, and the barbarian doesn't even care anymore, basically ignoring what she said to address Gromff, whose opinion he somehow values more. But he didn't forget the ice bucket challenge, yet. "I trusted you, when we met. We trusted Meldara, when we met her. We trusted a freaking snake and have been wearing her magical items since then. We trusted completely strangers inside Sweetwaters. And we didn't have anything aside from our lives on the line. Now that we have something important to help in the war, you don't trust anyone? We're gonna keep that secret forever and never trust anyone else? Don't you see how keeping that secret is hampering us?"

Then he makes kind of an act, but his voice does not change, demonstrating his pitiful skill in acting. "Oh hey guys, there are some folk who can help us kill the dragon! Oh, wait, we can trust them, because we've got a freaking secret to keep!"

Roland is getting angry. "The Silvermane already heard what they should not, if you wanna keep the girl safe you need to find someone who can actually do that, and that's not us. If they put their hands on her before Xavius and Littledragon, they will kill her. All of us can try to protect her, but they are the strongest faction around here, and we won't last long against countless soldiers! And guess what? They are gonna take the girl to sacrifice sooner right after, and tell everyone we are traitors because we were hiding her so mankind would lose the war!"

"Try to get out of here with the girl, do you think they are not gonna send an army after us?" His voice is increasing, and as he finishes the next phrase he's almost shouting! "And no one is gonna be on your side, cause they don't freaking know what you're doing!" He turns his back to them, and leaves the place they are at, while drawing his Earthbreaker and holding it in one hand on the way out, hoping to find some trouble.

The mage could not believe how someone could be so thick. Dozens of things rushed in her mind, and unbelievably, she had reason for everything.

Me? I’m sure he thinks I’m not capable of anything, and that’s what I want him thinking.
Meldara? she was helping refugees, why would she be an enemy? Help the weak, only to harm them latter? No one is that crazy.
The snake? It knew me and my past, I trusted myself, not the snake, even tho I really like it.
Strangers in sweet waters? He was not there, he did not saw their faces and they helped us first, they were the first ones to trust us!

That is what she was planning to say, chasing after him. She could say a lot more, but she knew better, she was better, and she would not go after that hotheaded dastard to, once more, try make him understand things. She was tired of his stubbornness.

We are five...and can not do everything on our own. As we find more...items...and valuables...we will be increasing their risk as we continue to risk ourselves to gain more things to aid us in this war effort." He looks at the two for a long moment. Instead I was disappointed to find that there are those amoung the other factions who want to do things their way with the rest of us be damned." she says with a edge to her voice.

The griffon turns its predator's gaze directly at you. Staring down the length of its beak, it awaits your hand with attentive patience. Feeling your own clumsiness, you press on confidently. Seeing the beak up close, you realize that this creature could remove several fingers--if not your entire hand--with a single bite, and yet the creature yields to your caress.
The facial feathers are glossy and cool to the touch, but pulse with a burning warmth just underneath. The creature makes a low warble that gradually changes into a purr of contentment.

"Now there be a brave man!" One of the newly arrived dwarves emerges from the inn, wiping beer-foam from his beard. "They be trained fer transport as well as batt'el, don't ye doubt. Ye be Gromff's companion, aye? Fancy a quick ride?" The dwarf walks up to the griffon right beside Roland, reaches into a large saddlebag and pulls out a considerable haunch of meat-likely from a deer or some similar animal. He hands the meat to Roland.
"Offer it to him, then climb on the saddle. I'll come with ye, if ya like."

Roland, you see the saddle is wide enough to fit you, and that there is ample room for the dwarf to ride behind you, just behind the saddle.

I'm not very good at riding, but I certainly wanna try it!" If the dwarf does not complain he will take the piece of meat, offer it and ride on! To the skies and beyond!

Of course, he won't go far, since he basically should NOT be doing this. A round-trip over the camp would suffice.

The mighty barbarian feeds the haunch to the griffon who hungrily accepts the gift. Dropping it to the ground, the beast pins the meat with a claw and dips his magnificent eagle head to its meal, pulling the flesh away bit by bit. The dwarf nudges Roland.

The beast seemed to barely notice as Roland put a foot into a stirrup and mounted it. After receiving some brief instruction, the dwarf climbed on and sat behind Roland. After the griffon finished its meal, Roland cracked the reins and yelled "Cleep!", which is the dwarf for fly.

The following few minutes were exhilarating. The biting cold air was ignored in favor of the hot blood pumping through the veins. The camp city is organized and vast, yet it looked small somehow from several hundred feet up. After a couple circuits, the beast is guided back to the Greenshingles and lands next to his two feathered friends.

"We shouldn't go traipsing through enemy territory, getting into dangerous situations, with a young girl in tow. And we can't leave her here without telling Xavius and Littledragon about her importance, or they won't prioritize her safety. Does anybody doubt that between the two of them, with the magics they exhibited, they would have any trouble taking the girl from us if they so chose? Roland is outside having the best time of his life. For a moment he thought about how would it be to ride a dragon, but the current trip was already scary enough. Well, someone could say it gave the Barbarian the shivers. But of course he would deny it. Anyway, when he came back he felt kinda tired, and the owner of the world. His mind now refreshed and less angry, he remembered to ask for the man's name, and thanks him for the experience. "If you need anything, just say so man. I owe you one."

He does not come back into the tent yet, hoping that, without his presence to spoil their conversation, Miro could push some reason into the kid and Gromff's mind.

”Well, maybe, but he has different kind of magic than me and you.” she says sadly ”We draw power from the energy around us, manipulating it and converting to make it do what we want. Littledragon magic is bestowed onto him from his faith in his god. By believing in his god, he can call forth the power to perform those miracles.”

She does not look to the others as she continues "Anyway, we are not leaving today, and maybe not even tomorrow. How about we go ask the dwarfs if we can ride the Griffons?"

When Roland comes back they are finally saying their goodbyes to the girl, who's crying, as girls always do. "Don't take it personal, Kid. We want to protect you, that's why you can't go with us. You also have a job here, but it's your choice if you're gonna do it or not. You know you have to, but don't want it, right? That's why that cave makes you sad, I guess..."

Roland,
The dwarf's says "The name's Morf Stoutarm, and I be glad to call ye a friend. Might be I need yer hammer fightin' by me side some day."

A little fast-forwarding here.

You fill the rest of your day with discussion, some drinks with the dwarves, talks with Xavius and Littledragon. Xavius scoffs at the notion that he be a caretaker to the elf child but Littledragon seems pleased to look after her.

Sense Motive DC 20:
It is very possible that Littledragon has gleaned from your discussions that Aersensi is more than she appears, and he may believe that you believe she is a Harbinger. The man shows no sign of ill-will, however. You believe he will look after her to the best of his ability.

The three dwarves of Khaurak-Khozil offer to give a ride to everyone in the party, though it will be a bit cramped on the griffon-back. These particular griffons are quite powerful and a bit larger than is typical, and so the dwarves inform you that carrying an extra rider or two(on each griffon) will not be a problem. In this discussion, the dwarves mention that they're willing to fly you almost anywhere, and that taking you as far as the river (so that you can find the dragoncult/dragon) is easy. In game terms, this means they'd be willing to fly you as far south as you want to go. (IE to the Untamed Wilds, or to the bog where The Coven reside, etc) Keep in mind this is a one-way trip, as they'll be leaving after they drop you off.

Roland is happy for not having to walk all the way back to Sweetwaters. He is also pretty satisfied with the absence with the kid in their group. Being the second time he flew in a griffon, he is getting the grip on it. "One day I'm gonna buy one of this for myself, you know?"

Miro nods at the elven girl, smiling. "You'll be in good hands."

He turns back to everyone else, an eager look on his face. "So, where to, everybody?"

Let me know if your plans:
-Are you taking the dwarves' offered transportation?
-Are you still planning on going to dragon or going elsewhere?
If yes to the dragon, provide me some details such as:
-how far from the supposed waterfall home of the dragon do you want to be dropped off?
-Are you looking first for cult members or the dragon itself?
-Any other details

Still want to go to the dragon! Definitely want to take the dwarves' offer of transport. I think a couple miles from the waterfall should be ok. Would like to look for cult members to get a better layout of the inside.

"I'll miss you too!" Tessandriel whispers in Aersensi's ear.

"If anyone is mean to you let us know and Gromff will sit on them!" she says with a grin.

I want to take out the Dragon Cult. I am for removing the members first, then going after the dragon. I am also in favor of taking the transportation offered by the dwarves. I'm not sure how far away, at least 2 miles and behind complete cover. Their senses are the stuff of legends.

I am pretty sure the dragon is our next stop and I don't mind taking griffons. I didn't think they could handle so many people. I am not sure how to approach this though. The cult seems evil but the dragon didn't outright kill us that one time and got mad when his tributes were harmed. Guess we'll see when we get there. Onwards.

"Glad that's settled then. Say no to strangers lass. Now how do we approach a dragon we can't kill and a cult stealing kids?" he muses to himself. He walks off to find the Dwarves again and see if they can get a ride south to just outside Sweet water.

Packing your bags goes quickly. Having only been in Archdale for a couple days, you hardly had time to get settled in. It somehow seemed much longer than a couple of days though. With a new insights into your quest and a corresponding weight on your shoulders, the party brings their bags laden with fresh provisions to the porch of the Greenshingles Inn where the dwarf griffon riders await you.

After bundling up with winter furs and after a light breakfast (Thane Slagspatter recommends against a heavy meal on a day filled with flying) everyone's gear is strapped onto the elaborate saddlebag harnesses. Roland rides with Stoutarm, Gromff and Miro ride with Slagspatter, and Catcher and Tessandriel ride with the third dwarf (who has yet to reveal his name.) When everyone is seated as securely as possible, Roland cries out with a boyish grin..."Cleep!"

Whoosh!

The griffons take to the air with a powerful leap and beat their wings to lift their burdened chassis into the sky, though your escorts assure you that they've borne heavier loads many times before. Bitter cold air chills your faces instantly as the wind blasts into you, though fortunate sunlight has finally broken through the murky cloud cover of late, doing a fair job of warming your skin. From your height, as far as the eye can see, you observe all the snow has turned to red and maroon-- a filthy consequence of the hellish rain-- and a bitter reminder of what you're up against.

Stoutarm turns to Roland, "Here. Take a pull of this, it'll 'elp ward off the cold." He hands you a sturdy metal flask emblazoned with a muscular flexing arm, emphasizing an over-sized bicep.

Not long after getting airborne the griffons seem to fly effortlessly, using air currents to their advantage and gliding down the geographic incline that the giantess Lochlanisha previously escorted you up. You see a contingent of soldiers, hard-marching in columns of cavalry and ground troops, heading away from Archdale. They bear the standard of the Silvermane. In hindsight, the Silvermane camp looked anything but deserted when you left, so they must have quite a standing force if they can afford to send off this contingent.

More to come.

In what direction are the soldiers going please?

"Since there might be many dragons outside of their waterfall, I think a days ride from the waterfall would be safer for the griffons, wouldn't it? Just in case, you know..." But it seems not much can make Roland angry these days. "So, guys, I don't know about you, but, the prospect of infiltrating and killing those many dragons is not particularly favorable for us. If we can't approach the dragon, we should either kill their minions, or maybe we could, you know, take their offer and join them, so we can learn more and look for the candies, if there's any in there." Obviously you all know he's not really talking about candies.

Later on while they were flying he wasn't really cold, since it doesn't affect him that much, but you not pass a drink if it's offered to us, specially if it's dwarven. He tries it without complain.

"Dragons don't consort with their own often lad. Probably only the one but they'll be a lot o minions. Doubt we could do much more than tickle it either. Lets just scout the place out and see what happens first."

Tactical Map

Roland, the Silvermane contingent are travelling east-southeast, back along the trail that you all approached Archdale from.

After several hours on griffon-back, some of you are getting used to the sensation of riding on a flying beast, while others might remain in a state of pure terror. Each of you will have to imagine how your PC would react to flying. Gromff, we can assume that you've ridden griffons several times in your life, but their use in the dwarven citadel is typically restricted to hauling goods up/down the mountain and for carrying warriors into battle. Flying wasn't something most people got to do in their lifetimes, and it had a tendency to either heighten anxieties about heights and falling or invoke the purest form of excitement and wonder.

Your hosts land the creatures several times to stop for a drink and rest their wings, each time giving you all a chance to stretch your legs and regain your bearings. It is remarkable how much land you can cover when mud, snow, gravel, and geographic obstacles no longer get in the way. You have passed out of the foothills and have reentered the rolling green hills and tree clusters that constitutes the countryside surrounding Sweetwaters. The griffons flew south-southeast for most of your journey until the Great River came into view. Turning parallel you travel east toward Sweetwaters.

Seeing a series of small villages dotting the river's edge, the dwarves put down on the outskirts of one picked at random. Slagspatter says, "I don'na know this place, but we be about 25 miles west o' Sweetwaters. From yer description, this sounds about where ye wanted ta be." He and his kin dismount and help unstrap everyone's bags and gear. After some handshakes and a few hugs, they remount the flying beasts and take to the air, flying northeast toward the mountains they call home. "Farewell me new friends! Look after Gromff for meh!" Moments later they're nothing more than shrinking dots on the horizon.

More to come. Feel free to chat/RP until I get up next post.

From high in the air Gromff could close his eyes and pretend he was back home standing atop the mountain. It brought a pleasant nostalgic feeling to him. Upon landing, he bid farewell to his kin and looked out towards the village. "What say we camp here and send the talkative one in ta see what's what?" he asks of the group.

About how far from our destination are we, by chance?

Miro grins almost the entire time they are up in the air, laughing to begin with. The Halfling feels exhilarated as they soar through the air, his stomach lurching with every draft of air and every turn of the beast he rides.

When they finally lands, he hops off, a little wobbly but in high spirits. He waves a cheerful good-bye to the kind dwarves who brought them, then turns to his companions. "Aye, a bit of fun that was, but now to work!" He winks, grin back in place. "Anything in particular you guys want me to ask about?"

"The Dragon obviously. Bet they seen the giant lizard at some point. Might get them talkin about other strange things."

Just realized the bard has as much Ac as me. That's...disheartening.

Miro,

You could say that your destination hasn't yet been pinpointed. You and the group remember the captured cultist Jillian saying the following about the dragon's lair:

"My name is Jillian. I am from the village of Murss; a village of no consequence. It is an outlying community of fishermen and farmers who live upriver from Sweetwaters. Rumors sprouted up in the village about a dragon-- the sleeping dragon from the old tales-- a dragon that burst from the ground at a neighboring town called Granite Quarry, a few miles upriver from Murss."

"I and several others joined right away and made our pilgrimage to a large waterfall where the great green had made its home..."

"The waterfall is not far from my village, you can't miss it. King's Crown falls on the Great River is easy to find. Follow the river west from Sweetwaters and you can't miss it."
