Hey guys, I'm very sorry to say so, but I have to bow out of this game. My workload has just grown increasingly time consuming, and I don't want to keep you waiting for me everytime. In the end, I should have not accepted the offer to restart the campaign. I had joined several other campaigns in the meanwhile and I should have known that I couldn't manage to add another one. But I was hoping to do it, until my work became hectic.
I hope you will have fun and I wish you all the best. I'm sure that in the future we will get to play together again!

My mom came into town for Mother's Day here in the U.S., so I admit I didn't login to post and check on the boards. Sorry for not getting the next round up before all that.
@Varian: I'm sorry to see you go. I can definitely understand your situation as I have also been n your shoes. If anything changes, let me know.
@Everyone else: I think this leaves us short a divine caster. Do you feel Avrora will be enough, or should I set up a recruitment for a divine based class?

I think we can manage honestly - its not an AP with massive time pressure so we can easily take long breaks to heal naturally between encounters. I think the only time it would really matter would be in major dungeon crawls and there will be enough wands etc available to buy that I think we can cover it...
Avrora Vikta |
Yea, I couldn't say one way or another. I can say that warpriest casting is pretty "selfish" in that there's an incentive to convert what would be group buffs into self only swift casts, so we'll be missing out on some support magic. But as Isabel suggests, healing with wands usually suffices.
Galen Mistbringer |
I guess my first thought is that it would be more fun for Avrora and the rest if we had a true divine caster in the mix...not just for healing but because I think those channels and spells are going to matter later. It might be good to mix it up a bit at this point, but that's my initial thoughts today on it...

1) Sorry to see you go, Varian, but I understand.
2) I think we will be fine. I worry more about group interplay and RP more than fight functionality. Besides, much of Hell's Rebels was supposed to be more than smash and grab, right?
Phineas Aceron |
Sorry to see you go Varian!
Mechanically, I think we should probably be ok with CLW wands and some divine support magic from Avrora. We have a lot of spell access across our characters, I think we'll be able to patch any holes from missing a full divine caster.
How do we want to work Varian out of the storyline though? Just have him poof, bot him until he can be 'disappeared' in a story-convenient way, or something else? How we might want to handle that will also tie into how it will impact our RP opportunities as well, since there's a little more to play off of if he's abducted under unknown circumstances than if we just decide he never existed, for example.

Recruitment mission goes wrong? Tries to chase down a lead of the Silver Dragons reforming somewhere else in Cheliax?
Varian Tanessen |
Hey GM, could you please mark Varian as inactive?
Spirit of Pinvendor |
Unless you desire something else, I had planned to just have Varian leave the city on a mission to seek outside support. If Giuseppe Capriati returns to the game, it would be an easy reinsertion for the most part. If we leave the Varian character involved as an NPC, the "attrition" rules and the danger to rebel team rules could see him inadvertently killed by some bad random rolls. I'd prefer to avoid that with a PC's character personally. :)
Spirit of Pinvendor |
I imagine we may have some further questions and interest in clarifications before the deep dive into rebellion leadership. We'll need to be making a lot of rolls and I will have to start monitoring a slew of things behind the scenes.
I want to start off with that there are quite a lot of potential obstacles, and there several which could involve random rolls killing off your NPC rebel henchmen and city NPCs. A number of conditions which will hamper your progress are all possible, some of which could stack negative modifiers pretty quickly, so I will be honest and admit I may choose to alter some effects. This may mean that some effects will not be consistent as I try to balance the actual rolls with your fun. I don't want to let a couple of unfortunate die rolls result in reducing the rebellion's growth to a crawl until someone "finally" rolls high enough to clear a heap of negative modifiers to your rebellion checks.
But this will go both ways, if your rolls are just breezing you through, I may choose to add a couple of complications just to keep it interesting as too easy has the chance of making you disinterested.
Feel free to roleplay it up with each other and NPCs. Feel free to use spoilers liberally to keep track of these outside events and if at any time you feel that something you're RPing would affect non-spoilered events that are occurring, please call it to my attention, so I can pause or even bring that event to the forefront.
Hell's Rebels has the opportunity to be a very event filled "closed" sandbox, and PbP the unique chance to exploit the nature of managing several scenes at once using spoilers. I will do my best to keep up, but I encourage you to also leverage this to RP with one another, and if you would like to introduce an NPC that another PC may want to interact with or "take over" an NPC for fun, please let me know (probably in a PM), and I will keep track.
One of the mechanisms in Hell's Rebels that is important is the population number...which you may have gathered from Crusty adding it to the top header. So any and all NPCs encountered can be or become important, and I will be happy to exploit accommodate that naturally.
Whew! Questions? Concerns? :D
Galen Mistbringer |
Well I'd like to say that's pretty interesting on aspects of negotiating the rebellion mechanics and how that ties into the campaign, so thanks Pin for the summary explanation. I'd also like to thank you once again for taking the helm on this game, as it's definitely not a light game to prep and manage!
I'm just reading the Rebellion mechanics in the Player's Guide myself, and going back to some of the earlier Discussion posts that Isabel had brought up back in April. Here's one of the last posts that covered the preferences noted for Rebellion focus and Officer roles:
So the eventual tally stands at:
Loyalty - 2
Secrecy - 3
Security - 1And in terms of stated preferences for party roles:
Demagogue: Varian
Partisan: Avrora
Recruiter:
Sentinel: Darian
Spymaster:
Strategist:
Of course we're now without Varian as Demagogue...would it make some sense that Isabel now becomes the impassioned face of the rebellion?
I defer to Phineas on what makes more sense for him as either Spymaster or Strategist from an RP standpoint, and I can figure out how to play Galen in the other officer role - hesitant and clumsy at first but gaining confidence as we get farther into the story.
With five of us now, it seems that mechanically the Recruiter role is the least beneficial for us at lower levels. Is that the one we forego for now?
Isabel Rhelian |
I think Laria makes more sense than Rexus - she's a well known public figure who has a reason to be at the Coffee House a lot. Rexus is meant to be dead, so I'd imagine him stepping into a spymaster-type role if we ever need him - something more behind the scenes...
Varian and I had a debate going on over Recruiter and Demagogue so now he's out I'm happy (and indeed keen) to take over as the face of the rebellion.
As a group are we happy with secrecy as our focus? I can't remember which way Varian voted but Secrecy is still joint most popular at least...
Also Pin - thanks very much for taking on all the book-keeping that comes with this AP. Do you want us to handle the rebellion tracking sheet etc or leave it with you? In the Kingmaker game I play in, we as the players do most of the tracking and dice rolling. Would you like us to take the lead in that or not? :) (I'm running an HR game too so I might need the practise...)
Galen Mistbringer |
Something on the boards here that might help us to keep track of our turns and such - Rune's Rebellion Sheet
I've had no experience in Hell's Rebels, but a digital tracking sheet for Kingmaker was really vital to tracking Kingdom turns in my former Kingmaker PbP game.

Congratulations Darian on the baby!
So, I am very excited to start the rebellion! But I am also visiting family this weekend, and may not be able to post until later next monday or tuesday, especially since I want to look some things over and prepare a good start. I might get a chance to look things over while traveling tomorrow, and will do my best to get something in if I can get a network connection, but if you don't hear from me until Tuesday, that is why.
Normally, I would say to bot me during a multiple day absence, but I think its probably important that I post here since we're getting the rebellion kicked off.
Avrora Vikta |
Just a heads up for everyone. We are moving out of our home this week, then staying with friends for over a week while we wait for the closing on our new home, then moving into that. I'll do my best to keep up. If my posting becomes spotty in the next few weeks, I hope you'll understand why :). Please bot me as needed.
Spirit of Pinvendor |
We're not in story time, so I turned on global illumination for you.
Also, I'm not concerned about who manages the sheet. I've been trying to find one that integrates with Google Drive. I will have to try the one Galen linked above. If I'm successful, I'll be able to make it manageable for everyone to make adjustments as needed.
Galen Mistbringer |
Hi All - starting on Thursday the family and I will be overseas on vacation for the next couple of weeks. I am taking a laptop with the materials to be able to post, though it will be spotty at times due to time and availability of internet. I'll keep checking the posts often as best as I can.
