Even with the cobblestones of Argent Avenue and the foliage of Aria Park still wet from the morning’s light rain, dozens of Kintargans have gathered along the facade of the opera house to protest the city’s new lord-mayor, Paracount Barzillai Thrune. The city’s new leader was appointed by Her Infernal Majestrix, Queen Abrogail II, in the wake of the previous lord-mayor’s sudden flight from the city— an event that still has local rumormongers whispering furiously. In a scant seven days, Paracount Thrune has instituted martial law, a curfew, and seven outlandish and polarizing proclamations. These actions and more have called many of Kintargo’s dissatis ed citizens here on this overcast morn. There’s been no sign yet of Barzillai Thrune himself, and the opera house’s doors remain tightly closed—as they have since the man chose the landmark as his new home—but judging by the growing sound of the protesters, he surely can’t ignore the scene on the streets below much longer.

The Proclamations

Proclamation the First:
All slayers of city pests (hereby ascribed as doves, mice, and ravens) who present said pests to the dottari shall be rewarded with a bounty of one copper piece.

Proclamation the Second:
All places of public business must display in a position of prominence within the rst room accessible from the building’s primary entrance a portrait of Her Infernal Magestrix Queen Abrogail II. Said portrait must measure no less than 17 by 11 inches.

Proclamation the Third:
All those who capture, alive and unharmed, feral dogs of a weight exceeding 50 pounds are to be rewarded with a payment of two silver pieces upon transfer of the dogs to the dottari. Such noble guardian creatures should find homes worthy of their kind!

Proclamation the Fourth:
The right to wear ne embroidered clothing in public is hereafter proscribed to anyone other than agents of House Thrune or the Holy Church of Asmodeus. Exceptions can be awarded or purchased at the city’s discretion.

Proclamation the Fifth:
Grain is life! Should grain be spilled in public, all must be gathered, cleaned, and repackaged within the hour. Any person who allows grain to go ungathered after a spillage shall be fined one copper piece per grain.

Proclamation the Sixth:
The imbibing of night tea brings a dangerous imbalance to the slumbering mind. Between the hours of sunset and sunrise, the taking of tea is proscribed.

Proclamation the Seventh:
The odor and flavor of mint is an abomination to the refined palate. Be not the cretin! Mint use in candies, drinks, and all manner of confections is hereby proscribed.

"...and that is why you should not fret, Goodwife, should your son grow more ill. Weakness is for the weak; it is a blessing to serve, and some are destined to serve through weakness and ultimately, demise. Fear not, though; if he has followed the Disciplines he shall be melted down in our Lord's crucible and, in strange eons, shall rise again," continues Corian in a low and gentle, but still somewhat imperious voice. He smiles kindly at the sobbing woman and pats her on the back, his Asmodean finery a little sticky in the warmth.

My heart goes out to you, madam. If I can, I will visit you and offer a healing spell, or some words of comfort. Damn the Asmodeans and damn the Rose for sticking their necks out so far they got it chopped off. And if you can hear me, Milani or Asmodeus, if this was either of your plan, to the Abyss with you. Women and children weep and the gods are distant today. And damn it all, I like my tea at night--what are these absurd proclamations?

Brother Vinithus wipes his brow and maintains his outward expression of infernal confidence, his innards roiling.

Wilhelm stands toward the front of the throng. He wears his own gear rather than the stuff he'd wear while on patrol. The notion of wearing government-owned equipment while protesting that very government had struck him as absurd.

He still carries his spear, though, mostly as a platform for the pennant hanging from the business end. While he usually carried one decorated with the symbol of Kintargo (or just a stylized dragon with the town's colors in his off time), today he'd put together a special one: a simple white cloth, upon which he'd written a phrase. One side bore it in the common tongue, the other bore it in the Infernal.

Get the "Hell" out of Kintargo!

He knows it makes him stand out, but he always believed that fortune favored the bold. He also hopes his boldness will inspire the same in others. He slowly waves the spear back and forth to keep the pennant, and its phrase, visible in spite of the drizzle. Every so often he chants, trying to get it going through the crowd and thus hasten the notice of Barzillai Thrune.

We've gone to all this effort, he can't ignore us all day.

"Government is not a toy! Bring back Bainilus!

The sound of drums and bells snaps Corian out of his reverie.

The man with one black glove! Time to go...

"I am off to keep the peace, in Asmodeus' name," he snaps curtly to another penitent, and turns on his heel, taking long strides towards the park. His glower can easily be mistaken for deviltry, though it was in fact the opposite.

I am assuming that since both Valleria and Wilhelm are members of the city guard, they know each other for a long time.

Valleria was garbed in her usual city watch equipment. She had thought about it for a long of time earlier, but decided that if things get ugly, and she was almost sure they would, keeping a position inside the dottari would be handy.

A lot of people are showing up... I only hope this does not end up in a full massacre.

She sees Wilhelm with his newly made flag.

I new I could count on you Wilhelm... if we had more guards like us it would be so much easier...

She approaches him discretely.

"Don’t let this garb fool you, I am still with you... this is just a 'plan B' in case things get ugly. How many more of us are coming? I thought Jennyns and Litte Tom would come along... do you think they backed down?"

Voreni watches the protest from a shadowed alley. Ordinarily one to skip social gatherings of any sort, he knew Lily would be in the crowd and wanted to make sure she remained safe. The woman's golden hair glistened even with the overcast sky, and he could swear he could pick out her voice among the chanting.

When not watching Lily specifically his eyes scanned the crowd for trouble in a general sense. The dottari seemed nervous. They should. Laws and those that enforce them are meant to protect honest citizens, not cause them harm. The people are agitated and venting their frustrations publicly. This could get ugly fast.

For the third time in an hour he checked his reagents and vials then carefully made sure that his scarf was ready to go over his face and his rapier concealed beneath his cloak. He'd lost sight of Lily and was tempted to enter the crowd to find her, but worried that his weapons or clanking vials would give him away to the dottari.

Morrigan works her way through the crowd, her hood pulled low to obscure her features. She holds her pig familiar, Bacon, in both arms close to her chest, wrapped and concealed in her cloak. Although Morrigan supports the protest, she has no desire to draw attention to herself right now. Her only goal is to find the Silver Raven agent with the one black glove.

Please let my lover be alive. If he's dead, I have nothing left in this world...besides Bacon, of course. Morrigan begins to cry at the still fresh wound of her parents' murder by the church of Asmodeus. Her tears mix with her eyeliner leaving black streaks down her cheeks.

No matter what I find out, if the Silver Ravens are making a reappearance, they stand the best chance of removing Barzillai Thrune from power and I plan on supporting them. I have skills. They'll want me.

Ignati relishes the attention as he walks among the protesters, dressed in his families ceremonial leather armor, he's easy to pick put among the crowd and that's how he likes it.

Play the scandalous black sheep and perhaps they won't see the wolves in the shadows.

Though he knows it's likely futile he scans the crowd hoping to find Fausta, or at least any of the Rose of Milani she used to bring around the family estate.

"Thrice dammed Thrunes they may be, but they've only one chance to leave the Silver City!" He raises his fist as he shouts knowing that at his height he's likely to be seen by almost everyone.

I'm totally cool with Wilhelm and Valleria knowing each other beforehand

Wilhelm pauses from his chanting to greet Valleria.

"I'm glad you're with us. I haven't seen the others yet, though Little Tom said he might come in disguise. I understand the feeling. It takes a lot of courage to stand publicly against a tyrant. It takes twice as much when that tyrant is technically your boss.

Still, even anonymous support is appreciated. We tall nails need all the help we can get, lest we be hammered down too quickly."

He gives a wry smile at his tortured metaphor.

"Speaking of getting hammered, do you think Thrune will acknowledge us, or make us stand all day in the rain so we all catch cold and illness does his dirty work for him?"

That's a royal there...not sure which house. And are those City Guards? Corian's eyes widen slightly at the brazen displays of protest by Ignati, Wilhelm, and Valleria. He walks towards the guards, trying to discern any organization to the milling throng, and nearly bumps into a crying woman dressed in black. I could have sworn she wasn't there...

"Excuse me," he says pleasantly, noting her unusual eyes. Just in case, he surreptitiously looks at her hands for a black glove.

The crowd outside of the Opera House is growing thicker, and some bickering can be heard between groups of pro- and anti-Thrune protesters. Among the anti-Thrune protesters are many disparate voices, from merchants outraged by the tax increases to outright anarchists, and every group in-between. They are quite disorganized, and seem to argue with one another as often as they argue with the Thrune Loyalists in the crowd.

A dozen guards stand in front of the entrance, looking restless. Also watching over the crowd is a tall, scowling woman wearing a black cloak over chainmail. She watches the crowd impassively, one hand curled around the haft of a finely-crafted polearm.

Ignati continues to wander the crowd, shouting down the oppressors and stirring the crowd into patriotic fervor to match his own. Letting his voice carry his convictions.

"What has our Lord-Mayor done for Kintargo I ask you? Nothing!"

"Raise your fists my brothers and sisters, raise your voices! Do not charge us for wearing our finery! Do not tell us when we make take our tea! Do not tell us whose portraits we may hang in our halls!"

edited my post above; I'd meant for everyone to take one of the actions, in addition to the general impression roll; no big deal though Voreni, it was my fault for not being clearer

Voreni catches sight of a figure peeking out from a window on the third floor of the Opera House. It's impossible to gain any detail at this distance, but clearly someone inside is watching the protest with some interest.

The density of the crowd makes it difficult to pick out any specific details, but it occurs to Voreni that this would be an ideal environment for a pickpocket. It is quite easy for him to move through the crowd and eavesdrop. In addition to the expected political arguments, Voreni's ears pick up the following tidbit:

"Someone’s killing tieflings down in the Devil’s Nursery. I’ve heard that whoever’s doing it is taking trophies, but I’m not sure what kind. Sounds like the Slasher’s back... Just what we need!”

"Do not trust so swiftly, Morrigan," says Corian quietly. Dear me, she's just a starry eyed youngster. And did her bosom oink? Aroden's blood, this seems more like Lamashtu or Calistria than Milani to me. Corian neglects to note that he is barely older than Morrigan, if that, but life among the Asmodeans tends to make one feel esteemed...or just old.

"Let's find your 'father', then. The Lord of Law will reward you," he says a little louder, drawing a few annoyed looks from anti-Thrune folks. He gives them a wink.

Interesting. I may need to verify the veracity of this 'Slasher' rumor. The citizens have enough to worry about without some mass murderer prowling the streets. Voreni shakes his head and double-checks his coins, wary of any jostling.

Ignati
A small crowd begins to gather around Ignati in particular, chanting with him. What were once disparate, disorganized voices have, in at least this small area, become a cohesive group decrying the invasive new policies of Barzilai Thrune.

Ignati has +1 on all Charisma-based checks for the next 24 hours, due to popular recognition. Regarding the Vashnarstill family, I will try to do some more research this week and get back to you.

Corian Vinithus
Corian also notices the figure on the third floor of the Opera House peeking down at the crowd, Furthermore, he follows their line of sight into the crowd and begins to notice a disturbing pattern: throughout the crowd are several plainly dressed men and women who appear to be herding the crowd subtly, leading opposing groups into confrontations with one another. He does not, however, see anyone wearing a single black glove.

Valleria Albus
Valleria catches sight of the figure on the third floor, but is unable to make much sense out of the chaos of the crowd.

Not bad.

Morrigan is taken aback by Corian's final statement; her eyes widen and she takes a large step away from him.

"I curse the Lord of Law and all that he stands for! I hope all Asmodeans burn in Hell with their master!" Morrigan spits on the ground. Empowered by her rage, she shouts out into the crowd in anger despite her better judgement. "That's right, everyone! You heard me! Down with the Church of Asmodeous! Down with House Thrune!"

Morrigan turns back to Corian. "Perhaps you are right. I shouldn't trust so swiftly." She squints in an exaggerated fashion and eyes him suspiciously. She brings her nose within inches of his; her gaze is unnerving. Finally she breaks off and resumes walking. "Maybe this way?"

As the crowd grows bigger, Wilhelm begins to display his homemade banner more animatedly. He returns to his attempts to get the crowd to join in in his chanting.

A unified group will be much more potent than this disorganized bunch of groupings.

"Government is not a toy! Bring back Bainilus!"

He keeps an eye out for trouble, especially from the pro-Thrunes or the guards who aren't here to join in. His spear makes for great visibility, but it will also come in handy if the mob degenerates to violence.

Don't let that happen, he thinks, offering a short prayer to anyone listening. The last thing we need is mob violence ruining any chance of credibility.

As Voreni, Corian, and Morrigan approach one of the instigators, he turns and quickly melts back into the crowd, eager to avoid any conflict. I'm assuming I could swap the contact with my own made-up NPC I'm tagging along with? This guy is a stalker, lol.

As the crowd seems to come in tighter, Wilhelm finds himself near a group of pro-Thrunes trying to cause trouble with another knot of protesters.

"Step off, you lot," he says, casually drawing attention to his guardsman's physique and his spear. "If you're only here to cause trouble, then you're not welcome. Leave these good people alone. I don't want to fight you, but if you force my hand it will be over before your cronies have a chance to help you."

From her vantage point, Valleria sees as a couple of men walks towards some of the instigators, probably wanting to stop them but that could mean some fight.

So far, nothing alarming, but where is that Thrune maggot?

Valleria decides to walk towards those men. It was time to put her precautions aside and meet possible allies. In her way, she tries to eavesdrop what the common people are talking about.

"Leave Kintargo, united we stand. Thrice damned Thrunes be gone!"

Voreni
You catch sight of Lily standing at the edge of a large crowd listening to a well-dressed Chelaxian man with noble mien rousing the crowd to overthrow the rule of the Thrunes and liberate Kintargo. She, like much of the rest of the crowd, is listening to him with rapt attention.

Corian
Searching the crowd once more, you fail to catch sight of the man with one glove, but a thorough circuit of the crowd allows you to scare off the instigators once again, who appear to still be present in the crowd, but fade away as soon as they realize they have been noticed. They are clearly organized, and well-trained for what they are doing.

Morrigan
Morrigan has trouble picking out any details in the crowd, and Bacon seems drawn to the scent of fresh bread from a nearby bakery, and is struggling to escape from her grasp to pursue it.
Please give me a reflex save to catch hold of the escaping piggy ;)

Wilhelm
The confrontation with the pro-Thrunes is intense, but the strength in your voice and obvious physical prowess eventually cow the rowdy "Thrunies" and embolden the other protesters around you. As the Thrune supporters begin to thin and melt away from the protest, you notice a round of applause rising from the crowd. It would appear you have some admirers. Three individuals in particular, two broadly-built brothers and their fiery younger sister, remain with you and talk for a bit. The two brothers are Alfonse and Walter, and their sister is Penelope. All three work on a local fishing boat, having immigrated to Kintargo from Egorian. They are hardy, brave, and young, but to the eyes of a seasoned warrior, not suited for urban warfare. Still, these are the common folk of Kintargo, and the support of people like this will be what delivers Kintargo to freedom, if deliverance is to be had.

Valleria
Shouldering past the crowd towards the men confronting the instigators, Valleria catches the tail-end of a conversation:

"...Well, I heard Lord-Mayor Bainilus didn’t flee to Arcadia at all. Broke her neck falling down a flight of stairs. Praying a bit too hard to Cailean, if you understand my meaning."

Ignati
Moving to another area is wise, as it is clear that the guards are keeping watch on any particularly large groups of agitators...they have not moved against anyone yet, but the nervous energy is plainly written on the sallow faces of the dottari. The new group of protesters takes to Ignati as easily as the last one did, joining the first group and chanting in one voice, stomping their feet rhytmically as they call for the liberation of Kintargo. The dottari look even more uncomfortable than they did before, and the scowling woman standing near the entrance of the Opera House narrows her gaze at Ignati.

Ignati now has a total of +2 to all Charisma checks for the next 24 hours, as he has become even more recognized and respected by the crowd

Swiveling to face the faithful dottari,

"Surely, you understand our frustrations! Do not grip your weapons so tight, are you not too, children of Kintargo? Would you not see your city shine?"

Morrigan struggles with her hungry familiar squirming and squealing under her cloak.

"Quiet. We don't want to bring undue attention to ourselves. Any one of these people could be a hidden Asmodean looking to kill me for desertion or heresy. I already had one slip up today as it is."

I don't know what the save DC is, but hopefully Bacon has the Intelligence not to do anything too stupid.

Voreni moves to shadow Lily, keeping a watchful eye on any of the instigators who moved through the crowd earlier and pickpockets who might take advantage of the situation. He remains careful and keeps his hood up, and away from the young singer's line of sight.

Confound these people! he thinks as his mood toward the protesters shifts some. They're putting themselves in danger! The Queen is who really needs to hear this, and I am betting the Lord-Mayor is doing everything in his power to keep news of these protests from travelling too far. It would be his own neck on the line if she were to discover he was doing a poor job of maintaining the peace!

Corian glances at Morrigan. Pigs at a protest? Something is amiss... He pays it little heed, though, cursing under his breath. "Hellsfire, where is he?"

Fine.

Corian draws a breath and points to the figure in the third story window. "Look, people of Kintargo!" he intones in a booming voice. He makes no indication as to whether the peeking person is a good or bad thing, merely to get their attention, in the hopes that the man in the black glove may reveal himself.
