Infuriated that his scouting had turned up fruitless, he felt as though he'd turned the whole town upside-down in his search for the missing lovebirds, only to come back empty-handed. Defeated and sour-faced, his visage melted into one of sudden relief as he returned to the Battle Market and the town's newest (and arguably tallest) arrival only to find that Bartan and Yazi had already been procured!

"There you are," mock-griped the Pathfinder, hands-on-his-hips and brow furled into an ensemble that looked more as if it belonged to an angry mother than a some surly explorer. "I've been looking all over the place for you guys! Where've you-- y'know what? It's probably better I don't know."

Finally, Amir'd get to hear what all the hub-bub was about!

Well you have our attention. Khayal states as he waits for the news from the tall stranger.

Male Human Gamemaster

When everyone has arrived, Father Fidyzia looks at each in turn and begins.

Wall of text:

“I do not belong to a single church. I do not mock those priests who choose to remain in one location and tend to one building - not at all, for they provide a needed service. But I am not at ease if I stay in one location. I am a traveler, as I have said, and have walked the billowing sands of Osirion, the westernmost veldt of Nex, and much of our own beloved Katapesh in between. I have seen much in my travels, and have brought the word and redemption of the Dawnflower to many. Yet also have I seen much in the way of cruelty and war in those travels, and it is a warning of such I bring to you today."

“You have distinguished yourselves by defeating the Kulldis. You know that word of the liberation of Kelmarane has reached all the way to the coast by now, and you are enjoying the fruits of that success even as we speak in the form of trade and tax. Yet word spreads not only to friends, but also to enemies. The Carrion King knows of what you’ve done to the Kulldis, and though he did not reply in kind at once, I have heard dire rumors in my travels. Rumors of gnoll tribes gathering on the far slopes of Pale Mountain, tribes united under one banner - the sign of the Carrion King!"

“My path is not one of war. Sarenrae teaches redemption and forgiveness, but I know well that many do not seek these ends, and that war is oftn inevitable. Yet sometimes, there are other ways. The gnolls are ever a bickering lot, and if the Carrion King has managed to unite these tribes, then his word is mighty indeed. And although I despair to think on the death of any living creature, if the Carrion King’s death would mean that the gnoll tribes would stand down—a war could be averted."

“And so I bring this news to you. I shall not stay long, for I have no desire to be caught up in the folly of battle. But you would do well, heroes, to take my warning to heart. Seek out the Carrion King and bring him low before he raises high the flgs of war. You will find him in the House of the Beast, the rumors say, an ancient temple upon the far side of Pale Mountain from which he has long ruled. May your efforts be swift and just, that needless suffering be averted.”

With that, Father Fidyzia throws a few coppers on the bar to pay for his meal, and appears ready to leave as quickly as he arrived.

Father Fidyzia merely shrugs. "I have not traveled there myself, as there has been no reason to. If you would seek out Pale Mountain, ask some of the fur trappers and spice pickers who come to Kelmarane with their hard-earned wares taken from the mountain range to the west."

To Khayal he said "It is not my place to question what dreams the Dawnflower places in my sleeping mind as visions."

Whilst the heroes and their gigantic guest discussed the ifs-and-ares of the Carrion King's plots, Amir's face visibly soured as soon as the topic came into play. Though he hadn't mentioned it to anyone so as to not cause undue panic, it seemed the rumors were true: a gnoll had mustered the forces of the numerous tribes and now had Kelmarane -- and possibly beyond! -- in-sight.

Momentarily oblivious to both Paige's inquiry and Yazi's subtle innuendo, the bard was oddly silent, quipless and lost in his own thoughts, at least for the time being. This was serious; arguably more so than Yazi and the some of the others seemed to give credit. Though he had had little experience with gnolls first-hand, Amir knew all too well that the beasts were a bickering bunch. For a leader to not only rise out of their ranks but manage to amass the dog-faced curs into a formidable force as not only awe-inspiring, but utterly terrifying... and it showed. Katapesh was Amir's home, distant though he felt here; to see it in peril more than ruffled a few of his feathers, whilst the haunting allure of unseen danger weighed heavily on his own heart.

Blinking hard, Amir returned to his senses, an almost palpable air of gloom and concern shedding from his facial expression as he returned his attention to the druidess.

"What? Oh. Right. Yeah. Fussy'll come along. Might need her..."

Amir trailed off for a moment, before turning a stern gaze to the bejeweled traveler of Serenrae. He had only one question on his mind...

"How long ago did you have this dream, Father? How long has it been since you've heard any news of the Carrion King's movements?" inquired the Pathfinder. It wasn't just a question of curiosity, but of uttermost need, shedding that air of aloofness in favor of a tone of complete seriousness.

As an aside, Amir'll try and share what he knows, too, if at all possible. He'll just Take 10 on his various Knowledge Checks for a total of 20; maybe there's something crucial he's heard or picked up along his trip to Kelmarane :3

"My visions are far between - days, weeks?" Father Fidyzia says, obviously ready to leave the battle market. "What proof would you seek? Increased attacks on Kelmarane by gnolls? A signed document from the Carrion King himself declaring his intent? Look to Pale Mountain, to watch for war fires and listen for the Carrion King’s howl upon the midnight wind."

The older man tightens his leather belt. "Now that the Dawnflower's message is given, I must travel elsewhere." With that, Father Fidyzia moves to leave.

He returns to the group a bit later, after having bought some provisions of his own. He buys food and water, as well as some scrolls of endure elements (or a wand if he can find one!). He'll also buy a few other scrolls of random useful spells.

"My friends, I have asked Lady Irez about our current course of action, and she has revealed to me that we will face many hardships. We will likely falter in our search at first, and it will cause us great difficulty, but we must follow this course if we are to avoid the avalanche of destruction that the Carrion King will bring if we do nothing.
We must be cautious, as indecision in our group's goals could lead us into conflict within our own group. Even if one of us falters, we must stand strong against the adversity coming between us, and take up arms together.
In the end, we must attack the Carrion King from all sides in a full assault, and it may require us to negotiate with another enemy and make a temporary ally in order to defeat him."

Rage 24/24 Resolve 5/5 Wild Nights 2/2 Carry the Burden 2/2

Yazi nods and indicates the right again, staying along the Path (6).

1 person marked this as a favorite.

"That card represents the fickle power of magic, and reversed in this manner suggests that you are currently relying on magic that may be risky. This... could represent the dagger itself."

last row!:

card7: 1d54 ⇒ 52 reversed: 1d2 ⇒ 2 => 52: The Tyrant (Lawful Evil, Charisma) [reversed]
card8: 1d54 ⇒ 5 reversed: 1d2 ⇒ 1 => 5: The Bear (True Neutral, Strength)
card9: 1d54 ⇒ 25 reversed: 1d2 ⇒ 1 => 25: The Tangled Briar (Lawful Evil, Constitution)
card10: 1d54 ⇒ 3 reversed: 1d2 ⇒ 2 => 3: The Big Sky (Chaotic Good, Strength)

The final row is four cards wide. "Finally, your future. Please choose card 7, 8, 9, or 10 (left to right)"

With a shrug Yazi will once again point towards the right most path (10). "Unless my guide would suggest a differant road?" she muses aloud, not taking her eyes off the card.

Male Human Gamemaster

Despite Paige using her knowledge of the land and its' people, and Amir using his natural charm to ask about Pale Mountain, the adventurers find the local trappers and traders a closed-mouthed lot. The Brazen Peaks' treasures are seemingly so sparse that not a single trader is willing to go into details about the gnoll patrols, the route to Pale Mountain, or even which river would be best to travel upwards into the valleys and ridges. Each person asked fears losing the only income they have in the battle market wares, or being accused of stealing another's claim.

Late into the night at The Lucky Cup, only Paige, Amir, and Bartan managed to get the pity of an overly-drunk patron to draw a crude map of the lands west of Kelmarane. The cloth dishrag was saved (you can still see the circles made by the ale cup at the bottom), and now the party has a map, of sorts.

(Ah, the good ol' days of map-making in 2nd Ed...anybody have Profession: Scribe? Or a map-maker's kit? I can improve the map as you go along, of course, but players' skills make it easier for the GM in these cases.)
