How did he get 4 AoOs?
(It has a bite and four claws in its' attack. If an attack is limited to one limb from a multi-limbed creature, I'm not finding it in the rules. The bite would have had other ramifications. The creature is flying (natural antigrav) and has Fly-By Attack. No need to move to have all limbs attack, unlike the heavy sand kraken.)
ROUND FIVE
Init:
Bartan: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (17) + 4 = 21
Hajar: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (3) + 1 = 4
Khayal: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (11) + 6 = 17
Yazi: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (5) + 2 = 7
Paige: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (10) + 2 = 12 (Entangle spell active)
Monsters: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (12) + 5 = 17
(Bartan, Monsters, Khayal, Paige, Yazi, Hajar)
Hajar nar Jundi |
Well, you are limited to one AoO per round unless you have combat reflexes as a feat.
Making an Attack of Opportunity: An attack of opportunity is a single melee attack, and most characters can only make one per round. You don't have to make an attack of opportunity if you don't want to. You make your attack of opportunity at your normal attack bonus, even if you've already attacked in the round. An attack of opportunity “interrupts” the normal flow of actions in the round. If an attack of opportunity is provoked, immediately resolve the attack of opportunity, then continue with the next character's turn (or complete the current turn, if the attack of opportunity was provoked in the midst of a character's turn).
Combat Reflexes and Additional Attacks of Opportunity: If you have the Combat Reflexes feat, you can add your Dexterity bonus to the number of attacks of opportunity you can make in a round. This feat does not let you make more than one attack for a given opportunity, but if the same opponent provokes two attacks of opportunity from you, you could make two separate attacks of opportunity (since each one represents a different opportunity). Moving out of more than one square threatened by the same opponent in the same round doesn't count as more than one opportunity for that opponent. All these attacks are at your full normal attack bonus.
Khayal Bin Haleen |
Even with combat reflexes you only get one per movement.

There are a few ways to get extra AoOs per provocation, fortuitous weapon enhancement for example.
Frankly does not matter that much to me, it was only 5 hp.

(Man, it's quiet. If everyone's actions are to go up the stairs in order, then here's what happens...)
A blob of red with a massive mouth, curved talon-tipped legs, and two minuscule eyes almost lost in the folds and wattles of its flesh floats into view among the sounds of ripping and gorging from the other summoned creatures. As soon as it makes the turn, a mass of tall grass, weeds, and other plants reach up to wrap around the monstrosity.
Reflex save DC 17: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (2) + 6 = 8
You hear beastlike rage from the overly large mouth with teeth come from the creature, and the piggish eyes stare at the few people left on the bottom curve of the stairs.
(Khayal, Paige, Yazi, Hajar)
Bartan Harrowborn |
"Ms. Paige has stopped! Mistress Yazi, grab her and keep moving!" Bartan continues on, knowing he'd be of no use against the creatures below right now.
Khayal Bin Haleen |
Khayal helps the others up the stairs, staying where he is to block the path of the monstrosity if it wrangles free.
Hajar nar Jundi |
Hajar will act as a rearguard if Khayal moves, he would like to carry the corpse of Zayifid up the stairs but he will abandon it if he needs to move and help his friends.
GM_Pace |
The adventurers retreat up the staircase, while the summoned monsters rip into the bodies of the dead. (Paige's paralysis lasts for 5 rounds, the summoning lasts for 10 rounds, the entangle lasts longer than their summoning. The size of the entangle is such that the creature is much more likely to retreat and go after the carrion on the ground rather than the harder-to-get live prey on the stairs.)
After half a minute, Paige returned to normal. Several seconds after that, the sounds of the monsters faded from the garden area.
(Out of melee.)
Hajar nar Jundi |
Hajar says He traded his life for this scroll. It must mean something.... indicating the fallen Templar. We will bury him facing the West Wind. and Hajar will carry Zayifid and head up to the ground level of this den of iniquity.
Khayal Bin Haleen |
Khayal will return for his belongings, are they in decent condition?
I also don't think we quite finished back down the stairs.
Bartan Harrowborn |
Just to make sure, are we heading back to Kelmarane? If so, Bartan will plan to do some research on the scroll and on how to fix his messed-up eyes.
GM_Pace |
(Unfortunately, the book calls for you to fight your way back out of the House of the Beast, eh heh heh heh (evil GM laugh). I can narrate you level by level, if you're done exploring each room, all the way back to your horses outside around the Pale Mountain.)
(Khayal, the area going off to the left and right of the sarcophagus was not explored, and going back down would require you to read and speak the Terran language. There are a few other nasty surprises as well. Suffice to say the area didn't have any meaning beyond Shirak's Tomb, and was a bunch of catacombs for the "mistakes" of Jharhvul's Army.)
Hajar nar Jundi |
I'm ready to be done with this dungeon. We've been here for months....
GM_Pace |
The adventurers from Kelmarane go back up the several hundred stone steps back up to the hidden opening in front of the Carrion King's Maggot Throne. The carrion heap in the shallow pit has a few still-hot piles of bone and ash, but the room is empty, and dark, and still smells, for the most part.
The bodies of the recently fallen "new" Carrion Guards were kicked into the burning pit.
The former Carrion Guards' weapons are also gone.
----------------------
The diamond-shaped spiral staircase in the center of the former Guards' barracks is also empty. (Everybody going up to the next level?)
Hajar nar Jundi |
Yep.
GM_Pace |
Seeing no one, the team goes to the great chamber with all the curving stairs, and moves upwards. The smoke has cleared the putrid stench that was here, but only barely. The adventurers press onwards, getting to the curve of the Great Dome itself, and then to the spiked staircase of the Great Atrium.
It is late morning after all those stairs, with the sun hot on the sands of the House of the Beast. You look out and see only the buildings standing silently.
Khayal Bin Haleen |
Khayal searches around for any sign of the cart or any material that could be made into a makeshift sled. Perception: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (10) + 6 = 16
Hajar nar Jundi |
Hajar looks for the camels and their provisions cart. No doubt some looter made off with them...
Wait, didn't we send some slaves with our once bard back to make a camp?
GM_Pace |
(Amir Al-Fairuz, the bard who stopped playing, was left behind at the cart & donkeys. It's been 19? days since you left Kelmarane.)
(Jask en Alzi, Kadid, Jaze, Zenor, and Wilst were the merchants you freed.)
There are no tracks of camels, donkeys or cart. You have to be very still and wait for the chance of hearing a camel snort before you can begin looking in the right direction for your bard's camp.
Several hills away from where you left him, you find a deep gully, a literal hole in the side of a hill, where the donkeys and camel have been staked out. They are placidly munching on collected desert grasses. Of the former slaves and Amir, there are no sign.
Paige Nightsong |
survival: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (16) + 12 = 28
perception: 1d20 + 15 ⇒ (16) + 15 = 31
Paige breaths deep the fresh air of the outdoors. Follow me, my friends. I've found our camels. But no sign of the people we left them with. It has been several days since we descended into the darkness. And we shall see the moon tonight! She is giddy at this thought.
Yazi |
"And eventually a bath! And beds!" Yazi chuckles before showing Bartan a cattish grin.
"We should probably tell the Scalies about Cocoa though..."
Hajar nar Jundi |
Hajar stares at Yazi Why do we care what the spawn of the Rough Beast do to each other? That they murder each other would only make the world a more bright place.
Yazi |
"Well Cocoa was the Chieftain's friend and all this time he thought he was betrayed when in truth Cocoa hadn't, he had just been killed and replaced by Zappy. Followers of Grumpy or not it's still really sad." Yazi murmurs.
Khayal Bin Haleen |
I for one am for returning home. Let us load up the camels and place this place behind us. Paige, when you have a moment can you make some water and more of your berries? It would do us well to have more food.
Bartan Harrowborn |
"I agree, let's leave. Being in this hellish place has shown me that I must research some more and varied magics, and I look forward anxiously to doing so."
GM_Pace |
The camel and the donkeys have apparently been well cared for, and after a few minutes you also see the cart where it has been pulled behind a rock outcropping. There are signs of a campsite there, but none of Amir's gear nor any sign of the merchants. It's as if they all left in the last hour, and without their beasts of burden.
(I'm not forgetting any animals, am I? Did Bartan have a camel? Hajar have a horse?)
Being midday, you can set out - or wait until the next morning when it will be cooler.
Hajar nar Jundi |
Hajar really should care what happened to the Bard and the Merchants....but Hajar's player really doesn't. The struggle is real.
Khayal Bin Haleen |
We can wait till morning, if whoever is taking care of our animals returns, they can accompany us back to Kelmarane.
Hajar nar Jundi |
A most wise decision Brother. We must keep a close guard...the Gnolls are still thick in these hills.
Paige Nightsong |
Paige again prepares a berry-licious meal for her friends, be-juicing the fresh water she makes. Fresco. If the plan is to stay the night she will turn into a Coyote and explore the hills abit... so happy to be freaking outside in nature again. Why does evil always live underground? She pouts at the thought of this cosmic truth.
I also wish to waste no play time on Amir, haha.
Hajar nar Jundi |
It's not so much that...we've been in the House of the Beast since Jan 26! thats nearly 9 months of the same dungeon...I'm itching for something new.
GM_Pace |

Hajar nar Jundi |
Hajar nods his assent to Yazi. I did mention burying him facing the West Wind (I think he was the West Wind right?)
Hajar buries Zayifid facing Westward at the Dawn and says prayers to Sarenrae over his once brother.
Khayal Bin Haleen |
Well, I think it is time we head back. Khayal says as he loads up the cart. Paige, if you don't mind making some water and good berries for breakfast, we have a long march ahead of us.
