Eirik noted the blood and gore now floating on the surface and nodded his appreciation to the mystic - the man was deadly as always, and the fact that the creature below had succumbed to a single of the mystic's mental attacks was a good indication that they were not the sturdiest of foes.

If only two of the things remain, I believe we can deal with them even in their own preferred element," he said as he finished helping the inquisitor out from the shaft. "Perhaps we should just go and deal with them; I think their actions showed clearly enough there is no reasoning with them." Which seemed to becoming the norm with their enemies. "Noravia and I will likely suffice, as the two of us can remain underwater for the longest. Though I doubt we could lure them to the shaft again, for spells and missiles to be brought to bear."

Noravia got out in a hurry, but since one blast can kill them, I think we can take them. As long as they don't have an extended family in the next room. What say we just go and do it?

Noravia saw 4 (maybe 5) so there's still at least 3 (4?) creatures.

Caleb said he also wanted to 'alter self' and go down.

Let's see if we can make a plan in the next few hours so I can roll some dice later this evening/night and move the game along..

[quote+Caleb]Are you alright? I'm sorry to make you go back into danger - but I thought it was worth the effort to ensure we weren't murdering some innocents: remember our Tengu friends. Not everyone who looks different is a monster."

Noravia thought that maybe Caleb meant something deeper than just talking about potential foes but wasn't about to acknowledge it in front of the others. "Of course, the good is not always evident. It was right to check before acting."

"If I keep my arms free when transformed then I may be able to wield a weapon under the water. I think that there are most likely four still down there that I'm aware of. It may take more than just you and I, Eirik."

Vandomir was distracted by thoughts of his bad week. He had lost Star. Sure, he we philosophical about that, and he had been sleeping better, but then the two ladies had lost interest in him. Certainly there had been no promises made, just innuendo and such, well and kisses, but Noravia and Caleb had gotten close, and he swore that Tillia was coming on to Hetamon recently.

He had barely registered Noravia's request for the cloak, but he had acquiesced. Creatures, enemies most likely, to be had huh?

"How may I be of assistance? My bow is useless under water, but this," he said as he drew his sword, "should be quite effective."

Poor Vandomir, nobody loves him everybody hates him. Lost both ladies it seems. If he's that interested he aught to do something about it.

"Well, at least we know they aren't friendly now. I don't know that we have any way to deal with them except for some of us to go down there and kill them." She sighed then and said, "Well, at least we tried to talk." She looked at Noravia and asked, "Were you able to see any method of draining the room before they attacked?"

Female Human Inquisitor(Infiltrator)/10

Are we at minuses to hit underwater? Did Noravia see anything to drain the chamber below? It didn't seem like anything was mentioned but I thought I'd ask since Tillia asked Noravia.

Noravia did not see anything to drain this chamber.

There's a good review for underwater rules here.

BTW, if you can breathe underwater then you can also talk underwater. You may have to get close to each other but you can talk. otherwise, it would be a very boring game.

Caleb initiative: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (18) + 2 = 20
Eirik initiative: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (8) + 4 = 12
Noravia initiative: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (18) + 5 = 23
enemies initiative: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (4) + 2 = 6

Female Human Inquisitor(Infiltrator)/10

Noravia was feeling more prepared to fight these creatures and she found it comforting that both Eirik and Caleb were with her. Swimming quickly towards one of the skum, she thrust her morningstar towards it in an attempt to pierce its flesh.

+1morningstar: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (19) + 6 = 25
damage: 1d8 + 2 ⇒ (4) + 2 = 6

She rammed the skum into one of the pillars and the spikes from her weapon impaled the creature and drew blood. It was then that Noravia realized that she could also move her manta ray tail and that the spikes on it may also be able to do some damage. Trying to maneuver a part of her body she didn't usually attack with, she swung at the skum.

manta ray tail: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (5) + 6 = 11 It says to use your highest attack bonus but I'm not sure if I chose the right number
damage: 1d6 ⇒ 5

Male Human Monk (unchained) 11

Good to see you got back in one piece, Vandomir ;^)

Swim: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (16) + 1 = 17

Eirik wasn’t a strong swimmer, but then again, this wasn’t open water. The various pillars and the uneven, cracked tiled floor offered hand- and foothold to propel him forward, though the weight of the water did slow him down to a crawl. For a moment, the monk envied Noravia and Caleb their magic-granted freedom of movement, yet the approach of the fishmen interrupted his musings. Eirik made to charge forward, only to be reminded of the realities of the battleground as their surroundings fought his every movement. There was no forcing his way through the water, he had to ease himself forward. And while certainly possible, it made for slow going.

He immediately realized moving to meet the enemy was not something he could do here. Instead, he made cautious progress to reach the inquisitor’s flank, inviting the enemies to close the distance while preparing himself for a counter-attack.

Those underwater combat rules must be bugged… 1/4 or 1/2 movement if a swim check succeeds, normal movement if not? Should be ‘none’ there in the table, I think. Anyway, swim check succeeds, so Eirik gets to move. Problem is, it’s only quarter speed with a move action, so he doesn’t get close enough to attack… so he’ll move diagonally next to Noravia with a 5’ step (assuming that is OK underwater) and will instead ready action to strike back if/when an enemy moves within reach.

Melee, lethal: 1d20 + 11 - 2 ⇒ (12) + 11 - 2 = 21
Damage, unarmed, lethal: 1d4 + 1d6 + 1d4 + 1 ⇒ (4) + (3) + (2) + 1 = 10 Half damage, but electrical and bleeding are not affected, so I substituted 1d4 for 1d8 and dropped the other +1 damage from the calculation.

With an enemy now close enough to reach, the monk sprung into action. He had lodged the heel of one boot into a hole in the floor tiles and now pushed himself forward, reaching with one hand to keep the enemy close while lashing out with the other, his Ki-claws ripping through flesh and scales, turning the water black with fresh blood.

Technically alter self grants the ability breathe underwater anyway. Presumably to make things easier.
This means Caleb is down two second level spells, though.

Caleb gloried for a moment in the weightless wonder of his new, powerful form. With a flick of his tail he whipped through the air towards Eirik in a storm of bubbles, unleashing the power of his mind on the nearest fish-man.
damage mind thrust dc 17 to halve: 5d6 ⇒ (2, 3, 4, 6, 3) = 18
if needed: concentration: 1d20 + 13 ⇒ (10) + 13 = 23
The skum convulsed, trails of blood rising from its eye-sockets. if dead It jerked one final times, then sank slowly to the ground.
The water started to turn dark with bubbles and blood. Something in Caleb responded.

Yes I agree with you but you said you turned into a 'lizardman' and lizardmen can't breathe underwater. If you would have turned into something that could breathe water then it wouldn't be a problem.

Was that just an oversight on your part? Did you mean to turn into a 'gillman' for example?

Yes, I agree as well. It should be NO movement if you fail your swim check.

Eh, I'm good - put the concentration check in just in case.
I believe RAW is it can - but RAW is a bit stupid. Looked into this when I tried to shapeshift an octopus once. Couldn't get it able to breathe air, because the rules were overly simplistic.

@Tillia, Vandomir: expecting another make out post, now you've been left alone ;P

Male Chelaxian Ranger 8 (AC:21[T:12 FF:19] | HP: 73/79 (0NL) | F+9*, R+8, W+5 | Init: +2* |Perc: +14*)

Making out in the middle of combat? Didn't you see that Vandomir noticed her moving in on Hetamon?

It was both awkward and surreal being alone with Tillia at this time. There had been attraction, but what had happened? And right now their friends were headed off to a fight, one they were not guaranteed to win. If that went poorly they could soon be in a fight for their own lives. He opened with, "lovely weather today! It is great that Noravia and Caleb are felling well.

female human lust wizard 8, enchanting courtesan 3 | Hp 67/67 | AC 17, TAC 13, FF 11 (15) | CMB +3; CMD 17 | F +8, Ref 7, Will +11 | Peception +1 | dazing touch (8/8), aura of despair (8/8rnds)

Tillia nodded and looked for a pot to sit down at while the others went below to deal with the creatures that were causing them problems. "Why so awkward Vandomir, why don't you sit with me?? She gestured on the floor next to her and watched to see what he would do.

After a few moments she finally said, [b]"I'm very sorry about Starr, she was a good dog and I...I let her down." She gave him a guilty look as she said, "I can't remember if I told you before but I had intended to give her a potion to heal her, but with Caleb falling and the ghost threatening them both I had to choose. If I had known the thing would be put down so fast I would have gone ahead and healed your four legged friend." She held a hand up for Salina to perch on and the bird swooped in, landing and glancing at her questioningly, "I know how bad I'd feel if I were to lose Salina and..." She looked downcast then, "and I'm sorry."

Male Chelaxian Ranger 8 (AC:21[T:12 FF:19] | HP: 73/79 (0NL) | F+9*, R+8, W+5 | Init: +2* |Perc: +14*)

Vandomir was surprised to hear Tillia's feelings, so he reached out a hand to her, "Tillia, I am so sorry. I did not realize that you had been harboring this guilt. Please, don't. Saving Caleb's life was certainly the right thing to do. As you said, you had no way of knowing that the ghost would be finished so quickly. Honestly, I miss her a lot, but she too made choices, she was not like other dogs." He paused briefly, "really, I have been missing her most at night. She was quite a bed hog."

Underwater combat was certainly problematic, Eirik thought as he saw enemies coming at him from high and low, in a way quite unlike anything he had practiced defending against, while his own strikes were slowed down by the weight of the water. Luckily, the primeval combat style he had recently mastered gave him more options, in the form of slashing attacks better suited to the environment. Still, it meant adapting on the fly.

Wind and Rain, into River of Light. The ridge hand blow caught the first enemy in the throat as it was manoeuvring for another pass with its trident, crushing its larynx. As the thing get go of its weapon to reflexively clutch at its throat, the hook kick caught it in its side, pushing it further away from the monk, giving him a moment to properly concentrate on the creature that had managed to press its attacks through his defences. As it was preparing for another attack, Folding the Air deflected the first thrust aside, leaving the enemy open for a variant of Viper Flicks its Tongue. The spear hand strike cut deep into its left shoulder, drawing arterial blood.

Damage, rend: 2d3 ⇒ (1, 2) = 3 This only in the case two attacks hit the same enemy, so it's up to whether 14 from the second strike is enough for a hit

One 1 Ki to get the extra attack, and use at least the last attack to hit the fully healthy enemy, if nothing else then just to get bleed going on it too. First hits includes second round's bleed damage on the initial enemy. If the second hit is enough to kill the first, I assume Eirik can switch targets for the second round already, since the target is right next to him.

The pillar obstructed Noravia's view of Caleb but she was somewhat concerned about the murky water seeping her way. She hoped it was from the skum's blood and not Caleb's but there was little she could do until her creature was dealt with. So far she had had trouble utilizing her tail attack and she hoped she had learned enough to be successful. First she darted forward with her morningstar, followed up with her tail attack.

Like Noravia, Eirik's line of sight was cut by a pillar he was using for cover and as a foothold for both, so he had little idea how the others were faring. His ears were no help either - the way the water carried sounds was baffling in the heat of battle. He just had to trust in his comrades to hold their own, at least until he finished of his own foes. One enemy was already sinking to the bottom, its body convulsing in death throes. But the other creature remained, warier now that the intruders had shown themselves their match.

Eirik took hold of the pillar with one hand, tucking in his body to press both feet against the worked stone, then pushed himself forward. He twisted his body violently to dodge the first trident thrust, then reached out with his right hand, caught the creature's shoulder and squeezed, his Ki-clawed fingers digging in deep. Using the leverage the modified Reaping the Barley gave him Eirik pulled himself closer, forcing the enemy to focus on defending itself. Viper flicks its Tongue, into Shake Dew from the Branches. The spear hand strike with his left hand caught the creature in its stomach, and while the creature managed to avoid the follow-up kick in the face, there was nothing it could do to stop Eirik from tearing open the wounds his fingers had just cut into the thing's flesh as he relinquished his hold.

Female Human Inquisitor(Infiltrator)/10

I know that Noravia can breath underwater but can she cast spells in her manta ray form or use a wand? She would like to look for a way to empty the chamber if possible but would like to heal Caleb first. Just wondering if we should surface before continuing - if only so Vandomir and Tillia know we're ok.

Sorry Vandomir, I completely missed that you snuck a post in before the previous turn recap. Been gone a while and so wasn't able to post. Taking care of that now before I go to bed, completely exhausted.

Tillia was startled by Vandomiir's sudden grasping of her, she felt him pull her close and she reveled in the touch of their bodies in such close proximity. She molded herself against him as his lips pressed against hers roughly and she parted her lips to let him ravish them to his hearts content. She gave a low moan of frustration when he broke the kiss and looked at him with delight as she replied, "That was...wow. I wish we had more time now." She leaned back against the wall as she caught her breath and said, "I'm going to take that as a promise of more to come later."

Fabian said that if you can breath, you can talk, so you should be able to cast. Assuming you have a human mouth to shape the words ;^) Otherwise it's the ye ol' "Why can't I cast spells in a parrot form? They can talk, can't they" -debate.

Stats

Caleb breached the water of the well, gasping in a breath of fresh air, and scrabbling his claws on the stone. He was bleeding copiously from a scalp wound that cut deep into his scaled skin.

If Caleb can't breathe underwater, he needs to surface to talk.
"Hard fight." he gasps, oblivious to the tension in the air. "We got them. Vicious little guppies, though. We need to look for some way to drain it, and check out the exits."
He flopped half out of the water onto the floor, splashing water everywhere. Blood oozed from a dozen deep scratches. "I'm spent till I recover, though. One of them nearly got me."
He paused, and looks at Tillia "I can't tell if it's these eyes, but you look all red. You okay?"

Female Human Inquisitor(Infiltrator)/10

Noravia could see Caleb swimming for the opening and he was leaving a trail of blood behind him. She motioned to Eirik and they all headed up. As soon as she exited the water, the inquisitor removed the cloak. She quickly moved towards Caleb as his wounds were quite evident and laid her hands on him. Calling on Milani's power, healing power surged into her hands and into the mystic's body.

Eirik trod water, his head above the surface in the shaft, watching as Noravia treated Caleb's injuries. The battle had been... interesting. Challenging. Not so much due to the skill of the opponents, but for the environment. Had the creatures been much tougher, things might well have turned out badly for them. But nothing had changed - if they were to make use of these cellars as a safe house, they must first make sure it was safe to do so, and that included the underwater level.

"Take as long as you need, but we need to finish this," Eirik said, considering. "I doubt there are more enemies in the immediate vicinity - the sounds of the battle would surely have lured them in. Perhaps Noravia and I can do some more scouting while you rest? Tillia, you mentioned something about a ring you had? Might I borrow it for a moment? Swimming is hard enough when there are not enemies trying to stick a trident through you, and while I doubt there's more around the corner, they might be some deeper in, assuming the underwater level is extensive."

Wouldn't mind borrowing the +Swim check ring for a little bit, if it's OK for Noravia for us to do a bit of duo scouting. Would make moving a lot easier for Eirik.

Female Human Inquisitor(Infiltrator)/10

Noravia is up for scouting.

Noravia nodded at Eirik. "I agree that we should take a closer look down below now that the immediate threat is gone. But I should deal with my own wounds before returning. Are you still ok Eirik or do you also require healing aide?"

Tag Eirik

Touching her hand to her heart, Noravia once again asks for Milani's healing - this time to be bestowed upon herself. Soon healing energy closed the worst of her own wounds.

Casting CLW on self

OOC: Metagaming info...

The flooded areas are just as extensive as upstairs and the challenges get more... 'challenging'.

I'm Ok with the two or three of you taking care of this if desired but I need to set up other situations for those that don't go in.

Without trying to corral you too much, your best course of action is to regroup, get more info, and figure out how to tackle an underwater exploration. And the decision may be that only two or three of you go down but at least I will know for sure and can set up other stuff for those that don't dive in.

Not much fun duoing a major part of the mission, even if it was possible. Should perhaps put some thought to the low tide timing to begin with, or seek answer in the documents lying around. Would a little peek down make it clear the level just keeps on going?

Female Human Inquisitor(Infiltrator)/10

As Noravia prepares to go back into the water with Eirik she says, "So we'll just look around to see if there's a way to drain the chamber and then come back to the surface, right? I think that anything more than that will require more preparation. Maybe find a way that all of us can safety submerge in the water."

Tag Eirik and everyone else if they want

OOC: a quick peek around reveals that there is another room to the east (with another exit) and 'flooded' docks to the south. It seems that the water level was indeed lower at one time due to the existence of the docks (now underwater).

I'll let this run one more day and recap tomorrow.

I'll assume you all go back to the Coffeehouse.

BTW, please post your changes and update your PC sheets. You are now level 6th!

I'll send a proposed loot distribution later tonight.

I've placed a link to the party loot split table (6th level).

I've made some changes to 'even things out'. I switched out rings of protections between Caleb and Tillia and gave 3,000 and 1,500 gp to spend to Eirik and Noravia, respectively.

Check the table because I may have made mistakes but if it's not there, you don't have it.

I take it that you aren't factoring in mundane gear and and money we have on that?

Also, I will be copying the glyph of warding scroll into my spell book, it costs me 90 gp to do so.

Finally, my tentative level up, the only thing that may change are the new spells I took this level. Let me know if we already have heroism and whether you think I should take spiked pit or lightning bolt.
