Action 3 con't. again
Tillia nodded as Noravia told them how long it would take to get the needed items and said, "Then we go with that plan, it is the simplest and puts the least number of us in potential harms way. We can stay nearby in case of trouble but should otherwise be out of sight."

Stats

"The difference, dear Noravia, is that instead of one person entering the lion's den, we can send enough to fight our way out if it goes bad." Caleb shrugs "With our luck, when it goes bad."

I thought there were a bunch of plans we discarded because OOC we want to make sure we don't split the group. The Dottari plan is, frankly, terrible - the inquisitor plan was less likely to go wrong - but has the advantage everyone is part of it.
I vote for that plan. Maybe it'll work, but if it gets us through the front gates then we aren't any worse off than frontal assault anyway.
The "a friend of your son's is a traitor, and as he is loyal to the Throne we want to question him" line works well, I like it. Possibly with an undercurrent of "we question him here and there's no torture."
If he wants to go, we 'arrest' him. Might even turn his old man against THRUNE.
Are we going to need more forged documents?

Action 1
"Tillia? Do you have a few minutes? I've been thinking about your 'trouble'."
---if yes---
Caleb led the Wizard down to his little hidden sleeping cubby. Once there he opened a secure chest and pulled out a giant, hardbound, beautiful book. "This... this is the most valuable thing I own." the thin man opened the book reverently, revealing a page of elven text and a gloriously illustrated picture of a very explicit act. He continued "The book of Joy. Hand illustrated by a good friend of mine - a high priestess. Possession of it is punishable by death. I'm hoping one day I can use it to restart the Callistrian church in Kintargo." he carefully closed the book and handed it over.
"I want you to read it. There has to be something in Callistria's holiest book that'll tell you how to overcome this terrible black cloud that has come over you." he looks embarrassed "I'm afraid I don't read elven - I've looked through it, but the pictures aren't enough."

Action 1 con't.
Tillia followed Caleb with a small amount of curiosity and a great deal of reluctance. She was hurt by what she saw as his rejection of her before but he seemed to be sincere to her. She gently took the offered book as he handed it to her and looked at him through her half dead gaze, a look wich softened as she leaned in and hugged him lightly before planting a soft kiss on his cheek. She let him go and said, "Thank you Caleb, I'll be very careful with it." She turned then and took the book to her room to sit and read it's contents.

OK, I'm going to wrap things up and set up the 'scene' and let Shari roll some dice (and describe the action) to see how well she impersonates an Asmodean Inquisitor.

I'll then roll dice for the NPCs and we'll go from there.

The basic premise is that Noravia will request an audience with Marquel to inquire about his possible traitor friends while the rest of the Ravens will hang out at Vandomir's place, which is fairly close by.

I'll recap in a couple of hours at most.

Questions?

Female Human Inquisitor(Infiltrator)/10

Would it make sense for Noravia to take one or two dottari guards to accompany her? Maybe because the streets aren't always safe during these turbulent times and if Marquel does need to be officially arrested then that may make more sense.

Up to you. You have the costumes and I hear the Ravens did a pretty good impersonation last time.

You have also have some time to decide (who?) because I'm making BBQ and will recap Iron Gods first so I won't get to this until 2-3 hours.

Oh, no answer as to who dresses up as dottari.

Where's the take-charge Noravia who just picks a couple of people?

Failing that, where are the Ravens who just step up and volunteer?

You leave me no choice but to roll for this and the dice may not pick the most adept at bluffing. However, I did have fun last time when I 'forced you to bluff'. So maybe I should make all of you accompany Noravia...

Female Human Inquisitor(Infiltrator)/10

Action 1:

Noravia spent extra time in the morning preparing herself. She knew she’d be returning to a part of her life, albeit briefly, that she didn’t enjoy and knew that it was an affront to Milani. However, she also knew that Milani understood the necessity of what they planned to do and that the goddess would be with her throughout. As she prayed, she called on Milani to mask her goodness and allow her the ability to convince Marquel’s father of her serious intent.

When the prayers were finished, Noravia pulled out two items from her bag that she had kept for such an occasion but hoped to never have to use – her Asmodeus unholy symbol and the typical iron mask worn by Asmodean inquisitors. She carefully hid her Milani divine focus and turned her cloak around to display the black color, keeping the red on the inside. She displayed her mace prominently at her hip and left her morningstar with the rest of her gear. She also grabbed her Asmodean holy text, her manacles, and slung her scrollcase across her body.

Feeling that she now looked the part, Noravia squared her shoulders and strode into the room where the rest of the Silver Ravens were having breakfast. ”So, do I look convincing?”

Tag everyone

Before leaving for the Aulorian home, Noravia takes Sargaeta’s letter and hides it on her person in the same place as Milani’s holy symbol.

Noravia will choose lawful evil as her alignment when she does her prayers. Also, I forgot to take into consideration when spells she would have known as an asmodean inquisitor verses those she would use as a Milanite. Fabian, would you consider bane/bless as equivalents for knowing as well as CLW/inflict light wounds? Understandable if you say no but thought I’d ask.

Female Human Inquisitor(Infiltrator)/10

Here goes nothing!

Action 2:
Noravia stared down the Count with an air of superiority. ”Count Auxis Aulorian, Great is Asmodeus!” She waited for the expected reflexive response to her greeting before continuing. ”You and your family have drawn the eye of our great lord-mayor, Barzillai Thrune, and thus the Asmodean church as well.” She saw the slight puffing out of the Count’s chest in pride before continuing, ”But not for the reasons you hope.” Seeing his haughtiness deflate as it is replaced by doubt, she gave him a cold look. ”It was easy enough to overlook your son’s overt contempt for Kintargo’s glorious ruler in favor of your support since his discontent was expressed only in words. However, Marquel has been rumored to be colluding with a suspected traitor to the crown and that cannot be ignored. He will be interrogated by me, and if necessary, arrested. I would advise that you direct me to where Marquel is hiding so that it may go well with you when I report back to the church.” It was obvious that there was an unspoken threat underlying Noravia’s words because failure to acquiesce to the request of an Asmodean inquisitor would bring the disfavor of the Asmodean church upon the family. ”The sooner we can end this unpleasantness, the better it will be for your family’s reputation.”

”Very much so,” Eirik said, worrying more about his own performance than the inquisitor’s. He rubbed his bare chin with a finger longing to touch the beard he had felt forced to shave – after all, the last time in the disguise, he had been playing up the hairy northern savage part of his heritage, so it just made sense to change things up to avoid being recognized. ”I am no actor, so I think I will stay silent and glower at people unless directly addressed by someone.”

What actually makes up a Dottari uniform, beside the clothes? Are we wearing armor and using some stock weapons? I think a spear is pretty common for city guards, and Eirik can even use one in an emergency, so I’ll go with him having one, but if armor is mandatory, he’ll be severely penalized if things escalate into a battle.

Action 2

Disguise of Bluff? Oh goody… could someone who actually knows the stuff (Caleb comes to mind) do the stuff for us? But in case that’s not possible, let’s murder a roll here…

Disguise: 1d20 - 1 ⇒ (9) - 1 = 8 Well, could have been very, very much worse… Eirik’s just going to loom at people in silence; not much call for a grunt to speak in front of his betters in any case.

Eating a loaf of bread after busking on a nearby street corner for the entertainment of the upper class, Caleb screwed up his face at being left out of the action.
"She did have a point though - my tattoos do make me stand out" BZZZZ "Well, she doesn't know how good I am, she's just being cautious." *A deep well of emotion* "You stay out of this - I don't want to be leader, and she's not taking over."
Alone, on an almost empty street, sitting on a park bench, Caleb rubbed his forehead and thought how wonderful quiet must be.

Wiki to the rescue... got a decent description of the Dottari uniform.

Noravia wrote:
”The sooner we can end this unpleasantness, the better it will be for your family’s reputation.”

Uncomfortable in his black-dyed leather armor, Eirik stood rigidly at attention a step behind Noravia and did his best to glower at their surroundings in silence. He carried a spear in his right hand and a steel shield with the Chelish emblem painted on it in his left. For the hundredth time, it felt like, he resisted the urge to shift his grip on the shield; the unfamiliar weight of the damn thing felt like a lead weight strapped to his arm. The weapon, at least, he knew he could handle, the weight of steel-tipped wood felt familiar in his hand. But the thrice-damned shield and the constricting armor... it was a blessing they had not had the Dottari chainmail in his size.

It had been fun, trying on ill-fitting suits of armor of the more militant brothers back in the monastery, before he had chose the monk's path for himself. He and the other young charges had often sneaked out to bash each other silly with wooden practice weapons, wearing borrowed helmets big enough to keep slipping over their eyes at every turn of the head. But he had grown out of such games long since, and didn't fancy trying to fight someone in this ridiculous attire.

Auxis Aulorian had sweated blood to get to where he was. His allegiance to Kintargo had recently veered towards a much higher power. It was easy to see who had the power in town and he did not want to be left behind. And it was also easy to see that there was something off about this Inquisitor and her entourage. Did the dottari start to use spears now a days? And why was that guard uncomfortable in her armor?

But it was the inquisitor that demanded his attention and her demeanor was as expected. He quickly considered his options. "Yes ma'am. I am well aware about my son's inopportune faux pas. But rest assured that it has been taken care of. There is no need to question him further. He has been cut off from all... shall we say... his former revolutionary friends."

He continued, "And in order to reward you and your officers for your trip out to my place, I will be honored if you could take a sizable donation back to your most esteemed church. Please ma'am; let's just make this go away."

Female Human Inquisitor(Infiltrator)/10

Noravia's eyes narrowed. "The only way to make this 'go away' is to let me do my job. My superiors sent me to interrogate your son and that is what I intend to do. It would be a shame for the church, and our lord-mayor, to hear that you have chosen to protect your son over obeying their wishes." Noravia gave him a sweet, insincere smile. As far as I know, the Dottari uniform wasn’t fussy on weapons, at least the wiki just mentioned the emblemed shield and the black leathers or red-trimmed chain armor. Of course, the noble lord is free to believe exactly what he wants concerning the weapons a Dottari guard *should* be using ;^)

Noravia wrote:

Very conscious of the slightly suspicious glances the nobleman cast in their direction, Eirik answered the glance with a glare, his hostility barely veiled. He knew from past experience that he was no good at lying – he had learned to compensate for that in the court of law, and indeed had made avoiding outright lies a point in his favor, but acting… another form of lying in his mind, and one that couldn’t be danced around so easily. But there were still ways to approach the problem.

Let the man believe he felt insulted at the attempted bribery instead. Let him think he was forcing himself to remain still and silent like a good trooper in the presence of his commander should. Not that he had to stretch truth too far there – nobles who thought laws didn’t apply to anyone with sufficient connections or enough gold had been his opponents far too often in the courts. While the noble focused his attention to Noravia, Eirik proceeded to bore holes in his skin with his judging gaze.

Tillia spotted that the man seemed to notice her discomfort in the armor, the stuff was bulky and unpleasant. The attempted bribe Noravia was the perfect excuse to deflect that though as their "inquisitor" snapped back at the man. Tillia's hand slid to her weapon's hilt but didn't touch it yet. She holds it out towards Marquel and speaks again, "So there are 'friend-s' and not just one. So it sounds like you are in the mood to talk. If you continue to cooperate, there is no need for torture."

When Noravia shuts the door, does she have an idea of whether or not sound would travel easily outside the room? Part of what she's saying is for the benefit of whoever is outside the door and not necessarily for Marquel.

Noravia lowered her voice and said, "I'm here to deliver that message and break you out if necessary. And you may want to make a few noises that make it sound like you're experiencing discomfort but not enough to cause your father to interrupt." She waited for Marquel to read the letter and watched his performance for possible listening ears while he made up his mind. "I know you'll have a lot of questions but now is not the time. You basically need to tell me if you're staying here or am I 'arresting' you?" With that, Noravia pulls out her manacles.

The Lord of the house anted to remain close to his son's bedroom but a stern look from the dottari told him it was a good idea to leave. After all, he had the inquisitor's promise...

Marquel, suspicious at first, took the letter that Noravia offered. His heart soared as he recognized the seal. It didn't take him lomng to read the letter and he pressed it to his heart. "My captain is alive and he sent you?"

He moaned and squirmed but not too convincly. In between, he spoke quickly, "Take me to him! No, I can't go. My father will never let me get arrested. He'll be publicly humiliated by his peers. The fat slob would probably have me killed here if that means that no one knows about it..."

He moaned some more. He looked at the window. "Sneak me out. Have someone waiting for me outside."

A loud barking was heard from below in the gardens, "Aw shit. The dog. Can you take care of that Thurne dog?"

It's all good on my end that this scene is just Noravia, there have been other social interactions where Vandomir or others had the lead. It's how the game goes.

Yeah, I know that as well but it still worries me that you guys will get bored and look for a more active game. :)

BTW, I think I 'may' have an opening in my Iron Gods game...

Noravia realized that Marquel was correct in that it would be more difficult to convince his father that she had to arrest him. If they went that route then things could get messy. However, she also wasn't prepared to sneak him out the window and nothing had been done about the dogs. "Would your father allow you to come with me if we told him you've been convinced of your error and want to tell my superiors yourself about who you've been protecting in order for your father to gain their favor? Otherwise we'll have to come back for you under the cover of night. We can't have you sneaking out your window when it's still light out."

Marquel sneered, "My father would not let me leave with an Asmodean Inquisitor at all. But she tell him you got what you needed and then come back." His eyes lit up, "Yes tonight. I can't wait any longer to be Sargae."

He thought for a moment, "How will I know you're ready. Should we set a time? Will it be you coming for me?"

____________
I plan to recap tonight and... God forbid... ask you to make another plan. :)

Start thinking about it! How will you sneak Marquel out tonight.

At least they had delivered Sargaeta's note. If things went sideways from now, they at least kept their word. "I will be coming back with others and we will try to return tonight. A little bird will tap at your window. That will be your cue to come. I can't give you an exact time but just make sure you're ready to go. Is your window locked? What other hurdles, other than the dogs, do you know about that we should be aware of?"

Noravia looked sternly at Marquel. "Make sure you don't act any different between now and tonight. I don't want anything alerting your father such as a change in mood."

I guess we're coming back for Marquel. My thoughts are...meat tainted with sleeping draft for dogs so we don't have to kill them/they won't make noise, Salina taps on window so Marquel knows it's go time, grapling hook/rope to get him down. Of course, someone may have a better plan...

Turn 144 is up.

Read the OOC.

Questions, comments, and/or suggestions?

Game on!

Stats

Nicely done, guys (especially Noravia).
So he needs to
(A) take out the dogs (quietly)
(B) get the window open (stealthily)
(C) climb down the wall
(D) cross the lawn
(E) climb the fence
(F) get away

A: Caleb can take out *a* dog. Tillia might be able to sleep them. Don't like the idea of poisoning them - too expensive.

B: is the window locked? Can he just open it quietly?

C: Does someone need to be there for him? Featherfall would do this beautifully, I think.

D: just a stealth roll? If the dogs are out Invisibility would do this very nicely.

E: Let's assume the worst: that marquel cannot climb. Do we have a way of making him able to do so? Or making it easier for him to get down and cross the fence? Strong People on the other side might be able to push him over. A good jump or climb skill might be very useful.

F: if we get him out we'll need fast transport nearby.

Seems like this might be a job for Tillia, more than anyone. How many of these spells you got, T?

FYI, I'll be 'out and about' tomorrow during the day and may not be able to post until evening/night.

Female Human Inquisitor(Infiltrator)/10

All that and we wind up back where we started, breaking him out at night and having to deal with the dogs :P I was hoping to get him out with us...sorry!
