Remind me again which floor has the balcony to outside? Was it 2nd or 3rd? Noravia's priority would be to get as many people out as possible. They'll probably have to take out some dottari to make a way for the people. But I'm also waiting to see what Caleb does to Noravia and Eirik before I post for Noravia :)
F1 on the third floor had the park overlook (where you saw Barzillai for the first time during the initial protest).

Eirik Clausen |
Do we still have Noravia's buffs running? I think she casted PoEs and Align Weapons on us just before the bearded devil fight?.
What kinda thing would it be to leap down on the bone devil (seems to be the most dangerous enemy) and do a plunging attack without doing more damage to Eirik than the beast? ;^)
Caleb Cage |
Caleb was using Vanish, so definitely would have worn off by now. Does he still have the glaives though? One glaive is part of the costume, and he could pass the other to Noravia.
We did warn the other Silver Ravens what might happen, and handed out a heap of holy water. Is there any chance they can throw them at the Bone Devil and "let it rain".
Assuming Eirik and Noravia are nearby, have not acted, and acquiesce...
Caleb reached out to grab Eirik and Noravia. "get ready!" he grunted, as he gave them a moment to prepare. He closed his eyes. 'Imagine the dark' he told himself 'Tune all this screaming out... Everything adjoins. Take the short cut...' he grunted again, as if he had been punched in the gut, and for a moment everything was gone - and then so were they.

give it a gap?
With a pop he reappeared next to THRUNE. Eirik on one side. Noravia on another.
DD will mean we can't attack after, but we can draw. Looks like BT might have forgotten to draw though. Figure on Caleb at NW of BT, Noravia at W of BT, and Eirik at N of BT. Eirik and Noravia should have flanking, if he's there next round.
If the preconditions don't work
Now the battle had started, Caleb had eyes only for one target - THRUNE. Hate twisted his face behind his Zon Kuthon mask, and his voice hissed a single word; "PAIN."

Fabian Benavente |
Noravia split her buffs up giving people no more than 3 minutes so they have worn off.
Any NPC are being accounted for in the tally of people who die and/or escape but they won't take an active part in the fight.
Eirik, your question is a moot point if you accept Caleb's use of dimension door. Please confirm that this is OK. Be aware that all that use dimension door forfeit your actions for Round 1.

Tillia |
Action 1
With her efforts to charm the guard having failed Tillia was more than a bit aggravated. It was then that all hell broke loose, quite literally. She knew that getting the guards out of the way on at elast one side was important so people could start to flee and so she looked at the partner of the guard she had just failed and cast a quick spell surreptitiously on him calling out, "Your companion is going to help free the sacrifices!" Tillia pointed at the guard she'd failed to charm, "Kill the traitor!"
Bluff (conceal spell): 1d20 + 16 ⇒ (3) + 16 = 19
I cast Suggestion on the guard next to my failed charm victim. DC 20 Will negates.
Caleb Cage |
that's awesome Eirik - if you're going to do that, go for it! I can always mind zap. If you like the DD, happy to do that too. If not, can I add this to the start.
Caleb pushed his way to the balcony's edge. Hands grasped white-knuckled tight around the brass bannister. 'THRUNE' he thought. Hate twisted his face behind his Zon Kuthon mask, and his voice hissed a single word; "REVENGE."
Across the gap Barzaili shuddered as if struck. He looked around for the source of the assault, and his eyes met Caleb's.
Eirik Clausen |
I think the Paracount is gonna have inches of plot armor, but at least hitting him will make Caleb feel better ;^)
Caleb reached out to grab Eirik and Noravia. "get ready!"
Eirik had been listening to the PAracount's speech with a mixture of puzzlement and horror. He had been holding on to the hope that the devils had been here for security after all, but when the dottari began closing the doors and herding the quests in... and now the man was announcing it in his own very words, and apparently he was going to try and shift the blame for the massacre to the Ravens. Which meant no witness could be allowed to make his way out, to contradict the official version of truth.
'The man is insane,' Eirik thought once again, trying to understand in what particular reality something like this could be whitewashed to serve the Thrune's agenda for more than the immediate future. Unless all the dottari stationed here would meet accidents as well, while they valiantly but futilely tried to defend the citizen from the brazen attack of the revolutionaries...
But then, the mystic touched his shoulder and took them away. The trip was... intense. The monk could find no other word to describe it, nor did he have the time to properly analyze his thoughts about the experience as they popped back into reality between the triumphant Paracount and the massive bone devil they had spied in the cellars. Ever as Caleb focused his attention to the man he seemed to hate with every fiber of his soul, Eirik was left facing the skeletal horror.
'This is going to hurt,' the monk thought, sighing, raising his empty fists into a high guard.
Fabian Benavente |
FYI, the balcony F1 is 20' above the lower sitting area D3 and the orchestra pit D4 is 10' below area D3 (or 30' below area F1).
Caleb moved himself, Noravia, and Eirik to the stage D5, which is 5' above D3.
All of this to say that Eirik found himself between Barzillai and Nox, NOT the bone devil who is in D4.
Is this clear?
Noravia Jeggare |
Caleb reached out to grab Eirik and Noravia. "get ready!"
Noravia braced herself physically for the upcoming sensation. Before they blinked out of sight, she yelled at those around her hoping that Vandomir and Tillia would hear. "Get as many people out as possible. The balcony on the third floor, the dottari can't stop everyon-" And then they were gone.
Only to reappear below in the midst of evil. "Milani, find my hidden strength," she whispered. "I am yours, direct me."
Hopefully we're not too screwed. She doesn't have a lot of things left to buff again and the odds are definitely not in our favor :(
Nox is an outsider, correct? Can Noravia take a knowledge, planes roll to see if she can determine what's happened/happening with Nox?

Noravia gritted her teeth against the pain of her wound, squared her shoulders, and in a clear voice addressed Nox. "You have been judged for evil crimes against the citizens of Kintargo. You will pay with your blood."
Milani's judgment flowed swiftly through Noravia's morningstar as she brought it down with crushing efficiency against the evil outsider.

Is it possible to tell if it was invisibility or teleport? Does he provoke AoO? Is this just the module saying "...and he gets away..."?
If the last one I'll stop poking.
Caleb stepped back behind Noravia long enough to gather his wits. He gestured - unnecessarily - and a massive swirling ball of inky water manifested behind the beglaived devils. At speed it rushed forward, towards where THRUNE had stood, bowling over Nox and the three devils as it careens towards the pit below.
5ft step.
Standard: Aqueous Orb.
Move: Start the orb in D6 and end it just before D4. DC 19 save, no SR. Fail a save and take 2d6 nonlethal: 2d6 ⇒ (1, 4) = 5. Fail two saves and be entangled and carried along.
Eirik Clausen |
Perhaps the Paracount was an illusion to begin with ;^) I'd totally see that as a reasonable safety measure.
From the corner of his eye he saw the Paracount vanish without a trace, but Eirik could spare the man no more attention as he found himself in a fourway melee with three devils and the glaive-wielding menace they had just barely survived the last time their paths had crossed. At least the woman was focusing on Noravia for the moment, allowing him to focus on the devils.
The haft of a glaive was present to block Eirik's roundhouse kick, but the follow-up palm strike into the devil's chest caught the creature by surprise, cracking ribs and rupturing blood vessels.
Melee, flurry: 1d20 + 15 ⇒ (2) + 15 = 17
Melee, flurry: 1d20 + 14 ⇒ (16) + 14 = 30
Melee, flurry: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (1) + 9 = 10
Ok, this was a bad round of combat for Eirik, considering the AC of enemies. At least he has enough AC to trade blows for a bit.
Damage, unarmed, lethal: 1d10 + 1d6 + 1d4 + 1 ⇒ (6) + (2) + (3) + 1 = 12
Tillia |
Action 1
This was as bad as she feared it would be and she wasn't happy that her spells kept failing on these damned guards. She called out to Vandomir, "Kill the guards at the stairs!" Tillia then said to the people, "Back away from the guards! Keep them off of me and I will do what I can to get you out of here!" She hoped that they would give her a clear enough path to do what she intended.
Further action coming after a bit of clarification. Which balcony has an outdoors section. This is the same building that Brassy made his initial speech from and so I know one of these has to lead out.

Like I told Noravia above, F1 on the third floor had the park overlook (where you saw Barzillai for the first time during the initial protest). the balcony while open to the outside still is on the third floor.
Stairs S11 and S12 lead up to the third floor.
I'm assuming Vandomir will try and kill the guards at S11 and S12?

Spellcraft DC 17 lets you know that Brassy cast invisibility.
He does provoke but there was no one in any condition to take advantage of the AoO.
Keep asking; I like questions. :)

Sorry bout that, I missed that she had asked that already. Yes, I want to start getting these people up to the third floor balcony. From there I can cast Ice Wall to make a ramp down to the ground for them, or a slide if necessary. We'll focus on the stairs at S12 first since he's closest to that point.
Tiliia moved slightly closer and said to the people before her, "Clear out from in front of me!" She then began to chant and, once they'd moved out of the way, blasted the guards there with a wave of negative emotions, fear, ennui, and then a crushing despair. With her spell finished Tillia called out "Kill these two traitors and get to the next balcony! Wait for me there!"
Moving closer to the guards at S 12 and then casting Crushing Despair, DC 21 will negates. Hopefully the crowd listens and gets out from in front of me.
Caleb Cage |
We should have had 3 people in AoO range of him, I thought. I also thought DD still allowed dimension door.
spellcraft: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (7) + 5 = 12
Noravia Jeggare |
Fabian, why ever would you be worried for us? Just because we're grossly outnumbered and never stood a chance? Pshaw.
I forgot to mention that Noravia will stay in close to Nox so that she can't make use of the reach of her glaive.
spellcraft: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (18) + 7 = 25
Oh sure, for that she rolls well
Noravia knew that Thrune's whereabouts would be of utmost importance to Caleb so she called out, "Thrune went invisible." She didn't have time to worry about invisible attacks as she had her hands full with the very-real Nox before her. As long as they could buy time to get some of the citizens out, Noravia would willingly become a martyr.
Noravia may be ok with being a martyr but I'm not...just saying :)

I'm confused. Is what you call 'DD" something other than 'dimension door'?
If it's dimension door then everyone that 'uses' the spell cannot act in the same round (Round 1). You said so in post 6103 and I confirmed it (and asked people if that was OK) in post 6104.
Am I missing something?

FYI, unless you corner Nox, all she needs to do is 5' step (no AoO) backwards and be able to use her glaive.

We don't have to win win this, just delay the mobs long enough for some of us to get the doors open and the people fleeing. Once a few people get out and are able to tell the true tale of who's trying to kill whom, that should be bad for the Thrunes. We can beat a hasty retreat at that point ;^) Particularly since we don't have all our best gear, I really don't fancy fighting the bone devil (which seems terrifying) and Nox (whom we know is deadly) to the death.

That seems like a plan that will keep you (most of you?) alive. Good thinking! :)
Noravia Jeggare |
I thought the plan all along was to distract and get as many people out as possible. Noravia doesn't actually think they should stay and fight to the end...
I'd be willing to bring Elsbeth in to help get people out by dealing with some of the dottari. Can I adjust her spells a little since she wouldn't have been sneaking around?
Eirik, I have another align weapon spell but not sure if I can cast it in the middle of the fight...Fabian?
I'm back at work today (my day off was yesterday in lieu of Saturday when Canada turned 150) but I should be able to post for both ladies after work.

Only bring Elsbeth (or any other NPC) for the 'main fight'. Otherwise, it's already assumed that they are helping to bring people out to safety.
I'll assume everyone's Ok with what occurred and recap...

Also, what did you mean by normal weapons? Was that poetic license because Noravia didn't do much damage? She does have a magic weapon - or does the weapon have to be good to affect Nox?

You're really 'out of reach' with your morningstar to get an AoO but because I'm rooting for you all, go ahead and take an AoO.
Nox has DR 5/- (meaning nothing bypasses it). She also regenerates (fast healing 5) unless hit by 'good' weapons and/or spells.
Still worried about you guys. So much so that I started looking at what other stories we can tell together should this one end prematurely. :)
Please prove me wrong! :)

Noravia almost cheered as Nox went over the edge into the orchestra pit but she knew that it was just a brief reprieve. She moved to the edge and stood poised to strike as she infused her weapon with a touch of good and Milani's hatred for evil outsiders.
It doesn't say how long it takes to activate touch of good so I'm just going with it. If I've overstepped, then take it out.
As soon as Nox's head appeared, Noravia bashed it with her morningstar. Visions of whack-a-mole :)

Ugh, these rolls :( It's like the dice roller wants Noravia to die
Stepping backwards towards Eirik, Noravia spoke divine words and touched him. Goodness flowed outwards into him and into her own morningstar.
For her action, she casts align weapon, communal
Elsbeth Wright |
Elsbeth could hear the screaming and knew that she needed to help. She had been concerned about remaining so close to the unmasking ceremony but it appeared that the jig was up. Thankfully they were so concerned about the party attendees that they had left her alone. She had liberated a key from one of the dottaris who would not be waking up the next morning. Making her way to the double doors of the main hall, she placed the key in the lock and took a deep breath. She called on Milani's power and spoke the divine words to cause a toxic cloud to roil within her. She then turned the key, quickly pulled open the double doors, and spewed the cloud into the faces of the surprised dottari.
Elsbeth is opening the doors between D1 and D3. They won't be expecting it so hopefully it will work. She's casting hallucinogenic cloud at the 4 dottari who are guarding that door. DC=19
Once in D3, she'll do what she can to engage the bone devil
Noravia Jeggare |
Alright then. Worth a shot. I guess the only way she hits Nox then is if Nox doesn't get her dexterity added to her AC...
I had no idea where Elsbeth would be. I looked at the map and saw an empty area which she could readily access provided she had a key. Did you have a different idea? I'm open to suggestions but it would probably change her action.
Caleb Cage |
Ah, I didn't want the orb to go down the pit, just stop on the edge. It can roll over barriers less than ten feet tall - can it get back out of the pit please? I was hoping to keep rolling it around and if I'm lucky go over Brassy.
If not, is there any chance of getting Noravia to change her target because it'll just concentrate on keeping Nox wrapped up.
While DD stops you taking an action, I thought you could still take an Attack of Opportunity. Guess he could have 5' stepped, though.
Vespula |
as regards being worried about us... the reason we've not had any holy water for fighting the last bunch of devils was so there'd be a surprise attack by the NPC ravens when this went down. There's somewhere between 6 and 8 holy waters out there, by my count. A single volley of 6 holy waters at the bone devil might not do much, but could help. If not, can we get the holy water back?
I'll let Ves out.
Caleb squirmed for a moment as Ves wormed her way out of his body. For a moment she perched on his shoulder - then zipped across to attack a Dottari.
Move; get out
Standard: charge a Dottari within 50ft. They get AoO
attack: 1d20 + 8 + 2 ⇒ (3) + 8 + 2 = 13 I assume a 13 is a miss?
Caleb Cage |
Caleb stepped backwards and twisted his wrist. His fist unclenched as it rolled over, and the churning ball of water sprang back up, washing over Nox. Spilling over the rim it flooded back around Eirik, once more thrashing past the barbed devils.
'Where is the coward?' he wondered 'How can I make him face me?' Furious the singer turned to face the stage, looking for his target 'I always dreamed about performing up here. Not really the time...' he paused, struck by inspiration. Keeping his face away away from the orchestra pit, he drew breath. Years of training came to the fore. 'I'd always thought this was the one part of me that wasn't honed for revenge' he mused.
In eerie echo of THRUNE'S voice he yelled. "DEVILS!"he shouted "Kill the Dotari! None may survive this!"
5ft free.
Move; move ball. Up, Up, N, NE, N, N, N, NW, W. I have assumed up costs 2. Should end up providing cover to Eirik, at least. Might even entangle all three devils and Nox...
Standard; disguise?disguise: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (19) + 10 = 29 perform: sing: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (8) + 11 = 19 bluff: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (7) + 12 = 19 intimidate: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (15) + 7 = 22
The idea is; if I was one of these Dottari, it's completely believable to me that brassy might kill me to wrap up a loose end. Now the doors are locked, I'm trapped too. My only chance is to flee myself! Even if it only buys a little confusion, it might save lives. If even one of them breaks and opens a door, it gives help, and might cause a rout.
Caleb, of course, is hoping Brassy will appear to contest the order.
Also: who ended up with the hat of disguise?
Eirik Clausen |
5' step NE (also irritating the glaive-wielders), strike the wounded devil. Please work with timing re: Caleb's water orb's movements.
Things didn't look good, but with enemies at all sides there was little to do but try and reduce their numbers, perhaps force the large bone monstrosity to focus on them as well, instead of the hapless guests. The monk wished he could go and challenge the beast even though he didn't think highly of his chances at winning, but as long as these bearded fiends were here he could hardly make the attempt. Thus, they needed disencounraging first.
The monk feinted with a punch at his opponent's eyes, then when the glaive moved to parry the strike he struck low, first kicking the devil in the knee with bone-bruising force, then slamming his own forehead into the enemy's face to splatter its nose when the devil stumbled forward. The bearded fiend reeled back from the repeated blows, bleeding as profusely as Eirik did, even before the Ki-invested claws came in to rake at the hellish crature's flesh.

Intimidate: 1d20 + 13 ⇒ (8) + 13 = 21
Now this looks more like it... although still too many enemies remain. Hopefully the massacre will prove a bit much for at least some of the Dottari to bear...

Action 1
Tillia was relieved to see one of the guards go down but then she saw the other one strike down a nearby woman. She felt her anger blossom and wanted to kill that bastard herself. She began to focus her thoughts and chanted, releasing a spell that caused grease to start forming on the murdering Dottari's blade. She hped that he'd lose his grip on it and stop him from so easily killing people long enough for Vandomir to take him down. Her spell completed successfully despite being jostled Tillia then began to move towards him as she pulled the scarf worked into her ensemble free.
Concentration: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (10) + 12 = 22
I cast grease on the guard's weapon, DC 17 reflex to avoid dropping it, and then move towards him as I pull my scarf free.

I'll have Vandomir go before you. Do you want to give me some contingency action in case Vandomir kills that guard?

In case the guard dies:
Tillia looked to the crowd and cried out, "Get to the third floor and wait for me, I'll make a safe way down for you so you can get out. Just stay calm!" With that she began to make her way up the stairs as quickly as she could to the third floor balcony. Tillia had an escape plan to put in motion.

I'm thinking I might have Caleb do a Brassy impersonation. Just wondering who I would have to grab the hat from.
