Welcome aboard!

Let's start discussing potential PCs, ties, etc.

Here is what I am looking at for the moment:
Valeria Tauranor

Appearance:
Valeria is an eighteen year old tiefling woman with knee length white hair, reddish skin, yellow cat-like eyes, and black horns. Her hands are taloned and she has a long tail. She wears a short top that has a pair of straps over her shoulders and ends just below her breasts, cupping them with a belt that has several straps of fabric attached as a sort of skirt, a few of the strips attach to bangles around her ankles. She has a pair of earrings, a bellybutton bar, a couple of rings, and a necklace.

Back Story:
Valeria Tauranor was born human, her parents were minor nobility and took her vibrant red hair as a sign of their being favored by Asmodeus. While her family were not overly wealthy, they still ran in the same circles as the rest of the minor nobility and Valeria, who was quite lovely already, was the center of most groups of her peers. She wasn't overly cruel though she was particularly stuck up and haughty, at least with those within her own social class, but would treat those below her as exactly that.

From a young age Valeria was taught the use of swords, initially fencing but eventually graduating to heavier blades. She enjoyed this so much that she decided she wanted to join the hell knights in a bid to gain more power for herself. Valeria turned out to be a truly gifted applicant and was taken as an apprentice hell knigh at the age of fifteent. Sadly for her this was as far as her dream would go for she was soon sent to Mendev.

Valeria's unit was sent to the front in Mendev where the war against the demons had taken a terrible turn when the wardstones failed. The goal was to aid in the defense against the abyssal advance and her unit did but Valeria never made it their destination. The unit was attacked when it neared the ruins of Kenabres and were all but decimated. The few to survive were the ones who broke and ran, something Valeria would never do. Instead she was taken by an incubus for experimentation and a fate worse than death.

Her time with the incubus and his succubus partner was a seeming eternity. They tortured her, they raped her, they experimented on her. They used their talents at transmutation and shape changing to warp Valeria into a monster they could unleash upon her order. They had gone so far as to infuse her body with the succubus' essence which mutated the young woman into a tiefling, one with strong ties to the abyss. It wasn't long after that the demonic horde was pushed back and Valeria rescued by a group of heroes who brought her back with them to a safe location.

With all that had happened to her Valeria was in terrible shape, she was trying to adjust to a new body, a form that she saw as hideous, and found that she simply couldn't fight like she used to. Other problems began to arise as she became accustomed to her new form, Valeria found that she was stronger but her mind had been damaged by the atrocities committed upon her body by the two demons. Amusingly in all of this, despite her loathing of her knew form, she command much more attention, with many saying she was quite beautiful. With her body recovered she was sent home where her trauma would only continue.

Her family was initially overjoyed at her change, a great blessing from Asmdoeus they said, until the priest saw her anyway. He decried her for what she truly was, tainted by the abyss. Her family, horrified, cast her out to the streets where Valeria, now with no means of support, had to find a way to survive. She made her way out of town and ended up in the city of Kintargo where she found the only work that she could with no skills, prostitution. During her time there Valeria became increasingly depressed, she would likely have taken her life if not for a stroke of luck, one of her sister courtesans was a Rose ofKintargo and brought hope to Valeria's bleak life.

Having realized that Asmodeus had done nothing for her, had not protected her from what happened up north, Valeria found a new faith to follow, that of the goddess Milani. She kept her faith a secret as all those who worship the Everbloom must in Kintargo and began using her position to glean information from her clients and pass it onto her fellow Roses who passed it along further until it could reach the ears of those who could use it. Her friend from the brothel, a human woman named Aula had decided to go to a protest rally against the martial law was put in place and Valeria decided that someone needed to go with her incase something happened.

Personality:
At first glance Valeria appears to be a tart, a woman who knows she's gorgeous and flaunts her body to the fullest advantage. She enjoys expensive things, though she can rarely afford them, and occasionally comes across as a snob due to her upbringing, fortunately occurrences of these traits are few and far between. In reality, while she uses her body to get what she wants she is not so self confident as she might appear. She is a very private woman when it comes to her past, and she is actually quite self-conscious about her appearance, though she hides it well. When she takes someone into her small circle of friends she becomes absolutely loyal to them. Her greatest strength is her dedication to those she considers friends, this is also her greatest weakness and keeps her from having very many at any given time.

http://i1027.photobucket.com/albums/y339/drogeney/Ivae_zpsjuhmjwaj.jpg

She is intended to be a demonborn tiefling variant who was actually born human. The class I would most like to do for this is either a kineticest or a mesmerist I think. If those are off the table then I will likely go sorceress with the infernal bloodline. Once I determine class I will tweak the backstory to take it into account.

Sweet...
A few questions:
Are vigilante playtest characters and/or occult characters on the table? Are you using the standard (half WBL) or extreme (no magic items) version of Automatic Bonus Progression?

** spoiler omitted **...

Great start! My only concern is that she 'sounds' like the PC you were playing in the CoCT game we were both in. You know... tiefling sorceress-type, ex-prostitute...

I would rather see something different but if you are thinking on playing her differently then I guess I'm Ok with it.

I haven't looked at the occult classes but we have time to do so I would have to say they are OK but I reserve my right to veto. :)

I haven't seen the occult classes but I know where to look for them.

I haven't seen the vigilante class. Is this Paizo?

If these are Paizo then I trust them to be balanced so they should be OK but I want to see them first...

I'll be using the half WBL version of the Automatic Bonus progression rules. Magic items will exist but they will be 'special'.

Game on!

I am interested, very much so. I really like building character's (story as well as mechanics) so I'll ask a few questions.

1. Class restrictions? Ie, can I play a gunslinger?

2. Any general vibes you are looking for?

3. Races, just core?

4. Do you need any help in the set-up phase?

5. You plan on doing the entire Adventure Path?

Sorry for all the questions.

1. No guns. Other Paizo classes should be OK but see my posts above about those classes I haven't seen yet.

2. Rebels, subterfuge, oppression, against all odds, etc.

3. Core + tieflings, try me with something unusual but...

4. What sort of help are you offering?

5. That's a big commitment... (6+ years) and I usually like to cap my games at about 9th-10th level so keep that in mind. I'll probably find a way to bring closure to this AP sooner than running the 6 AP modules but we'll cross that bridge when we get to it (2-3 years out at least)

Similar concept I suppose, I get kinda hung up on it. I'll look at tweaking it so the focus is different. I seem to get rather sucked into that particular character style for some reason, have fun with them I suppose. Just how close I come to that concept partly depends on the class I end up playing as well.

Sadly that CoCT game died at the beginning of June, gm had to quit running things, was really enjoying Lantressa too, oh well.

The other character I had in mind is a tiefling monk, he went master of many styles and aspired to create a dragon-turtle style due to a book he read as a child. If you would rather I try that one I can, Valeria could always be saved for something else.

I'm considering a warpriest of Milani who has ties to the Silver Ravens. Haven't gotten much farther than that. What level are we starting out at?

Fabian Benavente wrote:

Yeah, it was the playtest they just finished up. It wasn't great, but had a really interesting "social persona" mechanic.

For some reason I can't post in the discussion thread?

Here is my post I tried (several times) to post.

I have only just begun the planning process (usually takes me awhile) but I am planning a human Barbarian. A fairly refined one, who worked as a opera house bouncer. A bit of a political leftist, from hanging out with all those artsy types. Sorta of an anarchist by nature.

For the crunch-

Invulnerable Rager archetype.

Oh yeah, and he loves Mint.

Give me a few days and I'll have a character sheet.

I don't know what the problem is with posting here so please email Paizo staff to sort it out.

Regarding your potential PC, I'm not sure a barbarian quite fits the bill here. To me, barbarians just scream wilderness. Have you thought of a 'brawler'? That sounds a lot more like a bouncer to me.

BTW, no hurry on the character development since we're still a good month out from starting.

In fact, unless I come up with something to do in the meantime, I see us waiting around eager to start...

I'm OK with the original concept. Remember that I want you to have fun with your PC (makes for a much better game) rather than me imposing something on you.

This new girl will just be like 'Lantressa' for a while until she comes to her own.

I don't know much about Milani but it was mentioned as being very appropriate for this game so I think that should work.

We are starting at 2nd level.

Yeah, it was the playtest they just finished up. It wasn't great, but had a really interesting "social persona" mechanic.

When will this class become official? I hate having to go back and changing stuff.

From what I read, the 'rebellion' mechanics will be fun. I'm hoping the 'rebellion' and your PCs really influence each other. From what I've seen, this will happen but we'll have to wait and see what 'particular events' occur.

K, and yeah, I fully expect her to start similar but go a different route from Lantressa personality wise, if nothing else Valeria has a different mind set of not liking her new form and lacking self confidence, she has a lot of growing to do. She doesn't even care for her new profession which is exactly what will help draw her away from it and into her role as a revolutionary.

Now just to figure ou4 what class to go with.

Excellent, seems to be working.

Will post further thoughts on PC shortly.

That's okay. For some reason I'm thinking a toymaker. Maybe a gnome, halfling or small tiefling. Someone who's been somewhere that descended into tyranny, lost everything and became a refugee, and moved to Kintargo. Someone who doesn't want to see it happen again.

Probably a Promethean Alchemist, I think. Not sure what it'll contribute to the group.

But let me see what everyone else is looking at - inspiration tends to strike pretty frequently when I mull on things, and it sounds as if we've got a while.

A halfling somehow associated with the Bellflower Network (pg. 4 of Player's Guide) seems very appropriate for this AP.

Also everyone start looking at the 'officers of the rebellion' (pgs 23-24 of Player's Guide). While it says that NPC can take the role of officers, I did invite 6 players...

Are you willing to allow background skill rules?

I'm not sure I know what you mean; please explain yourself.

Background Skills

They are perhaps my favorite thing from the Unleashed book.

male
Drogeney wrote:

I'm all for rounding out characters; I've been known to 'waste' skill ranks on my PCs to round them out. However, this seems a little too much. It gives 2 skill ranks per level to use on skills that are somewhat useful for adventuring (especially a city adventure). I can see skills such as linguistics, perform, handle animal and some others on the 'background skill' list that will be useful. I guess I'm little concerned that a bard will use his background skill ranks and take 'perform' when he should be using his regular skill ranks for this.

How about you all take 1 extra skill rank per level to be used on a profession and/or 'hobby' skill thus giving you all something else that you do besides just adventuring.

Thoughts?

male

I have populated the 'game tab' with additional info about Kintargo (taken from Player's Guide). Start perusing that so you can tie your PCs to Kintargo. Your PC wasn't a bouncer for a bar, he was the bouncer for the Three-Legged Devil at Jarvis End.

Your tiefling PC just wasn't raised in the poor part of town, she was born and raised in the Devil’s Nursery in the Redroof District.

BTW, let's get going on those PCs because I figured out a way to get playing before the AP is out.

We'll be roleplaying two scenes from recent past:

a) when Barzillai Thrune comes to Kintargo and puts it under martial law; and

b) when he issues his seven edicts.

I think this will be a good way to start to get a feel for the PCs and establish NPC connections, etc.

Thoughts?

I can see where it could be a little unbalancing in this campaign, I'm fine with 1 per level, even that helps out a great deal for those that have low skill points per level.

Love those ideas, I'm good with it. Pretty much finished other than gear I think, I'll polish her up in the morning and build an alias. Ended up going with kineticest for my class to further separate her from Lantressa's enchantment based build. I'll be working the strange powers she now has into her background as well in addition to tying her to the area more.

Sounds cool... perhaps this time I could get some screen time to a monk concept. A student of war, a worshipper almost. Someone who sees conflict as a forge that makes or breaks people, exposing weakness but more than that, refining strengths. Witnessing (and assisting, perhaps) a group of the downtrodden to rise against a tyrant who seems to hold every advantage? Something not to be missed.

Having thought on it, I'm not sure fighting diabolist nazis with animated toys is totally in keeping with the spirit of the adventure path. Let me think a little more.

male

Ok, the group is looking like:

barbarian,
tielfling kineticest,
warpriest of Milani, and
monk.

There is one more PC from Harakani coming and I'll invite another player this weekend (waiting to hear back on a first invite) to round the party to six PC (number of officers in rebellion).

The current group is heavily weighed towards melee so I'll be looking for PCs with a roguish and/or political feel to them.

Questions?

I'll take a closer look later tonight (have to familiarize myself with a new class).

BTW, the barbarian turned into a cleric so the party looks like:

human cleric (Cayden Cailean),
tielfling kineticest,
warpriest of Milani, and
monk.

I made sure to copy the rules that I am currently using into the character sheet for ease of reference. I will continue to do so as we level.

Testing...

My issue seems to be my 'Mowque' alias. I wonder why?

In any case I'll have a new one soon, so not much of an issue.

I'm the guy playing the cleric. Will post more later today!

I've read the fluff over lunch; it's great (no comments).

I've also started looking into this new class and it's... daunting. New spell-abilities (a lot) and a new mechanic (burn). Are you sure you don't want to be an air-elemental sorceress?

If you'd rather not deal with the class I'll change it, just really curious to try this out, she came to me like this when I can up with her. I'll grant that I saw her as being fire based but I didn't want to be useless when we deal with devils as I'm sure we one day will. I may still go fire based before we start.

If you don't have any heartache then please switch her class to something more familiar.

Being fire-based and having to deal with devils is a great roleplaying opportunity. :)

If you want to say she's an abyssal bloodlined sorceress but want the mechanics of a fire-elemental bloodline, then let's talk about it. I'm all for personalizing PCs.

Let us know what you decide.

I'll check her then, most likely to sorceress, when I get home tonight from work. Would you consider a homebrew bloodline if I sent it to you?

I would rather you 'reflavored' what's already there but try me.

Alright, I'll see if I can come up with something. This could just turn into a case of make a different character as I tend to lose interest in the character if I change them from the initial concept too much. It's quite possible this will be the case here.

Human Cleric/2

Rough Draft of Kaldar Cailean, my proposed cleric for this game!

Appearance:
Kaldar is a stocky, well-built human. With stiff brown hair, clean shaven jaw and an impressive number of scars, he can be an imposing figure until his smile comes out. Often dressed in fairly beaten down clothes, to escape scrutiny. Carries a small flask of ale as a religious artifact, concealed (due to Cheliax laws).

Background:
Kaldar Caliean (Formerly Naxilan Harzil)

Naxilan was born in Westcrown to middling middle class parents. After a short childhood however, they both died in a house fire, leaving the young child alone. He soon found himself in an orphanage, which was merely a front for the church of Asmodeus. Young and easily manipulated, he became a follower of the Dark Price and entered the priesthood. He had some talent for magic but nothing amazing, barely passing his exams and lessons.

He was sent to Kintargo as a very junior priest, for his first real posting. He never did fall naturally into the role however. Kintargo offered a world of cosmopolitan delights ranging from drink to music to courtesans and Naxilan tried them all, much to the despair of his senior priests. The priests of Asmodeus were supposed to control such excesses through terror and harsh judgment, not be part of such problems. Still, the young priest hung on, trying to find his sins of the flesh as best he could.

Then he made the great mistake. He fell in love with a young opera singer in training. After a brief and torrid affair the church hierarchy found out and gave Naxilan an ultimatum, ‘Get rid of the girl or you will both suffer.’ Terrified of being under the tyranny of the priesthood (and still locked in Asmodeus morals), to her ever-lasting shame he turned her in. She vanished into the network of torture and death of the church, and he never saw her again.

As the weeks passed however, guilt arose in him. It ate him alive, growing stronger and stronger. With the church being no help in this crisis, he doubted everything more and more. Finally he snapped, fled the church and melted into the underworld giving in to the most base pleasures.

It nearly killed him, sleeping in the streets as a drunk, begging for loose change. Sleeping with any woman who would have him, eating any crumb thrown his way. He lived like this for months, and completely fell off the map (so much even the priests gave him up for dead). With no faith, no magic and no soul he roamed the streets.

Finally, in a tiny seedy inn, he came across a kind bartender. He was a religious man but not a follower of Asmodeus. He was instead a follower of Cayden Cailean, a name Naxilan only knew through lessons on heresy and profane worship. But as he sat there, in a drunken haze, the man preached to him, gently and calmly, taking a risk on this young man. The worship of Cayden was illegal of course, the old temple long ago burned down and replaced with a giant edifice to Zon-Kuthon. But the old worshipers still existed, here and there in hidden places.

The next day, Naxilan went back, despite the danger and grew more interested. He quickly grew to like the religion and found a new purpose in life. Shedding his crazed lifestyle, he became a firm follower of the Drunken God, learning from the other scattered followers in the Silver City. The young priest even changed his name, re-forming himself after his new God. Magic came back to him, and he found himself talented at the healing of others.

After martial law was announced he was forced to hide even more, as the crackdown increased intolerance. Kaldar is going to the protest to keep up on current events, as he is too afraid to openly protest or even seek out the Silver Ravens.

Personality:
He is big on laughing and gives off an aura of good times and friendly nature. Tolerance has become a major issue with him and he rarely judges anyone, except for the old priesthood. He has a fiery hate (that he isn’t always proud of) for the followers of Asmodeus and his former brothers. Knowing the inside of the priesthood so well, he is sometimes caught up in revenge as a way to deal with his past sins. Enjoys music a great deal.

Portrait:
The avatar art is ok, do you need more Fabian?

Crunch:
I can’t resist crunch so….

Kaldar is a Cleric of Cayden Cailean. His domains are Travel and Strength. Basic role will be healer (obviously) and some combat. The Strength domain gives him enlarge person which (combined with a reach weapon and travel domain’s faster movement) will let him use AoOs to control baddies in fight scenes (protecting the casters and range guys). Plan on buffing up Str, Wis and some Dex.

I think he'll fit right in a city in the midst of turmoil.

Human Cleric/2

The site says it is from-

Pathfinder Roleplaying Game: NPC Codex (OGL)
Name Carousing Champion

I'm glad you like him. Been building a bit more of the crunch and such. If anyone wants to link backgrounds I'm fine doing that. Every Rebel Squadron needs a big hard-drinking guy! (although he does have a dark side).

I've never played a cleric before, a whole new spell list!

So now is
* human cleric (Cayden Cailean),
* tielfling Sorceror (Fire?),
* ?? warpriest of Milani, and
* ?? monk.

And your toymaking alchemist (Alchemist is probably my favorite class).

Actually I'll be doing a tiefling wizard now, got a viable idea to try. Now I just wish that stock tieflings didn't have that charisma penalty.

*Edit
or maybe human now...decisions decisions.

Not sure if I'll get her finished before Thursday now, Wednesday is a bad day for me to get things done on as I am busy almost all day long. I'll try to finish if I can in the morning.

Milani warpriest will be human.

Working on the fluff right now and had a question. How much time happened between the beginning of the rebellion to martial law being declared? Just trying to piece the timeline of my character into what is happening in the city.

If you want to blow things up, I can strongly recommend fire wizards. At low levels the SLA is quite nice, and at higher levels... well, were you going to do something that wasn't casting a spell anyway?

RE Toymaker: I dunno... I was worried it was too comedic.

If sorceror isn't taken, I've been enamoured of a Amnesiac Mutation Mind Abomination Psychic. Someone with a thing inside him. Letting it out makes him dangerous - and violent, but there's always a risk that one day it won't go back in. Well, IC there is, OOC it's not going to happen.

Damn. Was looking through the dirty trick handbook and just realised Arcane Trickster now has Early Entry again.

Male Human Monk (unchained) 11

Here’s some preliminary work on that monk of mine... I’m a bit sketchy about some timing issues... for example, just how long ago was it that the martial law was issued and the resident factions crushed? I’m making some assumptions here, to keep my creative juices flowing, but am as always willing to tweak things when further information comes my way ;^)

Appearance::

Standing 6’2” tall, weighting 230lbs, Eirik’s Chelaxian blood strongly favors his family’s distant Ulfen ancestors, giving him a tall, heavy-boned, wide-shouldered body that hides a core of well-hones muscles under a portly appearance. His eyes are deep brown, his hair a lighter brown hue, worn long and woven into thumb-thick braids in an imitation of what he prefers to think the Ulfen fashion. A goatee and a wide, bushy mustache compete for the position of prominence on his chin.

Eirik prefers simple trousers and shirt of grey or black hue, soft leather boots and a knee-length, short and wide-sleeved black hooded robe, with a long strip of white cloth tied around his ample waist for a belt. For weapons, he carries with him a pair of both bronze-reinforced cestuses and steel kamas.

Background::

Eirik Clausen was born in Andoran, in a small village a day’s ride from the grand city of Augustana. As the fourth child of a family of farmers struggling to make ends meet, he was sent off to a nearly monastery of Abadar to be raised and trained as a member of the Judge of the Gods’ clergy. Eirik accepted his fate solemnly – it wasn’t as if he were never to see his family again. Indeed, in the years to come he would often be allowed a few weeks from his studies and duties to help his family with the harvest.

Young Eirik took to his new duties and responsibilities seriously, enjoying the availability of knowledge and not minding the copious amount of work required of a very junior acolyte. But he never took to heart the teachings of the faith, finding in himself respect for the deity’s teachings, but little love for him and no burning fervor to follow the path of a cleric. The elders of the order saw the truth of the matter and had already decided to let Eirik go once he reached his majority and finished repaying the expenses of his education to the temple, but one master took an interest in him.

An elder mystic who in his youth had studied the way of personal perfection as preached by Irori’s followers, master Alexar took Eirik under his wing. Under his tutelage, Eirik began exploring the ways of war and proved a suitably skilled student. During the next decade, he devoted himself to mastering what Alexar chose to teach him, and availing himself to the temple complex’s library of tomes and scrolls of history and philosophy. He found himself particularly immersed in stories about the rise and fall of nations, and treaties of cultural and social development during the crucial years of a country’s birth – all too often from the ashes of another, earlier civilization. He became convinced that people progressed the most during times of duress, seeing conflict and suffering as the birthing pains of progress.

Thus, he eyed the developments across the border to the west with mixed feelings. The otherworldly presence behind the throne, the delusion of past power and glory, a child ruler on the throne, no doubt ripe to be molded and shaped by her “advisors”... could there be a country more likely fall into chaos or under the iron heel of oppression? Thus, he reasoned, in all that darkness hid a spark of true majesty, ready to be lit into roaring blaze by the very acts the authorities would no doubt seek to use to suppress it.

Eirik approached his master with his intentions, and seeing the youngster’s mind was set, Alexar at least sought to channel Eirik’s attention. The master had stayed in sporadic contact with certain Irorians he had known in his youth. He knew they lived and worked in the far-off city of Kintargo, as members of the Sacred Order of Archivists. Thus, Alexar convinced Eirik to head to that troubled city, where he at least might find some goodly folks to shelter him.

Eirik readily agreed to the suggestion and prepared for the journey, under the truthful guise of a visiting clergyman to Kintargo’s Abadar community. He had also memorized certain names and contact information to get in touch with his master’s Irorian associates once he had arrived and established himself in the religious community... but by the time he arrived, much had already changed. The iron heel of local rule had forced his master’s friends into hiding – if they were still alive in the first place. All Eirik knew that the methods of establishing communication yielded no results – and he was careful enough not to persist in his efforts, lest he attract attention of the unwanted sort.

Still, Eirik stayed in the city, for he saw in the oppression and fear fertile ground for resistance to take root. His ties to Abadar’s temple offered him some measure of legitimacy and protection, and his skills with the quill and education brought enough work his way to satisfy his simple needs.

Thus, Eirik bided his time, waiting for the spark that would light the city ablaze...

Personality::

Eirik is a thoughtful soul, opposed to rash action, and a firm believer that the needs of the many almost always trump the needs of the few. He prefers to keep his distance and let others take the forefront of action, but even he can be pressed into action. And his current environment provides all too many acts of small cruelty that threaten to force his hand.

I'm not sure what this is but it sounds interesting...

This is excellent as well.

I'll have to get back to you guys on timeline of recent events.

I've asked on the boards to people who have the .pdf so we'll see if they respond.

For now, let's assume the following:

a) public protest
b) seven edicts get issued one week prior to public protest
c) Thrune poster boy comes to town and establishes martial law two weeks prior public protest.
