Guardians of the Moonwhisper Heir (Inactive)

Game Master Luminiere Solas

The Baron Maximillian Moonwhisper's Neice has lived through a cursed birth, and because of her shadow tainted curse, cultists of Lamashtu desire to sacrifice the young girl and spread madness over Golarion.

2 people marked this as a favorite.

in the dark lands of Ustalav, Baron Maximillian Moonwhisper's Niece had a cursed birth, and traveling cultists of Lamashtu seek to sacrifice the young girl to thier goddess and spread madness over Golarion.

i am looking for 4-6 players. well rounded characters are more likely to be picked than one trick ponies. but that doesn't mean you should gimp yourself as a master of none. i can handle a bit of specialization, but please don't go too overboard with it.

Character Creation Guidelines.:

Write a minimum of 3 paragraphs Explaining your Connection to the Eccentric Baron Maximillian Moonwhisper and why you decided to protect his frail, young, shadow tainted niece, Lady Umbriere Nera Nox Astrum Lunas Moonwhisper.

character creation is 25 point buy with an additional feat, no starting attribute above 18 after racial modifiers and none below 8 after racial modifiers without a good reason. Key Word is After.

traits will not be used.

every PC also gets a DM boon upon finishing thier submission.

Allowed Races Are Core Races, plus any of the reasonable races from the first 2 bestiaries. stuff along the lines of Aasimaar, Normal Drow, and Fetchlings are fine. Drow Nobles, Svirneblin, and similar races of greater power are not permitted

Characters will start off 5th level with a starting equipment budget of 12,000 gold pieces, no more than 3,000 of which maybe spent on an individual item. if you want a custom item, you must propose it to me and show me the formula for the cost. obvious cheating like the ring of continuous true striking is not allowed. items may come from the allowed books for classes and feats.

Allowed books for classes and Feats include the Core Rulebook, the Advanced Player's Guide, Ultimate Magic and Ultimate Combat. but you must link me each piece of material you use so i can read it. called shots will not be allowed, but you may utilize piecemeal armor and firearms if you wish.

there will be no XP, you will level when i say you level.

even though no classes are truly banned, there are some i would advise against.:

i would advise against using the gunslinger and other gun using variants because firearms are currently kind of rare and wondrous thing recently discovered and thus wouldn't be as readily available in treasure hordes.

i would also advise that martial classes focus on more than just combat and keep an additional backup weapon or 2 of a different type. skills will be needed as well and not dumping charisma too low can save your life due to the expected travel and bargaining.

i wouldn't reccomend using the summoner class or similar class that uses extra creatures. it just doesn't make combat fun, and as a somewhat inexperienced DM, i don't wish to read the rules on eidolons.

i would advise against evil characters, but if you can explain a good case for your evil character, i might consider it. but please, no trigger happy homocidal psychopaths.

other notes:

the opponents will mostly be humanoid in anatomy, and expect few truly monstrous races to be used.

i may come across as a little brutal. so as a gift to the party, i offer a numerian defibrillator with 5 charges per day and a solar powered battery. functions as a true ressurection spell but the charges recover each day at noon. due to it's wierd design and seal of Baron Moonwhisper, it cannot be sold.

Social Encounters will be fairly important as well. they won't be the primary focus, but they will offer thier own rewards based on how you accomplish them.

i know that naming a character is a difficult process, if i use names that sound Sueish, Cliche, or Unoriginal, it is because i didn't want to put up too much effort in naming

some NPCs will not be statted, Such as Her Excellency. her Excellency was too ill to complete her first bard level.

the auditions will last until Monday, December 12th, 2011.

Um... give me a bit I think I might like this one.

Sczarni

I would love a chance at this Adventure: it sounds great! I'll put something together and post it ASAP!

enthusiasm is welcome.

couple of questions regarding tying our characters in to the game:

Is this Baron an actual person, or somebody made up? if the former, where can I find info on him? If the latter, what can you tell us about the good Baron??

Also, would being a relative be a good thing, poor choice, or something indifferent??

It sounds interesting, and I will see if I can work up a character.

the baron is somebody made up for the campaign.

he's an eccentric extravagant middle aged fetchling male who plans to keep his niece alive because she is the closest thing he has to an heir. he is a kind and welcoming fellow and always loves to have a touch of the exotic. he prefers to be called "Uncle Max" and enjoys positive minded fellows. he raised his niece like she was his daughter and he obscesses over her well being to the point of insanity. he also has plenty of embelished stories that most people don't take very seriously which further accent his eccentricy, and he always thinks up new innovative ideas that almost no one accepts. his status as baron is rather laughable. he lives in a mansion at the edge of Caliphas, and children really like him.

being related to him wouldn't quite be bad, it would mean a few things, some people would expect you to be as eccentric as he, and young children would like you like they like "Uncle Max". most bards would enjoy your relative's stories and would ask you to get his "autograph".

being related would be good if you liked the attention, but it could be a hinderance if you wish to go incognito.

Definitely interesting :)

I do have an idea for a rogue / gunslinger actually. The main tie-in would be a debt of honor he's honoring from his teacher to the Baron as his teacher was killed on the way to see the baron.

Thoughts?

a multiclass rogue/gunslinger could work. the game isn't technically gestalt. but i could see that working. get started on the concept and i will look into it. i may consider giving a masterwork advanced firearm as a DM boon.

Class: Cross Blooded Rakasha/Serpentine Razmiran Priest
Race: I'm having a hard time, any of these three would work well for me, but so would human:
Aasimar is neat on the false divine angle. If I go with Aasimar then I'm thinking he might be called (probably falsely) 'one of Razmir's Children' and that the Baron has saved him from a life of wonderful luxury... and lies, deceit and back stabbing. He would be serving on the baron's staff as a hiding place and still has mixed feelings on what exactly happened (not that he knows everything that happened with his 'rescue' anyways).

Dhampir I'm not so sure about the story to go with this one.

Strix would have been an 'angel' for Razmir. He never really believed in the faith and new better, but the money was good, the ability to use, abuse and lose humans was even better. Ultimately he started to be more of a headache than the faith deemed him worth and he left before things got bad. I'm not too sure how to tie in the baron on this one though.

@Abraham

all 3 races could work. i will leave that up to you. i will try to come up with a fitting DM boon.

how do you feel about a free Domain tied to your sorcerer level? i was thinking of Trickery, but i will let you propose alternatives if you wish. the domain spells would be gained as spells known when you gain the appropriate spell level, treated as on your spell list, and use your normal sorcerer slots, and you would have the requisite domain powers.

i think it fits the angel of Razmir idea. Trickery.

it would also work for the son of Razmir as well. we could combine ideas from the Aasimaar and the Strix concepts.

how about a celestial blooded strix who is falsely proclaimed to be the son of Razmir and once lived as one of his "Angels"?. we could combine ideas from the 2.

basically, otherwise a strix, but has a hint of celestial blood and maybe could have features pulled from either or.

Liberty's Edge

Marking this for review. Will probably have an idea or two to pitch to you tomorrow.

Development question: how much of the game will take place in Ustalav? I'm thinking of gothic-horror heroes (Monster hunters, Frankenstein-esque alchemists), but wanted to make sure I was on the right track.

it will most likely start in ustalav, but expect a lot of travel, you might leave for a bit, return, leave again, return again. you are essentially escorts for a youth on the run from the cultists of Lamashtu. so expect some globetrotting. but gothic horror heroes are fine. if you take the name and concept from a well known literary character, i don't mind. most of the encounters, combat and social alike will be mostly humanoid. there may be the occasional abberration or other creature. but don't expect Cthulu or stuff like that.

Think I'll go with Inquisitor as I was playing one in a game that seems to have died and I really like the class a lot, not sure what race just yet.

Um... wow let me think...

Alright how about this then:

Outsider(Native)
+2 Charisma, +2 Wisdom: Aasimars are insightful, confident, and personable.
Normal Speed: Aasimars have a base speed of 30 feet.
Darkvision: Aasimars can see in the dark up to 60 feet.
Skilled: Aasimars have a +2 racial bonus on Diplomacy and Perception checks.
Flight: Strix have a fly speed of 60 feet (average).
Low-Light Vision: Strix can see twice as far as humans in conditions of dim light.

If not I'll probably go with Aasimar.

Feats I'm looking at:
1 - Magical Aptitude
3 - False Casting
5 - Spell Bluff

Class Abilities through level 20:

A crossblooded sorcerer has one fewer spell known at each level (including cantrips) than is presented on Table: Sorcerer Spells Known. Furthermore, the conflicting urges created by the divergent nature of the crossblooded sorcerer’s dual heritage forces her to constantly take some mental effort just to remain focused on her current situation and needs. This leaves her with less mental resolve to deal with external threats. A crossblooded sorcerer always takes a –2 penalty on Will saves.
Class Skill: Diplomacy, Disguise.
Bonus Spells Aid (3rd), Remove Disease (5th) charm person (7th), detect scrying (9th), hold monster (11th), mass suggestion (13th), greater polymorph (15th), mind blank (17th), dominate monster (19th).
Bonus Feats: Combat Casting, Combat Reflexes, Deceitful, Deft Hands, Persuasive, Silent Spell, Skill Focus (Bluff), Stealthy. : Arcane Armor Mastery, Arcane Armor Training, Deceitful, Detect Expertise [UM], Empower Spell, Light Armor Proficiency, Martial Weapon Proficiency, Stealthy.
Bloodline Arcana: Your powers of compulsion can affect even bestial creatures. Whenever you cast a mind-affecting or language-dependent spell, it affects animals, magical beasts, and monstrous humanoids as if they were humanoids who understood your language. Bloodline Arcana: Add half your sorcerer level to the Spellcraft DC for others to identify spells you cast. If their checks fail by 5 or more, they mistakenly believe you are casting an entirely different spell (selected by you when you begin casting).
False Piety(Ex): At 1st level, a Razmiran priest gains Knowledge (religion) and Perform as class skills, but loses Appraise and Fly as class skills. He adds half his sorcerer level to Use Magic Device checks to activate spell trigger and spell completion items that use divine spells. He gains False Focus as a bonus feat. In addition to replacing Appraise and Fly as class skills, this ability replaces the priest’s Eschew Materials bonus feat.
Silver Tongue (Su): At 1st level, you can draw upon your outsider heritage to spin amazingly convincing lies. Activating this ability is a swift action. You gain a +5 bonus on one Bluff check made to convince another of the truth of your words (similar to using glibness). If a magical effect is used against you that would detect your lies or force you to speak the truth, the user of the effect must succeed on a caster level check (DC 10 + your sorcerer level) to succeed. Failure means the effect does not detect your lies or force you to speak only the truth. You can use this ability a number of times per day equal to 3 + your Charisma modifier.
Serpentfriend (Ex): At 3rd level, you can use speak with animals at will with reptilian animals (including various forms of dinosaurs, lizards, and other cold-blooded creatures), and you gain a viper familiar using your sorcerer level –2 as your effective wizard level.
Razmiran Channel (Su): At 9th level, the Razmiran priest can use his own magic to power spell completion and spell trigger items that use divine spells. He expends a sorcerer spell slot that is at least 1 level higher than the level of the spell he’s trying to activate, then makes a Use Magic Device check. If he succeeds, the item’s spell occurs and the item or charge is not expended. If he fails, nothing happens. Whether he succeeds or fail, his spell slot is expended. This ability replaces the bloodline power gained at 9th level.
Alter Self (Sp): At 15th level, you can change your shape into that of any humanoid at will. This ability acts like alter self, except you may remain in a chosen form as long as you want.
Scaled Soul (Su): At 20th level, you gain the shapechanger subtype, and you can assume the form of a reptilian humanoid (as alter self ) or snake of Diminutive to Huge size (as beast shape III) at will. You retain the power of speech and the ability to use somatic spell components when transformed. You also become immune to poison and paralysis. You may use serpent’s fang as often as desired, and you may choose to inflict damage to any ability score.

an Inquisitor should be fine. you can modify your current 5th level inquisitor for all i care.

Abraham, the race combo is fine. it sounds good actually. i noticed you also forgot the freebie feat (which replaces the traits)

DM Boon

Angel of Razmir

in your service as an angel of Razmir, you have learned to mimic one of the key abilities of a cleric to augment your cover. you may channel (your choice at character creation) positive or negative energy a number of times per day equal to 3 plus your charisma modifier as a cleric of a level equal to your sorcerer level.

For Arkknight's Rogue/Gunslinger

DM Boon

This is My Teachers Gun!

this well crafted advanced firearm bears your teachers name engraved in the side of the barrel, when wielding this masterwork gun, you are treated as having 2 extra grit points per day that may only be used with this gun. your familiarity with this gun also allows you to double the first range increment. you may reload the entire capacity of this gun as a swift action. all other wielders treat it as a normal masterwork advanced firearm of it's type. the base and masterwork cost of this gun have no impact on your starting wealth, however enchanting it requires you to pay the difference in price.

Wow -- in that case we'll put off spell bluff and take versatile channeling and selective channeling for the extra feat. Primary channeling will be negative.

So it'll be:
B -- Selective Channeling
1 -- Magical Aptitude
3 -- False Casting
5 -- Versatile Channeling(positive).

I think I'll keep the Heretic archetype, having fled from one faith to join Calistria. I'll probably change the Inquisition though, to either something else, or a new one. I'll also be keeping the archer/tracker aspects of the character as well.

I think I'll play a Fetchling. I like that race, and actually wouldn't mind being related to Uncle Max.

Hey!

A buddy and I will be doing a joint submission of characters that are friends. Mine will be an Aasimar woman, a reformed Thief (Rogue 1st) turned iconoclastic and atypical Paladin (Pally 4th). His character will most likely be a semi-reformed Rogue/Fighter.

If you see a problem with those concepts, please let me know. Thanks!

@stormraven, the concepts sound fine.

So Our Current Applicants

Abraham's Razmiran priest

Monkeygod's Inquisitor

Arcnights Gunslinger/Rogue

Stormraven's Paladin/Rogue

Stormravens friends Rogue/Fighter?

i beleive that is a fine setup. i can stat out the NPC Heir and we now have a full party.

Part of me wants to tell you to wait until the deadline you stated in the first post, cuz that's right thing to do.

The other part of me says "screw that noise. We have a hella sneaky party here, which is freakin awesome"...

Each of our characters are all sneaky/roguish in one way or another, which is hella badass.

screw that noise indeed. a sneaky party sounds awesome.

My bud is EbentheQuiet and he is a sneaky SOB. :) I know he's working on his character right now. Mine will be posted in a just a little while.

FWIW - this lineup of malcontents is cracking me up!

for storm ravens rogue paladin i was considering for a dm boon the following

dm boon:

your former life as a thief influences your current life . as a paladin you may stray one alignment step further than normal without penalty and you may add your paladin level to your rogue level for the purpose of calculating your sneak attack damage

That is a ROCKIN' Boon!

OK here is my Rogue/Pally.

I may switch out one of her feats and I'm not yet sure if I'm going with the Warrior of the Holy Light archetype or the standard version... but otherwise she is pretty good to go. Let me know if you'd like her storyline tweaked in any way to better fit what you have planned.

Sczarni

I am looking at playing an Alchemist with the mindchemist archetype.

Backstory-wise, I was hoping to be assistant to Baron Moonwhisper's tinkerer. The character loves to make things!

Feats:

1. Combat Expertise to keep him safe if he has to fight.
2. Craft Magic Arms and Armor
3. Craft Wondrous Items
4. Gunsmithing
5. Exotic Weapon Proficiency - Firearms.

I intend to play him (name uncertain as of yet, I like my names to mean something to the character's story) as an eccentric inventor and lab rat turned adventurer. He is very smart and show off his knowledge without meaning to. He has lived much of his life indoors, in a lab, and therefore has no guile or street smarts.

(Think of Doc from back to the future, but a little less insane :P)

Can I utilize my craft skills and all my lab time to create most of my gear pregame? Also, can you help steer my back-story in a way that doesn't step on any toes, but allows me to be a party to the Baron's eccentric reputation?

Hey all, I'm here, and Bear will be up some time this morning for submission. Right now I do plan on him being an ex-horse-thief rogue-fighter.

Sorry to make you wait... been dealing with a round of sickness for my little guy and my wife.

I like the feel of this campaign, Wolfman. Hope you like my submission when I can get him in.

@Stormraven, Udaya is fine. i figure we could let her use the proponed boon.

@Darksmokepuncher, write a character proposal and i may consider adding you. i may have to close recruitment early.

Sorry for the wait. So without further ado, I submit, Bear, a Varisian 'horse-trader'.
NOTE: the build in the profile are all wrong - they are from an older version of him. I'll change them if I get accepted. (which i sure hope I do).

As you lower your mug to the table, your eyes rise to meet those of the newcomer, who regards you with brilliantly bright blue eyes peering out from under a heavy brow, thick dark eyebrows, and a shaved head. He is a solid man - tall and thick-bodied - with powerful-looking arms capable of tirelessly working the finely made falchion peeking over his right shoulder. With his thick body and lack of hair, you could almost miss his elven heritage were it not for the slight tip to his ears and the brilliance of his eyes. His clothes marry a slight Varisian flair and some adopted Ustalav embellishments to an otherwise serviceable practicality… a dark bowler hat on his bald head, a brilliant rainbow of a sash tied around his neck, a simple white shirt tucked into dark pants which are in turn tucked into the heavy black boots of a man who travels. All of these are finished with a heavy leather, long black overcoat.
He extends one meaty hand in greeting, and you catch sight of arms nearly covered with colorful Varisian tattoos - birds in flight, running horses, words in a strange language. Your knuckles crack under his vice-like grip, and your grunt brings the slightest crook of a smile to the corner of his thick lips. Those briliant blue eyes regard you for two full breaths before he speaks.
"Call me Bear." His eyes drop to the cards on the table, "What are we playin'?"

Story:
The Beginning
Bear's story is mostly unremarkable. He is the second son (of five) of a fairly successful horse-trader (which, like all Varisian horse-traders, is one part horse thief). He and his brothers are about what you'd expect, too… rough, loud, and uncouth. His path was altered slightly in his teens when his older brother died in a terrible horse-fall, breaking his neck on impact. First-born gone, Bear became the ring-leader of his brothers and the inheritor of his father's meager possessions.

The Bonehead
A year ago, he got word that his youngest brother - who was known for landing in bizarre and dangerous situations from which he had no escape - had again landed himself in trouble in a small mining town called Baslwief. Bear, always the protective older brother, came to help him out, and spent the better part of a year trying to pay off the kid's debt, while said younger brother rots in prison (the lazy wank).

The Babe
When a chance to hit a big score in town came along, Bear couldn't' pass it up, but got in over his head. While dealing with all the fallout shenanigans, he met an exotic southern woman named Udaya.. the rest, as they say, is history.
He's been traveling with her ever since. "When you find something worth keeping, you stick with it, right?"

Physical Description:
Bear is tall for a Varisian, standing just under 6 feet in height. And, like his nick-name would indicate, he is built like a bear… barrel-chested and thick-limbed. He is well-tanned and well-tattooed over much of his body. His bright blue eyes sit in a face which unfortunately wears a slightly unintelligent look most of the time. Which is odd considering is above average mental capacity.

Motivation:
Money, Adventure, and Udaya… everything else is just gravy. *winks*

Deep down, he'd aways been an okay guy, and Udaya has been working on that. We'll say he's got chaotic and good leanings, but he's still a fairly pragmatic individual.

Additionally, because of Bear and his family's history of "horse-trading" (read swindling, conning, and straight-up horse-thievery) he's got a number of people looking for him in a number of towns in Varisia. This is why he's no longer in Varisia. (Wolfman, this is straight up, built in hooks if you need them in Varisia - or anywhere else, for that matter.) People are after him. He owes them money, horses, really any number of things, and Bear's not really up to paying them off.

Oh, yah, forgot to add this. Udaya dragged Bear along with her to the high-falutin' shin-dig where they met their new benefactor in Ustalav. At least he got some fancy new threads out of the deal. Bear actually loves the old guy, the best folks are all half off their rockers, right? Take our Udaya, here... crazy as a hell-cat, but hell if I'd change a thing about her. Bear's 'skills' have also been useful to Moonwhisper a time or two, especially since Bear seems to have so many of them.

Ahhh, wait. <sigh> No wonder it's so hard to get into a game on these forums. A recruitment thread that opens and closes in less than 18 hours and has 7+ characters already. Talk about laws of supply and demand.

Enjoy your game, it sounds like a blast.
