Summary of Important Posts:
I wanted to take a quick timeout to link back to a couple important posts that have info in them that you are still working on.

First are the three large posts that describe the vast majority of the Horn

Lower Caverns

Levels 1 and 2

Much of level 3

Next is Cardinal Thorn’s post where he described the mission, which is essentially to get the Tears of Achlys from Vetra-Kali.

And then you had info on the ritual and the rebuilding of the alchemical golem.

The Ritual

The alchemical golem

Also recall the oozes that you were going to get back to.

You've still missed some rooms on level 3, although I think you've covered levels 1 and 2.

Vosil sighs as Shade is banished. "She's going to be really, really annoyed about that, you know. She hates being stuck in the Plane of Shadows."

Figuring that he doesn't have anything to throw at the paladin, he focuses and summons a python to strangle the priest.

Bite, python: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (18) + 5 = 23

Grab, free grapple attempt: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (19) + 9 = 28

Constriction damage: 1d4 + 4 ⇒ (3) + 4 = 7

Unless his CMD is off the scale, that should stop any spellcasting!

Once Mordecai's spellcasting is finished a Hell hound appears out of nowhere. The creature breathes a cone of fire at the paladin and the priest.
Fire damage, ref DC 15 to halve : 2d6 ⇒ (5, 3) = 8

The hell hound is augmented and evolved (claws)

Once the summoning spell is off, Mordecai tries the Murderous Command on the paladin. " Since you're so keen on keeping that sword, would you kindly use on your priest friend there"

Bapho uses his action to disappear from sight.

Malleck normally does 1d10+4 dmg. Smiting, on your first hit against a Paladin, you should do 1d10+14, so critting is 2d10+28, rolling 2 7's makes that 42 damage. Check my numbers, but I think you just hit him for 42 damage.

Alright, so Taeral takes great effort and aids Malleck to hit Lord Havelyn.

Vosil summons a python which grapples Father Donnagin

Gertrart swings for the fences twice and misses (now that is where I was really expecting you guys to finish the good Lord)!

Reflex Havelyn: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (1) + 6 = 7 Fail
Reflex Donnagin: 1d20 + 2 - 2 ⇒ (1) + 2 - 2 = 1 Fail

See! Bad save rolls! Make sure to roll the reflex save for the Python

Will Havelyn: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (17) + 11 = 28 Success

Now my luck is back!

Ok, so we've had actions from Malleck, Gertrart, Taeral, Mordecai, and Vosil.

Just waiting on Xeram. Did Xixik do anything this round?

GM:

Havelyn – +1 to hit, +3 AC, +4 STR, +4 CON, Smite Shade, Bless Weapon, glittered, 63 DMG
Donnagin – +1 to hit, +4 STR, glittered, grappled, 21 DMG

Actually, to keep things moving, Xeram can give us both rounds of his actions when he can, and I'll retcon if something he did would have stopped Lord Havelyn.

Round 3 -

With 5 opponents next to him (going clockwise - Malleck, Python, Gertrart, Taeral, Hell Hound), Lord Havelyn unleashes a great cleave, starting with Malleck

Longsword: 1d20 + 19 ⇒ (8) + 19 = 27 Miss
DMG: 1d8 + 19 ⇒ (4) + 19 = 23

Having missed his first attack, his Great Cleave ends there.

He does a swift action to lay on hands for:

LOH: 3d6 ⇒ (6, 4, 3) = 13

Father Donnagin, himself damaged, and seeing Lord Havelyn take some damage chooses to Channel Positive Energy. There is some irony here, he chooses to exclude Gertrart and Malleck from the channel, which saves Malleck from taking positive energy damage.

Channel: 3d6 ⇒ (3, 5, 5) = 13 This damage stops the bleeding on the one guard, but no matter what, he's not getting up and into this fight, we're just gonna leave it with the two main good guys fighting your evilness.

The party is now up!

Great Cleave lowers his AC to 24 vs Malleck, and 21 vs everyone else.

GM:

Havelyn – +1 to hit, +3 AC, +4 STR, +4 CON, Smite Malleck, Bless Weapon, glittered, 37 DMG

While grappled he can even draw and attack with a weapon, provided it's one handed. I don't see how he can't reach his holy symbol.

With Xeram's magic missiles from last round and this, Lord Havelyn drops to the ground!

So far this round, we have: Malleck, Taeral, Xeram, Gertrart, Vosil.

Now we're waiting for Mordecai!

GM:

Round 3

Lord Havelyn down, the Hell hound moves to he next opponent - Father Donnagin.

Bite : 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (11) + 7 = 18

Claw : 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (5) + 7 = 12

Claw : 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (18) + 7 = 25
damage : 1d4 + 3 ⇒ (4) + 3 = 7

Mordecai himself watches the grappled priest, and believes this battle practically over. He prepares to sling a Fire bolt at the priest if he tries anything funny.
Ready action: Fire bolt

Round 4
The nameless Hell hound keeps mercilessly attacking the priest.
Bite : 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (1) + 7 = 8
Damage +fire : 1d8 + 3 + 1d6 ⇒ (8) + 3 + (4) = 15
Claw : 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (7) + 7 = 14
damage : 1d4 + 3 ⇒ (4) + 3 = 7
Claw : 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (11) + 7 = 18
damage : 1d4 + 3 ⇒ (4) + 3 = 7

The Hellhound hits with both the bite and the second claw, dealing a total of 15 damage.

Ok then, so the good guys are up, Father Donnagin goes to channel positive energy, which I believe Mordecai will interpret as "funny business."

Mordecai's readied action goes off:

firebolt: 1d20 + 1 + 1 ⇒ (20) + 1 + 1 = 22 Hit
DMG: 1d6 + 1 ⇒ (2) + 1 = 3

This leaves Father Donnagin "staggered" so he completes his channeling, which revives Lord Havelyn.

Channel: 3d6 ⇒ (3, 4, 1) = 8 Excluding Malleck and Gertrart

Lord Havelyn immediately does a swift action lay on hands to himself.

LOH: 3d6 ⇒ (6, 3, 1) = 10

He grabs his longsword, and will again attempt to great cleave. This time, starting with the python wrapped around Father Donnagin.

Longsword: 1d20 + 17 - 4 ⇒ (9) + 17 - 4 = 22
DMG: 1d10 + 12 ⇒ (10) + 12 = 22

I'm guessing that hits a grappled/grappling python?

On to Gertrart then:

Longsword: 1d20 + 17 - 4 ⇒ (11) + 17 - 4 = 24
DMG: 1d10 + 12 ⇒ (3) + 12 = 15

Another hit I believe?

Taeral:

Longsword: 1d20 + 17 - 4 ⇒ (19) + 17 - 4 = 32
DMG: 1d10 + 12 ⇒ (2) + 12 = 14

That threatens a critical:

Longsword: 1d20 + 17 - 4 ⇒ (18) + 17 - 4 = 31
DMG: 1d10 + 12 ⇒ (8) + 12 = 20

Confirmed?

Now to the hellhound:

Longsword: 1d20 + 17 - 4 ⇒ (14) + 17 - 4 = 27
DMG: 1d10 + 12 ⇒ (6) + 12 = 18

Another hit?

And finally to Malleck:

Longsword: 1d20 + 20 - 4 ⇒ (1) + 20 - 4 = 17
DMG: 1d10 + 19 ⇒ (5) + 19 = 24

A miss on Malleck then!

Well, that was fun. So finish him off now! Sir Havelyn is still on the ground, so you gain +4 to hit him with melee attacks. He was taking the -4 for attacking from the ground.

If the swing from Lord Havelyn killed the python, then Donnagin is no longer grappled, and the Hellhound missed all three attacks. If the Python survived, then the hellhound's final attack will have connected.

Spoiler:

Havelyn – +1 to hit, +3 AC, +4 STR, +4 CON, Smite Malleck, Bless Weapon, glittered, 77 DMG
Donnagin – +1 to hit, +4 STR, glittered, grappled, 37

Attack spells that require an attack roll can crit too.
It probably wouldn't matter much, but the firebolt can be rolled a crit confirm for.

Xeram points at the paladin again.
"Who gave you permission to come back? Here, a present for you."
Magic Missile: 3d4 + 3 ⇒ (2, 4, 4) + 3 = 13

Crit confirm on the firebolt:

firebolt: 1d20 + 1 + 1 ⇒ (20) + 1 + 1 = 22
DMG: 1d6 + 1 ⇒ (4) + 1 = 5

Confirmed!

Which means that rather than "staggered" Father Donnagin would have been DOWN and DYING and never had the chance to channel, and revive, etc.!

Nice catch Xeram!

Ok, so that final round of attacks from Lord Havelyn never happened!

Just because Taeral doesn't like to take damage, let alone critical damage, Gertrart is invisible due the vanish spell. So would Lord Havelyn taken the swing at the invisible Gertrart or not. If he did, then it would have a 50% miss chance, which could end the cleaving proccess if he misses. Or if he decides not to attack the invisible Gertrart, then the attack on Gertrart would have gone to Taeral and the critical hit onto the Hell Hound. I personnally like this second option as it still maintains the great cleave and Taeral is not down form the damage. LOL

Edit: I was working on a way to avoid the crit damage also. :P

Lord Havelyn believes Mitra was on his side, so he'd have done it as described.

Let's see, 50% miss chance right, so high hits:

Dream Sequence Miss Chance: 1d100 ⇒ 53

He made the miss chance, and would have rolled on through, Mitra was with him, and he knew it!

Your heroic efforts to sabotage the garrison at Balentyne have proven incredibly successful. For those that care, I record you as having scored 42 Victory Points. The hordes of Sakkarot Fire-Axe storm the keep, killing the defenders, and move on to sack the town, thus leaving quite a bit of treasure for you. I will post up a list of treasure and where it comes from, so you can have some emotional attachment to parts of it if you wish.

After the fighting is done and moved on, you break the clay seal given to you by Adrastus Thorne. Very shortly afterwards...

Roughly how many guards are left in the keep? I would like to use our Iron Circlet ability to appear as guardsmen, mid rank, and Taeral's knowledge gleaned from small book of military regulations to rally the remaining troops to the keeps courtyard, using the demagogue's gather crowd ability. From a promontory, you can see the great bugbear horde camped south of the Watch Wall. Balentyne yet burns behind you. “Still, this will not be enough. Balentyne may be broken but Talingarde is yet strong. Soon word will reach the south. The Heartland and the great cities of the Cambrian Bay will marshal their armies. They will meet Sakkarot on the field and it will be far too close to a fair fight. We must do something about that."

"It does burn doesn't it. I had it in the coals for a good amount of time to get it that hot."
"It's just a brand. I've seen them before. But don't let anyone else see it. It will mean your death."
"Now hold this pin while I hammer the hinge."
"There. You are free now master Slate."
"Where? How should I know, I just know you should not be here."
"Ask? What can you possibly offer? Goodness knows if any of us will get out of this town alive."
"OK, if you do, I'll ask one thing. Just remember this one thing?" "I set you free. I own you. I will be back to collect."

OR:
"Are you less than Eight?" If the dwarf doesn't seem like he wants to join, but honestly if the dwarves want to fight, Gertart will let them fight starvation.

Ok, there was a lot of non-magic, non-MW stuff on the guards that got overrun. As well, lots of random junk around the keep. The horde looted that stuff as they came through. However, specific stuff left around the keep that you can keep is:

Barnabas the dwarf had: masterwork greatsword, heavy crossbow, 20 bolts, half-plate, belt of mighty constitution +2, cloak of resistance +1, masterwork thieves tools, masterwork engineering tools, silver holy symbol to a dwarven god of smiths and engineers

Captain Barhold had: tanglefoot bags (2), +1 greatsword, dagger, sap, masterwork full plate

Father Donnagin: +1 breastplate, tunic of careful casting, heavy steel shield, masterwork heavy mace, silver holy symbol

Tacitus lab: I don't believe you took the cauldron of brewing last time, right?

Watchtower treasury:

  • 4650 gp in Talirean coinage neatly sorted into 100 gp purses.
  • A small box containing a dozen silver and sapphire military commendation medals (worth 75 gp each – 900 gp in total).
  • Ten “double eagles” minted to celebrate the birth of Bellinda, Princess of Talingarde, eighteen years ago. These large coins are solid gold and weigh a pound each (50 gp each – 500 gp in total). They are meant to be used as official rewards to non-military personnel.
  • A sack that contains the “petty cash” – 300 gp in mixed coinage (mostly silver and copper)
  • Seven ornate chalices adorned with gold, silver and a variety of semi-precious stones. These are gifts official visitors have presented the commander over the years. The chalices vary in value but in total are worth 1050 gp.
  • 5 potions of cure light wounds (securely wrapped)
  • 2 elixirs of truth (also securely wrapped)

Lord Thomas Havelyn: A family “bible” of the House of Havelyn. This ancient holy book in praise of Mitra also features a chart detailing Lord Havelyn’s family tree. One name has been blotted out. That name ‘Samuel Havelyn, Cardinal of Mitra’ can still barely be discerned. This antique book with its fine leather bindings and gold fittings is quite valuable (450 gp) but would be almost impossible to sell since it so obviously belongs to the Lord Havelyn. It can be vandalized for its gold fittings which are still worth 50 gp on its own.; full plate (see below), masterwork heavy steel shield, masterwork longsword (“Ballinger”, his father’s sword with a holy symbol of Mitra built into the cross guard), headband of alluring charisma +2, masterwork dagger (marking him as a Knight of the Alerion).

Dangit, ok a slight retcon on a specific subject. As Malleck kills Lord Havelyn his magic armor transforms before your eyes. It is no longer shining plate armor. Instead it become black, baroque armor adorned with the infernal iconography of Lord Asmodeus. It is now +1 dastard full plate. Truly, the Dark Lord of Nessus watches these deeds.

Oh, and a rule change: Magic armor and weapons will resize themselves for the wielder!

I would be interested in these for RP reasons (disguises, blackmail etc.)

Mordecai stands by the railing of the ship, gazing into the horizon where the silhouette of Balentyne is lit by the flames of the invading army. The ship has already taken distance to the city, but wind carries the smoke and the smell of burning city to the river. It smells of burning wood and burning flesh.

It smells of death.

It smells of chaos.

Such waste, the tiefling finds himself thinking. Destruction cannot be the will of Asmodeus. If they would just understand to cast down the Mirtan belief, and overthrow their foolish leaders. So many needless deaths could have been avoided.

And then Mordecai feels a small weight on his shoulder, accompanied by flapping of small wings. ”Yes. Rotting corpses do not serve the Dark Prince, but living obedient men do,” the invisible imp whispers - acting its counsellor role. ”But sometimes, a show of force is needed to put the flock into their rightful place”

Mordecai nods and smiles. Yes. This is just beginning. Talingarde shall be next. Soon, they shall bend their knee to their new lords…

Twelve days. It will be quiet and it will be long. Smoke fills the air. A red and golden glow marks the clouds.

Death and dominion has come to these lands. Slow for now. But soon... soon this will all be at their feet. And he will crush it just as swiftly as he will bring it to its knees. Everything he was. Everything he once hoped to be was left in that prison, he was born a new and he will destroy those who once wished him gone.

They are not prepared

He grins to himself. Yes. Things are about to change for the worst.

Gertrart puts some of his new skills to use, particularly the sailing bits he learned on the trip north. Occupying some of the time with the work feels good and he exalts in the exercise. Too bad about the orders to burn that other ship, he thinks. Such a waste that I hope will end when we have brought down Talingarde and its nobles. He makes a point to learn as much about this ship as anyone is willing to talk about.
