Greyhawk 5E: Shadows of the Sheldomar (Inactive)

Game Master tribeof1

It is Common Year 591 and shadows hang over the Sheldomar Valley. The Grand Duchy of Geoff is a shattered land, conquered by giants, its people refugees in surrounding kingdoms. To the north, south and east, evil stirs in dark corners once thought safe. And in the border town of Hochoch, knights and nobles squabble in their keeps while a handful of adventurers meet in the Poxy Doxie, intent on a more immediate goal: gold.

Kierdan takes a deep breath after Rolen's shot and, for a brief moment, he is relieved at the apparent resolution of the crisis. His nascent happiness is crushed, though when he sees the hogbgoblin priest turn, with an arrow through his check, towards Rolen's sister. Knowing he has only moments to save the girl, Kierdan shouts a brief prayer and points his open palm toward the villain.

i was gonna try persuasion before the fracas, but i was at work. i could take a shot if needed. i would say i could try persuasion first but i imagine the party would largely have beaten my initiative. so, the below is to finish off the enemy with eldritch blast

ranged touch: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (19) + 6 = 25

The priest's screams rise into an inhuman wail as he leaps forward, whatever humanity he once possessed unrecognizable as blood covers half his face in a curtain.

Speaking a quick incantation, Koralyn appears behind him. Her sword arcs out, but the slash glances off his ribs rather than severing his spine, and he jerks forward. He doesn't have a chance to harm the girl, however, as Alistair, Kierdan and Eldramin launch a volley of multi-hued magic that pierces him in half a dozen places, leaving his body a smoking ruin that tumbles gracelessly to the ground.

The dagger falls from his lifeless hand. Before it hits the ground, the ragged woman snatches it up, then drives it into the priest's blackened skull. She spits, then kicks the corpse viciously.

"Rot in hell with your gods-damned serpents, you bastard," she says, before turning to your group. Battered, bruised and disheveled, she is still beautiful, and you can see a hardness that no doubt kept her alive through her ordeal. She sobs and shudders as she sees Rolen, then runs forward and throws her arms around him.

"Brother! Many nights I prayed for you to come, but didn't think it would ever happen. I thought I'd die, and Abramo would raise me from the dead to continue my torture. Get me out of this place ... the stench is more than I can bear."

Karolyn seems genuinely touched by Rolen's dedication to his sister and basks for a moment in the rightness of it before moving to secure the room and ensure there are no other dangers.

Koralyn searches the room, but finds nothing else that appears to pose any threat. In addition to the jade statue and the crude stone imitations, the only objects of note are the pair of brass-bound chests and a trapdoor on the floor near the jade statue that appears to open onto the level below.

The chests don't appear to be trapped or even locked - kicking them open, Koralyn finds only a few dozen coins: 12 gp, 14 sp and 29 cp in all.

Rolen's sister pipes in as Koralyn examines the meager hoard.

"They emptied them last week, shipped away to the cult's stronghold in the swamps. Or at least, that's what Abramo told Misha and the others. He talked later about saving some of it back, buried in the undercroft ... but I'm not sure where, or if it would be safe to retrieve ... he threatened sometimes with locking me down there, and implied something might eat me ..."

She shudders, but stifles a sob to continue.

"It all goes to the Mistress, out in the Rushmoors. The gold, and the people they kidnap. She's ... horrible. But the people they take, somehow she makes them evil, makes them do her bidding. The ones that she can't turn she kills, or eats, I don't know. Whatever she does, it didn't work on me. I don't know what was going to happen, but Abramo saw me ... He was there delivering prisoners and treasure. He asked her if he could have me, and brought me here ... It was awful. But I think it would have been worse if I'd become one of them."

Dragomir eyes the trapdoor.

Friends, I don't think we're in a fit state to be exploring further -we've burned a lot of our strength getting this far. What say you that we get Rolen's sister to the Mayors and sit guard on this door overnight then delve deeper in the morn?

I see I created some confusion regarding the trap door -- Recall, you ascended to the second floor before fighting the skeletons, wolves and packmasters, then later the hobgoblins and the (human) priest Abramo. The trapdoor leads down to the ground floor, not the basement. But you did locate a couple of trapdoors earlier (one in the priestess's room in the SE, another in one of the monk cells north of the sanctuary) that likely lead into the temple dungeons.

"The mayor? Yes, the mayor is safe ... Abramo talked of him, planned to kill or kidnap him but hadn't found the time," Rolen's sister says, exhaustion finally catching up to her as she lies in her brother's arms. "It's the sheriff you must be wary of ... and the inn ... the Golden Grain. They gather there ... to plot."

Alistair pulls out his hooks and catgut, but decides to have a look at the dead priest before setting to work on the party's wounds. The man's clothes are filthy, torn and stained. But the chainmail he wears beneath his robes is pristine, with a luster unlike common iron. Mithral, Alistair determines, although of human craftmanship that falls somewhat short of the silk-like mail shirts woven by the elves. A suit of mithral chainmail provides the same level of protection as mundane chainmail, but has no Strength requirement and does not impose disadvantage on Stealth checks.

Hanging from a knotted leather cord inside the man's shirt, Alistair finds a tarnished silver medallion carved to resemble a coiled serpent. Chips of garnet embedded as the eyes flash unnaturally as Alistair pulls the necklace into the light, and the carving grows warm in he wizard's hand for a moment. But nothing else happens after that -- Alistair surmises some command word must be needed to activate the medallion, a mystery that will require further research.

Also -- Experience time! You each gain 1,250 XP from foes defeated on the second floor and for rescuing Rolen's sister. That should put you at 5,250 XP each.

Nice find on the Mithril armour! Now if someone can just find me some plate mail?

With the issue of the trap door sorted, and that the dungeon trap doors are in the priestesses room and the monk cells, Dragomir proposes that Alstair, Eldramin and himself pile junk on the one in the monk cells and then stake out the one in the priestesses room, waiting for the others to return and resting up before delving deeper. He also recommends that once the party is back from the mayors (something that should take no more than 10 to 20 minutes) that the returning people bar the temple gates from within to prevent any villagers trying to liberate the place.

So, it looks like Rolen and Lady Koralyn are off to the Mayor's. Eldramin can either stay or join us.

Rolen nods to the others.

I am very grateful for all of your help. I will return post haste. Come sister, let us get you to safety and then out of this town. I need to reek vengeance on those abducting other kind folk like yourself.

Rolen awaits those who would join him and heads back to the mayor's.

I think Dragomir has a sound plan. We pile debris on top of one trap door, thereby sealing it from above. Then we will set a watch on the door in the priestess's room as we await your return.

Lady Koralyn Nightstar wrote:

No, it remains heavy armor, which requires proficiency to use without penalty. Elven chain (an elf-crafted mithral chain shirt that can be worn without proficiency) is a different thing in 5E.

Having settled on a plan, Koralyn departs with Rolen and his rescued sister.

The rest of the party keeps watch on the trapdoors into the temple basement.

Alistair continues his examination of the amulet, but is hampered by a lack of necessary components. (Identify requires a 100 gp pearl.) Using detect magic, he detects auras of divination and transmutation magic, but is unable to pinpoint the necklace's exact function.

The light is fading as Koralyn and Rolen make their way to the mayor's home. The mayor's liege man, Traver, meets them at the door, ushering them inside as he scans the street, wary of prying eyes. Zakarias waits in the sitting room, a sword at his waist as he stares out the windows facing the millpond.

"I never doubted you would succeed, my friend, but still it seems like a miracle," he says, retrieving a thick blanket from one of the couches and draping it around Rolen's sister. (Whose name is _____?) "Traver, fetch some tea, and cakes. She is half-starved."

He focuses on the young woman for a few minutes, then turns to the others.

"Traver and I will keep her safe. We can retreat to the cellar, if needed, and hold it even if they set fire to the house. But tell me, what of the temple? Were all there tainted? How much blood was spilt?"

Sister's name is Allana Philandril.

Abramo ran the Cult at the temple, and he had designs on your capture as well. We dispatched many, including him, but there is more investigation into the catacombs below that I must return for. There is a stronghold in the Rushmoors, and the whole show is operated by some Mistress that possesses the captured who are sent there. All of the gold for the operations are sent to the swamp stronghold. Finally, Allana can fill you in more, but we must be wary of the Sherriff and the Golden Grain Inn where the cultists meet to plot.

I appreciate your offer to safeguard Allana, but I would prefer that she be secreted out of town so that you would not have to. Do you have any connections in a nearby town that could take Allana in temporarily, until I can settle her somewhere permanently?

Those in the temple were armed and ready for us as we entered and we were hard pressed from the start. While we shed no blood outside of combat none of the enemy surrendered and we were forced to put many of the down. Some of our number are solders and while I have counciled mercy,it is not their nature to them to spare those who raise weapons against them. We fought undead and trained wolves. Some of the monks were spared are are tied up and waiting for us to complete our search of the place. We could deliver them to you if you would take them. We still have to search and secure the cellar before our work there is complete, but we must rest and recoup before that attempt. Then we must choose to either confront the sheriff or look for that stronghold in the Rushmoors. Perhaps we will find more clues that will guide that decision.

I too think we have some prisoners but might be misremembering. It is not Koralyn's goal to mislead in any way here.

Pausing to listen to the mayor's council Koralyn will add Rolen and I must get back to our friends. They are hurt and I shudder to think what might happen if they are attacked in their current state without us there. Wish us well. she adds as she prepares to head back.

Two monks and two hobgoblins are prisoners. You killed three monks, the priestess Misha, the kennel master, four hobgoblins and the priest, Abramo.

Right. Thanks for that update. Koralyn would have related exactly this expressing regret about the monks but explaining that the priest and priestess were now totally evil and devoted to their evil deity.

"Abramo? We were friends growing up ... He was a gentle soul. I cannot even imagine what sort of enchantment could turn him to evil and depravity," Zakarias says. "I am sorry he had to die, but you are to be commended for saving those you could."

"We must be cautious, however. Any remaining cultists may try to use these deaths to turn the village against us. Allana can testify to the evil perpetrated at the temple, but we should try to neutralize a few more of the cult leaders before going public. If you can secure the temple we can discuss who to move against after that."

The mayor rubs his eyes, tired but refusing to yield to exhaustion.

"As for escorting Allana elsewhere, I would if I could. But Hochoch is our closest civilized neighbor, and you yourselves know how dangerous that road has become. Everyone we sent to seek help disappeared, and I fear we would put her in greater danger venturing outside Orlane while the cult remains active."

"Perhaps once you clear the temple we could move there, where the walls and gate might provide an additional measure of security?"

Rolen grimaces...

Your basement will have to do. We are off to the temple and then the Sheriff. Remember, keep her safe, and be wary of the Sheriff, and steer clear of the Golden Grain until we can provide proper support to you.

Rolen kisses his sister gently on the forehead. A true dichotomy to his normal cold, calculating and pure killer demeanor.

Stay safe, sister, until I come for you.

He takes out a dagger and hands it to her.

The bolt slides shut with a solid clank as Rolen and Koralyn exit the mayor's house. With the shutters closed, the structure appears relatively secure from the south, but little in this town would stand up to a sustained assault.

Moving quickly, the pair back toward the church, but not without glancing back to the west, where several figures stand watching from the road near the constabulary and the Golden Grain Inn. They make no move to follow, however, and Rolen and Koralyn make it to the chapel unmolested.

Securing the gates, the pair pass into the first-floor sanctuary, where the rest of the group waits for them. The four surviving prisoners are awake and gagged. The hobgoblins glare silently. The monks, one of them injured, chew on the gags in their mouths, their eyes rolling wildly as they struggle against the bonds.

There has been no sign of movement at either of the trapdoors, one concealed beneath a mat in a monk's cell, the other beneath the priestess's bed. Both trapdoors appear to have been used with some frequency, but there are no recent tracks or other evidence that they've been opened in the past several hours.

Elven, Dwarven, Halfling and Gnome are all spoken by various citizens of Geoff. Orc, Goblin and Giant would also be appropriate languages to have learned in the wake of the invasion. Abyssal, Draconic and Celestial have specialized uses.

The wounded monk merely groans as Rolen conducts his interrogation. The other smiles, mad eyes rolling in his skull.

His cackling becomes so intense he has trouble breathing - without an exorcism or some other magical intervention, you don't expect his mind to clear enough to be useful.
