DM Nerk |
Welcome Zoriya and Tomag:
I'd like for us (as well as the current players) to talk a bit about what's been happening to you.
I'm thinking your ship was separated from the main fleet in the first storms that struck.
Badly damaged, it limped along until you reached a small island.
There was a dispute about whether to return to Absalom or press on, hoping to reach the New World.
Eventually the ship set sail for Absalom, leaving the few who wished to go on with one of the ship's boats and a supply of food and fresh water sufficient to last them for a few weeks.
Through various adventures, they made their way to the bay where the expedition was originally intended to go to find a community of castaways at Newspring.
Cueta Guiding Star |
Ooooh! Ooooh! Oooooh! Cueta favors it because it means MOAR BOATS!
Seriously though, I think it is a good way to introduce the new guy and gal.
What sort of adventures have they had?
Will they be bringing more people than Tomag, Zoriya and the boys, or has there experiences been even rougher than the Harpy's people?
EDIT: For clarification, the Harpy's people scuttled a short distance from shore, made camp, were attacked by sharkteethed cannibals and then either abducted and eaten, abducted and worse, or holed up in a cave, at which point they were rescued by those of us from the Golden Pegasus.
Zoriya Yelizaveta |
Hahaha, I am terrible at finding things!
That sounds good to me. Zoriya would have taken the gamble of staying. I imagine she would have tried to function as a group leader and sometimes healer.
On their adventures, would they have come across anything of note, especially related to things in the main Newspring plot? If they traveled through hobgoblin territory, for example, or encountered signs of other indigenous populations?
@Tomag, we should work out what--if any--relationship our characters have. Off the bat, I'd say Zoriya is slightly mystified by his niceness.
Vallen Silverclasp |
Welcome Zoriya! I just wanted to say hello- I'll post more later.
Tomag |
I am ALSO terrible at finding things.
Tomag would be dead-set on helping out the people who were shipwrecked, so he would definitely have decided to be left behind, possibly even if he had to jump off the boat and swim to shore.
@Zoriya: That's probably a good start. He's got the heart of gold thing going pretty well for him. I'd imagine he'd get along great with your character's kids, if they aren't terrified of him being a huge half-orc. D:
Vallen Silverclasp |
Welcome Tomag!
I enjoy the backstory you've come up with, Nerk. They would have come from the West however, as we've been up and down the Eastern shore of the bay. (What are we calling the bay again? Lillend Bay?)
Edit: Actually, they could have come from the east after we cleared out the Kuru I supposed?
Zoriya Yelizaveta |
@Vallen--hi! Nice to be here. :) Having been over the campaign, I'm thinking one thing Vallen and Zoriya can definitely bond over is hair care. Braids and fancy ornaments for everyone! Or at least the aesthetically superior people, like them.
@Gair--so am I.
@Tomag--Vasily and Koschei grew up with frost trolls and winter wolves and crazy ice fey, a huge half-orc is refreshingly nonthreatening. Koschei in particular will be fascinated by his hugeness and tusks, and will probably have demanded piggybacks quite often. Vasily is a little shyer, but he'll come around.
And if Tomag is good with her children, he's good with Zoriya, even if his altruism is still odd. He's definitely the kind of steady defender type that you want in this situation, so she'll have made an effort to make sure they have a secure alliance at least. Their goals - keeping people alive - coincide, which ought to help.
General note: if you are big and tough looking, Koschei will try to climb on you and/or bite you and/or learn your warrior ways.
Vallen Silverclasp |

YES! This will definitely be a point of bonding. Vallen is obsessed with being clean unless he's working. We will have to share tips on keeping our hair looking luscious in these trying times.
Also, Vallen loves kids- he has quite a soft spot for them. He'll probably try to teach your boys a thing or two if he's around them. (Unless they are trying to eat him. We had an incident with kuru children trying to eat us...)
I foresee our two characters getting along in most matters.
Tomag |
Tomag and Zoriya are going to get along great, then. Tomag'll be alright with Koschei climbing all over him, because he definitely will appreciate people who don't shy away from his ugly mug.

Perfect, we'll have to set up some sort of mentoring program and get him paired with Bern :P

Septimus on the other hand approves of any plan that includes more bodies between him and the main fight.
Vallen Silverclasp |
Oh, by the way (as we mentioned in the main thread) we have 2PCs, which are cohorts that allow us to be in two places at once. Typically one PC will be in Newspring and the other will be exploring/adventuring.
Vallen prefers to stay in Newspring (he keeps getting roped into adventures though)
Istiel |
Whereas Istiel the slightly racist (maybe a lot racist) and terse elven warrior would like to explore the world and fight things.
You'll probably get your own 2PCs so you can choose between having your main character in Newspring or not.
Istiel |
She doesn't say anything out loud, but you can tell she has a disdain for any non-elf. She especially dislikes humans for their impulsiveness and greatly dislikes human children (sorry Zoriya). Dwarves are about the only other race she respects due to their foresight and their ability to create lasting crafts.
Of course, she is an elf, which are masters of hypocrisy. Certain humans are "different", she would say, such as Gair, whom she greatly respects for his battle prowess.
Zoriya Yelizaveta |

Ugh, yes, the damp is hellish. As soon as Zoriya gets her hands on some proper equipment it's soap and hair products right after acid and alchemist's fire.
Child warrior schemes
Well, people let halflings fight...
In all seriousness, Zoriya will be a total helicopter mom until she chills out a little bit. So hanging out with Vallen: perfectly fine, he's a gentleman dwarf who will cultivate their minds. Spending time with Kellid barbarians: all right, but if you hurt her baby she will destroy you.
And this 2PC thing sounds and looks splendid, that should be fun. It certainly provides an opportunity to switch things up roleplaying-wise!
P.S. Istiel, Zoriya is fine with people not liking her children much as long as they just ignore them. Children are definitely an acquired taste. (...sorry, witch joke.)
Tomag |

Completely okay with this. Tomag can be a bit impulsive, but he tries not to be. :)
DM Nerk |
@ Vallen: I imagined them coming from the east, because that's where everyone came from, but the west could be interesting as well.
Tomag and Zoriya: what do you think? Have you been lost in the east or the west? Depending where you came from, you'll have had different experiences. Nothing super-dramatic, because it's all off-camera, but one or two interesting discoveries.
As neither of you can find your way out of a paper bag, we'll say a couple of competent sailors (including one who can navigate enough to get to Lillend Bay) as well as a couple of miscellaneous NPCs made it with you.
As far as the secondary PCs go, I gave everyone a second character from the pool of NPCs that existed, to prevent situations like the one where people were twiddling their thumbs in RL for a week while two people solved the Skin Stealer Mystery. I've extracted blood oaths from everyone to keep it to two active groups.
Zoriya, with your kids, you might not want to be tramping through the woods exploring a lot, so you'd probably get someone who would be better suited to that role. Tomag, I imagine you'll be more traditional adventurer, so your 2PC would be more a homebody type. Either way, I'm going to let you settle in for a bit before we do that.
Tomag |
I'm okay with either east or west. Since we had the kids, I think it might be more plausible to say we came from the east, though.
I'm also okay with grabbing a homebody for my second PC. While Tomag is certainly going to want to help around the town, he will definitely be up for leaving town in order to assist the others in whatever they might be doing.
Also, can you link the respective threads so I don't end up lost and alone in the PbP forums (again)? I am apparently no good at finding stuff anymore. >_<
Zoriya Yelizaveta |
The east it is!
Zoriya will likely be flexible on the adventuring front, once she has childcare taken care of, but she also has all these political ambitions, so a more tactically oriented character makes sense. Hopefully someone nicer than she is.
Sounds good! I have work this weekend anyway--enjoy your girlfriend time, it's the best. :)
Cueta Guiding Star |
Lots of great ideas here. I'm excited to see Tomag and Zoriya in action.
Regarding the PC2s, right now my PC2 has been a homebody, but that is because her narrative arc for the moment has to happen close to home (and she's a level 1 expert with little in the way of things to contribute in terms of fighting and exploration).
But, as time goes on, I expect Sorala to be out in the world a lot more, and Cueta to spend more time at home. I think Cueta actually has some good reasons to stay at home for awhile, but pressing needs have so far prevented this.
So I guess I'm trying to say, I think you can tailor your characters' ambitions and reasons for being in and out of Newspring as fits your mood and situation, and shouldn't worry about your PC1 or PC2 always being at Newspring or on the road.
Unless you are Hassan. That poor guy has a pretty thankless day job.
Cueta Guiding Star |
One more thing - we have a rulership council that is supposed to vote on matters of import regarding Newspring. The council currently consists of:
Vallen (chairdwarf)
Jarla Silverclasp(NPC)
Kal'Tos
Gair
Sorala (PC2)
Edmund Thayer (NPC)
Sandra Thayer (NPC)
Ben Sandlock [dead former PC]
So, we have one immediate opening, and probably need an odd number (so another opening) to break ties. We've relegated a council seat to one PC or PC2 per player, so this could be something both Tomag and Zoriya (or your PC2s) could start working towards, once they get established. As Zoriya has political ambitions, this seems like a good spot for her, and OOC, as players, of course we want you both to have a say in decisions.
So, we'll probably need to be thinking, as players, in terms of ways to get you both some representation on the council.
Gair Hearthseeker |
All very true Ceuta!
Though you forgot about Manari(NPC) being on the council. She is the leader of our small elven contingent and really the only mage we have, at least until Zoriya arrives.
Either way, I think the numbers should work out just fine as we have discussed offering Ben's spot to another of the halflings to keep them represented. Once we accommodate our two new PC's we should have a total of 11 council members which should work just fine.

Oh that is correct - how could I forget Manari? She's a pretty important NPC, and the representative of the Harpy's people as well as the dwindling elven contingent.
Speaking of representation, that could be a way to get at least one new PC on the council. If there are enough of them to constitute a faction (whatever that may be) in Sorala's mind, she'd want them to be represented.
Cueta Guiding Star |
Also, DM Nerk, are the new PCs going have any capital?
DM Nerk |
I'm thinking about that, Cueta. Everyone else started with 100 gp worth of capital to put into play immediately for downtime projects.
Downtme rules here, if you're unfamiliar. The new arrivals should assume the same. As Ben pointed out, you can't do much of anything with 100gp worth of capital, but you can combine it and use it to get some things started.
A rough timeline for Tomag and Zoriya
40 days ago: Your ship, the Lady of the Waves, is separated from the rest of the fleet by terrible storms.
37 days ago: after being blown by terrible storms for three days, the skies finally clear and the captain reports that you are near the place where the fleet was bound. The ship is in terrible shape.
35 days ago: LAND HO! The ship is beached on a small islet for essential repairs. There is no fresh water and little food on the island, but the ship's stores are sufficient.
26 days ago: The Lady of the Waves sets sail for Absalom. A dozen would-be colonists and two sailors (including the second mate, Rina Sarap, a
sharp-tongued Vudran woman who may or may not be wanted by the authorities in Absalom) remain with supplies enough for two weeks and a ship's boat, intending to press on in search of the bay where the fleet was originally bound.
23 days ago: Another three days under sail brings this group to the continent, and by following the coast, they should reach...
22 days ago: Another storm hits. This one should be familiar to the current players, as the one that sank the Harpy. The group lands in a sheltered cove to wait out the storm.
21 days ago: The sun comes up, the day is clear, but the mouth of the cove is blocked by a longship. Roughly 100 tattooed dwarves are aboard, and furiously demand something in a language nobody can understand. Just before things start to get ugly, several outrigger canoes full of humanoids with shark-like mouths appear, attacking the dwarves and in the ensuing battle, the longship is badly damaged.
The shark-teeth are driven off, and the remaining dwarves take the refugees prisoner.
20 days ago: The dwarves start their day off by sacrificing one of the prisoners. Then, they set to work repairing their ship.
19 days ago: The dwarves start their day off by sacrificing one of the prisoners. Then, they set to work repairing their ship.
etc
14 days ago: The dwarves start their day off by sacrificing one of the prisoners. Then, they set to work repairing their ship. Tomag, Zoriya and Rina engineer an escape with the 5 other remaining survivors, grabbing their boat and sailing off in the night.
Nearly two weeks of working their way up the coast, dodging the pursuing dwarves follow, before one night, they wake up to a small flock of pseudodragons making a lot of noise and generally wanting to be followed. (Zoriya, speaking draconic, is finally able to make some sense of what they are saying)
Yesterday: The pseudo dragons lead them into the small mouth of a large bay.
Today: they will arrive at the settlement of Newspring.
Vallen Silverclasp |
On the subject of capital- I'm not going to tell you what to buy, but if you spend your 100gp on 5 labor a piece it would be a huge boon to our gardening project. We could start building two more gardens immediately.

This is HUGE. This confirms the demon-worshiping dwarves are still very much active, and are to the west. They also seem to like their ships. Of course we don't know it yet, and we'll have to discuss the implications when the time comes.
Zoriya and Tomag, you may have seen this in the campaign- We discovered one of the sea-dwarves' island fortresses and cleared it of kuru. Vallen discovered that those dwarves have forsaken Torag and have turned to worshipping demons. We are considering the Portress as I call it for another town in the future.

I'm glad someone was finally able to understand the pseudodragons. Our elves had a really rough time trying to communicate with them.

I'm afraid this means we may have to clear Portress of demon-worshipping dwarves now...

As far as using the labor to build a garden, Tomag is definitely going to want to do that, and be directly involved in its care and maintenance. Cooking is something he really enjoys, after all, and he wants to be involved in every step of feeding people.

Damn straight! Can't be too much worse than cannibals!
So many questions raised by this.
Are the dwarves from another settlement coming to clear Portress of the Kuru? Or are they the original inhabitants of the Portress driven from their homes? Hopefully the second, if they are from another settlement, it's a good bet that the Portress is in their hands now, casualty free no less :(
Either way, they sound well equipped and easily capable of traveling the coast to Newspring itself. That makes them a huge threat to us...

Oh my God.
This is amazing, I am so pumped! Demon worshipping dwarves, human sacrifice, longships, pseudodragons...this has it all, really. I'm glad Zoriya's crazy Intelligence came in handy already! Speaking of, she has quite a bit of Knowledge (Arcane) and Knowledge (Planes), would she have picked up any details on what the dwarves were specifically worshiping and hoping to accomplish?
Capital-wise, she's willing to contribute to a garden if it's the most necessary thing, and since she surely considers herself the de facto land-born leader of the group (sea leadership best left to Rina) she'll angle hard for a place on the council, citing her knowledge of those demon worshiping dwarves who deserve nothing but pain.
Seriously, this is fantastic. Zoriya is going to be so motivated to go out and burn those people to the ground. For example--
And probably chasing after their escaped daemon food.
Zoriya really, really wants them to try, just so she can rip their faces off whole.
Tomag, I think this is also great for cementing their bonding. The fact that he was instrumental in saving her children's lives means that she's basically committed to his best interests now. Also, nothing like shared captivity to bring people together, am I right?
This will definitely affect how Zoriya enters Newspring as well, i.e. with warpaint and crazy eyes.
Ugh, Nerk, this is so cool! A thousand times yes to it all.
Tomag |
I think Tomag will be less about going full Sherman's Total War on those dwarves, and more about trying to redeem them. However, if they can't be reasoned with, he's going to have to reluctantly crack some skulls in the Dawnflower's name. :3
They try to touch the youngin's, however, and whether they can be redeemed or not, there's going to be a mighty displeased half-orc ready to make sure they won't be doing much but collecting their shattered teeth for the next couple months. If they're lucky.
Kal'Tos |
Personally I would prefer if we hunted down and purged the dwarf heretics with a company of dwarven soldiers and a dozen Paladins and inquisitors of Torag. But since we are on the frontier, I will settle for having to do the deed myself with support from a half dozen friends I have made over the last month.

They worship demons and have forsaken the ways of a true dwarf. While they might be redeemed from the second; the first is solved only by their deasth.
I am completely in favour of trying to save any native dwarf children too young to realize what their anscestor have done, the rest have chosen their fate.

Tomag believes that everyone who is willing can be reformed. Sadly, the language barrier is likely to make it so that Tomag is going to have to be rather reluctantly bashing a lot of heads until he can solve that problem. Kind of hard to redeem people when they have no damn clue what you're saying.
