Game Master Jaster Kite

What if Pathfinder was the world's most dangerous video game? A self-aware sandbox game.

Here we go again :)

Mimesyn; Great idea, a young character would fit in great with this setting, and I like the story behind the character, too. I wanna see this one develop, and I agree that a 'puppet-master' class is a good choice for such a character.

Xynen; I do love me a Grippli. And large sword+Gripple=awesome. I meant both, but since the character is fairly new, and the game consists of real people in a dangerous, unexpected circumstance, most (but not all) of which trying to escape, irl motivation is key, since most people (but again, not all) are too worried to get 'in-character. Your charecter(s) seem like exactly the type to be the Role-Player.

Therasiph; Evil GM? Me? Noooo :)

Philo Pharynx; I like the character concept. A noobish character would be a great foil for Xynen. Yeah, it is just an out-of-the-blue thing. There's no Pathfinder in this Alternate Earth (though there is 3.5). Also, there is an in-game manual screen accessible to all characters at any time for learning the system. Perhaps she played another online game with her boyfriend for the same reason. You've released a weapon of Mass Destruction on your campaign, too?

Hmmmmmm, I have an entertaining concept for this one. Not sure about the class just yet. I'll dig into that in due time. For now, dotting.

Getting the concept all figured out, but so far I have:

Background:
Janice Cavos was 12 when she died for three minutes before being brought back to life by medical personnel. She believed that it was the personification of Death that brought her back. Ever since then she devoted her life to learning everything she could about the 'being' Death. Every book, movie, even video game (including tabletop RPGs) she could get her hands on that contained a personification of Death he devoured. Eventually she came to believe that she was to he the 'bride' of Death once she gained enough life experience. Shortly after she reached this epiphany, she woke up one day to words written in the air: Choose Your Race.

Gonna go either human or half-elf, and I'm choosing the Reaper Mage Pale Road for my Death Mage class.

Very interested

Alright, here's a first look at my submission from the RP end of things; I've got a background section that focuses on the character before the game, and then a look at his character creation process, because I wanted to write that out. As it says in the writing, I'll be going with the Warder class and a couple of archetypes for it. Hopefully I'll get mechanics finished in the next day or two.

Background:
Jasper Wolf was 22, working on his M.F.A., when it happened. But unlike so many others who woke up in a strange place with the words "Choose Race" in front of them, he was fairly prepared.

Since he was young, Jasper had always loved stories--reading them, illustrating them in his mind or on paper, and especially creating his own. Seeing a world come to life, getting to interact with all the little moving cogs and pieces, watching as a character moved through it and learned and grew and changed... it was almost magical to him. So from a young age, he got his hands on computer RPGs, starting with that old man himself, Zork. Countless hours were whittled away with Jasper peering wide-eyed into the glowing screen, cautiously discovering more and more of the game.

By the time he was ten, Jasper had discovered tabletop gaming and was hooked. He devoured every system he could get his hands on, learning more and more about the rules while also striving to flesh out his characters. Among his group Jasper was known as the one with the most developed RP skills as well as the finest system mastery of anything he'd accessed for more than a week or two, and even at the local gaming store, he was accepted by the older, more "hardcore" players. A tad immature at times, perhaps, but he was still a handy asset at the table, and sure to raise a laugh and a good time.

Around this time, though, Jasper had begun having bad nightmares. His parents blamed visions of monstrosities and horror on all the books he was reading, and who could blame them? But Jasper didn't care; he wasn't about to give up his favorite pastime because of his own mind. Instead, he started looking into the idea of lucid dreaming, began practicing. It took a while, but he got the hang of it, and by the time he'd graduated high school Jasper could dream with full consciousness.

He'd also begun a career online, working his way through some of the hit MMOs. With his drive to fully understand mechanics, he became a terror on the battlefields, always operating under the username handle of "Mister Jingles." He formed clans, led them into battle, and rose to victory--always while roleplaying to his fullest, never breaking character. Many of the people who played with him found it to be an amusing and fitting quirk; many more found it downright annoying. Still, he was a Name on the boards, recognized, and that was what mattered to him: he was making an impact.

So when he woke up "in his apartment" to see a screen hanging in front of him, he quickly decided it was a dream and dove right in...

Character Creation:
Jasper blinks a few times, coming to groggily. It's too dark for it to be time to wake up. He doesn't throw his blinds open, but they aren't fully closed. Some light should be leaking in... Then his eyes focus and he reads the words.

Please select race and class.

Oh. He blinks a few times, and realizes he's standing already. Dreaming. Right. He clicks on the list and looks at the multitude of options that pop up. Jesus, has it gotten to me this bad? What are these things? He mouths the names as he passes them by. Strix? Androids? Who comes up with this stuff? On a whim, he reaches out and touches one, and it spreads out into a full description of the race, complete with location, society, and mechanical effects.

A grin spreads across his face. New system. Looks like it's based on 3.5, mostly. Weird for an online to be so similar, but whatever. Time to learn.

Time slips by as it does in dreams--how long Jasper spends poring over the mechanics, as much as he can find, he isn't sure. But by the end, he's fairly certain of how the game works, for the most part. Been a while since I've even looked at a turn-based MMO, let alone played one. Maybe wishful thinking? He shrugs and backs out to the start screen, deleting his options to begin again.

Please select race and class.

After some hesitation, Jasper chooses Human. Hate to be so common, a lot of these races seem really neat. But probably best to stick with what I know, and looks like they're good at anything.

For class, Jasper scrolls back through the list some more, trying to decide what to do. Spellcasters are usually more powerful, but something with a bit of a mix would be neat... Looks like a Tome of Battle update here. Sounds neat, we'll give it a try. Shooting for survivability combined with combat skill, he chooses the Warder.

Select Archetype.

Having already looked at the idea of archetypes, what they meant and how they were used, Jasper decides to take the Zweihander Sentinel and Sworn Protector archetypes. Get a little more offensive power with a big sword--looks like they actually paid some attention to historical fighting techniques, too--and then some defensive and teamwork stuff. And they stack, right? He grins as both options highlight before he hits Continue. Awesome.

The process continues. Jasper allocates his ability scores, skills, chooses feats, and explores more and more of the system. Once he's finished with that, he gets introduced to a little of the lore, choosing background elements and traits, the ethnicity of human and his character's appearance, and finally, a name. Here he thinks hard for a while. Do I go with Jingles? Is this a username, or my character? Do I introduce myself, or does it automatically show up?

After staring at the input screen for a long time, he decides to see how long he can set the name--with his character's actual name being a reference to old books he loves. Taran Wanderborn--MisterJingles. He looks for a disclaimer that this is a username, then remembers he's dreaming here. Right. It'll work however I want it. Whatever. Shaking his head, he hits Begin Game and waits to begin, or wake up...

Question as I build this: what kind of adjustments do you want me to make for a child character? Or will there be any at all as this is a video game style thing? I would like her 'in game' character to be child sized if that's an option.

Applying the small size changes is what was used on Paizo's new child iconic (the kineticist).

Potential Child Stat Changes:

Small Size Adjustments:
+1 size bonus to their AC, a +1 size bonus on attack rolls, a –1 penalty on combat maneuver checks and to their CMD, and a +4 size bonus on Stealth checks. Small races have a space of 5 feet by 5 feet and a reach of 5 feet.

Young Character Adjustments:
+2 bonus to Dexterity and a –2 penalty to Strength, Constitution, and Wisdom. A young character's potential inexperience and awkwardness are represented by having only the skill ranks of a 1st-level character rather than taking a penalty to Intelligence or Charisma.

Jaster, I PMed you a couple of ideas I had. I hope you like!

I'm thinking an elan (or something like that) Vitalist.

The player wants to be an optimized healer, so he went an made an optimized healer.

He has experience with traditional healers in MMOs, and wants to be a good one, so he can get into the best dungeon parties.

I'm thinking a kobold ninja. Because... KOBOLDS! And... NINJAS!

As for the character, I think this will be someone who is remarkably comfortable with being in this new world. A guy who, in spite of the danger, prefers it over his old life, which is mostly cartoons, anime, comics, games, etc. He doesn't want to go home. Why should he? At home, he's a nobody, but here, he's a freakin' ninja dragon (almost).

I've worked at Wal-Mart before, anything with the ability to rage is perfect for it.

Here is the submission for Johnnycat. Everything should be in order short of Background, which will come along some time withing the next couple of days.

As always, any feedback/criticism/commentary is welcome and appreciated.

Here's a suggestion for you, Jaster:

It could be interesting to use the Background Skills system... with the notion that the background skills come not from what the character knows, but what the player knows. It would be neat for the player's life to have some impact on their virtual self.

Edit: My character's background is up.

Background:
Florentine Martel, age 87, bid goodbye to her son, daughter-in-law, and grandchildren. How nice it had been of them to come visit. With the help of one of the assisted-living home’s nurses, she laid down on her bed. Seven-thirty in the evening, more than time for her to get some sleep. In the corner of the room, in its towel-covered cage, her pet thrush Mr. Whistle chirped softly as it prepared to sleep.

Mrs. Martel was tired in more ways than one.

She had lived a very full life. Her life had been one she could only have dreamed of as a child. She’d been a successful career woman, having been promoted from a simple part-time secretary to assistant-vice-president of a national public-service company. She’d also been a mother; three children and four grand-children between them.

Now, however, she was ready to move on. She was in decent health, but aches had accumulated over the years. She was ready to rest.

When she woke up, in the middle of the night, she was met with a most unusual display :

Please select Race and Class

Only somewhat awake, and completely unfamiliar with the words, she stuttered her answer : ”Er… Caucasian, retired middle-class?”

Answer not recognized. Please select Race and Class

Mrs. Martel struggled into a sitting position. She reached for the nurse-call button, but failed to find it. More words appeared on the screen.

Do you require assistance?

”Who is this? What’s going on?”

The prompt remained unmoving on the screen. Mrs. Martel hesitated for a moment, then spoke up again.

”Yes, I would like assistance.”

Just for a moment, Mrs. Martel thought she heard Mr. Whistle give a gentle coo. The prompt displayed new text:

Activating: Fully Automated Mathematical Intelligence for Ludo-Integration and Astute Recommendation…

F.A.M.I.L.I.A.R activated.

Please stand by while F.A.M.I.L.I.A.R prepares a personalized profile.

Line after line of text flowed by at speeds far beyond what her tired old eyes could follow, and before she had a chance to snap out of her confusion, everything went white.

~~~
Florentine woke up in a room much different to her hospital room; it reminded her of her father’s old country home. For the first time in ten years, she managed to stand out of bed without help. For the first time in twenty years, she felt fully rested. For the first time in thirty, she couldn’t feel a single ache.
Only one explanation seemed obvious to her. As Mr. Whistle landed on the windowsill in front of her and gave a friendly trill, Florentine gave a heartfelt laugh.
She’d feared death for so long, but finding herself in such a beautiful place, on a bright sunny morning, she had to admit: The afterlife looked quite promising.
Strange words appeared in mid-air.
Welcome to Golarion.
Mr. Whistle hopped off of the windowsill, and onto one of the bed’s post.
”Good morning, Mistress. You must have many questions. As your familliar, please allow me to answer them.”
Profile in development here.
Sorry for the double post, edit time expired.
Character motivation and gaming experience are up.
Can someone point me to a source that has items by caster level? I'm having trouble finding CL1 items.
Hey, GM, what would you say to the Psychic Duelist archetype? I understand that the rules for psychic duels are complicated, and you might not want to learn them, so I'm checking before I do anything with it.
Google-fu
You could get potions or scrolls too, obviously.
I bow to your google fu. Thanks a lot!
Kite, do you mind if a player holds off on the minutiae of equipment (outside of weapons, armor, and the magic item) until after selection has been made?
Another great question would be where are we starting in game, I would like to incorporate getting there in the backstory
Loading..Joseph Waskelis into Golarion Online.
You could say, I really put myself into role-playing.
Mimesyn; I think applying the small size should be enough. The young template would just underpower you.
Roycilo; Got the PM, I enjoyed the concepts.
Turt Snacko; Snacko! You made it. And with your original Bloodrager idea, too. And his character creation. Perfect. Where we're starting is what I'm pretty excited about. Hope you know your Inner-Sea guide, because you'll need it. It's called the Birdcage, it is the starting city-area for all new characters. Also, you know in MMOs depending on character choices, you start out in different areas of the game. Here is where you make that choice. Once assembled, the team will vote on what nation to start in (truly a sandbox, eh?) and leave the birdcage to begin their journey. I've got plans for most nations already, so I'm good for this idea.
Cydrius; I've actually considered background skills for that same reason, but the thought slipped my mind as I was actually typing it. By all means. I hope everybody else reads this message. Also, your character is even better than I imagined after reading it a bit. Also, no, don't mind at all.
Newbonomicon; Do you have a link to the recquisite pages?
Also, just want to say I'm really impressed. I mean, look at all these ideas towards RPing here. You're all really taking this seriously. Thanks.
Considering your latest post, Jaster Kite, I need to think of a good use of the crafting skill to use my Background skill points.
Hmm, background skills, what to take? My first thought was lore, maybe something like "Lore-MMO Mechanics"? Since it's based on 'real world' experience. Is that cool with you GM?
Oops. Erratum to my previous post that I forgot to mention: Florentine's familiar is a thrush with the Valet familiar archetype.
Hello All,
This is Sach's submission x_Nicodemus_x The Drifter Owl. Crunch and Backstory are pretty much set. I just have some extra gold and things to clean up.
Very excited about this game
For the purposes of our gifted object, does a Page of Spell Knowledge with a first level spell count as a CL 1 item?
Here is the submission from Demon Lurking. I still need to finish typing up the background. Short version is that Janice is a reference librarian who's boyfriend back in college used to drag her to his tabletop gaming sessions. She remembers reading through the books when she got bored (her bf and friends weren't very good roll players). She doesn't have much imagination, but she's read a lot. She quickly found the help page and figured out how to make a better version of herself (all Mary Sue).
Newbonomicon wrote:
Page of Spell Knowledge has a CL of 17, just like Pearls of Power, regardless of the spell level.
Yeah, Mimesyne is right on that front.
I was just checking, in case you were willing to make an exception.
EDIT: Wait, hold on! I found a relevant FAQ.
So I think I have my character done-ish. I've gone with a Wildblooded Sorcerer with a Sylvan bloodline and a Wolf animal companion.
I'm totally going for a very fairy tale theme. Elsie wears a red cloak and has named her Wolf companion 'Big Bad'. I figure her somatic component for spellcasting might be reciting snippets from Brothers Grimm or Mother Goose stories (which I fully intend to include while posting).
I have her carrying a Book of Fairy Tales and used the pricing and weights of a Common Artisan Tool. I figured if there's musical instrument tools to aid with Perform skills, maybe a book could be a tool for Perform(oratory). Maybe even get a masterwork one later for a bonus eh, eh? :D
I think the only thing I have left to do for the character’s crunch is to finish picking traits. There’s so many of them and I’m trying to stay pretty thematic and of course adhere to her background.
I had originally wanted to run her as a dhampir, but I thought that unless we got a cleric or oracle necromancer running around, it wouldn’t work well for healing. Feel free to correct me if you plan on littering the campaign with potions of inflict (blank) wounds ;D I’d love to pick up that undead companion feat available to dhampirs at level 10 lol.
Apologies for the length of... well, all of this. >.> Sometimes I get carried away. It can all be found on my profile as well. I've got so many aliases atm that I wanted to avoid making yet another until necessary!
Elsie's Background:
Elsie grew up in a cookie-cutter house in a well to do suburban neighborhood with a loving mother and father who both worked hard to ensure Elsie had a comfortable life. She had a few close friends and an array of acquaintances. She out grew playdates a few years ago, but that didn’t stop her dad from dragging her over to his colleagues’ houses to meet their kids so he could look good. He meant well and they usually went for ice cream after so she couldn’t complain too much. Her mother was more of the stay at home type, though she did do a lot of volunteer work. Even still, she found the time to make all the meals, clean the house, and see Elsie safely to school every morning.
But despite the appearance the Millers worked so hard to uphold, not all was fine and dandy. Mr and Mrs Miller had fallen out of love quite some time ago (shortly after the birth of Elsie, truth be told) and tensions always ran high until they erupted into a fury of screams. Sure, they tried to hide it from Elsie, but their efforts fell short. Nothing quite like laying alone in bed in the dark listening to your parents yelling profanities at each other! Blocking it all out was a required skill Elsie developed over time, made easier by the tablet she had gotten last Christmas. She had wanted a puppy, but after hearing her parents fight over whether or not that was a good idea, she retracted the idea.
So there she was, sitting up in her room while her parents went at it again, drowning out the sound with cranked up music, funny pictures of cats, and Facebook...
Into the Game:
She must have dozed off. What’s this...? Oh, this is a weird dream. She must have fallen asleep playing one of her RPG apps. Not the first time she’s dreamed she was playing video games. Usually it was Mario, though. Wizard? No, that’s for boys... Oh, Sorcerers can be girls... She flipped through the options a few more times before settling on a human sorcerer. What the heck is a archie-taip? Oh, this one gets a pet! I’ll name him Big Bad, like the Wolf in the stories... Skill points? Uh... I guess I want to be pretty, so I’ll do that one... She hummed and hawed over the numbers a little longer before deciding she was sufficiently pretty according to the stats. A name? Why, I’m Elsie, Princess of the Fairy Tale Land! ...Oh, too many characters. Just Elsie then, I guess.
She woke up again to a bright white light. ”No, momma, just five more minutes okay?” she grumbled. Bleary eyes strained to focus. ”...Momma?” This wasn’t her bed. She pushed herself up to sitting and rubbed at her eyes. ”M-momma?” This wasn’t even her house. She had heard on the news that people were going missing. ”MOMMA?!” she yelled even louder. Words flashed in front of her eyes along with various bars and numbers. What’s Gola-ree-on?
Reporting in with my finalized submission. Background is complete and, again, I welcome any feedback or the like. I'll repost it here for the sake of convenience:
Background:
James Findlay (user name "tin_man") is an ex-army engineer and combat veteran formerly of the 571st Sapper Company.
Born in southern New Mexico, Findlay scored high marks all the way through primary school and on into technical school, specializing in material engineering. Looking to help cover the costs while enrolled he enlisted with the army reserves, later opting for full enlisted status after graduation. Around that same time he met a nice girl, settled down, and had a couple of kids.
It wasn't until a few years later that he received active duty orders sending him overseas. His unit was a deployment of the 864th Engineer Battalion that specialized in EOD and demolitions operations, sent primarily to aid route clearance during Operation Dragon Strike's summer offensive. Eight months into his tour he was wounded in combat, the extent of which qualified him for a trip back to the states and later a full medical discharge.
Returning to normal life was difficult, to say the least. Between his disability pay and a civil service position they were well-off, financially speaking. Rather, Findlay's problems tended to crop up in his home life. He had become distant, having difficulty getting along with others (including his own family). During the day he drifted off, sometimes for hours at a time, and at night he was confused and prone to outbursts. Despite this, it was only when things became a serious concern that he sought professional help.
James Findlay was diagnosed with Post-Traumatic Stress and Depersonalization Disorders as a result of his experiences in the army. With proper treatment and medication he was able to regulate, though not completely control, his symptoms. His therapist also recommend that he commit to a hobby; something to help him focus his attention. Having been exposed to tabletop games in the army as a cheap and simple means of entertainment for active duty soldiers, he chose to turn to them here as an outlet. Conveniently, they also helped him reestablish connections with his wife and children with the game as a medium.
One night in the fall of the following year, Findlay awoke abruptly from a dead sleep. He felt groggy, as if he had been off his medication for some time, so he didn't immediately question the glowing computer screen before him. Eventually he brought himself to reading the words there; some kind of character creator by the looks of it. His first instinct was that he was having an episode - in the past his therapist had had him write down traits about himself whenever he started losing his grip, so maybe that's what this was. Just an exercise. Carefully he started sifting through options, trying to rebuild himself using the material presented. Minutes, maybe hours, passed like this, all the while Findlay's sense of sickness was growing. Halfway through translating his military experience into "feats" he blacked out, and then a second time about 10 minutes after that. Each time, he awoke to the same screen right where he had left off. In the end, after silently pleading with himself to "wake up" he was left with finishing the character as his only option.
Hands shaking, head pounding, and drenched in sweat, only one box remains. His memory once again calls back to his days in the army. The bullet sponges that ran with his platoon had taken to calling them "Tin Men" on account of the heavy EOD suits they had to wear while clearing roads. For whatever reason the name stuck with him.
Slowly he manages to fill the final box.
The words "tin_man" hang on the screen before everything disappears in a brilliant flash of light and James Findlay blacks out for a third and final time.
I look forward to providing a strong counterpoint to the more complaint characters that have been submitted.
I'll be good mostly for utility and crafting. If ya'll want something made just say the word and I'll get it to ya.
Another question about the world, are there NPCs at all?
Ooooh, cool idea! The NPCs could be test subjects that lost their minds to the game!
A note on my plans for Jasper/Taran/Mister Jingles, mainly brought on by tin_man's mention of compliant characters (not that I think you were attacking us/me/anyone, just made me think of it):
Jasper may seem fairly compliant at the moment, happy to make a character and get into his element. That'll last approximately to the point at which he realizes he isn't just dreaming as he currently supposes. This could happen as early as when he first experiences real pain from an attack, but I imagine it'll occur when he goes to sleep in the game world--expecting this will prompt him to wake up in real life--and instead wakes up the next day with no conscious return to the world he knows.
Cue freakout session.
My freak out will occur when Gabriel realizes his darling sister is home alone.
Sign me up, I'll get some of that sweet gear.
Nicodemus is going to hit some people pretty hard with light party support and debuffs - but those don't come online for a little while.
Well, my character is going to believe that this is a test from her beloved Death, so she's gonna roll with it for now.
My character believes she's dead and has gone to a strange but pleasant afterlife.
Finally got my character's crunch done. Presenting the crunch for Janice Cavos, a.k.a. Mrs.Thanatos. Decided to go Drow instead of human or half-elf. If you'd prefer something else, let me know, but since you're allowing 3pp, I figured a Drow wouldn't be too bad.
While I don't have an alias up for this guy yet as I'm still struggling to figure out exactly what class I want to be (paladin? antipaladin? kineticist? too many choices!), here's what I have so far.
Joshua Martens is a fairly typical early 30-something college graduate who got a job working in a large technology firm. What he had expected to be a great job innovating and contributing to the future shaping the world, turned out to be the exact opposite. Boring, mundane, abysmally tiresome data entry for hours upon end straight up to the brink of madness. He now understands how and why people could be driven to bringing an assault rifle into the office to put everyone out of their misery. Not that he has plans to do any such thing, but he can certainly understand the logic. He spends his free time out at bars with friends and the occasional coworker, at the gym (rarely), and playing sports video games. Though he had certainly heard of Dungeons and Dragons, he has absolutely zero experience with tabletop games.
The Games Begin!:
Waking up in a pitch dark room with a hangover the size of Texas is typically a blessing, but the stark lack of a glass of water is unhelpful. Bleary eyes blink away sleep and peer about into the darkness when the words Choose a Class appear in blindingly bold letters. Joshua winces away from the light and squeezes his eyes tightly closed until his headache reaches a manageable level again. Or at least, a level that does not feel like it is going to crack his skull open and wander away.
A class, he manages to dredge up through the haze of alcohol-fueled dehydration. What am I, in college again? Grumpy musings aside, he cycles through his options without considering exactly how he is doing so and makes some quick choices. Anything to get the blasted light out of his face.
Imagine his surprise when the entire world turns into the surface of the sun upon finishing with the prompts. At least when he wakes up in a completely different world, his headache is not nearly as bad as it had been?
I'm sorry, someone had to.
